Al Qaeda Linked Group Says Seized Army Base In South Yemen
(Reuters) - Al Qaeda-linked fighters seized a large army base in a dawn attack in southern Yemen on Thursday, militants and residents said, hours after the United Nations warned that the country was on the brink of civil war.
The base in the southern province of Shabwa, housing a brigade of up to 2,000 government soldiers, fell after several hours of heavy clashes, residents and local news sites said.
The al Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Sharia said on Twitter it had set off a suicide bomb at the gate and imprisoned some of the troops.
Al Qaeda and other Sunni Muslim militants have stepped up attacks since rival Iranian-backed Shi'ite Muslim fighters from the north seized the capital in September and started expanding across the country.
The Houthis have sidelined the central government and have clashed with Sunni tribesmen in Yemen, which borders oil giant Saudi Arabia.

Yemen: Another Failure The Obama Administration Touted As A Success

Despite Obama administration claims, Al Qaeda is not on the run. In fact, they're gaining strength. Yemen is far from the success we should be depending on to fight ISIS and Obama's suggestion it has been a "success" begs-the-question of whether he's actually serious about "degrading and ultimately destroying" ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Newsday Two Yemeni Citizens Indicted For Plotting To Kill Americans

Saddiq Al-Abbadi and Ali Avi, aged 36 and 30, were arrested in Saudi Arabia and extradited to the U.S. They are accused of leading al-Qaeda and Taliban troops in battles against U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2003 and 2009.
The charges against them were filed earlier this week in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, which covers Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island. The U.S. attorney there, Loretta Lynch, is the current nominee for U.S. attorney general.

New Issue Of Jihadist Magazine Produced By Al-Qaeda In Yemen Suggests Attacks On U.S.

The most infamous article published by Inspire, a Khan-authored instructional guide titled “How to Build a Bomb in the Kitchen of your Mom,” was used by the Boston Marathon bombers in a pressure-cooker explosive they planted in their April 2013 attack, according to prosecutors in the case.
The cover of the new Inspire issue is of a commercial airliner whose undercarriage is being blown up. According to the SITE report, the magazine states that it is “committed to arm Muslim individuals — as well as Muslim groups.”

American Hostage Luke Somers Killed in Rescue Attempt

An American and a South African held hostage for more than a year by al Qaeda’s Yemen branch died after a raid by U.S. Special Operations forces just after midnight Saturday, in the second rescue attempt in as many weeks.
Luke Somers, 33 years old, was mortally shot by militants during the raid, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Saturday. South African teacher Pierre Korkie also was shot during the raid, according to a charity that had been trying to help negotiate his release. Both hostages died later after U.S. forces evacuated them from the building where they were held, U.S. and Yemeni officials said.
