By NB Staff, July 31, 2015 NewsBusters

For the second time in a week, Fox News Channel (FNC) host Bill O’Reilly turned to statistics from the “very accurate” Media Research Center to form the basis of a segment of The O’Reilly Factor concerning the major broadcast network coverage of the Planned Parenthood scandal with Thursday’s mention comparing it with the droves of coverage given to the shooting death of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe.

At the top of his weekly segment with FNC contributor Bernard Goldberg, O’Reilly alluded to “a comparison by the Media Research Center” that he described as having “been very accurate” about “the lion story versus the Planned Parenthood story reportage.” - See more at: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/nb-staff/2015/07/31/oreilly-cites-very-accurate-mrc-numbers-planned-parenthood-lion#sthash.ODCbTdjz.pSgBZnou.dpuf

Media Research Center:  Worst Of The Worst 2014

27th Annual Awards For The Year's Worst Reporting

Welcome to the Media Research Center’s annual awards issue, a compilation of the most outrageous and/or humorous news media quotes from 2014 (December 2013 through November 2014).

To determine this year’s winners, a panel of 40 radio talk show hosts, magazine editors, columnists, editorial writers, and expert media observers each selected their choices for the first, second and third best quote from a slate of five to seven quotes in each category [List of Judges]. First place selections were awarded three points, second place choices two points, with one point for the third place selections. Point totals are listed alongside each quote. Each judge was also asked to choose a “Quote of the Year” denoting the most outrageous quote of 2014.

The MRC’s Kristine Lawrence distributed the ballots and tabulated the results. Senior news analyst Scott Whitlock rounded up the numerous video clips included in the Web-posted version. Rich Noyes and Brent Baker assembled this issue and Brad Ash posted the entire package to the MRC’s Web site: www.MRC.org.

Networks Failed To Expose Doubts in Rolling Stone Rape Story; Devoted 11 Minutes On Evening Shows To Initial Report

Curtis Houck, Dec. 6, 2014, Media Research Center

When the now-retracted article by the Rolling Stone magazine was published on November 19 about a brutal gang rape of a first-year student at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house at the University of Virginia (UVA), the major broadcast networks rushed to the story and devoted multiple segments to both the article and reaction on the school’s campus.

CNN Spends 26 Seconds On Bridgegate Report Clearing Christie; Devoted 8.5 hours On First Day Of Allegations

Curtis Houck, Dec. 5, 2014, Media Research Center

Back in January, when the Bridgegate scandal surfaced, CNN offered wall-to-wall coverage totaling just over eight hours and 35 minutes of coverage on its first full day and featured the Republican Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, at the center of it all.

So, when news surfaced on early Friday morning that a Democrat-led investigation cleared Christie of any wrongdoing, CNN chose to adopt a different approach and all but ignore this news. Through 5:30pm ET, the cable network had spent a scant 26 seconds on the report’s exoneration of Christie.

Sheriffs: Obama Amnesty Is ‘Destruction Of Our Democracy,’ ‘Gaping Hole’ For Terrorists

Craig Bannister, Nov. 4, 2014, Media Research Center

Sheriffs from Maryland to Massachusetts warned of the extreme danger of Pres. Obama’s plan to grant executive amnesty to millions of illegal aliens in the U.S.

Speaking out on Monday, they said amnesty would spell the beginning of the end of democracy in America and would embolden both terrorists and violent criminals.

Syrian Child Sniper: ‘When I Killed Him, I Didn’t Feel Anything’

By Lauretta Brown, Sept. 19, 2014, CNSNews.com

(CNSNews.com) –A Lebanese television channel recently aired a special on child soldiers, featuring an interview with a 12-year-old sniper who joined a group fighting in opposition to Syrian President Bashar Assad after his father was killed on the battlefield.

“I get up in the morning and try to shoot some soldiers,” Midyan Abu Al-Qa’qa’ says on the program, which was translated from LDC TV by the Middle East Research Institute (MEMRI).

“Sometimes I manage to shoot one or two, and sometimes I don’t. There’s nothing to it. I feel fine. I killed my first soldier on this front. When I killed him, I didn’t feel anything. He was the first, but then came a second, and a third…I’ve gotten used to being a sniper,” the pre-teen says.

(MEMRI) posted a portion of the special on YouTube:

The New York Times’ motto is “all the news that’s fit to print” but in their eyes it seems as though the IRS scandal isn’t worth printing all that much.

