Gotcha! Chris Matthews Pictured Marching For Hillary In July 4 Parade

By Tim Graham, Jul. 4, 2015, Newsbusters

Jamie Dupree sent this fascinating tweet on Saturday, a picture of MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews marching in a suburban DC parade next to a Hillary Clinton for President banner.

Those MSNBC folks have a natural talent for appearing to be all wrapped up in partisan Democratic politics. Could this just be Chris talking to a suburban friend? Even if so, he doesn't seem troubled by the possibility of a photo like this.

Filmmaker Who Interviewed Abortionist Kermit Gosnell: “I Was Sitting The Presence of Evil

By Tim Graham, May 25, 2015, Life News

Dana Loesch at TheBlaze TV interviewed Irish filmmaker Ann McElhinney, who’s working on a movie and a book about abortionist Kermit Gosnell, now in prison for killing seven babies after birth and allowing an overmedicated woman to die in his dirty Philadelphia clinic. The national media largely blacked out his trial in 2013.

She met Dr. Gosnell in person.

“He has an answer for everything. He lives in his own little world. Every word that comes out of his mouth is a lie. He lies so easily,” she said.

WashPost Plays Dumb, Finds 'It's Surprisingly Hard to Say' If Letterman's Liberal

By Tim Graham, May 23, 2015, Newsbusters

Washington Post political correspondent Chris Cillizza spent way too much time claiming the personal political views of David Letterman were some kind of mystery. The headline was "Is David Letterman liberal? It's surprisingly hard to say." No. It's not.

Cillizza does this despite mentioning the Geoffrey Dickens Top Ten list of liberal outbursts posted at NewsBusters. Cillizza does this despite noting he donated more than $12,000 to electing Democrat Al Franken to the U.S. Senate.

What has barely been touched amid all of these words is Letterman's politics. He commanded a huge audience for much of his 33 years in late night and virtually every politician who ever considered running for or served in national office sat on his couch. And yet, despite that perch, people are generally hard pressed to give any sort of assessment of Letterman's personal politics.

"He was pretty tough on [Hillary Rodham Clinton] in 1999/2000 until she appeared on the show," recalled Howard Wolfson, who was a longtime Clinton confidant. "I always found him very substantive in his political interviews. I didn't really detect an ideology."

Latino Columnist 'Nauseated' By 'Racist' Halperin Queries Testing Cuban Heritage of Ted Cruz

By Tim Graham, May 10, 2015, Newsbusters

Bloomberg TV host Mark Halperin drew a serious rhetorical beating from Washington Post-syndicated columnist Ruben Navarrette over his prove-you’re-a-Cuban line of questioning to Ted Cruz on his program With All Due Respect. (The “respect” seemed to be missing, or as phony-sounding as it can be during an argument.) The interview came on April 30, but the columnist just picked up the argument. Would a liberal Latino get this line of questioning? And notice that Halperin has a grim visage during these questions, like it’s an interrogation, not a friendly chat. (Nice edits via Digitas Daily):

Wild West Woes: WashPost Whines for Wyoming Woman Who Drove 400 Miles for an Abortion

By Tim Graham, May 8, 2015, Newsbusters

To liberal media outlets, the saddest thing about abortion is how women seeking to terminate their baby may have to drive more than 20 minutes to a clinic. The Washington Post on Thursday offered a 2,390-word opus on a woman named Emily [last name sympathetically withheld] who procured an abortion in Missoula, Montana, driving 407 miles from Wyoming.

The headline was “The long drive to end a pregnancy.” The story took up two entire inside pages with a page of scenic color pictures along the drive, but no people in them. Post writer Monica Hesse lectured in large letters on the front of the Style section about the “geography of abortion” being too taxing in red states:

This was a drive Emily had never taken for a procedure she hadn't imagined needing, in a time when fewer clinics and tougher laws were making the geography of abortion more complex. Because of the sensitivity of the abortion issue, The Washington Post agreed with Emily's request not to use her last name or identify where she lives.

WashPost Uncorks Long Gushy Story On 'Reverend' Al Sharpton's Self-Importance

By Tim Graham, Feb. 8, 2015, Newsbusters.org

Sunday’s Washington Post devoted a front-page article that extended an eye-opening three whole pages to Rev. Al Sharpton, the "carefully cultivated leader of the civil rights movement," and his “private doubts,” mostly about his own legacy, as he ponders the creation of a museum to promote his significance.

