WashPost Plays Dumb, Finds 'It's Surprisingly Hard to Say' If Letterman's Liberal

By Tim Graham, May 23, 2015, Newsbusters

Washington Post political correspondent Chris Cillizza spent way too much time claiming the personal political views of David Letterman were some kind of mystery. The headline was "Is David Letterman liberal? It's surprisingly hard to say." No. It's not.

Cillizza does this despite mentioning the Geoffrey Dickens Top Ten list of liberal outbursts posted at NewsBusters. Cillizza does this despite noting he donated more than $12,000 to electing Democrat Al Franken to the U.S. Senate.

What has barely been touched amid all of these words is Letterman's politics. He commanded a huge audience for much of his 33 years in late night and virtually every politician who ever considered running for or served in national office sat on his couch. And yet, despite that perch, people are generally hard pressed to give any sort of assessment of Letterman's personal politics.

"He was pretty tough on [Hillary Rodham Clinton] in 1999/2000 until she appeared on the show," recalled Howard Wolfson, who was a longtime Clinton confidant. "I always found him very substantive in his political interviews. I didn't really detect an ideology."

Bill Cosby: Netflix & NBC Pull Shows After Rape Allegations

Elizabeth Wagmeister, Nov. 19, 2014, Hollywood Life

In the wake of his shocking sexual abuse allegations, Netflix announced Bill Cosby‘s comedy special, titled Bill Cosby 77, has been indefinitely postponed. Following the streaming service’s decision, NBC has reportedly given the axe to the comedian’s upcoming project.

Netflix isn’t the first to to take action. His appearances on Late Night With David Letterman and The Queen Latifah Show were both cancelled, amid the sexual abuse scandal.

CBS & David Letterman Slapped With Latest Intern Class Action Lawsuit

By Dominic Patten, Sept. 8, 2014, Deadline.com

ICM Partners might be happy to hear today that they are not the latest industry enterprise to be hit with an interns lawsuit, but it’s a good bet CBS and The Late Show With David Letterman are not. The network and the late-night show have been walloped with a class action of their own: Late last week, Mallory Musallam filed a class action complaint against CBS Broadcasting, CBS Corp. and the retiring late-night host’s Worldwide Pants on behalf herself and everyone who has ever been an intern on the show. “Named Plaintiff has initiated this action seeking for herself, and on behalf of all similarly situated employees that also worked on The Late Show With David Letterman, all compensation, including minimum wages and overtime compensation, which they were deprived of, plus interest, attorneys’ fees, and costs,” says the jury demanding filing in New York Supreme Court (read it here). The filing comes as ICM Partners fights to shut down a potentially sprawling complaint from ex-interns.

(UPDATE, 10:36 AM: CBS have come out defending their intern programs and say they “intend to vigorously defend against the claims” in Musallam’s complaint. “This lawsuit is part of a nationwide trend of class action lawyers attacking internship opportunities provided by companies in the media and entertainment industry,” said the network Monday in a statement. “We pride ourselves on providing valuable internship experiences, and we take seriously all of our obligations under relevant labor and employment laws. We intend to vigorously defend against the claims.”)

By Matt Hardo, Apr. 10, 2013, Newsbuster.org

On Thursday evening, both CBS and NBC hailed the arrival of comedian Stephen Colbert at CBS but failed to acknowledge his routine of posing as a mock-conservative host at Comedy Central.

Colbert's persona was a conservative TV host who was, in his own words, a "well-intentioned, poorly-informed, high-status idiot."  His show was a mockery of a conservative host.  Yet CBS and NBC glossed over the "conservative" bit, remaining neutral on the details and referring to his character as simply his "know-it-all alter ego."

"The Colbert Report, as he calls it, has won four Emmys and two Peabody awards by skewering politicians, the media and Hollywood," reported CBS's Ben Tracy, who left out Colbert's liberal routine.

NBC wouldn't identify the bias of his character, either.  "Colbert said today he will host as himself, meaning he will drop the character, the persona he uses to host the Colbert Report," reported Brian Williams on the NBC Nightly News.

NBC said he was the member of the new "comedy graduating class" while CBS called him one of "a new generation of night time hosts.
