CNN/NBC Reporters Wonder If Chattanooga Victims Hit By Friendly Fire

During a live press conference in the 12:00 p.m. ET hour on Wednesday about the Chattanooga shooting, CNN reporter Aaron Cooper asked FBI Special Agent in Charge Ed Reinhold: “There's been reports that there were some personal or privately owned weapons used in responding to the shooter....Did anybody hit anyone else? Was there any friendly fire incident?”

Reinhold explained that beyond the weapons used by shooter Mohammad Abdulazeez, “Two additional weapons were recovered at the scene. Those weapons belonged to service members and they were – at least one of the weapons was discharged at the subject.” Cooper pressed: “Were those officers authorized to have those weapons?” Reinhold replied: “As far as any authorization of weapons, it's not relevant to our current investigation.”

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Paula Proxmire was surrounded by screaming street preachers, angry protesters and unsettled mourners who had just arrived from Sunday church.

Her son, Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, 26, had died Saturday from wounds suffered in a shooting rampage here. The attacker was an aimless, depressed 24-year-old Muslim man whose online postings suggest he may have been motivated by radical Islamist movements.

Proxmire stood across from the bullet-riddled Armed Forces Recruiting Center, one of two military sites attacked by the gunman last week. She brushed back a strand of sweat-soaked hair and sobbed. Her son had been dead for barely one day. Around her people were screaming.

Immigration: Man Arrested In Connection With San Francisco Killing Had Been Deported Several Times

The man arrested in connection with the seemingly random killing of a woman who was out for a stroll with her father along the San Francisco waterfront is an illegal immigrant who previously had been deported five times, federal immigration officials say.

Further, Immigration and Customs Enforcement says San Francisco had him in their custody earlier this year but failed to notify ICE when he was released.

"DHS records indicate ICE lodged an immigration detainer on the subject at that time, requesting notification prior to his release so ICE officers could make arrangements to take custody. The detainer was not honored," ICE said in a statement Friday afternoon.

Nine People Shot At Mantua Barbecue

Nine people were shot, including a baby and two children, during a barbecue Saturday night in Philadelphia's Mantua section, police said.

The shotgun blasts left the three juveniles and three of the six male adult victims in stable condition at West Philadelphia hospitals late Saturday night, police said. Two other male victims arrived at Hahnemann University Hospital with minor wounds and were to be released, authorities. The condition of a last victim could not be immediately learned.

The shooting took place about 9:50 p.m. near 41st and Ogden Streets in the 16th District, authorities said.

Detectives said it appeared that the barbecue - involving as many as 50 people - had been fired upon by one shooter, who fired two buckshot blasts from a shotgun. He fired from the street, they said, but may have arrived or left in a car. "There were a lot of people out there," Lt. John Walker, of Southwest Detectives, said Saturday night, saying the toll could have been even higher.

Armed Robbery Suspect To Victim: ‘I Don’t Want To Shoot You, But I Need To Feed My Family’

ABSECON, NJ (CBS) – Police in Absecon are searching for a robbery suspect who targeted the Red Roof Inn.

Around 2:30 a.m., police responded to a 911 call about an armed robbery at the Inn located at 405 Absecon Boulevard.

According to the victim, who was a night clerk at the hotel, the suspect entered through the front doors of the establishment and approached the front desk while pointing a handgun at the victim.

The suspect then demanded money and reportedly said, “I don’t want to shoot you, but I need to feed my family.”

The victim opened the register and gave the suspect approximately $400 in cash.

The suspect then fled and left the scene in a vehicle traveling eastbound on Absecon Boulevard.

Ice Cream Truck Driver Brandon Brown Shot And Killed In Maryland As Children Watched

Police say an ice cream truck driver in Maryland was gunned down as he was selling treats to children and a suspect has been arrested.

Frederick police say 22-year-old Brandon Brown was fatally shot Saturday afternoon at Lucas Village, a subsidized housing complex.

Lt. Clark Pennington, a police spokesman, says Brown drove into the community playing music to announce his arrival.

He says children were lined up to buy ice cream when Brown stepped out of the truck and was approached by a man who shot him in the chest. Brown died at the scene.

Pennington says witnesses helped police identify a suspect, who was arrested Sunday.

Police identified the suspect as 27-year-old Larnell Lyles.

His phone number was unlisted, and online court records didn't list an attorney for him.

It’s sunny out. It’s warm. The ice cream man comes around, and this occurs,” Frederick police Lt. Clark Pennington told the Daily News.