Post reporter Eli Saslow chronicled how a haunted Sharpton wonders if he’ll ever measure up to Martin Luther King. This is a little like Pee Wee Herman wondering if he’ll ever be Clint Eastwood.

Except Pee Wee Herman never caused racial riots or foisted racial hoaxes on America. The Post turned to Saslow, the same poet who lovingly described Obama and how "The sun glistened off his chiseled pectorals” on the beach. The beginning was evocative of someone convinced of his own greatness:

Al Sharpton had not made news for 13 hours, and this was cause for serious concern. He climbed into the back seat of his luxury SUV, told his driver to take him four blocks to Times Square and refreshed the news feed on his cellphone. “Seriously? Nothing on Ferguson?” he said. “Nothing about my statement on good policing?” His power depended in part on publicity; the civil rights movement depended in part on his power.

Tim Graham, Dec. 27, 2014, Newsbusters

Now Sam has told GQ he wishes he hadn't gone this noisy route, preferring a quieter coming out to teammates after he joined a team. But gay activists and gay-friendly journalists really wanted this way, and now mourn that Sam was cut (and not signed a third time) because of bigotry, not ability.

LA Times Now Describing Illegal Aliens As 'Informal Workers' Who 'Labor Unofficially'

By Tim Graham, Sept. 2, 2014, Newsbusters.org

Via Weasel Zippers, we learned the Los Angeles Times has a new term for illegal aliens in the work force: they’re “informal workers,” and that doesn’t mean they don’t arrive on the job in a tuxedo.

Times reporter Tiffany Hsu (a "UC Berkeley grad") began her Saturday story with the new I-word (and illegal immigrants also “labored unofficially” in "gray employment"):

Informal workers are growing part of California’s economy — a shift keenly felt in the construction industry, where 1 in 6 workers is either off the books or misreported, new research has found.

Construction businesses in the state employ roughly 895,000 workers, according to a report by downtown Los Angeles research group Economic Roundtable that was released Sunday. In 2011, 143,900 of those workers labored unofficially...

In specialty trades such as drywall and flooring, a quarter of laborers are considered informal, according to the Economic Roundtable.

Construction in California is a $152-billion industry, one in which so-called gray employment has surged 400% since 1972. The upswing has been especially pronounced since the most recent recession because only two-thirds of the formal construction jobs that disappeared have since returned...

The Economic Roundtable report recommends a wage floor that allows informal and formal workers to be paid the same amount and also suggests that legislators enact policies that reward on-the-level contractors.

The headline on the website was "1 in 6 California construction workers labors in shadows, study finds."

CNN's Zakaria Again Slammed With Examples of Plagiarism

By Tim Graham, Aug. 20, 2014, Newsbusters.org

In August of 2012, my friend Cam Edwards at NRANews.com handed me surprising evidence that CNN host (and then-Time and Washington Post columnist) Fareed Zakaria had committed plagiarism of a New Yorker article on gun control. This NewsBusters article led to suspensions, and an apology by Zakaria. Further reviews of his work led to self-defensive conclusions that this was an isolated mistake.

Now bloggers at Our Bad Media, who exposed plagiarism by Benny Johnson at BuzzFeed, have absolutely dismantled the idea that Zakaria doesn’t lazily cheat and cut corners. They said “we have to call [BS]”:

These examples raise far more serious questions about the integrity of Zakaria’s editors at CNN, TIME, and the Washington Post, all of whom claimed to have conducted similar reviews and found nothing. In the light of our findings, we have to call bullshit. It took less than an hour and a few Google searches for us at Our Bad Media to find an example of lifting in Zakaria’s columns written before the 2012 plagiarism scandal. So we’re left to wonder: did TIME, CNN, or the Washington Post actually conduct good faith reviews of Zakaria’s work? Have they since?

Dr. Ben Carson
By Tim Graham, Jul. 13, 2014, Newsbusters.org

The Sunday newspaper supplement Parade magazine interviewed "neurosurgeon turned conservative star" Ben Carson for the Sunday papers.

Bill Hewitt asked straightforward questions that asked Carson about a presidential campaign without judgment. He also asked about Ted Cruz, a Carson favorite, although that section was only online.

PARADE: I recently drove behind a car with a Carson ’16 bumper sticker. Surprised?

CARSON: Those are starting to show up. It’s pretty amazing. I certainly understand why they feel the way they do. I’m thinking that it’s not so much me they want as it is just some common sense and courage.

