CNN: Brian Williams Out As ‘Nightly News’ Anchor But Still With NBC

NEW YORK, June 17 (UPI) — Brian Williams and NBC have reached an agreement for the former NBC Nightly News anchor to remain with the network, but not in his previous post.

Williams is four months into his six-month suspension for inconsistencies in his reporting that have led some to speculate NBC would sever ties with him.

Sources told CNN Money that Williams will remain with the network, but will likely take a role on cable station MSNBC. The details of that new role have yet to be revealed.

“No one knows anything,” one source, an anchor, told CNN.

Another source told The New York Times an announcement about Williams’ future is likely to be made Thursday by NBC. The source said Williams will probably start off reporting breaking news.

American Keith Bloomfield Killed Fighting Against ISIS In Syria

An American man killed fighting alongside Kurdish forces against ISIS believed it was "God's will" that he go to Syria, his mother told NBC News.

"I didn't want him to go but I didn't have a choice in the matter," Keith Broomfield's mother, Donna, tearfully said in a phone interview Wednesday from Westminster, Massachusetts.

A woman who identified herself as Keith Broomfield's sister posted a text-message exchange on her Facebook page in which he explained his reasons for going overseas.

"I'm gonna do what I got to do," he wrote. "Sometimes you got to be a man whether you want to or not. I don't expect anyone to understand but I don't need anyone to either.'

A State Department official confirmed to NBC News that Broomfield, 36, was killed in Syria. The official did not provide further details, saying only that the State Department was in touch with his family.

Exclusive: Patient With Extreme Form of TB Sent to NIH

A female patient with an extremely hard-to-treat form of tuberculosis is being treated at the National Institutes of Health outside Washington, D.C., and federal and state officials are now tracking down hundreds of people who may have been in contact with her.

The woman traveled to at least three states before she sought treatment from a U.S. doctor. While TB is not easily caught by casual contact, extensively drug resistant (XDR) TB is so dangerous that health officials will have to make a concerted effort to warn anyone who may be at risk.

"The patient was transferred to the NIH via special air and ground ambulances," the NIH said in a statement.

"The patient is staying in an isolation room in the NIH Clinical Center specifically designed for handling patients with respiratory infections, including XDR-TB. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the NIH, is providing care and treatment for the patient in connection with an existing NIH clinical protocol for treating TB, including XDR forms. NIAID has treated other XDR-TB patients in the past under this protocol," the NIH said.

Domestic Violence Offenders Giving Up Guns In Texas

(NBC News) -- Since the first week of May, a sheriff's deputy stationed inside Dallas' DFW Gun Range has had a unique assignment: confiscate and catalog guns given up by domestic violence offenders.

It's the first time in Texas that government is teaming up with a private gun range to collect firearms from convicted batterers in Dallas County — and advocates hope it's an approach that can serve as a role model nationwide.

Dallas, where domestic homicides have been on the rise in recent years, is a prime place to start. Domestic violence has gotten so out of hand in Texas' third-largest city that Mayor Mike Rawlings previously told NBC News the crime is "the biggest act of terrorism," shrouded behind closed doors and spoken of in hushed tones.

Texas: No Indictment For Police Officer Who Shot Unarmed Mexican Man

Texas grand jury will not indict a police officer in the shooting death of an unarmed Mexican man which has made headlines in the U.S. and Mexico.

Ruben Garcia Villalpando, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, died Feb. 20 after Grapevine Police Officer Robert Clark shot him twice in the chest. A dashcam video released by authorities shows Villalpando with his hands up moving toward the police car as the officer tells him to stop moving. Two shots are then heard on the video. The family's attorney explained that Villalpando had been intoxicated and had run from the police, but said the father of 4 did not deserve to die.

The Mexican government condemned the fatal shooting.

Passenger On Amtrak Locomotive Says His Train Was Also Struck By Object

A passenger traveling along the same route the night that Amtrak Train 188 derailed in Philadelphia told NBC News that an object hit his train, shattering the window.

