(CNN) - It all started on a quiet Friday night, when CNN re-aired Don Lemon's interview with LeBron James.

 The interview focused on James' contributions to his hometown of Akron, Ohio, including a new public school for at-risk third- and fourth-graders there. But the two men also discussed politics. James told Lemon that President Donald Trump has used athletics and athletes to divide the country.

HOSTIN: “I was surprised to hear the young people saying this, because you think that as we go through our society, the pendulum swings, and, you know, our millennials should do better because they clearly should know better. So, when I saw this, though, it showed me if the house mother is doing this, this is so pervasive in the culture of that fraternity that it now is very clear that this is an institutional problem. It’s just maddening that we’re still talking about these issues, although I’m happy like Marc says, that we are talking about these issues.”

LEMON: “Sunny, she’s singing a song. She’s singing a song that those words are in the song.” [crosstalk]

HOSTIN: “Don, you know I have issue. We should never use the N-word. No one should use it.”

LEMON: “I hate that word, no one should use that word. And so, it’s — I know people who are her age who are my color who say that word when they’re saying a rap song.” [crosstalk]

HOSTIN: “It should be retired.”

LEMON: “It should be retired. I don’t know if that makes her racist because she sang it in a song or because some kids goaded her singing a rap song.” [crosstalk]

LEMON: “I don’t know if that makes her racist.”

BLITZER: “Hold on one second.”

MORIAL: “I also question her common sense. She appeared —“

LEMON: “Yes, I agree with that.”

MORIAL: “She appeared in an interview in effect expressing shock, surprise and disappointment. And then, it’s revealed that she used the word and she was —“

LEMON: “Don’t you think it’s out of context? She’s using it in context to sing a song, which people do all the time. I’m not saying it’s right. Is she really racist?”

HOSTIN: “Oh, come on, Don.”

LEMON: “Because some kids are goading her into singing a song that contains the N-word?”

HOSTIN: “It’s clear she’s so duplicitous. She’s so duplicitous.” [crosstalk]

LEMON: “If she’s flat out calling people the N-word, that is a different thing. She’s singing a song, I think that’s different. What’s the song we say, “these hoes ain’t loyal,” do I — am I really calling women that word? No. Am I singing a song in the club? Yes. Does that make misogynistic?” [crosstalk]

HOSTIN: “You’re appearing apples and elephants. OK? It’s completely different.”

LEMON: “I’m not saying it’s right. I’m saying there’s context to everything.”

CNN anchor Don Lemon tweeted out a photo Monday evening that generated immediate backlash online.

“My #measles shot scar from childhood. Do we still need it?” he asked on Twitter.


The problem? The scar Lemon tweeted was likely not caused by a Measles shot, but rather from Smallpox vaccine — and Twitter users were quick to point that out.

“That’s smallpox vaccine,” one individual tweeted to him.

The CNN anchor was describing the scene from outside the Ferguson police station Monday night, just moments after the announcement that police officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted for killing unarmed teenager Michael Brown. Speaking with Anderson Cooper, Lemon reported hearing the sounds of gunfire and seeing protesters jumping on cars.

And then he said: "Obviously, there is the smell of marijuana in the air."

But to viewers at home, that wasn't obvious at all. The comments immediately sparked backlash on Twitter.

NBC News political director and chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd publicly criticized CNN this week for its relentless use of the "breaking news" chyron on stories related to missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370.
"Another day of 'breaking news' based on finding nothing or in other words, 'not breaking news,'" Todd, who also hosts MSNBC's "Daily Rundown," wrote on Twitter on Friday morning.

"I know it may look like I am casting stones while potentially living in a glass house. But the mistakes of one news org hurts ALL of us," he wrote. "Then it becomes 'the media' is abusing 'breaking news' — no it's not 'the media' in general."

CNN’s Don Lemon has been entertaining all sorts of theories about the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, including the chance something “supernatural” happened, but on Wednesday night, he actually asked panelists about the possibility a black hole was involved.
Lemon brought this up along with other “conspiracy theories” people have been floating on Twitter, including people noting the eerie parallels to Lost and The Twilight Zone, and wondered, “is it preposterous” to consider a black hole as a possibility?
