Poll: Christie Approval Rating At New Low In N.J.

Chris Christie’s approval ratings continue to drop in his home state, according to a new poll.

Only 30 percent of registered voters surveyed by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind Poll said they approved of the job the possible Republican presidential candidate is doing, while 55 percent disapproved. The approval rating is a six percentage-point drop from April.

The new poll also marks the two-term governor’s lowest approval ratings since he took office in 2010, when he registered 48 percent approval. His rating peaked in November 2012 (just one month after Hurricane Sandy ravaged his state’s coastal areas) at 77 percent and has been on a steady decline ever since. September 2014 was the last time his approval ratings were “above water” (46 percent approval-40 percent disapproval).

The percentage of respondents who said they “like everything” about the governor is also lower than ever at 24 percent. Alternatively, 39 percent “dislike everything” about Christie’s leadership. The remainder of respondents are somewhere in the middle: 23 percent like Christie personally but dislike his policies, and 7 percent dislike him personally but like his policies.

Obama's poll numbers — which had previously slid into the low 40’s — are up, and the president has enjoyed a streak of good headlines.

Those factors, coupled with a rising economy, are making the White House optimistic about his final two years in office.

White House allies say the president feels an increased sense of liberation with the elections over. They predict that he will continue to be proactive in the face of the Republican Congress that will take power early next year.

Obama Approval Settles Into Narrow Range in 2014

President Barack Obama's job approval rating has settled down into a significantly smaller range in 2014 than it has in any of his five previous years in office. This year, through the week that ended Dec. 14, Obama's weekly approval averages have ranged between a high of 45% and a low of 40%. The only other year even close to that narrow range of weekly approval averages was 2010, when his weekly averages ranged over eight percentage points, from 51% to 43%. In each of the other four years, the range in his job approval fell between 11 and 18 points.

Poll: Most See Obama As A Failure

A clear majority of Americans describe President Obama's tenure as a "failure" according to a new poll released Monday.

The survey from IBD/TIPP indicates that 53 percent of adults in the United States now characterize Obama's presidency as a "failure," while 41 percent chalk it up as a success. Half of the people who live in states won by Obama see his tenure negatively, as do 59 percent of those aged 25-44 years old.

Some of the key groups remain solid in their support of the president, though. More than three-quarters of voters aged 18-24 see Obama's presidency as a success, as do 54 percent of single women.

By contrast, only 32 percent of married women describe Obama as a success while 58 percent of independents see him as a failure.

The survey also found that only 43 percent of U.S. adults say they would vote for Obama, who has been besieged by international crises, were a presidential election held today. Some 49 percent would favor 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The slide in approval of the president seems to be primarily driven by concern over his economic record. While three in four Americans say they place a "high importance" on the economy and jobs when evaluating candidates, just 31 percent say Obama is doing a good job at growing the economy.

At a speech last week at Northwestern University, Obama looked to reverse those perceptions, arguing it was "indisputable that our economy is stronger today than it was when I took office." Obama said progress "has been hard, but it has been steady, and it is real."

Barack Obama’s approval rating slid into dangerous territory this week, with the latest Reuters-Ipsos poll showing just 35 percent of Americans approve of the president’s job performance even as he leads the nation into a war against Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East.

Fifty-eight percent of Americans expressed disapproval of the White House’s current occupant — 37 percent of them “strongly.” Just 17 percent strongly approved of Obama’s current performance. The poll is based on a five-day rolling average.

The White House has struggled under a series of escalating foreign-policy crises, at times appearing to flail for a response to Islamic State brutality and the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. The poll likely does not reflect reaction to the administration’s broad air attack on Islamic State targets in Syria, conducted Monday night and slated to continue for the foreseeable future.
