Republicans in Congress have certainly made a lot of hay out of Facebook's handling of the Diamond and Silk situation and I got curious after I tweeted out asking if anyone had seen the actual correspondence between them and Facebook. Few had. Now that I have, I think Facebook made some mistakes, but that it was not intentional, not malicious, and not nearly as bad as it seemed.

The lawsuit, first reported by Fox News, was filed Monday in federal court in the eastern district of Michigan on behalf of the families of Tevin Crosby, Javier Jorge-Reyes and Juan Ramon Guerrero.
The lawsuit is the latest to target popular Internet services for making it too easy for the Islamic State to spread its message. In June, the family of a California college student killed in last year's terrorist attacks in Paris sued Facebook, Google and Twitter. Keith Altman, the attorney representing the three families in the Orlando nightclub lawsuit, also represents the family of that student, Nohemi Gonzalez, in the Paris terrorist attacks lawsuit.

As Apple continues to fight back on the FBI's request, calling it "unconstitutional" in court, support from the tech world is starting to pour in. Soon after Microsoft announced it's decision to back Apple's legal battle with an amicus brief, the Wall Street Journal reports that Facebook, Google and possibly Twitter are among companies working with Microsoft on a joint motion. An Amazon spokesman told Reuters the company is working on its "amicus options," as it becomes clear Apple will have support from many of its competitors in this particular battle.

Facebook Petition Calls For National ‘Burn The Confederate Flag’ Day
CHARLESTON, S.C. (CBS Atlanta/AP) — A Facebook petition is calling for a National “Burn The Confederate Flag” Day.
More than 8,000 people have “liked” the petition as of Monday morning.
“The Confederate flag has flown in America for 150 years too long. The Civil War is long over. Fortunately, our First Amendment right gives us the power of free speech that will allow us to display our feeling by burning the flag of slavery from sea to shining sea. Join us for a PEACEFUL DAY OF PROTEST and burn the Confederate flag,” the petition reads.
It continues, “This is our day to demonstrate that it is no longer acceptable to fly this flag anywhere. Organize a Confederate flag burning event in your area on Saturday, June 27th, and flood social media with pictures and videos using the hashtags #FeelTheBurn and #TakeItDown.”
The Confederate flag has become a topic of debate once again after a white gunman opened fire during Bible study at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, last week, killing nine. Suspect Dylann Roof, 21, has been charged with nine counts of murder.

The principal of North Miami Senior High School has lost his job over his Facebook comment defending the Texas police officer caught on video pushing a teen girl to the ground in an incident at a community pool.
Alberto Iber's comment had defended the officer seen in a video pushing a 15-year-old girl to the ground and drawing his gun on other black teens following a pool party in McKinney, a Dallas suburb.
"He did nothing wrong. He was afraid for his life," Iber posted on a Miami Heraldstory. "I commend him for his actions."
"That's a bad thing for being a principal at North Miami Senior High School," said a student. "How can you defend a man who pulled a gun on teenagers?"

Facebook Accused Of Tracking All Users Even If They Delete Accounts, Ask Never To Be Followed
A new report claims that Facebook secretly installs tracking cookies on users’ computers, allowing them to follow users around the internet even after they’ve left the website, deleted their account and requested to be no longer followed.
Academic researchers said that the report showed that the company was breaking European law with its tracking policies. The law requires that users are told if their computers are receiving cookies except for specific circumstances.
Facebook’s tracking — which it does so that it can tailor advertising — involves putting cookies or small pieces of software on users’ computers, so that they can then be followed around the internet. Such technology is used by almost every website, but European law requires that users are told if they are being given cookies or being tracked. Companies don’t have to tell users if the cookies are required to connect to a service or if they are needed to give the user information that they have specifically requested.

LA Police Shooting: What We Know And Don't Know

Emotions were running hot across the country Monday after a viral Facebook video showed Los Angeles police shooting and killing a man in the city's Skid Row district, where homeless people camp in the city's downtown.
Because the man appears in the four-minute video to be on his back on the ground when shots are fired, some have blasted the police, saying excessive force was used. The police, who said they were answering a call about a robbery, have said they are investigating the incident. Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said Monday that the man reached for an officer's gun.
A witness told the Los Angeles Times the man reached for an officer's weapon.