Research conducted by the Media Research Center found that in the past 6 months (183 days) the New York Times has published only 13 news items on the IRS’ targeting of Tea Party groups. The study focused on the dates of December 25, 2013 until June 26, 2014 and did not include editorial or opinion pieces published in the Times.

In fact, our research found that not a single story on the IRS made it onto the front page of the New York Times and all stories were saved for the National pages deep inside the front section, so an IRS story never came before page A12. Our results were obtained using a Nexis search of key words including “IRS” and “Lois Lerner” and “Tea Party” but did not include stories referencing the IRS scandal as part of larger political stories.

Since December 25, 2013 the front section of the New York Times has run approximately 5,694 stories in its front section, excluding obituaries and opinion/editorial pieces. Of these approximately 5,694 news stories, less than one quarter of one percent of the paper’s front section news stories -centered around the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups.

For example, on Wednesday, June 25, the New York Times buried a story on the United States Archivist accusing the IRS of not following the law in the wake of Lois Lerner's hard drive crash on page A15 and ignored the IRS’ admission of wrongdoing for leaking the tax information of the National Organization for Marriage and subsequently paid the group $50,000 in damages.

Chris Giles, Economics Editor
 Financial Times
By Tom Blumner, May 23, 2014, Newsbusters.org

French economist Thomas Piketty has become a darling of the left for allegedly "proving" that, as paraphrased by Chris Giles at the Financial Times, "wealth inequalities are heading back up to levels last seen before the first world war." The Media Research Center's Julia Seymour has described Piketty as a "'rock star' of the far-left," an accurate assessment given praises heaped upon his book and especially his public policy prescriptions by the likes of Alternet and Vox's especially gullible Matthew Yglesias. Seymour also notes that Piketty's work has received a great deal of favorable notice in the establishment press, and that he has met "with the Treasury Secretary" and "(President) Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers."

Of course these "oligarch groupies," as Jeffrey Lord describes them, love him. Piketty favors an 80 percent tax on incomes above $500,000 and a progressive global tax on real wealth (i.e., after subtracting debt). The problem is that FT's Giles, having done a deep dive into the economist's data and spreadsheets, has found serious problems in the professor's work which nullify his conclusions.

Giles has documented his findings in a summary article and a thoroughly detailed blog post. He has found "a series of errors that skew his (Piketty's) findings" consisting of "mistakes and unexplained entries in his spreadsheets."

Here are several paragraphs from Giles's summary published early Friday afternoon (Eastern Time US):

... The data underpinning Professor Piketty’s 577-page tome, which has dominated best-seller lists in recent weeks, contain a series of errors that skew his findings. The FT found mistakes and unexplained entries in his spreadsheets, similar to those which last year undermined the work on public debt and growth of Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff.
The central theme of Prof Piketty’s work is that wealth inequalities are heading back up to levels last seen before the first world war. The investigation undercuts this claim, indicating there is little evidence in Prof Piketty’s original sources to bear out the thesis that an increasing share of total wealth is held by the richest few.
... In his spreadsheets ... there are transcription errors from the original sources and incorrect formulas. It also appears that some of the data are cherry-picked or constructed without an original source.
... For example, once the FT cleaned up and simplified the data, the European numbers do not show any tendency towards rising wealth inequality after 1970. An independent specialist in measuring inequality shared the FT’s concerns.
Contacted by the FT, Prof Piketty said he had used “a very diverse and heterogeneous set of data sources ... [on which] one needs to make a number of adjustments to the raw data sources.
“I have no doubt that my historical data series can be improved and will be improved in the future ... but I would be very surprised if any of the substantive conclusion about the long-run evolution of wealth distributions was much affected by these improvements,” he said.

At the very least, Piketty has admitted that he didn't mind making "a number of adjustments to the raw data sources" without telling anyone that he had made them.

But it gets worse — much worse — once one looks at Giles's detailed blog post:

By Scott Whitlock, May 22, 2014, Newsbusters.org

In nearly four and a half weeks, the ABC, CBS and NBC morning and evening news shows have offered 110 minutes to an evolving Obama administration scandal involving secret lists designed to keep veterans from receiving proper medical treatment. Back in January, it took those same network shows just four and a half days to churn that much coverage for Chris Christie's Bridgegate.

Since the VA story broke on April 23 with the news that as many as 40 veterans seeking treatment at one Phoenix facility died while on secret waiting lists, CBS has provided the most coverage, 48 minutes and 46 seconds. NBC allowed 44 minutes and 53 seconds and ABC came in last with a scant 16 minutes and 44 seconds. None of the networks bothered covering the story until May 6, almost two weeks after it broke. (This is despite heavy investigative reporting by Fox News and CNN.)

