Trevor Noah Criticized As Anti-Semitic Due To Twitter History

By THR Staff, Mar. 31, 2015

On Monday Trevor Noah was named Jon Stewart's replacement as host of The Daily Show. By Tuesday, the Internet had uncovered old tweets of his, which critics are labeling as anti-Semitic and sexist.

While Noah's past jokes invited backlash, there are people who jumped to his defense as well. The South African comedian alluded to the criticism in a tweet on Tuesday morning, which he quickly deleted. He wrote, "Twitter does not have enough characters to respond to all the characters on Twitter."

Here are some of Noah's tweets being revisited:

Florida's "Dream Ticket"

Florida Republicans Pushing For A Bush-Rubio Ticket

By John King, Mar. 29, 2015, CNN.com

Washington (CNN)A Florida "dream ticket," two nuggets about leadership questions in Congress and coming tests for Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich filled our final March trip around the "Inside Politics" table.

1. Another "Draft Warren" movement?

If you follow politics, you have heard this one: Liberals say Elizabeth Warren has to run for president because Hillary Clinton is too cozy with Wall Street.

And now that Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is planning to retire -- creating an opening in the top Senate Democratic job -- you are about to hear this: Warren has to run for leader because Chuck Schumer is too cozy with Wall Street.

The senator from Massachusetts is likely to give the same answer as she did on a presidential run, but Jackie Kucinich of The Daily Beast says the liberal clamoring tells us something about anxiety on the left.

"What this does show is there is a lot of skepticism with the base with Chuck Schumer, because he's so close to Wall Street, and it's an issue they've really been hammering on," Kucinich said.

Assad 'Open' To Negotiations With US, Says ISIS Strengthening Despite Airstrikes

Screen grab via FoxNews.com
By Fox News, Mar. 30, 2015

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Sunday that he’s "open" to negotiations with the United States and that airstrikes conducted by a U.S.-led coalition in the region are not defeating the Islamic State terror group.

“We didn’t attack the American population. We didn’t support terrorists who did anything in the United States,” Assad told CBS’ "60 Minutes." "We always wanted to have good relation with the United States. We never thought in the other direction.”

Assad was reacting to comments made earlier this month by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in which Kerry said Washington was "working very hard with other interested parties to see if we can reignite a diplomatic outcome ... Because everyone agrees there is no military solution. There is only a political solution."

Assad has presided over Syria during a devastating civil war that has lasted for four years, claimed over 200,000 lives, and seen the rise of jihadist groups like Islamic State, or ISIS. The Obama administration has repeatedly insisted that any solution to the conflict would involve Assad's removal from power.

Ca Handgun Sales Skyrocket, Gun-Related Homicides Plummet

By Awr Hawkins, Mar. 4, 2015, Breitbart.com

Handgun sales in California broke a 21-year-old record in 2014, and at the same time, firearm-related murders fell to their lowest rate in over 20 years.

Moreover, accidental gun deaths decreased as well.

According to The Sacramento Bee, a record-breaking 510,000 handguns were sold in the state of California in 2014, easily breaking the previous record of 433,000 handguns sold in 1993. The rise in handgun sales reflects a national surge that was the result of “calls for more gun control in response to several mass shootings.”

The correlation between more guns and less crime was also seen nationally.

According to the FBI, violent crimes and property crimes fell in the first half of 2014 following a recording setting 21,093,273 background checks for firearm purchases in 2013.

On December 4, 2013, Breitbart News reported on a Congressional Research Service (CRS) study showing that an increasing rate of private gun ownership nationally, over a 15-year period, correlated with a sharply declining “firearm-related murder and non-negligent homicide” rate.

Hillary’s Emails: Deleted But Not Gone

By Joseph Marks and Rachel Bade, Mar. 30, 2015, Politico.com

As House Republican leaders weigh whether to try to force former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to hand over her personal email server, experts say the messages she deleted from it — or at least portions of them — can almost certainly be recovered.

Half a dozen computer forensics experts interviewed by POLITICO said remnants of Clinton’s emails likely still exist on the server, although retrieving them could be time intensive and expensive.

Clinton’s attorney David Kendall on Friday wrote Benghazi Committee Chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), declining the committee’s request for the server to be turned over to an independent third party. The committee said it wants a third party to verify that all Benghazi-related emails were in fact turned over to the panel—especially after Clinton acknowledged deleting anything determined to be “personal” messages.

Kendall called the request pointless, saying Clinton’s IT staff had confirmed to him the messages are gone for good.

