Suffolk University/USA TODAY Poll Shows Trump On Top With GOP Voters Nationwide

Republican businessman Donald Trump is on a roll with likely GOP presidential primary voters, according to a Suffolk University/USA TODAY national poll.

Among voters who identify either as Republicans or independents and who plan to vote in their states’ Republican primaries or caucuses, 17 percent named Trump as their first choice for the GOP nomination in the 2016 presidential race.

Trump was followed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (14 percent), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (8 percent), Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (6 percent), Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (5 percent), retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson (4 percent), Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (4 percent), former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (4 percent) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (3 percent). Receiving less than 2 percent each were former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, businesswoman Carly Fiorina, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, and former New York Gov. George Pataki.

FLASHBACK: USA Today Falsely Reported 'An Epidemic Of Church Burning'

“Information or allegations reflecting negatively on individuals or groups seen less sympathetically by the intelligentsia pass rapidly into the public domain with little scrutiny and much publicity. Two of the biggest proven hoaxes of our time have involved allegations of white men gang-raping a black woman-- first the Tawana Brawley hoax of 1987 and later the false rape charges against three Duke University students in 2006. In both cases, editorial indignation rang out across the land, without a speck of evidence to substantiate either of these charges. Moreover, the denunciations were not limited to the particular men accused, but were often extended to society at large, of whom these men were deemed to be symptoms or 'the tip of the iceberg.' In both cases, the charges fit a pre-existing vision, and that apparently made mundane facts unnecessary.

Another widely publicized hoax-- one to which the President of the United States added his sub-hoax-- was a 1996 story appearing in USA Today under the headline, 'Arson at Black Churches Echoes Bigotry of the Past.' There was, according to USA Today, 'an epidemic of church burning,' targeting black churches. Like the gang-rape hoaxes, this story spread rapidly through the media. The Chicago Tribune referred to 'an epidemic of criminal and cowardly arson' leaving black churches in ruins.

As with the gang-rape hoaxes, comments on the church fire stories went beyond those who were supposed to have set these fires to blame forces at work in society at large. Jesse Jackson was quoted was quoted in the New York Times as calling these arsons part of a 'cultural conspiracy' against blacks, which 'reflected the heightened racial tensions in the south that have been exacerbated by the assault on affirmative action and the populist oratory of Republican politicians like Pat Buchanan.' Time magazine writer Jack White likewise blamed 'the coded phrases' of Republican leaders for 'encouraging the arsonists.' Columnist Barbara Reynolds of USA Today said that the fires were 'an attempt to murder the spirit of black America.' New York Times columnist Bob Herbert said, "The fuel for these fires can be traced to a carefully crafted environment of bigotry and hatred that was developed over the last century.'

Texas Woman Discovers She's White After 70 Years

 CONVERSE, Texas — A well-kept family secret about racial identity has given a Texas woman a unique perspective on the uproar surrounding Rachel Dolezal.

The mere mention of Dolezal's name sets Verda Byrd off like a stick of dynamite.

"She lied about her race," Byrd said. "I didn't lie because I didn't know."

Dolezal's publicized choice to identify herself as black has been under scrutiny. The former NAACP president in Spokane, Wash., is accused of deceiving the public by insisting she was not only of black descent but black herself.

Byrd considers herself African American.

"I'm comfortable with being a black woman," she said.

Her preference in race comes through an incredible set of circumstances. Byrd was born to Earl and Daisy Beagle in September 1942. Her biological parents, whom she describes as white transients, named her Jeanette.

Her father walked out on his family leaving her mother with 10 children to care for. After Daisy Beagle fell 30 feet to the ground in a trolley accident, the state of Missouri took her children away from her because she could not care for them.

Affidavits Spell Out Chilling Case Against Dylann Roof

CHARLESTON — As a subdued Dylann Roof made his first official appearance Friday on charges of killing nine people at a historic black church, police affidavits offered grim details of the murder case, including an allegation that the gunman fired multiple shots into each victim and stood over them to issue "a racially inflammatory statement."

The documents also said that Roof's father and uncle contacted police to positively identify the 21-year-old as the suspect after authorities issued photos of the gunman within hours of the attack at the Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston Wednesday evening.

As those details trickled out, the suspect's family issued a statement expressing sadness and offering condolences to the families of the victims:

Dylann Roof's father, according to the court documents, told investigators that his son owned a .45-caliber handgun. The documents note that .45-caliber casings were found at the scene of the shootings.

Obama's Penchant For Desert Golf Faces Scrutiny In Drought

PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. —One question for President Obama as he heads for Palm Springs, Calif. this weekend: whether it's appropriate to play on plush green golf links in the desert amid a severe drought.

