Sanders: Majority Of Gun Owners Are Responsible And Obey The Law

Vermont liberal Sen. Bernie Sanders said Sunday that the majority of gun owners are responsible and obey the law.

Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, Sanders said that a gun manufacturer should be no more responsible for a murder performed by their product than a hammer manufacturer is responsible "if someone beat someone over the head with a hammer."

Sanders was taking on detractors who have pointed to a bill he voted for that shields firearms manufacturers from being sued by gun violence victims. Presidential rival Hillary Clinton made reference to this bill in New Hampshire Saturday, saying that it was the "height of irresponsibility not to talk about it."

Sanders noted Sunday that he has a pretty poor grade of a D- from the National Rifle Association and has voted for the assault weapons ban.

Sanders suggested that he could broker a "serious debate and action on guns," but that it won't happen if "we have extreme positions on both sides."

Hillary Restrains Press Behind Rope At July 4 Parade

Via Soopermexican at The Right Scoop, we learn Hillary spent Independence Day corralling her dependent traveling press corps behind a rope -- literally.

This is a prime example of how Hillary's imperious nature created a visual that telegraphs to voters how she wants to campaign in a bubble and isn't really interested in transparency. Can you imagine a Republican being able to rope off the press corps without it damaging their image? The Daily Mail reported:

As Hillary Clinton walked freely down a New Hampshire road, she shook hands and greeted residents with a smile.

But the members of the press accompanying her were a bit more restricted in their movements - as they were guided through the streets with a rope.

The former Secretary of State's campaign staff kept reporters, cameramen and photographers at arm's length as she joined a July 4 parade in Gorham - fueling speculation she is trying to control the media.

For Donald Trump the entrepreneur, it was a damaging week. Two major television networks severed ties, Macy’s dropped his clothing line and Carlos Slim, the even richer Mexican tycoon, ended a joint venture with him.

But for Donald Trump the inveterate showman and Republican challengerfor president, the week was a triumph as he climbed in the opinion polls anddominated media coverage, despite the backlash against his decision to condemn Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug traffickers.

“Wow, Huffington Post just stated that I am number one in the polls of Republican candidates,” the brash billionaire bragged as the week closed, citing the liberal media outlet that has been a platform for many of the strongest attacks on him. “Thank you, but the work has just begun!”

Mr Trump was touting his first place in an average of 105 polls. Of the 14 candidates who have declared, Trump topped the field with 13.6 per cent support to 13.3 per cent for Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor and son and brother of two past presidents.

Cruz Presidential Campaign Says Supporters Donated $51 Million

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator Ted Cruz and the outside groups supporting his presidential bid have raised more than $51 million in the three months since he launched his campaign for president, according to a statement from his campaign on Sunday.

Cruz, who announced his candidacy on March 23 in a speech at the conservative school Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, has raised far less in donations directly to his campaign than his supporters have collected for the four outside spending groups supporting him.

The statement said there were 175,000 individual donations to the campaign with an average contribution of $81. About $10 million came in during the second quarter of the year.

Final figures from political action committees supporting him have not been released yet but the Cruz campaign said that in June the groups announced having already brought in more than $37 million.

I mean she wasn't this progressive firebrand?” Jones agreed: “And neither was the Democratic Party, a party of firebrands.”

First On CNN: Sanders Snags Key Endorsement In New Hampshire

Wolfeboro, New Hampshire (CNN)Sen. Bernie Sanders has snagged a key endorsement in New Hampshire that may sting a little for Martin O'Malley's campaign.

Longtime New Hampshire Democratic activist Dudley Dudley told CNN Friday that she has decided to endorse Bernie Sanders for the Democratic 2016 nomination. Her decision comes less than two months after she hosted O'Malley at both her Durham, New Hampshire homes.

Since then, according to a recent CNN/WMUR New Hampshire primary poll, frontrunner Hillary Clinton's lead over Sanders has shrunk from 38 percentage points to 8, with O'Malley trailing both. Likely Democratic primary voters are now more apt to see Sanders as the candidate who "best represents the values of Democrats like yourself," the poll found.

Sanders recently finished a two-day swing through the state that saw 500-person crowds and high attendance at more intimate house parties.

