Both al Qaeda and an emerging Islamic State are making gains simultaneously in Afghanistan, providing the biggest test to date for an Afghan National Security Force handed the operational lead by the U.S.

The Institute for the Study of War in Washington reported on Tuesday that Taliban militants now control Kunduz province. They are members of the Islamic Jihad Union, which supports Taliban leader Mullah Mansour and al Qaeda.

ISIS’ Worst Nightmare Just Got In The War

By Ivan Plis, July 24, 2015 Daily Caller

Turkish planes bombed Islamic State targets for the first time Friday, representing the country’s first armed foray into the conflict against the group.

The airstrikes, which reportedly destroyed three terrorist sites in Syria, represent a serious change in the country’s approach to ISIS. Just months ago, Turkey was attracting criticism for its lax enforcement of the 500-mile border it shares with Syria, which countless jihadi groups use for smuggling fighters to the front lines of battle.

Islamic State Threat: Isis Plotting To Use Drones To Bomb Crowds At Major British Events

By Kerry Picket, July 23, 2015 Express

ISLAMIC STATE (Isis) are plotting to use toy drones to bomb major events like football matches and music festivals in Britain, it emerged today.

Terrorists want to use the unmanned machines - available for as little as £100 on the high street - to drop explosives on large crowds at popular sporting and cultural gatherings.

Defence chiefs fear they could launch a multi-drone attack carrying several bombs, even using airborne cameras to film the bloody carnage below for twisted propaganda videos.

Pro-ISIS Airline Pilots Tracked By Law Enforcement In Southeast Asia

By Jana Winter July 8, 2015, First Look

Prior to September 2014, the Facebook profile for Ridwan Agustin appeared to be that of any proud pilot and aviation enthusiast: He posted pictures of himself in front his plane, by the engine, on the tarmac, with his crew, inside the cockpit and in various stages of flight. Sometimes he is accompanied in the photos by his wife, a flight attendant, and their children.

Along the way, between jaunts around East Asia, he documented his training and career, which included a trip to the Airbus office in Toulouse, France, with his AirAsia team in 2009; graduation from AirAsia Academy in January 2010; and then his life as pilot for AirAsia, where he flew international flights to Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as domestic routes.

Then in September 2014, something changed. Interspersed with photos of pristine white sand beaches, motorcycle rides and goofy tarmac photos with his colleagues came postings in support of the Islamic State. He began friending and interacting online with other pro-ISIS profiles — including Indonesian foreign fighters documenting their battles in Syria or Iraq. Agustin changed his profile name to Ridwan Ahmad Indonesiy and expressed interest in joining the fight in Kobani.

While Agustin was indicating an interest in joining ISIS in Syria, he was interacting with another Indonesian pilot for a different airline who also increasingly began posting in support of the Islamic State.

ISIS Advances Into Iraq's Ramadi Amid Wave Of Suicide Attacks

By Sameer N. Yacoub, May 16, 2015, Huffington Post

BAGHDAD, May 15 (Reuters) - Islamic State militants raised their black flag over the local government headquarters in the Iraqi city of Ramadi on Friday and claimed victory through mosque loudspeakers after overrunning most of the western provincial capital.

If Ramadi were to fall it would be the first major city seized by the insurgents in Iraq since security forces and paramilitary groups began pushing them back last year.

The insurgents attacked Ramadi overnight using six suicide car bombs to reach the city center, where the Anbar provincial government compound is located, police sources said.

Fighting continued in one district of Ramadi, 100 km (60 miles) west of Baghdad, and government forces were still in control of a military command center to the west of the city.

"The situation in Ramadi is dire, but the city has not fallen and the battle against criminal Daesh is still ongoing," Anbar governor Sohaib al-Rawi said on Twitter, using an Arabic name for Islamic State.

Ramadi has been fought over for months, but the insurgents renewed their offensive there in April, crushing government forces' efforts to retake Anbar, Iraq's largest province, and move north to the Islamic State stronghold of Mosul.

ICYMI: PolitiFact: Matthews: Cheney's post-Saddam Tactic Created ISIS

By Jon Geenberg, Sept. 15, 2015, PolitiFact

Even as President Barack Obama rallies support to attack the forces of the Islamic State, the military group also known as ISIS and ISIL, he is taking barbs from both the hawks and the doves. The former, like Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain, back military engagement but skewer the president for having failed to act earlier. The doves doubt that a military response will do more than breed new enemies of the United States.

This pincer movement galls Obama’s fans who feel he is unfairly blamed for a disaster he inherited.

In the closing seconds of MSNBC’s coverage special immediately after the president’s address on ISIS on Sept. 10, Hardball host Chris Matthews leveled this dig at a major backer of the original invasion of Iraq, former Vice President Dick Cheney.

"Do not listen to Dick Cheney," Matthews said. "He's the one that created al-Qaida by taking over the holy land in Saudi Arabia. He’s the one that de-Ba’athisized the Iraqi government and created ISIS."