PARADE: Do you have any timetable for deciding about a presidential run?

CARSON: The way I look at it, I want to see how the country wants to move. We’ll find out a lot in November. If most people are satisfied with ever-increasing government, I would just back off. But if people indicate they would like more about personal responsibility, willingness to work hard, and sacrifice, I would stay involved at whatever level is necessary.

PARADE: You’re critical of political correctness. Is there anywhere you’d draw the line on acceptable speech?

CARSON: For the most part, I think you can speak up for what you believe without insulting people. The purveyors of political correctness want you to believe that anything you say that offends somebody else shouldn’t be said. You have people trying to fan the flames, very much like in grade school, you know, “Did you hear what he said about your mama?” They’re just trying to create strife.

PARADE: Your personal story—raised by a single mother with only a third grade education who got married at 13—is remarkable.

CARSON: My mother Sonya refused to be a victim. She refused to make excuses and [didn’t] accept them from us. She worked very hard to stay off of public assistance. I also had an understanding that I was the only person who could determine my aspirations and bring them to fruition through determination and faith. I also was not fond of poverty.

By Brent Bozell and Tim Graham, Jul. 12, Newsbusters.org

Dinesh D’Souza shocked the movie world in 2012 with his anti-Obama documentary "2016," which became the second highest-grossing documentary in U.S. movie history. On July 2, he unveiled his new documentary called "America: Imagine the World Without Her." It has already grossed $5 million in its first week.. One fictional competitor, the abortion-promoting comedy “Obvious Child,” barely grossed $2 million in its first month.

But there’s a more dramatic contrast. Film critics are supposed to judge art, but their liberal politics are smeared all over their reviews. Metacritic.com collects and analyzes movie reviews. “Obvious Child” drew a high Metacritic.com score of 75 (out of 100). For D’Souza’s “America,” it was a ridiculously low score of 14.

Then take the highest-grossing documentary in our history, Michael Moore’s 2004 hatchet job “Fahrenheit 911." Editor & Publisher magazine reported nine of ten newspaper movie critics recommended the film.

The Washington Post gushed over Moore’s prankumentary. "Its trajectory is guided with pinpoint accuracy," wrote Desson Thomson, and it "obviously skews facts to its own advantage, but that's what the game is all about. What counts is the emotional power of Moore's persuasion."

“Fahrenheit” was loaded with bizarre and unproven charges against Bush, most offensively suggesting the Bush family and Osama bin Laden’s family were in cahoots over 9-11. Moore concluded the film with a conspiracy theory: “In principle, the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects.” All of that was just fine.

But when it came to the new D’Souza film, the same newspaper’s Mark Jenkins suddenly found perceived fact-skewing and one-sidedness to be just awful. “‘America’ is less successful as a debate, since it isn’t one. D’Souza controls the conversation, and thus goes unchallenged when he tries to make real-world points with make-believe scenarios.”

Then there’s The New York Times. In 2004, Dana Stevens wrote that while the facts of “Fahrenheit 911" could be debated, ”it should first of all be appreciated as a high-spirited and unruly exercise in democratic self-expression.” As for D’Souza’s self-expression? The Times critics have yet to bother reviewing the movie.

The movie’s only questionable note is the egocentric turn at the end as D’Souza shows himself in handcuffs and notes his own prosecution for making $20,000 in straw donations in a U.S. Senate race in New York. D’Souza has a point about selective prosecution under Obama, but it loses its punch when the accuser has admitted his guilt.

Rep. Mike Rogers
By Bill Hoffman, May 16, 2014, Newsmax.com

Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan, who'll host a national radio show when his term ends, made a tactical error in blasting conservative talk giants Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, according to Tim Graham, director of media analysis for the Media Research Center.

"This is not the way you say howdy-do and welcome," Graham told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said in an interview with The New York Times that fans of Hannity and Limbaugh do not learn anything.

"I think there is room for a more productive, you-might-actually-learn-something kind of talk radio in the marketplace,'' Rogers told the newspaper.

"I’m a bit of a canary in a coal mine," he continued. "And I am hoping I don’t choke on fumes at the bottom of the shaft.''

Graham said Rogers' dismissal of his future competition is not the way to launch a radio career.

"You don't come in and say, everybody else here is a moron, and by the way, if you listen to them you're a moron," Graham said.