5 Facts About Man Who Attacked New York Cops With A Hatchet
CNN reports that Zale Thompson was discharged from the Navy and that he had a criminal record in California. His Navy discharge was related to misconduct.
According to his Facebook page, Thompson is a native of Queens who graduated in 2011 from the Teachers College at Columbia University. His page also says he attended the The College of New Rochelle and High School of Graphic Communications Arts. His last-known address was in East New York, Brooklyn, but the New York Post reports that he had moved to Jamaica, Queens, this year. Neighbors called him “weird” and said he constantly fought with his girlfriend and mother while he lived in Brooklyn.
He is 32 years old. On his LinkedIn page, Thompson lists his skills as Microsoft Office, public speaking and research. A source told the New York Post that Thompson was “very educated” and was a proponent of “black power.”

Facebook Demands DEA Stop Using Fake Profile Pages For Investigations
Facebook has a message for the Drug Enforcement Administration: we don’t like what you’re doing on our website.
The social networking giant said in a letter Friday it wants assurances that the federal agency is no longer using fake profile pages to conduct investigations. The letter was in response to a New York woman's federal lawsuit that claims that a DEA agent created a fake Facebook profile using her name and photographs to lure criminals.
In the letter, Facebook's chief security officer Joe Sullivan told DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart that law enforcement agencies need to follow the same rules about being truthful on Facebook as civilian users, which include a ban on lying about who you are.
"Facebook has long made clear that law enforcement authorities are subject to these policies," Sullivan wrote. "We regard DEA's conduct to be a knowing and serious breach of Facebook's terms and policies."
Facebook wants the DEA to confirm that it has stopped using any other fake profile pages it may have created.
The Justice Department has opened a review of the case after New York resident Sondra Arquiett sued the DEA agent, Timothy Sinnigen, and the U.S. government for allegedly creating the Facebook page without her knowledge or permission.

During the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman saga, the press was widely and deservedly criticized for repeatedly and almost exclusively using a photo of Martin as an innocent-looking 13 year-old over others more recently taken which were readily available. Perhaps they're at it again with alleged murderer Alton Nolen. On Saturday morning, the Associated Press described Nolen as having "beheaded a woman with a knife and was attacking another worker when he was shot and wounded by a company official." Photos of Nolen from 2013, 2011 and 2010 have accompanied press reports, while the one which will be seen after the jump from Nolen's own Facebook page just three weeks ago has been absent (HT to an emailer):

The photo is one of two dated September 5 at 10:06pm. The description: "At The Masjid (Mosque)Today For Jumar 9/5/2014 & Peforming Wudu!!!" Wudu is "the Islamic procedure for washing parts of the body using water, typically in preparation for formal prayers."

Oklahoma Beheading: Warning Signs In Social Media Postings
On September 25, 2014, Alton Nolen, who recently converted to Islam, burst into a Moore, Oklahoma food distribution center and savagely beheaded his 54-year-old co-worker, Colleen Hufford. He proceeded to attack and stab another female 43-year-old, Traci Johnson. Before he could behead his second intended victim, Nolen was non-fatally shot by a CEO/off-duty reserve sheriff's deputy, Mark Vaughan.
Nolen had been in prison until March 2013, for possession of a controlled substance, escaping confinement and resisting an officer. It is unknown at this point whether the food processing plant was aware of Nolen’s criminal history at the time he was hired to work there. He was reportedly fired shortly before the gruesome attack, after arguing with his colleagues about whether it is acceptable to stone women to death. Before losing his job at Vaughan Foods in Moore, Oklahoma, Nolen had been actively trying to convert co-workers to Islam.

Actress Danièle Watts Wrongfully Detained--Mistaken For A Prostitute

Actress Danièle Watts was wrongfully detained under the suspicion that she was a prostituteafter being affectionate with her husband in Studio City, California.
Many will remember Danièle Watts from her role as "Coco" in Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained' or her current role as Martin Lawrence's daughter in 'Partners.'
Watts was dressed in a t-shirt, shorts, and tennis shoes when she was approached by police who believed her to be a prostitute. When she refused to show the ID, she then handcuffed by multiple officers and detained.
She told the entire story on her Facebook page:
Today I was handcuffed and detained by 2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place.
When the officer arrived, I was standing on the sidewalk by a tree. I was talking to my father on my cell phone. I knew that I had done nothing wrong, that I wasn’t harming anyone, so I walked away.
A few minutes later, I was still talking to my dad when 2 different policeofficers accosted me and forced me into handcuffs.
As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong. I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that “authority figures” could control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!!Read the full story: www.forharriet.com