The outspoken presidential candidate and real estate magnate Donald Trump is once again defending his comments he made about illegal aliens from Mexico being criminals. He said he was surprised by the backlash.

“The crime is raging and it’s violent. And if you talk about it, it’s racist,” Trump told Fox News, days after an illegal Mexican immigrant deported five previous times allegedly killed a woman in San Francisco.

He made the remarks during his June 16 presidential announcement speech.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best,” he said during the announcement. “They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they’re telling us what we’re getting.”

“I didn’t know it was going to be this severe,” Trump said Saturday. “I am a whipping post.”

D’Souza: 'My Rap Sheet Is Nothing Compared To The Clintons’

Conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza remarked on the Hellish nature of a potential Hillary Clinton presidency and said his own criminal rap sheet is nothing compared to the one compiled by Bill and Hillary Clinton.

In a candid interview in the New York Times magazine July 2, D’Souza talks at length about his experience in the American penal system, from which he was recently released after serving time for a campaign finance violation.

“If you put my rap sheet alongside the Clinton rap sheet, I think that would be almost a prima facie case that they have gotten away with far more than I have. My crime consisted of giving away too much money. I didn’t benefit from it in any way,” D’Souza said.

“When I think of a Hillary administration, I’m reminded of the sign on the outer gates of hell [in Dante’s ‘Inferno’]: ‘Abandon all hope, ye who enter here,'” D’Souza said.

Clinton Says She Takes A 'Backseat To No One' Among Liberals

HANOVER, N.H. (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday she takes a "backseat to no one" on championing liberal causes, presenting herself as a standard-bearer for Democrats as primary challenger Bernie Sanders generates large, energetic crowds.

Clinton addressed 850 people at an outdoor amphitheater at Dartmouth College, a last-minute venue change made to accommodate a larger audience. Days earlier, Sanders spoke before about 10,000 people in Madison, Wisconsin. The former secretary of state made no mention of Sanders but warned that Republicans would unravel President Barack Obama's policies if they recaptured the White House, including the repeal of his signature health care overhaul.

"I take a backseat to no one when you look at my record of standing up and fighting for progressive values," Clinton said on a sun-dappled kickoff to the Fourth of July weekend in Hanover, New Hampshire, across the Connecticut River from Sanders' home state of Vermont.

Reporters traveling with Hillary Clinton were given the opportunity to ask the Democratic presidential contender a few questions Friday — and they lobbed a few softballs her direction.

Here’s a transcript of the question and answer session from the pool report:

Q: Bernie got almost 10,000 people at his recent rally. What does that say about him as a candidate and why aren’t you drawing those crowds.

A: “well, we each run or own campaigns and I always knew this was gonna be competitive, and i want to have a great debate in the primary and caucuses around the country and that’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Q: (exact phrasing inaudible) question about the Clintons’ connection to the state.

A: “You know, that’s really true. We are so fond of and grateful to New Hampshire. We have friends hat we’ve made over the years that we’ve stayed in close touch with. I obviously care deeply about the state and admire so many of the public officials, Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan is a good friend, so I love coming to New Hampshire, and I love going to every part of the state, and I’m happy to be here in the upper valley.”

Hillary Clinton is privately signaling to wealthy Jewish donors that — no matter the result of the Iranian nuclear negotiations — she will be a better friend to Israel than President Barack Obama.

But, even as donors increasingly push Clinton on the subject in private, they have emerged with sometimes widely varying interpretations about whether she would support a prospective deal, according to interviews with more than 10 influential donors and fundraising operatives.

Clinton’s private responses in some ways resemble a foreign policy Rorschach test; donors who see a deal as important to world peace have come away thinking that Clinton shares their perspective, but so, too, do donors who oppose any prospective agreement as compromising Israeli security.

Hispanic Leaders Say Republican Party Must Condemn Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hispanic leaders are bristling at the largely tepid response by Republican presidential candidates to Donald Trump's characterization of Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug dealers.

Several 2016 contenders have brushed off Trump's comments while others have ignored them. Marco Rubio, a Florida senator who is Hispanic, denounced them as "not just offensive and inaccurate, but also divisive," after declining for two weeks to address the matter directly. Another Hispanic in the race, Ted Cruz, said Trump is "terrific," "brash" and "speaks the truth."

It's an uncomfortable moment for Republicans, who want more votes from the surging Latino population.