An analysis last week by the Media Research Center found that through the morning of May 16, a mere five seconds of the coverage included criticism of Barack Obama's handling of the VA hospital scandal. Only this week, as the pressure mounted and new details emerged, the storyline finally shifted to including criticisms of the President.

Yet, when Bridgegate appeared on the national radar, the networks swiftly zeroed in on Christie as the focal point for criticism. On January 10, Today journalist Kelly O'Donnell opined, "The crisis feeds into critics' perceptions that Christie fosters hardball tactics." On the January 10 Good Morning America, Jim Avila described a Christie press conference as a "political walk of shame."

In just four and half days, from January 7 through the January 12 morning programs, ABC, CBS and NBC deluged Americans with 112 minutes and 23 seconds of analysis into what Christie knew about an intentional traffic jam created on the George Washington bridge last fall.

Rep. Mike Rogers
By Bill Hoffman, May 16, 2014, Newsmax.com

Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan, who'll host a national radio show when his term ends, made a tactical error in blasting conservative talk giants Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, according to Tim Graham, director of media analysis for the Media Research Center.

"This is not the way you say howdy-do and welcome," Graham told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said in an interview with The New York Times that fans of Hannity and Limbaugh do not learn anything.

"I think there is room for a more productive, you-might-actually-learn-something kind of talk radio in the marketplace,'' Rogers told the newspaper.

"I’m a bit of a canary in a coal mine," he continued. "And I am hoping I don’t choke on fumes at the bottom of the shaft.''

Graham said Rogers' dismissal of his future competition is not the way to launch a radio career.

"You don't come in and say, everybody else here is a moron, and by the way, if you listen to them you're a moron," Graham said.

By Paul Bedard, May 7, 2014, Washingtonexaminer.com

Despite continued news about how the IRS targeted conservative and Tea Party groups leading up to President Obama's re-election and the possibility that former tax official Lois Lerner could be imprisoned by the House for contempt, the Big Three TV networks have dropped the scandal like it never happened.

According to a new Media Research Center report, ABC, CBS and NBC have provided just 14 reports about the scandal over the last 10 months, compared to 136 when it broke in May 2013.

What happened? According to the conservative media watchdog, when a Democratic report was issued in June 2013 suggesting that liberal groups were targeted equally by the IRS, the major media gave up coverage, even though that report was widely rejected, even by Treasury's inspector general.

Since then, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform voted along party lines to recommend that the full House hold Lerner in contempt. A Roll Call report even suggested that the House, after voting, could imprison her.

“The reality is that after this report, the broadcast networks essentially stopped covering the IRS scandal, as if all reasonable observers now agreed it was over,” said MRC’s study about the partisan report suggesting Democrats were equally targeted. “Even as the investigation uncovered new evidence affirming that conservatives were uniquely targeted, and as evidence mounted that the IRS was stonewalling congressional efforts to uncover the truth, ABC, CBS and NBC maintained an almost-absolute moratorium on news about the scandal,” wrote MRC’s Research Director Rich Noyes.

By Sean Long, Apr. 3, 2014, Newsbusters.org
There is a jobs crisis in the U.S. that is going virtually unnoticed by the broadcast networks. The unemployment rate for African Americans towers over the national average, upsetting conservatives and liberals.
In spite of bipartisan outrage, the three broadcast networks gave just 10 seconds combined to the black unemployment rate around the monthly jobs reports in the past year. Liberal Rev. Jesse Jackson was one of many frustrated people. He has complained that “the media [is] dismissing it as not important.”
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data revealed a severe jobs crisis for African-Americans even in recent months. While the national unemployment rate for all races was 6.7 percent in February 2014, the black unemployment rate was almost twice that at 12 percent. There is little doubt that the March jobs report which will be released April 4 will continue to show a devastating gap between the two rates.
The Media Research Center’s Business and Media Institute looked at broadcast network news coverage during the week surrounding the monthly release of jobs data going back for a year. BMI found that the subject of high black unemployment was completely ignored by 98 percent of jobs stories.
Of the 145 jobs-related stories during those weeks, the networks only mentioned the disproportionately high black unemployment rate in two stories. Both were on NBC and spent a combined total of 10 seconds on the “discouraging” black unemployment rate in reports about the overall jobs situation. ABC and CBS completely ignored black unemployment during this period, although they aired 100 stories about jobs.