The account from Johns Hopkins student Justin Landis makes him the third person to report a projectile hitting a train Tuesday night in that area, and comes a day after the National Transportation Safety Board said investigators were working to determine whether something struck the doomed Amtrak train before it derailed. Eight people were killed and about 200 others were injured in the accident.

Landis was traveling on southbound Amtrak Acela 2173 and nearing the Philadelphia 30th Street Station around 9:20 p.m. when he was jolted by the sound of an object hitting and shattering the window of his train car. The passenger sitting next to Landis told him he had seen a rock.

"After I heard about the derailment, I was pretty concerned about what happened," Landis told NBC News. Hoping to find out if the events were connected, he tweeted photos of the damage he saw on board Acela 2173.

Mississippi Police Shooting: Two Hattiesburg Cops Killed During Traffic Stop

Two men and a woman have been charged in the fatal shooting of two Mississippi police officers during a traffic stop in the southern city of Hattiesburg on Saturday night, authorities said Sunday..

The officers, Benjamin J. Deen, 34, and Liquori Tate, 25, were gunned down after one of them pulled over a Hyundai for a speeding violation, according to Warren Strain, a spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.

Three suspects, including two brothers, were arrested in different locations after a manhunt that lasted into the early hours of Sunday morning, Strain said.

Marvin Banks, 29, was charged with two counts of capital murder, grand theft auto, and a felon in possession of a firearm; Joanie Calloway, 22, was charged with two counts of capital murder; and Curtis Banks, 26, was charged with accessory after the fact of capital murder.

Witness To Michael Brown Shooting Sues Ferguson And Darren Wilson

A witness to a police officer's fatal shooting of Michael Brown last summer in Ferguson, Missouri, has filed a lawsuit alleging that he was wrongly stopped and fired on during the encounter on a city street.

The lawsuit, filed last week by Dorian Johnson, claims that the officer, Darren Wilson, fired at him and Brown as they ran away from him on Aug. 9. The lawsuit claims Wilson targeted him without probable cause.


"Officer Wilson acted with either deliberate indifference and/or reckless disregard toward" Johnson, the lawsuit says.

The suit also cited many of the Departmet of Justice findings, arguing that the city and former Police Chief Thomas Jackson "facilitated, encouraged and/or instigated" biased police behavior, including the "excessive force" used against Brown and Johnson.

The lawsuit seeks $25,000 in damages.

A Ferguson spokesman said the city would not comment on pending litigation.

Bill Clinton says he has no regrets about taking millions in foreign cash for his foundation — even though the donations have caused a political headache for Hillary Clinton as she tries to follow him into the Oval Office.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News' Cynthia McFadden, the former president said his charity has never done anything "knowingly inappropriate."

Under pressure, the foundation recently announced it will only accept contributions from six Western governments going forward, but Clinton says that's no acknowledgment the old policy — under which Saudi Arabia gave between $10 million and $25 million, for instance — was a mistake.

"Absolutely not," Clinton told NBC News during his current tour of Africa to visit a wide variety of the foundation's projects.

"It's an acknowledgement that we're going to come as close as we can during her presidential campaign to following the rules we followed when she became secretary of state."

The 42nd president says he is "proud" of his foundation's work.

It was supposed to be a celebratory day. Loretta Lynch stood beaming next to Vice President Joe Biden as he declared "it's about time" and swore her in as attorney general on Monday. The audience laughed. The frustration of a months-long delay in Lynch's confirmation as Congress bickered over policy matters was now behind them.

But the good cheer was cut short.

By nightfall, Baltimore erupted in violence as protestors burned buildings and cars, clashed with law enforcement, broke windows and looted. The events unfolded mere hours after the funeral of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who sustained a spinal injury while in police custody and later died.