Shots Fired At Cleveland Police In Foot Chase Of Suspect

Shots were fired Sunday at Cleveland police officers in a foot chase of a suspect near the site of a boy's fatal encounter with officers last year, police said.

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams told reporters Sunday afternoon that officers responded that morning to a report of six men waving guns and a man at the scene fled police when they tried to question him. The chief said the man pointed a gun at police and an officer fired four rounds without hitting the man, who continued running.

A number of unidentified people then began firing at officers from behind as police continued chasing the man, who was apprehended a few blocks away, Williams said.

No one was shot, but the man who fled was treated at a hospital for what appeared to be a small puncture wound to his stomach, Williams said.

"We believe that wound occurred while the suspect was jumping fences," Williams said.

The chase occurred not far from where 12-year-old Tamir Rice was fatally shot in November by an officer. That racially charged case sparked outrage around the country. The boy was black; the officer is white. A grand jury is to decide whether charges should be brought against the officer.

Suspects Open Fire On Officers Outside Dallas Police Hq

DALLAS (AP) — A man planted pipe bombs outside Dallas police headquarters and sprayed the building with bullets during a wild street battle early Saturday that authorities said miraculously left no one dead or injured except the suspect, who was later shot and killed in his van by a police sniper.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said the suspect identified himself to authorities as James Boulware, and he blamed police for having lost custody of his son and for "accusing him of being a terrorist." But authorities declined to officially identify the suspect until a medical examiner verified it. Police arrived at the home of Boulware's father as an Associated Press reporter was there later on Saturday and began questioning the elder Boulware, also named James.

According to police, the suspect opened fire on the building from his parked van. Bullets pierced the glass at the entrance and caused damage inside, including at the front desk, where the worker on duty had just gone to get a soft drink.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Shock and sadness in a Southwest Baltimore community after a double murder. One of the victims — just seven-years-old.

Derek Valcourt has more on the victims and where the investigation stands right now.

Family members look on in horror as the bodies of the mother and her young son are pulled from their home at 103 Upmanor Road in the Uplands neighborhood of Southwest Baltimore.

Jennifer Jeffrey Browne, 31, and her seven-year-old son Kester “Tony” Browne were found dead just after 8 a.m. Thursday — both shot in the head.

Neighbors — appalled.

“Who can do this? What kind of person is he?” asked Donald Barber.

Police: George Zimmerman involved in Florida shooting

(CNN) George Zimmerman -- acquitted by a Florida jury over the death of Trayvon Martin -- was involved in a shooting in Lake Mary, Florida, on Monday, police spokeswoman Bianca Gillett said.

Zimmerman apparently suffered a minor gunshot wound, CNN affiliate WESH-TV reported, citing the police chief.

The affiliate spoke with one witness, Ricardo Berrare, who also said Zimmerman's injuries didn't look serious.

"He walked normally into the ambulance, so he wasn't being helped or nothing," Berrare told WESH.

The shooting is under investigation, but it appeared to be some type of road rage incident, Gillett told CNN.

Police said there were no fatalities in the shooting and said the department would not release additional information until a briefing planned for Monday afternoon.

It is the latest headline-grabbing incident for Zimmerman since his acquittal in July 2013 on a murder charge in the death of Martin, a 17-year-old African-American.

Zimmerman fatally shot Martin on February 26, 2012.

On that day, Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain in Sanford, Florida, called 911 to report "a suspicious person" in the neighborhood.

He was instructed not to get out of his SUV or approach the person, but Zimmerman disregarded the instructions. Moments later, neighbors report hearing gunfire.

Zimmerman was pulled over for speeding in northern Texas in July 2013, a few weeks after he was acquitted of Martin's death.

To gunmen were killed and a security guard wounded in an attack Sunday outside a controversial Dallas-area event where organizers were holding a contest for cartoons featuring the Muslim prophet Muhammad, police said.

The Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest, led by prominent conservatives who are critical of Islam, was ending when two men drove up in a car and began shooting at a Garland school security officer, Bruce Joiner, who was apparently helping protect the building, city officials said.

“He was shot in the leg, transported to the hospital and he’ll be fine,” Garland Mayor Douglas Athas said.

Suspect In NYPD Officer Shooting Spent Over 5 Years In Jail

A man who served five years in prison for attempted murder was arraigned Sunday on charges that he shot a New York City police officer in the head.

Demetrius Blackwell was ordered held without bail after appearing in court in a torn jumpsuit with his hands cuffed behind his back and legs shackled.

