Police Baffled By ‘Random’ Hollywood Murder Of Woman On Street

Baffled Los Angeles cops canvassed a popular Tinseltown tourist area on Tuesday, scrambling for any clues into the seemingly senseless murder of a woman walking down the street.

Carrie Jean Melvin, 30, and her boyfriend were strolling on Sunset Boulevard near McCadden Place just after 10 p.m. Sunday when a man walked up behind her, pointed a shotgun and opened fire, police said.
The suspect jumped into a black sedan and got away. The boyfriend was not injured in the brutal attack and stayed with his mortally wounded gal pal, police said.

“We’ve interviewed the boyfriend, there’s no indication that they had any idea there were enemies [of Melvin], that she would be targeted, so at this point, we just don’t know,” said LAPD Detective John Skaggs.

The glamorous life of Hollywood stars can sometimes seem hard for the average person to relate to. But when it comes to dealing with gender discrimination, it looks like today's female stars are -- unfortunately -- just like us!

Even in the upper echelon of Hollywood, there are pay inequities between men and women. A number of prominent actresses have begun to speak up about pay discrimination in Hollywood and what it might take to close the gap. Jennifer Aniston, famous for her role in Friends and most recently in the film Cake, revealed her own battles with Hollywood sexism: "We're very much a sexist society. Women are still not paid as much as men.

George Takei's Racist Rant: Clarence Thomas Is a 'Clown in Black

Clarence Thomas, sneering that the Supreme Court justice is a "clown in blackface." The Star Trek actor on Monday fumed, "[Thomas] is a clown in blackface sitting on the Supreme Court. He gets me that angry. He doesn't belong there." Talking to a local Fox affiliate in Phoenix, Takei snarled that the second African American on the Supreme Court is unqualified: "This man does not belong on the Supreme Court. He is an embarrassment. He is a disgrace to America."

Why Gay Movie Stars Are Staying Locked In The Closet

There’s a vast and growing list of prominent gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender media and entertainment figures — just don’t count movie stars among them.

Celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres, Caitlyn Jenner and Neil Patrick Harris have kicked open the closet door with little to no damage to their careers. In some cases, they’ve found themselves more in demand after revealing their sexual preferences or gender identification.

Yet there’s one glass ceiling that remains stubbornly resistant to cracks.

No A-list film actor has yet to come out publicly while at the pinnacle of his or her career. Sure, Jodie Foster gave an elliptical Golden Globes speech about being a lesbian, and out actors Ian McKellen and Zachary Quinto helped anchor the “X-Men” and “Lord of the Rings” series, and the rebooted “Star Trek” films, respectively. Yet despite their prodigious talents, none of them has the power to secure a greenlight on their name alone.

In some cases, business concerns, not personal comfort, lead to silence.

Academy Invites Record 322 New Members in Push for More Oscar Diversity

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences continues to push for diversity, sending membership invitations to 322 individuals, including a healthy number of people who can help change the org’s demos.

Among the invitees are David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Felicity Jones, Emma Stone, Rosamund Pike, Bong Joon-ho, Justin Lin and Francois Ozon. The Academy has been reaching out to women, foreign-born artists and people of various races, ethnic backgrounds and ages.

Accusations of Academy bigotry surfaced yet again in January when the list of Oscar nominees included Caucasians in all 20 acting categories, and few women or racial minorities among the other categories. Director Ava DuVernay and actor David Oyelowo of “Selma” had seemed like strong contenders, giving many people hopes of breakthroughs. After initial anger at the Acad, activists began to shift their protests to industry hiring practices. For example, 323 films were eligible for 2014 awards — which means AMPAS should theoretically have been weighing at least 160 films directed by women, instead of a small handful.