MSNBC Host’s Rant on Sexism Against Hillary Conveniently Leaves Out 3 Other Female Names

By Victoria Taft, Mar. 30, 2015, IJReview.com

MSNBC host TourĂ© says Hillary Clinton is subjected to thinly veiled sexist coverage by reporters. He made the claim in a discussion on MSNBC’s “Up with Steve Kornacki” about the story of Clinton backers threatening reporters who use words they deem offensive.

  • Among the words the group wants banned are:
  • Ambitious
  • Calculating
  • Disingenuous
  • Entitled
  • Insincere
  • Out of Touch
  • Over Confident
  • Polarizing
  • Represent the Past
  • Secretive
  • Will Do Anything to Win
The word ‘shrill’ didn’t make the cut, but TourĂ© thinks it should have, according to Breitbart:
“[T]here is this sort of sexist, coded language that we’ve talked about. We had somebody on ‘the Cycle,’ I think when you were on, where somebody referred to Hillary as ‘shrill,’ right?
And we all understood that as one of these code words that people use against women that they’d never use against men…we do have to be careful about the way we talk about female politicians and not sort [use] those code words to say ‘hey, remember she’s a woman.’”

Mass Shooting In Panama City Beach

By BigNewsNetwork.com, Mar. 29, 2015

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Florida - Seven students in their early 20s, many of them on spring break, were shot in a Panama City Beach, Florida home in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen described the scene at the house on the town's main thoroughfare, Thomas Drive, as "complete chaos."

Three of the 7 people shot were inside the home, one was outside, one was in the middle of the road, and two were on the other side of the road. It is understood there was a party in the house and many people were dancing when a lone gunman began shooting.

"We have about 100 witnesses or so that we are trying to separate and interview," McKeithen told WMBB. "We have a mess."

Deputies from 5 nearby counties and officers from the Florida Highway Patrol and Panama City Beach police were also on the scene.

Three of the victims were from Alabama AM University who were visiting Panama City Beach for spring break, while another 3 were from Mobile, Alabama.

Virginia State Bar Cancels Israel Trip, Citing 'Discriminatory' Border Policies

By Donna St. George and Steve Hendrix, Mar. 29, 2015, WashingtonPost.com

The Virginia State Bar has canceled its midyear legal seminar in Jerusalem, citing “unacceptable discriminatory policies and practices pertaining to border security that affect travelers,” in a decision that provoked a swift reaction Sunday among some political leaders

The decision to cancel the trip followed an online petition launched by bar members who said exit and entrance policies in Israel would discriminate against Arab, Muslim and Palestinian members of Virginia’s legal community.

“It is unacceptable that the Virginia State Bar has decided to hold a conference in a location that actively discriminates on the basis of racial, religious, and national origin grounds, and effectively prevents Arab, Muslim and Palestinian members of the [Virginia State Bar] from attending,” the petition said.

Business Economists Boost 2015-2016 Outlook For US Economy, Cite Job Growth, Consumer Spending

By Associated Press, Mar. 30, 2015, FoxBusiness.com

A business economics group has boosted its outlook for U.S. economic improvement this year and next, particularly for job growth.

The March report from the National Association for Business Economics forecasts more hiring, a lower unemployment rate, a lower inflation rate and more growth in consumer spending in 2015, compared to the group's forecast December 2014.

The report, released early Monday, also predicts more investment by businesses in both equipment and intellectual property, as well as modest growth in stock prices.

"Healthier consumer spending, housing investment and government spending growth are expected to make outsized contributions to the projected acceleration in overall economic activity. Accordingly, recent labor market strength is expected to continue," John Silvia, the association's president and the chief economist at Wells Fargo, said in a statement.

Obama Cuts Federal Carbon Emissions

Mar. 29, 2015, HeraldOnline.com

President Barack Obama has signed another executive order mandating the reduction of carbon emissions. But critics of the president’s unilateral decisions on the environmental front will have a hard time finding a downside to this order.

The order, signed March 19, dictates that the federal government will cut its greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent over the next decade from 2008 levels and increase the share of renewable energy in the federal government’s electricity supply to 30 percent during the same period. Simultaneously, major firms that have contracts with the federal government, including Honeywell, IBM, General Electric and others, have pledged to reduce their own carbon footprint by 5 million metric tons compared to 2008 over the coming decade.

The White House asserts that it has the authority to issue executive orders such as this and to act without the express approval of Congress. But critics have challenged that contention.

'Spirit In The Sky' Singer Norman Greenbaum Hurt In Crash

Source:  Twitter
By Todd Leopold, Mar. 30, 2015, CNN.com

(CNN) Norman Greenbaum, best known for his much-played 1969 hit "Spirit in the Sky," was in critical condition after a crash that killed a motorcycle driver Saturday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol said.