He was arrested Saturday night and charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Officer Brian Moore, who remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition after hours of surgery. Doctors have placed him in a medically induced coma.

At the arraignment, the 35-year-old suspect did not enter a plea. He is due back in court Friday.

Officials said Moore was shot on a Queens street after he and his patrol partner — both in plainclothes in an unmarked police car — pulled up to a man adjusting his waistband in a suspicious way, police Commissioner William Bratton said.

The officers ordered Blackwell to stop and exchanged words with him, but prosecutors say he turned suddenly and fired at least twice, striking Moore. His partner, Officer Erik Jansen, was not hit and radioed for help.

Officer’s Vital Signs Plummeting After Being Shot In The Head

The distraught family of NYPD Officer Brian Moore was preparing for the worst Sunday as his condition deteriorated from a bullet wound to the head that left him on life support.

Moore’s parents, including his retired-cop dad, Raymond, were joined by his police partner and dozens of other officers at Jamaica Hospital after he began bleeding uncontrollably and his blood pressure plummeted early Sunday, sources told The Post.

At one point, a police chaplain was called to the hospital after Moore, 25, underwent four hours of emergency surgery to repair the damage from a bullet that struck him in his forehead and exited the back of his neck, tearing his brain stem, sources said.

His older sister, Christine, cut short a trip out of town and was flying back home after learning of the dire situation, sources said.

South Carolina police shooting victim Walter Scott and his passenger were looking forward to a cookout they had planned for later in the day when Scott was shot, the passenger’s attorney tells ABC News.

Pierre Fulton, who has been identified as the passenger in Scott’s car on the morning of April 4 when Scott was pulled over for a broken tail light, had known Scott for the past four or five years, becoming better friends when they started working together several months ago.

Fulton’s attorney, Mark Peper, said the pair knew each other casually from the neighborhood, then started commuting together and that’s when they started to get to know one another.

A Waukegan teenager had just stolen a handgun from another man when he was shot and killed by Zion police during a foot chase, authorities said late Monday.
The man told police he had arranged to meet with 17-year-old Justus Howell in Zion on Saturday afternoon to sell him the weapon, officials said. But then Howell tried to take the gun from him without paying for it and the two struggled over the weapon before Howell fled with the weapon when police showed up, according to a news release from Zion police.

Concealed Carry Permit Holder Stops Gunman During Mass Shooting

On March 22 a man who opened fire on children and adults in a Philadelphia barbershop was shot and killed by a citizen with a concealed carry permit.

The armed citizen had been walking by the barbershop when he heard gunshots. He ran inside and shot the gunman.

According NBC Philadelphia, the incident arose after two men got into a fight in the barbershop. An unnamed 40-year-old man fought with another customer then pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Police said the man fired on “customers and barbers,” and some of those customers were children. As the 40-year-old man was firing, the citizen with a concealed permit entered the barbershop and shot the gunman in the chest.

Wednesday, March 4: Fulton County police detective Terence Avery Green was killed, shot in the head by a suspect. According to WXIA-TV, Atlanta: "Police responded to a shots fired call early Wednesday. They were told the suspect was possibly intoxicated. Neighbors said the man was going from house to house, banging on doors and firing a long barrel gun. ...

"(Fulton County Assistant Police Chief Gary) described the situation as an ambush, saying the officers 'were trying to do their job, they were trying to protect this neighborhood from someone who was shooting. And they had no other option but to do their job. And the way it appears to me, they were ambushed without warning.' ...

"Green was a veteran officer with nearly 22 years of service. He is survived by his parents and his four sons."

Thursday, March 5: Officer Robert Wilson III, while on duty and in uniform, walked into a game store to purchase a gift for his son. Two men robbed the store, and shot and killed Officer Wilson. According to CNN: "Wilson was standing at the counter across from employees at the GameStop store when two brothers, Carlton Hipps and Ramone Williams, walked in carrying guns, police said.

"They allegedly stuck up the store with at least five patrons and two employees inside.

"'They said they thought it was going to be an easy target,' said police spokesman Capt. James Clark. ... Wilson confronted (the suspects), and a firefight broke out, police said.

"The officer, an eight-year veteran, stepped away from others in the store to keep them out of the crossfire, police said after watching the store's security camera footage.

"He was a hero and a warrior, Clark said. "He fought until the very, very end, firing at both of them."... Within 30 to 40 seconds, 50 shots fell, he said. ...

"Wilson was 30 years old. In addition to his son, he leaves behind a 1-year-old daughter. His son turns 10 on Monday. The game was also going to be a birthday present."

