Greece Is On The Edge Of Catastrophe

The head of France's central bank has warned of the dire consequences facing Greece if it fails to strike a bailout deal this week, adding that he fears the country will descend into 'riots and chaos'.
Warning that the Greek economy 'is on the edge of catastrophe', Christian Noyer said he was concerned that major civil unrest could break out if a deal isn't struck by the weekend.

Speaking at the European Parliament today Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said he was confident of meeting an end-of-the-week deadline set by eurozone leaders to reach a bailout deal or risk leaving the euro.
Calling on all sides to work together, Tsipras said: 'This is a European problem which requires a European solution... let us not allow it to become a divided Europe,' he said. He added that Greece, which has imposed tough reforms in exchange for two EU-IMF bailouts since 2010, had been used as an 'austerity laboratory' by the rest of Europe.

Baltimore police took several people into custody just minutes after the 10pm curfew went into effect Saturday, including one man who was pepper-sprayed and dragged from the street before being detained.

The number of arrests made Saturday after the curfew is unknown, but NBC News reports that at least two men and three women were seen being put into a police van near a burned CVS pharmacy.

In an incident caught on video, one protester stood before officers wearing a t-shirt that read ‘F*** the police’ and refused to move before on policeman used his pepper spray.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake offered up regrets on “Meet The Press” Sunday for saying space was given to protesters in Baltimore who “wished to destroy.”



Rawlings-Blake told host Chuck Todd that she “certainly used the wrong phrase,” of which she received roundabout criticism as the riots escalated Monday.

“Do you regret using the phrase ‘space to destroy?'” host Chuck Todd asked.

(CNN) Ben Carson sounds skeptical that the recent death of a Baltimore man in police custody was a mistake.

The type of severe spinal injury suffered by Freddie Gray "requires a great deal of direct pressure to that area," meaning, "there is a high likelihood that direct trauma occurred," the presidential prospect wrote on Facebook Friday. "It would be almost impossible to acquire such an injury by simply rolling around in a van, regardless of how violently," he wrote Friday on Facebook. "Let us hope that whoever inflicted said trauma did not intend to yield such an outcome."

Carson's comments resonate uniquely among those who are seeking or are likely to seek the White House in 2016. He -- as was Gray -- is African-American. Carson is also a retired neurosurgeon and a former resident of Baltimore.

In a nearly empty, lavishly ornate Speaker’s Lobby adjacent to the House floor on Thursday evening, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., was locked in a long embrace with state colleague Rep. Chris Van Hollen, trading words of encouragement and back-pats.

It had been a long, emotionally draining week — and the two Maryland lawmakers had a brief moment alone together between House votes to express support for one another.

The moment was a short break from the chaos that has engulfed the city that Cummings represents, Baltimore, where the 64-year-old representative spent much of this week, on the streets, meeting with young people, urging peace among the protests. The demonstrations there in response to the death in police custody of 25-year-old Freddie Gray have lasted for more than a week.

The San Francisco-area protests have included some looting, rock throwing and property damage. Scores of protesters have been arrested.

Riots are a necessary part of the evolution of society. Unfortunately, we do not live in a universal utopia where people have the basic human rights they deserve simply for existing, and until we get there, the legitimate frustration, sorrow and pain of the marginalized voices will boil over, spilling out into our streets. As “normal” citizens watch the events of Ferguson unfurl on their television screens and Twitter feeds, there is a lot of head shaking, finger pointing, and privileged explanation going on. We wish to seclude the incident and the people involved. To separate it from our history as a nation, to dehumanize the change agents because of their bad and sometimes violent decisions—because if we can separate the underlying racial tensions that clearly exist in our country from the looting and rioting of select individuals, we can continue to ignore the problem.

Gun Sales Up As Ferguson Braces For Unrest

Lately, Dan McMullen has been bringing an extra gun to his office in Ferguson, Missouri.