Fate Of Japanese Hostages Unknown As ISIS Deadline Apparently Passes

Saeed Ahmed, Jan. 24, 2015, CNN

ISIS claims the ransom amount is the same as the financial aid pledged by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to countries affected by the militant group.

Japanese officials have repeatedly stressed that their military, which is constitutionally forbidden from taking action other than for self-defense, isn't involved in the international airstrikes against ISIS positions in Syria and Iraq.

Iran And Hezbollah Are Planning 'Imminent' Joint Invasion Of Israel's Northern Galilee

Chris Pleasance, Jan. 20, 2015, Daily Mail

Senior Iranian politicians are said to be incensed at the death of Allahdadi, which they confirmed yesterday, saying he had been 'martyred' in the name of his country.

Officials also denied that he had been planning any kind of attack, instead saying he had been in Syria to advise the government on how to tackle extremists such as Islamic State, who control much of the country's north.

Ben Carson Reacts To ISIS Comment

David Lightman, Jan. 19, 2015, McClatchy

Ben Carson stirred controversy last week when he suggested Americans could learn something from the Islamic State terrorist organization. “They’re willing to die for what they believe, while we are busily giving away every belief and every value for the sake of political correctness,” he told a Republican meeting.

ISIS Threatens To Kill 2 Japanese Hostages, Asks For $200M

Jason Molinet and Corky Siemaszko, Jan. 20, 2015, New York Daily News

“You have proudly donated $100 million to kill our women and children, to destroy the homes of the Muslims," the militant says, emphasizing his points with the wave of a knife. “So the life of this Japanese citizen will cost you $100 million."

That was a reference to the $200 million in non-military aid that Japan had just pledged to several countries fighting ISIS.

Attacks Challenge 'Lone Wolf' Terrorist Theory

Michel Moutot, Jan. 18, 2015, AFP

Although they may have acted without direct instructions from above, the Kouachi brothers had training from Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), its Yemen branch, and struck a top target on Al-Qaeda's "most-wanted" list.

The concept of "lone wolves" emerged at a time when Western observers were still struggling to understand the apparently diffuse threat from global jihadists -- that operated with less clear-cut structures than the major terrorist organisations of the 20th century.

Iran General Killed With Hezbollah Fighters In Israel Raid

Sara Hussein and Serene Assir, Jan. 19, 2015, AFP

The attack on Sunday near Quneitra on the Syrian-controlled side of the Golan Heights enraged Hezbollah's supporters, but analysts said the group would avoid a major escalation with Israel.

Once solely focused on fighting Israel, Hezbollah is now deeply involved in the war in neighbouring Syria, where it backs President Bashar al-Assad.

Jim Hoft, Jan. 16, 2015, Gateway Pundit

After ISIS Twitter threat, Military Families Rethink Online Lives

Ashley Fantz, Jan. 15, 2015, CNN

In late November, the FBI issued a warning to U.S. military members that ISIS was calling for attacks against them, a law enforcement source told CNN. The source said that "overseas based individuals are looking for like-minded individuals in the U.S. to carry out these attacks."

The warning asked members of the military to "review their online social media presence for any information that might attract the attention of violent extremists."

Britain's MI5 Chief Warns Al Qaeda In Syria Planning Mass Attacks On West

Guy Faulconbridge, Jan. 8, 2015, Reuters

Parker said around 600 British extremists had traveled to Syria, many joining the militant group which calls itself "Islamic State" and has taken control of swathes of Iraq and Syria.

Islamic State militants in Syria were plotting attacks on Britain and making sophisticated use of social media to incite British nationals to carry out violence, Parker said.

ISIS Alive And Well--Faces No Threat To Their Existence

Jonathan Spyer, Sep. 4, 2014, Jerusalem Post

This week, the siege on the city of Amerli was lifted by Iraqi and Shi’ite militia forces, paving the way for the reconquest of Salahuddin province. The advance was preceded by US air strikes on Islamic State positions in the town.

The Peshmerga has also had a good few days. The strategic Mosul dam was recaptured in late August, in a joint operation with Iraqi forces; this week, the town of Zumar was retaken.

The U.S. And Iran Are Aligned In Iraq Against The Islamic State--For Now

Missy Ryan and Loveday Morris, Dec. 27, 2014, Washington Post

At the same time, Iraq’s Shiite-led government is increasingly reliant on the powerful militias and a massive Shiite volunteer force, which together may now equal the size of Iraq’s security forces.

Although the Obama administration says it is not coordinating directly with Iran, the two nations’ arms-length alliance against the Islamic State is an uncomfortable reality. That’s not only because some of the militia shock troops who have proved effective in fighting the Islamic State battled U.S. forces during the 2003-2011 war there, but also because, in Syria, Iran continues to support President Bashar al-Assad, whom the United States would like to see toppled.