By Brent Bozell & Tim Graham, May 6, 2014

In March 2006, CBS News announced that President George W. Bush had stumbled into a “record low” approval rating of 34 percent. All the other networks jumped on the poll. CNN was reporting the number every hour on the hour. The survey confirmed their suspicions. The wheels on the Bush presidency had come off.

Last week, ABC and The Washington Post found Barack Obama is "facing the worst poll numbers of his presidency,” with an approval rating of 41 percent, and 52 percent disapproving. It's another administration on political life support. ABC offered its own survey a mere 18 seconds of attention from “Good Morning America” on April 29, and nothing on its own news that night. The others said nothing.

ABC morning anchor Amy Robach noted: "And President Obama is returning to Washington today, facing the worst poll numbers of his presidency. His approval rating has dropped to 41 percent, mostly because of the economy." That was the alpha and omega.

They had no time for anything else, including the other numbers. ABC’s website expanded a bit. "Registered voters by 53-39 percent in the national survey say they'd rather see the Republicans in control of Congress as a counterbalance to Obama’s policies than a Democratic-led Congress to help support him." How was that not part of the story, in either the ABC morning or evening TV news reports?

ABC's poll was no fluke. Shortly thereafter NBC News and The Wall Street Journal found Obama’s approval rating at 44 percent, 50 percent disapproving, still awful. NBC morning anchor Natalie Morales spent only 46 seconds on the poll numbers, this time giving it NBC's shameless Team Obama spin. “President Obama's popularity is up slightly, and so is his embattled health care law, this according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. The President's approval rating is at 44 percent. That's up three points since March. Still, though, 50 percent of those polled disapprove of the job the President is doing.”

By Tim Graham, Apr. 21, 2014, Newsbusters.org

Washington Post media reporter Paul Farhi wrote a big Style section front-pager for Monday on how NBC's Meet the Press, "Sunday's most venerable news show has stumbled in the ratings."

The shocking paragraph that will get discussed around Washington today is that NBC commissioned a psychological consultant to figure how who MTP host David Gregory is, and what makes him tick. Or maybe, why people just don't like him very much:

Last year, the network undertook an unusual assessment of the 43-year-old journalist, commissioning a psychological consultant to interview his friends and even his wife. The idea, according to a network spokeswoman, Meghan Pianta, was "to get perspective and insight from people who know him best." But the research project struck some at NBC as odd, given that Gregory has been employed there for nearly 20 years.

Farhi did not explore that one big difference between Gregory and his predecessor Tim Russert is that Russert could ask some tough questions of Democrats, while Gregory seems to save the hardballs for Republicans. His idea of a recent question on Benghazi for Susan Rice was "Any regrets?" Even the program's interviews with other NBC staff (Andrea Mitchell discussing the personal "magic" with Jimmy Carter, Harry Smith with Bill Maher) are fawning rather than challenging.

"Meet the Press" used to be a show where politicians would prove whether they were leadership material. Now it only shows David Gregory isn't leadership material. Did that require a psychological consultant?

Al Gore
By Tim Graham, Apr. 18, 2014, Newsbusters.org

Weasel Zippers has the latest superiority dance from Al Gore, in a speech at the University of Hawaii.

"Ultimately, we are going to win this thing," he said, one of many statements met with hearty applause from the Hawaiians, reported the Civil Beat. He displayed “a Bell Curve showing the number of hotter days over the past 80 years grow alarmingly disproportionate to the number of cooler days and days with average temperatures.”

"The way we have to respond to this is going to require a set of changes that are beyond our routine," he said, his voice growing to a shout. "I know that we are capable of that. Our way of life is at stake, our grandchildren are at stake, the future of civilization is at stake."

But Gore cited two "game changers" in recent years that will help. The first is the growing realization from even climate-change deniers that something seems to be strange with the weather. The second is the exponential growth in photovoltaic solar panels, driven largely by consumer demand for lower prices.

In one of a pair of Sunday posts at his web site, New England talk show host Michael Graham added an emphatic exclamation point to Brent Bozell's and Tim Graham's Saturday column condemning the cowardice and hypocrisy of Brandeis University's decision to revoke its commencement invitation to Ayaan Hirsi Ali. In the other, Graham roasted the Boston Globe for backing Brandeis.

Bozell and Tim Graham rightly pointed to the university's embrace of particularly nasty anti-Catholic and anti-Israel speakers. Michael Graham found yet another example adding toxic icing to an already rancid cake, and noted that three of its female graduates have achieved a unique level of infamy (links are in each original; bolds are mine throughout):