And it could be a costly moment if more candidates don't go beyond their Donald-will-be-Donald response and condemn him directly, said Alfonso Aguilar, a Republican who leads the American Principles Project's Latino Partnership.

Democratic Ex-Va. Sen. Jim Webb Announces Presidential Bid

Washington (CNN)Former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb announced Thursday that "after many months of thought, deliberation and discussion" he has decided to run for president of the United States.

In an over 2,000-word blog post, Webb writes that he decided to run because the United States needs "proven, experienced leadership that can be trusted to move us forward from a new President's first days in office."

Highlighting his experience as a senator, decorated soldier and and secretary of the navy under Ronald Reagan, Webb cast himself as someone willing to fight on issues he cares about, including criminal justice reform, education and economic fairness.

Webb becomes the fifth Democrat to join the primary contest. Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state and first lady, is the race's frontrunner, with every poll showing her up by wide margins. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is experiencing a recent jump in the polls and in excitement, while former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee have stagnated since announcing they would run.

Joe Biden Likely To Join 2016 White House Race Next Month, Top Fundraiser Says

Vice President Joseph R. Biden’s team is putting out the word that he is leaning in favor of joining the presidential race next month, according to a prominent Democratic fundraiser.

The veep’s entrance would dramatically shake up the Democratic contest, confronting front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton with a formidable opponent who is equally well-known across the country and poised to tap a network of major donors.

“They have given increasingly strong signals that Biden is going to throw his hat in the ring,” said New York businessman Jon Cooper, a top bundler for President Obama’s 2012 campaign who has been testing the waters with fellow bundlers for a Biden run.

“I’m as confident as I can be that he will be entering the race,” he said.

Mr. Biden had been noncommittal about his plans for next year, though he never ruled out another run for president.

Soros Helps Pro-Clinton Super PACs To $20 Million Haul

A trio of pro-Hillary Clinton groups raised more than $24 million in the first half of the year, including $2 million each from billionaires George Soros and Haim Saban, POLITICO has learned.

Priorities USA Action, a super PAC dedicated to airing ads supporting Clinton and attacking her opponents, revealed Thursday that it raised $15.6 million during the first half of the year, including $2 million from Hollywood mogul Saban and $1 million from financier Soros.

American Bridge 21st Century, an opposition research super PAC founded by Clinton enforcer David Brock, raised $7.7 million — including $1 million from Soros — an official with the group said Wednesday. A linked non-profit group called American Bridge 21st Century Foundation – which is not required to disclose its donors – raised an additional $1 million, the official said.

Madison, Wisconsin (CNN) Bernie Sanders has been running for president for two months, but Wednesday night in Madison, Wisconsin, his long-shot campaign got real.

When Sanders walked on stage at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, he was greeted by a raucous, howling crowd of 9,600 people, according to Sanders' campaign aides and arena staff.

A clearly energized Sanders, who late last year was speaking to crowds of 50 people in Iowa classrooms, appeared taken aback by the reception he received.

"Whoa," he said. "In case you haven't noticed, there are a lot of people here."

Unfortunately, real life never turns out to be as interesting as it appears on TV. Digging through Hillary Clinton's emails, for example, The New York Timesturned up that she's — pretty normal? Boring, even? Only two dozen correspondences were flagged as confidential, with the rest of this month's batch relating mostly to logistics, scheduling, and calendar rearrangements. Who'd have thought that behind the scenes was so dull?

The emails did reveal, though, that Paul Begala — a CNN political commentator and former advisor to Bill Clinton — needed a couple talking points about Hillary before he went on air to rate her:

Guess Where Mexico-Bashing Donald Trump Makes His Suits?

Donald Trump has had some nasty things to say about Mexicans lately. In the announcement of his 2016 bid for the US presidency, he called Mexican immigrants to the US criminals and “rapists.” Later, on Twitter, he added, “Mexico is not our friend. They’re killing us at the border and they’re killing us on jobs and trade.”

It seems to follow that Trump would disapprove of American companies manufacturing their goods in Mexico too, except that Trump apparently does it himself. A photo circulated on Twitter by BuzzFeed political reporter Adrian Carrasquillo shows a jacket from Trump’s clothing linebearing a “made in Mexico” label.