Greenbaum, 72, was in the front passenger seat in a 2002 Subaru Outback when the driver, Bonita Kay Perea, made a left turn onto a road near Santa Rosa, California. The right side of the car was hit by a motorcycle that was "evidently unable to slow or stop in time to avoid a collision with the Subaru," the highway patrol said in its report.

The driver of the motorcycle, Ihab Usama Halaweh, was killed. His passenger, Nhmia Mekonnen Kahsay, was being treated for critical injuries, the CHP said.

Greenbaum was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. His injuries were also considered critical at the time of the highway patrol report.

Study: Los Angeles Fast-Food Ban Went Bust

By News.Heartland.org, Mar. 28, 2015

In 2008, the city of Los Angeles passed strict regulations on fast food restaurants in an effort to force citizens to adopt a better diet. But seven years later, the regulations have had no effect on either the diets or weight of area residents.

Utah State University economics professor William F. Shughart II says the Los Angeles fast-food ban is an example of ineffective legislation. Shughart is a policy advisor for the Heartland Institute, who publishes Budget & Tax News.

‘Legislating Morality Doesn’t Work’

“Once again we see that legislating morality doesn't work,” said William F. Shughart II, the J. Fish Smith Professor in Public Choice at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University. “These regulations are just an effort to regulate morality. But it turns out that people don't reduce their consumption of the foods that are targeted by these laws.”

Two More Women Accuse Bill Cosby Of Sexual Assaults, One Bearing 'Evidence'

By Annie D., Mar. 30, 2015, Au.Times.com

Women accusing Bill Cosby of sexual abuse are continuously coming out. Two more have come out to say they have been violated by the legendary comedian.

Page Six reports that two more women, Sunni Welles and Margie Shapiro have emerged to say they have been victimized by Cosby back in their teens, where they were drugged and then sexually assaulted. As of now, already three dozen women have accused the comedian for the same acts. Welles and Shapiro read their statements alongside celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred.

According to Welles, she was just 17-years old and aspiring to be a singer when she encountered Cosby. She said the encounter with Cosby took place back in the mid-1960s in Hollywood after she went to a jazz club. Welles said that she “buried” the incident in her memories until she saw so many “brave women” coming forward.

Shapiro on the other hand, said she was sexually assaulted by the comedian while she was just 19. She was working at a donut shop then in Santa Monica, California on Nov. 1975 when she got to know Cosby. She said Cosby took her to his place and there, the comedian gave her a box of matches with his name on it.

Here's The Starbucks Internal Memo Showing The 'Race Together' Campaign Was Always Doomed

Credit:  Reuters / David Ryder
By Hayley Peterson, Mar. 29, 2015, BusinessInsider.com

Starbucks' controversial campaign that encouraged baristas to talk about race relations with customers has been scaled back.

Baristas will no longer be required to write the slogan #racetogether on drink cups or try to engage customers on the topic of racism in the US.

The campaign suffered a public backlash from the start, with critics accusing the company of using racial tension to sell coffee. The vitriol was so strong that it caused a senior Starbucks executive to temporarily suspend his Twitter account.

But the criticism probably is not what killed the campaign. If anything, it was the logistics.

Here are the new responsibilities that Starbucks asked baristas to take on as part of the campaign, according to an internal memo obtained by Gawker.

Rough Day At An Eatery, Got An Apology

Philippe Chow Only Likes Black In Bean Sauce

By TMZ Staff, Mar. 28, 2015, TMZ.com

Reggae Artist Mavado claims he was treated like a bum and even verbally abused at a fancy Asian restaurant ... simply because he's black.

Sources close to Mavado tell TMZ ... he hit up Philippe Chow in NYC for lunch Thursday with his family, when he was curiously put in the back of the restaurant, even though it was pretty much empty.

Mavado didn't complain and the family got down to business, chowing down at Chow, when he walked over to another empty table and had someone in his family take a pic of him. He says that's when a manager said he couldn't sit at that table because they were expecting guests.

Mavado claims the manager added he was prohibited from using his phone in ANY manner.

He then claims he got the bum's rush ... all of the food came out at once. We gotta say, that's what Asian restaurants typically do, but that's his story. He says he felt like they wanted to get him out.

Most Voters Believe Concealed Carry Permits Are Necessary--Survey Says

By Halle Dean, Mar. 28, 2015, DailyTarHeel.com

Gun supporters and gun protesters alike have almost unanimously come together to draw the line on one aspect of the debate — that people need to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

With the help of Everytown for Gun Safety, a left-leaning advocacy movement, Strategies 360 recently released a report that found 88 percent of likely voters oppose concealed carry without a permit.