McMullen runs Solo Insurance on West Florissant close to where looting and vandalism briefly broke out in early August after a police officer shot to death teenager Michael Brown.

"I bring an extra gun now only because it has a bigger magazine," McMullen says. He began carrying it after tensions increased in the area following the shooting. He says he would never use it to protect his business, but he would use it to save his life.

Scores of SWAT officers swarmed Ferguson, Missouri, where unrest has broken out this week in the wake of a teenager's death.

Michael Brown, a black teenager, was unarmed when he was shot and killed by a police officer. The DOJ announced that it would look into allegations of racism and police brutality. The police officer's identity has not been released.

HuffPost's Ryan Reilly reported that a SWAT team of at least 70 people showed up the apparently peaceful demonstration. According to Reilly, cops told protesters to leave the area.

"This is not open for discussion," one officer said.

Police tactics during the unrest following the shooting have been criticized as over-aggressive. Earlier this week, cops used rubber bullets and tear gas against demonstrators, some of whom have been accused of looting.

FERGUSON, Mo., — The Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Monday that it had opened an inquiry into the weekend shooting death of an unarmed black teenager by a police officer that sparked a night of looting and vandalism in this suburb of St. Louis.

Special Agent Cheryl Mimura, of the F.B.I.'s office in St. Louis, said that the agency had begun an investigation into possible civil rights violations connected to the death of Michael Brown, 18, who had been planning to begin college classes on Monday.

The circumstances of Mr. Brown’s death remained in sharp dispute two days after he was killed by a police officer in Ferguson, a city of about 21,000 northwest of St. Louis. The police have said an officer, who has not been identified, was “physically assaulted” before opening fire early Saturday afternoon. The authorities also said there had been a struggle “over the officer’s weapon.”

But critics have questioned the police’s account and demanded that the officer face prosecution.

The number of cars torched in France was a bit down this year. Color me cynical, but I suspect that there were fewer cars, not less rage. Considering the tens of thousands of cars Muslims already set alight in France, I am sure that was the case

Not that the perpetrators of all these car burnings are al-Qaeda. But over the years they have overwhelmingly been what the French press euphemistically calls “youths”: i.e., young Muslims.

And Manuel Valls is so blinkered as to be pleased that they torched fewer cars this year than they did last year.

Good news from Le Figaro:

Manuel Valls has announced that only 1,067 cars were burned on New Year’s Eve, a 10.6% reduction over last year. The figures cover the period from 6:00 p.m. December 31 to 6:00 a.m. January 1.

The minister spoke of “positive results” for the overnight period. “We must feel encouraged by these results.”

In addition, there were 322 persons arrested, with 217 held in custody. And five policemen and gendarmes were wounded….

CLICHY-SOUS-BOIS, France — Marauding youths torched hundreds of vehicles overnight and on Saturday in renewed violence coinciding with the first anniversary of riots that exposed a deep schism between poor North African immigrants and mainstream France.

A group of teenagers set one bus on fire Saturday in the southern French port city of Marseille, seriously wounding a passenger. Three others suffered from smoke inhalation, police said. Two other public buses and 277 vehicles around the country were burned overnight, police said.

Six police were injured and 47 people were arrested, ministry officials said. Still the Interior Ministry described the night as “relative calm,” noting that up to 100 cars are torched by youths in troubled neighborhoods on an average night.

Police had braced for a bigger replay of violence in the poor suburbs predominantly made up of Muslims from former French colonies in Africa. Friday marked the one-year anniversary of the deaths of two teens that ignited three weeks of riots in 2005.

The rioting was fueled by anger at France’s failure to offer equal opportunities to many minorities — especially Arabs and blacks — and France’s 5 million-strong Muslim population.

France’s trouble integrating minorities and the suburban unrest are becoming hot political issues in the campaign for next year’s presidential and parliamentary elections. The government passed an equal opportunities law this spring and has poured funds into “sensitive” areas, but disenchantment is still pervasive.
