Religious Freedom: 'CEOs Against Private Property'

The governor of Indiana last week signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, modeled on similar federal legislation. The Indiana statute states that a person’s religious beliefs may not be “substantially burden[ed]” by anti-discrimination statutes. In other words, if anti-discrimination laws could be construed as forcing a person to violate his own religious conscience, then the law allows for an exemption in that case to anti-discrimination mandates.
The response from the left has been fierce, and multiple CEOs of major firms, including Apple and Salesforce, have come out against the legislation with Salesforce announcing that it will impose a partial boycott on Indiana.
The actual points of the bill are murkier, and Gov. Pence of Indiana is now claiming that the bill does not actually allow business owners to discriminate.

Connecticut’s Governor Doesn’t Understand His Own State’s RFRA
In case you needed more proof that the recent backlash against religious freedom laws is grounded in pure ignorance, look no further than Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy. Malloy, a Democrat, just announced on Twitter that he plans to sign an executive order banning state travel to Indiana due to the midwestern state’s recently enacted Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Malloy Signs Executive Order Banning State-Funded Travel To Indiana
Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy banned state-funded travel to Indiana over its passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which allows businesses in that state to cite religious beliefs as a legal defense.
“No state should use religious grounds to be the basis for discrimination against anyone in our country” Malloy said Monday.
Indiana doesn’t have statewide nondiscrimination laws that protect sexual orientation and gender identity, and many, including Malloy believe the new law will be used to refuse lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people service.
He said there’s no way to interpret what has happened in Indiana over the past few months as anything other than “a desire to establish a legal form of discrimination. Period.”