Saturday, March 7: Police Officer Brennan Rabain was killed while trying to make a traffic stop on a speeding driver. The officer lost control of his squad car and crashed into a fence. According to the local NBC affiliate news: "Police are searching for anyone who may have witnessed a crash that killed a Prince George's County police officer. ... Rabain had been off duty, but when he initiated the traffic stop, he went back on duty, police said." Rabain, 27, had been with the department less than two years, and leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.

Tuesday, March 10: Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Wells, 27, was killed in a shootout near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as he attempted to apprehend a fugitive accused of killing a brother and sister.

According the Associated Press: "The fugitive, Jamie D. Croom, 31, was shot and taken to a hospital. ... Croom was wanted in the shooting deaths of a brother and sister in New Roads, Louisiana. ...

"The shootout took place in Scotlandville, an area north of Baton Rouge. A task force made by federal Marshals was serving an arrest warrant when the shootout happened. ... Croom, a resident of New Roads, had a lengthy criminal record, (local Sheriff Beauregard) Torres said. 'He was a dangerous criminal,' Torres said. 'It was a very high price to pay for this warrant to bring this man into custody. It was a very, very high price.'

"Wells was a graduate of East Central High School in Hurley, Mississippi, and of Jackson State University. 'He was a tremendous student,' East Central Principal James Hughey told WLOX-TV. 'He was very well liked.' ... Wells' father, Obie Wells Sr., is a retired Jackson County sheriff's deputy. His brother, Obie Wells Jr., is an officer with the Jackson Police Department in the state capital.

"'His dad was so proud of him for being a U.S. marshal,' (Mississippi state Rep. Manly) Barton said." The day after his death, Wells' wife -- who is pregnant with the couple's first child -- learned the sex of their baby. She is having a boy, and she plans to name him Josie Wells, Jr.

Last year, according to the nonprofit National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 126 federal, state, local, tribal and territorial officers died in the line of duty in 2014 -- although some deaths were attributed to health problems or traffic accidents. Fifty officers were killed by firearms, 15 of them in ambush attacks.

The memorial fund says that shootings against officers increased 50 percent in 2014. This total includes two NYPD officers killed in December in an ambush. The suspect, killed by police, had posted Internet messages that accused police of racism, threatened to kill officers and urged others to do the same.

Despite the widely publicized recent cases where cops killed blacks, new studies show cops -- black and white -- more reluctant to shoot a black suspect compared to a white suspect. Reasons are unclear, but fear of additional scrutiny -- whether fair or not -- might be a factor.

Suspects who kill cops, however, appear colorblind.

Eric Holder: Shooting Of Police Officers In Ferguson 'Inexcusable And Repugnant'

Attorney General Eric Holder issued a statement this morning in reaction to the shooting of two police officers in Ferguson, Missouri.

“This heinous assault on two brave law enforcement officers was inexcusable and repugnant,” Holder says, condemning the violence against public safety officials.

The two police officers were shot as protestors gathered in front of the police station – the same day the police chief resigned.

Holder seemed particularly upset that the shootings took place after his department issued a report highlighting civil rights abuses in Ferguson.

“Such senseless acts of violence threaten the very reforms that nonviolent protesters in Ferguson and around the country have been working towards for the past several months,” he said.

Holder insisted he and his entire department would be willing to assist the police force in finding the responsible shooter.

Ferguson: 2 Police Officers Shot After Chief Resigns

The overnight shootings of two police officers in Ferguson was an "ambush," St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar told reporters Thursday morning, saying the gunshots were directed at the police.

Police investigating the overnight shooting "perhaps" have some leads on who shot them, but no one is in custody, Belmar said.

Belmar said he wouldn't add details about those possible leads, saying detectives need time to work the case. Identifying the shooter or shooters is the No. 1 priority of St. Louis County police, he said.

Whoever shot the officers was there "for whatever nefarious reason it was" to inflict harm, Belmar said.

Belmar also gave details about the officers' injuries:

-- One of them -- an officer from Webster Groves, Missouri -- was shot "at the high point" of his cheek, under his right eye, and the bullet is now lodged behind one of his ears, Belmar said.

-- The other officer struck, from St. Louis County, was shot in his shoulder and the bullet came out the middle of his back, according to Belmar.

The two police officers were standing next to each other in front of the Ferguson, Missouri, police department when they were hit around midnight, Belmar said.

Authorities believe a handgun was used to shoot the two officers, Belmar said, "based on the way the shots sounded and the injuries to the police officers."
