Former ‘Daily Show’ Writer Details His Rift With Jon Stewart

By Eric Levitz, July 24, 2015 MSNBC

For more than four years, Wyatt Cenac held one of the most coveted jobs in American comedy, serving as a writer and on-air contributor for “The Daily Show.” But in 2012, Cenac quit that job, even though he had no new gig lined up to replace it. On a recent episode of Marc Maron’s “WTF” poodcast, Cenac revealed that his departure was the product of an emotionally traumatizing fight he’d had with Jon Stewart, over whether or not one of the host’s jokes was racially insensitive.

In 2011, African-American pizza magnate Herman Cain was – briefly – a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. Among Cain’s signature policies was a proposal for all congressional bills to be limited to three pages. On “The Daily Show,” Stewart mocked the anti-intellectualism of Cain’s proposal by impersonating the candidate, saying in an approximation of Cain’s own loud, affectedly southern voice, “Bills will be three pages! If I am president, treaties will have to fit on the back of a cereal box!  From now on, the State of the Union address will be delivered in the form of a fortune cookie! I am Herman Cain, and I do not like to read.”

By THR Staff, Mar. 31, 2015

On Monday Trevor Noah was named Jon Stewart's replacement as host of The Daily Show. By Tuesday, the Internet had uncovered old tweets of his, which critics are labeling as anti-Semitic and sexist.

While Noah's past jokes invited backlash, there are people who jumped to his defense as well. The South African comedian alluded to the criticism in a tweet on Tuesday morning, which he quickly deleted. He wrote, "Twitter does not have enough characters to respond to all the characters on Twitter."

Here are some of Noah's tweets being revisited:

Jon Stewart On Eric Garner Case: "We're Not Living In A Post-Racial Society"

Aaron Couch, Dec. 3, 2014, Hollywood Reporter

He showed footage of Garner taken just before his death to illustrate that the idea of having police officers wear cameras might not do much good, since we had footage of the incident in this case, and no charges were brought.

"We are definitely not living in a post-racial society. And I bet there are a lot of people out there wondering how much of a society we are living in at all," Stewart said. "I don't know what to say. It just happened, so I have not had a chance to digest it."

By Jeffrey Meyer, Jul. 16, 2014, Newsusters.org

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sat down with Jon Stewart on his Daily Show program Tuesday night and was treated to a puff interview that included numerous questions about her potential 2016 presidential campaign.

The Comedy Central host practically begged his guest to announce her candidacy while promoting her book “Hard Choices.” Stewart insisted “I think I speak for everybody when I say, no one cares, they just want to know if you're running for president.”
