ISIS Posts 100,000 Tweets Per Day

By The Brussels Times, Jun. 30, 2015

A new transatlantic campaign has pledged to challenge extremist groups like ISIS which misuse the internet to spread their radicalising and extremist ideology and recruit vulnerable Europeans to fight in overseas conflict zones including Iraq and Syria.

The “Counter Extremism Project Europe” (CEP Europe) is a partnership between organisations in the U.S. and Europe and among other projects including the launch of an innovative counter narrative seeks to combat the use of social media to radicalise young Muslims.

At the launch, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and You Tube were urged to intensify their efforts to curb the extremist “narrative” which inspire deadly terrorist attacks such as those seen in recent days in Tunisia, France and Kuwait.

Twitter was singled out as one social media platform that, according to former senior U.S. diplomat Mark Wallace could do “much, much more” to stop extremist misuse of their sites.

With ISIS alone posting between 90,000 to 100,000 tweets per day, he believes governments are “falling behind” in the cyber war with terrorist groups who are successful using modern technology to recruit and radicalise “vulnerable “ Muslims.

Justice Department Studying ‘Far-Right’ Social Media Use

By Elisabeth Harrington, Jun. 1, 2015

The Department of Justice is concentrating on “far-right” groups in a new study of social media usage aimed at combatting violent extremism.

The Justice Department’s National Institute of Justice (NIJ) awarded Michigan State University $585,719 for the study, which was praised by Eric Holder, the former attorney general, earlier this year.

“There is currently limited knowledge of the role of technology and computer mediated communications (CMCs), such as Facebook and Twitter, in the dissemination of messages that promote extremist agendas and radicalize individuals to violence,” according to the NIJ grant. “The proposed study will address this gap through a series of qualitative and quantitative analyses of posts from various forms of CMC used by members of both the far-right and Islamic extremist movements.”

Oklahoma Beheading: Warning Signs In Social Media Postings

By Julia Davis, Sept. 26, 2014, Examiner.com

On September 25, 2014, Alton Nolen, who recently converted to Islam, burst into a Moore, Oklahoma food distribution center and savagely beheaded his 54-year-old co-worker, Colleen Hufford. He proceeded to attack and stab another female 43-year-old, Traci Johnson. Before he could behead his second intended victim, Nolen was non-fatally shot by a CEO/off-duty reserve sheriff's deputy, Mark Vaughan.

Nolen had been in prison until March 2013, for possession of a controlled substance, escaping confinement and resisting an officer. It is unknown at this point whether the food processing plant was aware of Nolen’s criminal history at the time he was hired to work there. He was reportedly fired shortly before the gruesome attack, after arguing with his colleagues about whether it is acceptable to stone women to death. Before losing his job at Vaughan Foods in Moore, Oklahoma, Nolen had been actively trying to convert co-workers to Islam.

By Maxine Williams, Jun. 25, 2014, Global Head of Diversity

Today we’re making Facebook’s current diversity figures available publicly for the first time.

At Facebook, diversity is essential to achieving our mission. We build products to connect the world, and this means we need a team that understands and reflects many different communities, backgrounds and cultures. Research also shows that diverse teams are better at solving complex problems and enjoy more dynamic workplaces. So at Facebook we’re serious about building a workplace that reflects a broad range of experience, thought, geography, age, background, gender, sexual orientation, language, culture and many other characteristics.

Below is the current demographic data for the company:

Jack Coleman, Apr. 13, 2014, Newsbusters.org

When it comes to a manufactured issue such as unequal pay between men and women, a disparity that exists only in the aggregate and evaporates among individuals, you can expect to hear a fair number of suspect claims.

But an assertion made by National Organization for Women president Terry O'Neill while a guest on Ed Schultz's radio show last week, talking about the proposed Paycheck Fairness Act, went beyond suspicious toward something more closely resembling the inane. (Audio) --

SCHULTZ: Lamar Alexander, senator from Tennessee, the conservative position is, is that he thinks that this is going to result in more lawsuits, he thinks that this, basically, the free market is going to take care of all of this, that it would end up getting government involvement into the business world. What's your response to that? Especially the fact the lawsuit end of it, what about that? I mean, it would seem to me that it would reduce lawsuits.

O'NEILL: Well, I think over time it should reduce lawsuits but let's be clear, we do not have a free market today and the labor market is not free and a major reason why it's not free is the employers have an unfair advantage. They have transparency. They know everything they need to know about their employees, all they have to do is go on Facebook. They've got, I mean, you've got, you've got serious non-transparency issues (chuckles as lunacy of what she just said sinks in) that are only going to get worse in the age of technological information, right? But what do employees really know about their employers? Very little. It is a black box. We don't know, employees generally don't know the reasoning that goes behind the wage rates that are set by the employer. And if you don't have equal knowledge on two sides of a transaction, you don't have a free market. So anybody talking about a free market, they need to be honest and say a free market actually is one in which the employees have as much knowledge as the employer, right? So, so what you need to create a free market are policies, rules, the employer has to be transparent, just like the employee is transparent. Once you get those rules in place, and enforced, then you start seeing the free market operate correctly. And frankly, I think in the short run there will be more lawsuits and there should be.