"This administration's commitment to helping those affected by the drought is second to none," said White House deputy press secretary Eric Schultz Thursday in answer to a reporter's question on that topic before the president headed to the West Coast.

"I know that many courses have taken water mitigation steps aimed at water conservation," Schultz said.

That's true. Golf course managers convened a task force in 2013 to focus on reducing the water footprint of their properties. Since then, more owners have replaced some acres of grass with desert landscaping, and it's possible that more still will follow to cut back on watering during the drought.

Arizona Sheriff Sending Armed Posse Into Black Churches

PHOENIX — A sheriff on trial, accused of harassing some members of a minority community, will send armed volunteer posse members into 60 black churches Sunday in response to the racially motivated attack in South Carolina earlier this week.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who already is under federal supervision because of a ruling two years ago that his office racially profiled Hispanics in its traffic and immigration patrols, is scheduled to go to trial in August in a separate lawsuit alleging additional discrimination against Latinos.

He said the Rev. Jarrett Maupin, who describes himself as a Progressive Baptist preacher and civil-rights campaigner on his Facebook page, asked him to provide the protection because he was worried about problems with white supremacists in the area.

"I am the elected sheriff of this county. He asked me to help, and I'm going to help," Arpaio said Friday.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Amid unanswered questions about her ethnic identity and continued leadership, local NAACP acting president Rachel Dolezal on Sundaycanceled a Monday meeting of the chapter.

"Due to the need to continue discussion with regional and national NAACP leaders, tomorrow's meeting is postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date," Dolezal said in an announcement emailed to media on Sunday.

Dolezal, who is also chairwoman of a police oversight committee, said Friday that she and her executive board would be making a statement at the Monday meeting about claims she misled people about her race.

The announcement was also e-mailed to NAACP members. In the email chain Sunday, Executive Committee Chair Lawrence Burnley wrote:

"I'm puzzled by your decision to arbitrarily cancel/postpone the meeting without input from the executive committee which is scheduled to meet today. The Association's by-laws provides specific guidelines concerning monthly general/branch meetings.

WASHINGTON — The future of same-sex marriage and President Obama's health care law hang in the balance as the Supreme Court's 2014 term draws rapidly to a close this month. But those aren't the only big issues on the justices' plate.

Free speech and fair elections. Religious liberty and racial discrimination. Clean air and capital punishment. All await rulings over the next three weeks as the court completes action on 20 cases remaining this term. The next decisions will come Thursday morning.

Here's a look at the Elite Eight:

• Same-sex marriage. In a decision likely to come on the term's last day — possibly June 29 or 30 — the court will decide whether gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry or whether state bans against same-sex marriage can remain in place.

Six cases from Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee and Kentucky have been consolidated for the court's consideration. In them, 32 total plaintiffs are asking for the right to marry or to have marriages licensed elsewhere recognized in their home states. Most legal experts predict the court, led by Justice Anthony Kennedy, will rule in favor of the gay and lesbian couples.

Michael Sam has left the Montreal Alouettes' training camp and returned home for personal reasons, the team said Friday.

"With all due respect for Michael Sam, the nature of this decision will remain confidential," the Alouettes said in a statement, which said Sam had returned home.

"The Montreal Alouettes fully respect Michael Sam's decision and rally around him to offer him all time and support needed. The team has left the door open and Michael is welcome to come back whenever he feels ready."

Sam, 25, signed a one-year, $100,000 contract with the Canadian Football Leagueteam last month that included a $150,000 option for 2016.

Racetrack Grandstand Imploded To Make Way For NFL's Possible Return To Los Angeles

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — It stood for almost 75 years. It fell in less than 20 seconds.

The city of Inglewood took another step in clearing the way for the NFL’s possible return to Southern California when on Sunday morning it demolished the grandstand of the now-closed Hollywood Park racetrack.

The site is to be used for the construction of a proposed 80,000-seat stadium that would serve as home to an NFL team — something this region hasn’t had in two decades.

Stan Kroenke, owner of the St. Louis Rams, is a partner in the stadium project, and about 75 Rams fans gathered before the 6 a.m. demolition. They let out a cheer after low-level explosives brought down the concrete grandstand that held as many as 65,000 people when Seattle Slew once raced at the track.

The United States tried but failed to sabotage North Korea's nuclear weapons program with a computer virus in 2010, Reuters reported Friday.

The cyber attack came at the same time the Stuxnet virus was disrupting Iran's uranium-enrichment efforts, according to sources familiar with the stealth effort. Stuxnet was reportedly created by the United States and Israel.

