By Reuters, May 04, 2017

Family members of three victims of the December 2015 shooting rampage in San Bernardino, California, have sued Facebook, Google and Twitter, claiming that the companies permitted Islamic State to flourish on social media.

The relatives assert that by allowing Islamic State militants to spread propaganda freely on social media, the three companies provided "material support" to the group and enabled attacks such as the one in San Bernardino.

The lawsuit is the second in recent weeks where more than a dozen Pulse victims or their families are now suing over the tragedy. The other big lawsuit is directed at the G4S security firm, where the shooter worked as a security guard, and his wife.

One of the new plaintiffs in the social media case is Christine Leinonen, mother of deceased victim Christopher “Drew” Leinonen. She has been one of the most visible activists among the Pulse victims’ families, appearing at the Democratic National Convention during the presidential campaign to speak about curbing gun violence.

By USA Today, Dec. 20, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook, Google and Twitter are being sued by the families of three victims slain in the mass shooting at an Orlando nightclub for allegedly providing "material support" to the Islamic State.

The lawsuit, first reported by Fox News, was filed Monday in federal court in the eastern district of Michigan on behalf of the families of Tevin Crosby, Javier Jorge-Reyes and Juan Ramon Guerrero.

The lawsuit is the latest to target popular Internet services for making it too easy for the Islamic State to spread its message. In June, the family of a California college student killed in  last year's terrorist attacks in Paris sued Facebook, Google and Twitter. Keith Altman, the attorney representing the three families in the Orlando nightclub lawsuit, also represents the family of that student, Nohemi Gonzalez, in the Paris terrorist attacks lawsuit.

By Jason Molinet, Aug 07, 2015 NT Daily News

Someone needs a Twitter time out.

Donald Trump was still on the offensive in every sense of the word, hours after the GOP debate ended.

First he elbowed his way through the crowded field of Republican presidential hopefuls on stage in Cleveland. Then he lambasted Fox News moderator Megyn Kelly and analyst Frank Luntz, saving his most pointed attacks of the night for the media personalities.

Scott Walker Officially Announces 2016 Presidential On Twitter

By Associated Press , July 13, 2015 Real Clear Politics

Walker, a Republican who built a national profile largely due to his clashes with labor unions, also released a campaign video at the same time declaring his entry in the race.

The video is heavy on images of Walker speaking to a crowd in an Iowa cornfield, as well as his 2010 battle with unions. The video includes Walker speaking directly to the camera touting his willingness to take on big fights.
“We didn’t nibble around the edges,” he says.

Walker has a national profile largely due to his clashes with labor unions.
He enacted policies weakening their political power and became the first governor in U.S. history to defeat a recall election. Now, on the eve of his campaign launch, Walker’s task is to remind Republican voters about the four-year-old fight and the recall election sparked by his efforts to weaken unions — and a series of lesser-known triumphs he says set him apart from the crowded Republican field.

On Twitter, CNN Blames GOP For Disgraced Former OPM Director

By Matthew Balan, July 10, 2015 NewsBusters

CNN Politics's Twitter account on Friday pointed the finger at congressional Republicans over the now-former director of the Office of Personnel Management's responsibility for the massive hacking there that compromised the personal data of over 22 million people. A post hyped that "Republicans acknowledge to [correspondent] @evanperez they didn't properly vet [Katherine] Archuleta's qualifications."

In their CNN.com article on Director Archuleta's resignation, Perez and journalist Wesley Bruer actually spotlighted the responsibility of the Obama administration for nominating her and how "aides to Republican lawmakers who voted for her confirmation now acknowledge they didn't pay enough attention to the importance of technology in the agency Archuleta was taking over:"

Outrage As Twitter Reveals Just 49 Of Its 3,000 US Employees Are Black

By Mia De Graff, July 2, 2015, Daily Mail

Twitter only has 49 black employees - out of 2,910 staff members in America.

The 35 men and 14 women account for just 1.7 per cent of the firm's US operation, which is 93.8 per cent white or Asian.

Slamming the figures, released in a compulsory Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) report, Rev Jesse Jackson said people are 'becoming intolerant' of the stilted progress.

'Black people are greater users of the product and capable of doing the jobs, but there has not been an adequate commitment to hire, train and maintain [black people],' the civil rights leader, who is spearheading calls for diversity in tech, told The Guardian.

The number of Hispanic employees also fails to reflect the proportion of Latino users, and of America's Latino population.

Twenty seven per cent of black adults use the site, and 25 per cent of Latinos, compared to 21 per cent of white users, according to the Pew Research Center.

ISIS Posts 100,000 Tweets Per Day

By The Brussels Times, Jun. 30, 2015

A new transatlantic campaign has pledged to challenge extremist groups like ISIS which misuse the internet to spread their radicalising and extremist ideology and recruit vulnerable Europeans to fight in overseas conflict zones including Iraq and Syria.

The “Counter Extremism Project Europe” (CEP Europe) is a partnership between organisations in the U.S. and Europe and among other projects including the launch of an innovative counter narrative seeks to combat the use of social media to radicalise young Muslims.

At the launch, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and You Tube were urged to intensify their efforts to curb the extremist “narrative” which inspire deadly terrorist attacks such as those seen in recent days in Tunisia, France and Kuwait.

