Wednesday on “The Alan Colmes Show,” Alan spoke with Joseph Riley, who has been the mayor of Charleston, SC for four decades and has been helping the community recover from the devastating shooting in a church that left nine people dead. Mayor Riley discussed with Alan his reaction to the debate over the Confederate flag, his take on gun control and his thoughts on Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee’s claim that concealed carry permits could have prevented people from being killed:

RILEY: I’m very hopeful that the legislature will take the necessary action to have the Confederate battle flag moved from the flagpole in front of the state Capital to a museum where it should be. I’m confident that’s going to happen. The will is there in the state and this horrible event by this unbelievably hateful and bigoted man I think will be the sad event that will create action at this time. COLMES: Isn’t that the irony that somebody that wanted to start a race war, we’ve now had the result of, kind of an opposite effect taking place. RILEY: He was trying to spread hate, and rather what he did was enhance love.

Concealed Carry Predictions Way Off Target

When the Wisconsin Senate gathered in June of 2011 to take up a bill allowing the state's citizens to carry concealed weapons, protesters around the Capitol building were still in a state of high dudgeon. As a result, Republicans were accused of "rushing" through "socially divisive" bills such as concealed carry and voter identification through the legislative process while the state's attention was focused elsewhere.

Indeed, on the very day the Senate met to debate concealed weapons, the state Supreme Court issued an opinion upholding Gov. Scott Walker's union changes. Yet in retrospect, the alleged clandestine nature of concealed carry's passage didn't help the bill's supporters. Instead, it may have aided its opponents a great deal more. Now, four years later, there is scant record of how terrible their hysterical predictions actually turned out.

Concealed Carry Permit Holder Stops Gunman During Mass Shooting

On March 22 a man who opened fire on children and adults in a Philadelphia barbershop was shot and killed by a citizen with a concealed carry permit.

The armed citizen had been walking by the barbershop when he heard gunshots. He ran inside and shot the gunman.

According NBC Philadelphia, the incident arose after two men got into a fight in the barbershop. An unnamed 40-year-old man fought with another customer then pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Police said the man fired on “customers and barbers,” and some of those customers were children. As the 40-year-old man was firing, the citizen with a concealed permit entered the barbershop and shot the gunman in the chest.

Most Voters Believe Concealed Carry Permits Are Necessary--Survey Says

Gun supporters and gun protesters alike have almost unanimously come together to draw the line on one aspect of the debate — that people need to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

With the help of Everytown for Gun Safety, a left-leaning advocacy movement, Strategies 360 recently released a report that found 88 percent of likely voters oppose concealed carry without a permit.

While usually polarized between the two sides, voters who support concealed carry — 57 percent — and voters who believe it should be illegal — 40 percent — agree there ought to be a permit system before buying a handgun.

“People feel as though they can still support Second Amendment rights, the right to own a gun and even the right to concealed carry,” said Kevin Ingham, vice president of Strategies 360. “They just draw a very clear line between letting anybody carry a concealed weapon legally and making sure that the people who are carrying a concealed weapon have shown that they are responsible gun owners.”

New Bill Supports Concealed Carry On Campus

The push to allow the concealed carry of firearms on college campuses is underway in the Indiana General Assembly.

“The biggest reason is because of the vulnerability of college campuses in general,” Vining said. “There’s a very good reason you don’t hear about mass shootings taking place in gun shops or gun shows.”

There are already laws that 
allow for the concealed carry of weapons on college campuses in seven states, including Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin.

Well, it's been nearly a year now since Illinois State Police started issuing permits to citizens who met the established criteria. The result? Local authorities say concealed carry in Illinois has been a non-event — in other words, no problem.

The apocalyptic rhetoric and doomsday predictions have turned out to be so much hot air. So also have predictions that anywhere from 300,000 to 400,000 Illinoisans would apply for a permit and start packing heat. So far, the number is around 90,000. The number will grow, but it's a long way to 300,000 concealed carry licenses.

Concealed Carry Permit Holder Sees A Man Beating A Woman In A Car

A Texas motorist who’s also a concealed handgun license holder told police he saw a man beating a woman in another car on Friday afternoon, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

So he got out of his car when both vehicles had stopped, pointed his gun at the other driver and forced him out of the vehicle until Southlake police arrived, the Star-Telegram reported.

Washington D.C. City Council Passes Concealed-Carry Gun Law

(Reuters) - The Washington city council passed emergency gun legislation on Tuesday requiring residents and visitors to adhere to strict guidelines to carry a concealed weapon in the U.S. capital.

The move came after a federal judge in July overturned the District of Columbia's ban on carrying handguns outside the home, saying it was unconstitutional. The judge's order was under a temporary stay, giving the city time to fashion a new law.

"It's a situation where we don't really want to do this, but we have to," Councilman Marion Barry said before the vote.

The new law requires residents to get a concealed-carry permit, complete 16 hour of firearms training and be at least 21 years old. Those with a history of mental illness within the last five years will be ineligible.

Non-residents can carry guns in the District of Columbia if they register their weapon with the city and adhere to the same guidelines required of residents.

Even with a permit, the law forbids carrying guns into bars, public buildings, schools or on public transit. The final decision on issuing a permit rests with the police chief, with appeals sent to a review board.