The North Korea attack involved a Stuxnet variant that was designed to activate "when it encountered Korean-language settings on an infected machine," Reuters writes. But U.S. agents were never able to install the malware on the computers controlling Pyongyang's nuclear program.

Unlike Iran, which is widely connected to the Internet, North Korea remains extremely isolated from global communications. The country's only Net connection runs through China, which heavily monitors and filters traffic. Few North Koreans own a computer, which requires police approval.

Flavor Flav Arrested In Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Flavor Flav was arrested in Las Vegas early Thursday on allegations of driving under the influence, speeding, possessing less than an ounce of marijuana and having an open container of alcohol in the 2005 black BMW he was driving, authorities said.

Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Loy Hixson said the 56-year-old entertainer was pulled over around 12:30 a.m. for going 73 mph in a 45 mph zone as he enteredInterstate 15 southwest of McCarran International Airport.

Flavor Flav also had a suspended driver's license and registration, Hixson said. He was arrested on six charges, all misdemeanors. Online jail records indicated that he posted bail.

Flavor Flav's legal name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr.

His Las Vegas attorney, Kristina Wildeveld, said she had no comment to offer regarding her client's Las Vegas arrest, but she said he's working to resolve an ongoing case in New York that also involves driving-related charges.

When Stephanopoulos invited me on his Sunday program, I knew that he had worked as a top adviser and campaign manager to President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, but I didn't know about his donations or his other ties to the foundation founded and overseen by the former president and his wife, potential future president Hillary Clinton.

Tom Brady signaled in his appeal of his "Deflategate" suspension that he will put NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's credibility on trial, further inflating the stakes in what started as a silly little scandal about the air pressure in footballs.

The expected federal court case — and, to borrow a phrase, it's more probable than not that's just where it's headed — could define or limit the powers of the commissioner long after the Super Bowl MVP returns to the field.

"I think this is much bigger than a four-game suspension for Tom Brady," said Gabe Feldman, a Tulane Law School professor and the director of the Sports Law Program there. "This is part of that continuing battle for the role of the commissioner in disciplinary matters.

"This is a decades-old principal, that the office of the commissioner was created in part to protect the game and to determine what's in the best interest of the league. This is why (the league) bargained for this back in 2011 — that the commissioner is in the best position to determine that."

WASHINGTON — The final congressional report on the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attacks may present conflicting information on some issues without concluding which version is true, according to Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy, chairman of the special House committee investigating the attacks.

Democrats on Gowdy's committee, who have already declared the investigation a waste of taxpayer money, were further irritated by the possibility that the much-touted House investigation will leave some facts open to interpretation.

Gowdy, R-S.C., said in a recent interview the investigation is a fact-finding mission, but every factual dispute may not be settled.

Lili Bernard, a former actress who is listed as having appeared on The Cosby Show, has reportedly stepped forward as a new accuser with rape claims leveled against Bill Cosby.

Bernard was mentored by the comedian, USA Today reported, and made an appearance on the show in 1992 as Mrs. Minifield in the episode "Bring Me the Lip Gloss of Deirdre Arpelle." The former actress is one of two women that made public claims at a New York press conference on Friday (May 1) alleging that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them in the 1990s.

According to the newspaper's report, another accuser, Sammie Mays, also appeared at the press conference and said she met Cosby in the late 1980s while covering a convention in New Orleans. She claims she was sexually assaulted during an interview in his hotel room after he gave her a drink and she lost consciousness, USA Today reported.

The NFL Draft is just five days away, and Floyd Mayweather will meet Manny Pacquiao in the richest fight in boxing history next Saturday. ESPN’s Keith Olbermann argued on his show that fans can take a stand against domestic violence by boycotting both events.

“The choices are about where we as sports fans, where we as human beings, draw the line about domestic violence in this country. Jameis Winston is still likely to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Jameis Winston, with an overall public conduct record that makes Johnny Manziel look like a hall monitor, and fresh from making a public excuse for walking out of a supermarket with three pounds of crab legs that is so completely nonsensical that it sounds like it was dreamt up by the crab legs.

The juries have already ruled on Floyd Mayweather, five times. In a report this afternoon on Outside the Lines John Barr told of Floyd Mayweather’s record of criminal violence against women, which cascades down upon you like an avalanche…. You will support this excuse for a man? You will help him continue to behave as if his conduct is acceptable in the 21st century, or the 20th, or the 19th? I won’t. I regret this deeply. I met Manny Pacquiao last year, and a quieter, more respectful, more dignified boxer I’ve never encountered. May he make millions more, but I will not give Floyd Mayweather a dime.”