Twitter was singled out as one social media platform that, according to former senior U.S. diplomat Mark Wallace could do “much, much more” to stop extremist misuse of their sites.

With ISIS alone posting between 90,000 to 100,000 tweets per day, he believes governments are “falling behind” in the cyber war with terrorist groups who are successful using modern technology to recruit and radicalise “vulnerable “ Muslims.

ISIS Advances Into Iraq's Ramadi Amid Wave Of Suicide Attacks

By Sameer N. Yacoub, May 16, 2015, Huffington Post

BAGHDAD, May 15 (Reuters) - Islamic State militants raised their black flag over the local government headquarters in the Iraqi city of Ramadi on Friday and claimed victory through mosque loudspeakers after overrunning most of the western provincial capital.

If Ramadi were to fall it would be the first major city seized by the insurgents in Iraq since security forces and paramilitary groups began pushing them back last year.

The insurgents attacked Ramadi overnight using six suicide car bombs to reach the city center, where the Anbar provincial government compound is located, police sources said.

Fighting continued in one district of Ramadi, 100 km (60 miles) west of Baghdad, and government forces were still in control of a military command center to the west of the city.

"The situation in Ramadi is dire, but the city has not fallen and the battle against criminal Daesh is still ongoing," Anbar governor Sohaib al-Rawi said on Twitter, using an Arabic name for Islamic State.

Ramadi has been fought over for months, but the insurgents renewed their offensive there in April, crushing government forces' efforts to retake Anbar, Iraq's largest province, and move north to the Islamic State stronghold of Mosul.

Twitter Co-Founders Just Lost Almost $750 Million

By Sarah Frier, Apr. 26, 2015, Bloomberg

Twitter Inc. co-founders Evan Williams and Jack Dorsey lost almost $750 million in paper wealth this afternoon after the company posted first-quarter revenue that fell short of estimates.

The microblogging business also cut its sales forecast as the company struggles to attract more users and advertisers. The stock fell 18 percent, fueled by the early release of results.

Williams, who owns 7.5 percent of the San Francisco-based company, dropped almost $525 million, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Dorsey, who also co-founded Square Inc., a mobile-payments company, lost about $220 million.

Twitter's revenue is a new concern for investors, who have spent the past year criticizing slowing user growth. Sales will be $470 million to $485 million in the second quarter, the company said in a statement Tuesday, missing analysts’ average projection for $538.1 million.

Trevor Noah Criticized As Anti-Semitic Due To Twitter History

By THR Staff, Mar. 31, 2015

On Monday Trevor Noah was named Jon Stewart's replacement as host of The Daily Show. By Tuesday, the Internet had uncovered old tweets of his, which critics are labeling as anti-Semitic and sexist.

While Noah's past jokes invited backlash, there are people who jumped to his defense as well. The South African comedian alluded to the criticism in a tweet on Tuesday morning, which he quickly deleted. He wrote, "Twitter does not have enough characters to respond to all the characters on Twitter."

Here are some of Noah's tweets being revisited:

CNN Anchor Tweets Out Photo of 'Measles Shot Scar'

By Oliver Darcy, Feb. 2, 2015, TheBlaze.com

CNN anchor Don Lemon tweeted out a photo Monday evening that generated immediate backlash online.

“My #measles shot scar from childhood. Do we still need it?” he asked on Twitter.

The problem? The scar Lemon tweeted was likely not caused by a Measles shot, but rather from Smallpox vaccine — and Twitter users were quick to point that out.

“That’s smallpox vaccine,” one individual tweeted to him.

Rupert Murdoch Rips 'Hollywood Leftists' Over 'American Sniper'

Hollywood Reporter, Jan. 23, 2015

Murdoch wrote on Twitter, "Hollywood leftists trash American Hero, show how completely out of touch they are with America. Bravo Clint Eastwood!" He added, clarifying, "Yes, American Sniper!"

On Monday, Rogen tweeted that American Sniper "kind of reminds" him of the Nazi propaganda film about a sniper showing near the end of Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. He later clarified that tweet, writing that he liked American Sniper and that he wasn't comparing the two, just saying one reminded him of the other.

Hillary Clinton Tweets Support For Obama's Economic View
Catalina Camia, Jan. 21, 2015, USA Today

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s response to the State of the Union was a simple tweet hailing President Obama’s comments on the economy.

Clinton, a likely presidential candidate and former secretary of State, made no mention of foreign policy in her tweet. Like Obama, she stressed the need to “step up and deliver for the middle class.”

Michael Moore Offers Opinion On 'American Sniper' Following Sniper Tweets

Christopher Rosen, Jan. 19, 2015, Huffington Post

Oh ... and too bad Clint gets Vietnam and Iraq confused in his storytelling. And that he has his characters calling Iraqis "savages" throughout the film. But there is also anti-war sentiment expressed in the movie. And there's a touching ending as the main character is remembered after being gunned down by a fellow American vet with PTSD who was given a gun at a gun range back home in Texas -- and then used it to kill the man who called himself the 'America [sic] Sniper'.

Jeffrey Lord, Dec. 13, 2014, Newsbusters

The award winning actress Lena Dunham has been in the news for a controversy over her memoir Not That Kind of Girl, in which Dunham claims to have been raped during her time at Oberlin College by someone identified as “Barry,” the campus conservative.