While usually polarized between the two sides, voters who support concealed carry — 57 percent — and voters who believe it should be illegal — 40 percent — agree there ought to be a permit system before buying a handgun.

“People feel as though they can still support Second Amendment rights, the right to own a gun and even the right to concealed carry,” said Kevin Ingham, vice president of Strategies 360. “They just draw a very clear line between letting anybody carry a concealed weapon legally and making sure that the people who are carrying a concealed weapon have shown that they are responsible gun owners.”

Boston Police: Injured Officer Remains In Critical Condition, WasShot 'Without Provocation'

Officer John Moynihan remains in critical condition.
By CBS Boston, Mar. 28, 2015

BOSTON (CBS) – Police Commissioner William Evans said Saturday Boston police officer John Moynihan remains in critical condition after he was shot “without provocation” on Friday night in Roxbury.

Evans said at a press conference from the Boston Police Department headquarters that officers approached 41-year-old Hyde Park resident Angelo West’s vehicle without guns drawn and the man opened fire.

According to police, West has a violent criminal history with several gun convictions.

On July 23, 2001, Boston police officer William Griffiths came upon an alleged drug deal involving West on Stuart Street. He and a State Police officer wrestled with West and were able to disarm him but not before he shot at several officers.

Black Women March To Senate Leader’s Office In Protest Over Loretta Lynch

Credit:  TheRoot.com / Lauren Victoria Burke
By Lauren Victoria Burke, Mar. 27, 2015, TheRoot.com

"We will not be moved, we will not go back, we will not stop," said Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner as she led a prayer outside the door of the U.S. Capitol office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as staff and U.S. Capitol police officers stirred nearby.

About 20 prominent black women arrived at the ornate office suites of McConnell Thursday morning, asking to meet with him—even if for only a few minutes in the hallway—over the delay in confirming Attorney General-designate Loretta Lynch. They were told McConnell was too busy. The women did meet with McConnell's chief of staff for about 20 minutes.

The group that arrived at his door included Williams-Skinner; attorney Barbara Arnwine, president of the Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights; Melanie Campbell, president of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation; Sheila Tyson, a city councilwoman from Birmingham, Ala.; and Marcia Dyson, CEO of the Women's Global Initiative.

Hillary Clinton Wiped Email Server 'Clean', Says Benghazi Committee Head

By Debbie M. Lord, Mar. 28, 2015, Al.com

The head of the House committee investigating the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, said Friday that Hillary Rodham Clinton wiped her email server "clean," permanently deleting all emails from it.

According to an Associated Press story, Rep. Trey Gowdy, (R-S.C.), said Clinton has not produced any new document and refused to give the server to an independent party for review.

Gowdy said he and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) will contemplate new legal actions against the former secretary of state, according to a story from Politico

"After seeking and receiving a two week extension from the Committee, Secretary Clinton failed to provide a single new document to the subpoena issued by the Committee and refused to provide her private server to the Inspector General for the State Department or any other independent arbiter for analysis," the Politico story quoted Gowdy as saying.

Thought the GOP House and Senate couldn't agree...

Republicans Pass Budgets In Both House And Senate, Trim $5.1 Trillion In Spending

By Ed Moressey, Mar. 27, 2015, HotAir.com

Remember when a disagreement between Republicans on the budget was “cataclysmic” for GOP claims to governance? Democrats last passed a normal budget resolution six years ago, but Republicans went all of seven days before both chambers finally passed budget resolutions. Our long national nightmare, at least as envisioned by Politico, is over:

The Senate passed a Republican-authored budget plan early on Friday that seeks $5.1 trillion in domestic spending cuts over 10 years while boosting military funding.

The 52-46 vote on the non-binding budget resolution put Congress on a path to complete its first full budget in six years. It came at the end of a marathon 18-hour session that saw approval of dozens of amendments ranging from Iran sanctions to carbon emissions and immigration policies.

The House passed its budget resolution on Wednesday after a similar process of debate and amendment. Some journalists might be unfamiliar with this process after six years of Democratic Party grandstanding under the cataclysmic leadership of Harry Reid, but this is called “regular order” budgeting. Reid’s decision to abandon that process was what led to several years of budgeting by brinksmanship, “fiscal cliffs,” debt-ceiling standoffs, and the like.

Oddly, Politico didn’t seem to recall those cataclysms at the beginning of a normal budget process. Hmmmm.