On her first day on the job, Lynch was immediately pressed into dealing with the aftermath — she dispatched Justice Department officials to help calm the chaos and speak with community leaders and local officials. On her second day of the job, the Department of Justice announced it launched an investigation into the nature of Gray's death.

The Nigerian militant group Boko Haram has pledged official allegiance to ISIS, according to an audio statement released online Saturday. In the audio, a man claiming to be Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau appears to address ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, and also calls on Muslims throughout the world to declare a similar loyalty.

The message, posted via Boko Haram social media accounts, was confirmed by Flashpoint Intelligence, a global security firm and NBC News consultant. According to Flashpoint, the audio confirms what many analysts have said would happen: a bridging between Boko Haram and ISIS. Boko Haram is also following ISIS's trend of releasing messages online and mimicking the terror network's propaganda.

ISIS has not yet responded. Laith Alkhouri, director of MENA research and analysis at Flashpoint, said it is likely the terror group would accept Boko Haram's apparent proposal. The message by Boko Haram was in the same format as messages released by other groups that have pledged to fight under ISIS's black flag, and in those cases ISIS has accepted, he said.

When Comcast acquired NBCUniversal in 2011, Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts called NBC News "the crown jewel" of his new empire. With good reason: At the time, the news division was dominant on all fronts. 'Today' was number-one in the morning, 'Nightly News' was number-one at night, and 'Meet The Press' was number-one on Sunday.

In four short years, Comcast's "crown jewel" has been tarnished. Not only have 'Today' and 'Meet' both fallen from first place, their falls have been accompanied by the excruciating public humiliation of the programs' top talent. Ann Curry, the former Today co-host, was privately undermined and publicly humiliated before being kicked off the show in 2012. David Gregory, the former moderator of 'Meet The Press', was hung out to dry for over a year before being booted in 2014.

Now, Brian Williams is the subject of an internal investigation into his false claim that he was on-board a Chinook helicopter that was hit by an RPG in Iraq. The Williams controversy has been made worse by the fact that he appears to have continued misleading viewers even as he apologized for his initial error.

NBC News’s senior executives are deeply divided about the fate of Brian Williams, the Nightly News anchor currently on leave for telling tall tales about his time in Iraq and, potentially, in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

At a meeting over the weekend at the New York City home of NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke, network executives huddled to decide Williams’s fate, but they emerged with little agreement on a path forward. The division is reflective of the broader disarray within NBC News.

With respect to Williams, one camp believes that, in the words of a source with knowledge of the situation, “Brian is cooked. Done. Has lost his credibility as an anchor and must go. The only question is who goes down with him.”

‘NBC Nightly News’ Anchor Brian Williams Suspended for Six Months Without Pay

Brian Williams has been suspended from his post as anchor of “NBC Nightly News” for six months without pay.

“We have decided today to suspend Brian Williams as Managing Editor and Anchor of NBC Nightly News for six months. The suspension will be without pay and is effective immediately,” NBC News president Deborah Turness said in a memo.

Williams has been the subject of controversy in recent days after he was forced to recant a 2003 Iraq war story in which he claimed a helicopter he was flying on was struck by RPG fire.

“This was wrong and completely inappropriate for someone in Brian’s position,” Turness said in the memo.

Wave of Fake Federal And State Tax Returns Filed, Experts Say

The recent flood of fraudulent tax returns -- both state and federal -- is the work of "a criminal gang, possibly working outside the country," a leading cyber security expert told NBC News.

Haywood Talcove, CEO for government solutions at LexisNexis, believes the gang is using stolen user names and passwords to gain access to the accounts of people who use online tax preparation software.


"This is potentially the most serious breach of personally identifiable information in the history of our country," Talcove said. "The tax form is the mother lode of personal information."

Armed with this stolen information -- Social Security number, date of birth, dependents, employer and adjusted gross income -- the thieves can file bogus state and federal income tax returns. If they can file before you do and their fake return makes it through the system, they can steal a sizeable refund.
