LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Mike Pence visited Las Vegas on Saturday stressing unity and offering solace as police appealed to the public for help in uncovering a wealthy retiree’s motive for massacring 58 people at an outdoor concert this week.

“We are united in our grief, in our support for those who have suffered and united in our resolve to end such evil in our time,” Pence said, joining Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and other local leaders at a City Hall commemoration for victims of the shooting.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Her car damaged, her nerves shaken, the victim of an alleged group attack near the University of Chicago campus spoke exclusively with ABC7 Eyewitness News.

Police say two people were arrested and charged, but Susan Pedersen says several dozen people were involved in the attack that left her two children covered in broken glass. They were in the back seat of the vehicle, which was left dented with the rear glass shattered.

"I'm very scared, very anxious, nervous. Just fearful," she said.

Detroit Has Fewest Cops Patrolling Streets In Nearly 100 Years

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) – The Detroit Police Department is suffering from its worst manpower shortage in nearly a century.
There are currently fewer officers patrolling the city than at any time since the 1920s. At one point, the Detroit police force was over 5,000. Today, the force is just 1,590 officers strong — and not all of those are on the street.
The city has lost nearly half its patrol officers since 2000 and ranks have shrunk by 37 percent in the past three years alone, according to the Detroit News. It’s so bad that precincts are reportedly left with only one squad car at times.

“This is a crisis, and the dam is going to break,” Mark Diaz, president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, told the newspaper. “It’s a Catch-22: I know the city is broke, but we’re not going to be able to build up a tax base of residents and businesses until we can provide a safe environment for them.”

It’s important to note that the city’s population has fluctuated greatly over the years. Here’s a breakdown of data segments comparing the number of officers to Detroit residents, according to the report. The city’s current citizen-to-officer ratio is 448 to 1.

Morgan Freeman: White Police Committing 'Terrorism' On Black People"

Morgan Freeman argued Thursday that the unrest in Baltimore is spurred by “the terrorism we suffer from the police” and questioned why so many black people are dying at the hands of white officers.

The Academy Award-winning actor was interviewed by Newsweek to promote his new film with Diane Keaton called “5 Flights Up,” in which New York is thrown into chaos over a suspected terrorist attack. Mr. Freeman said the film does not share similarities to recent real-life events, Newsweek reported.

“That unrest [in Baltimore] has nothing to do with terrorism at all, except the terrorism we suffer from the police,” the 77-year-old star said. “And the fact that now that’s out in the open.”

South Carolina police shooting victim Walter Scott and his passenger were looking forward to a cookout they had planned for later in the day when Scott was shot, the passenger’s attorney tells ABC News.

Pierre Fulton, who has been identified as the passenger in Scott’s car on the morning of April 4 when Scott was pulled over for a broken tail light, had known Scott for the past four or five years, becoming better friends when they started working together several months ago.

Fulton’s attorney, Mark Peper, said the pair knew each other casually from the neighborhood, then started commuting together and that’s when they started to get to know one another.

HEMMER: “Have the politicians made this worse than it would have been otherwise?”

BLUNT: “I think a lot of the reporting made it worse than it would otherwise. I think people —”

HEMMER: “Sorry, sir, are you suggesting the media?”

BLUNT: “Both the media and people explaining things in ways that just were not reality. People talking about armored vehicles as if they were armed vehicles. You know, there is difference in the armored car that goes to the bank and a Sherman tank. But in a lot of this discussion you would thought police were out there with equipment that was designed for some kind of a warfare when it was only designed to protect the police and others. In some cases in Ferguson, people who were shot themselves — and these aren’t the first people shot in Ferguson, Bill. They are the first police that have been shot in Ferguson during these protests. People shot during the protests. The police on occasion had to take armored vehicles in as the only way to get the protesters who were shot out of the situation they were in. That was never reported, I think, in the way that it should have been in a lot of discussion about should they have military equipment? Almost any equipment that they had came not from the military but from homeland security. People would have said, ‘Homeland security equipment? Gee, that’s fine.’ But that wasn’t the discussion”

HEMMER: “Come back to the point about the politicians in the media—and I fully respect your opinion on all of this. That’s why we have you on today. But what the sheriff in Milwaukee is suggesting is that the president and the attorney general need to talk to the people who are living in these communities and remind them to respect authority. That was one of his main points last night. What about that?”

BLUNT: “It was one of his main points. I thought yesterday the president and the attorney general both were on point in talking about how unacceptable this activity was; how—as the attorney general called these people punks. I think both referred to these attempts as ambushes; not a very — that’s a cowardly way to approach anybody. I think they were right there. But I’m not at all sure –“

HEMMER: “Sorry, but it was deeper than that senator. It was about reminding people in these communities long before incidents with Michael Brown took place, that you need to respect the authority and the law, and send the reminders repeatedly so we can avoid the next incident.”

BLUNT: “I don’t disagree with that. I think the both president and the attorney general could have been more helpful in Ferguson and around the country as this division began to develop about policing tactics. There is nothing wrong with people looking at a force to see if pattern and practice could be better. In fact, the St. Louis County force which—one of the officers was in that 1,100 person force— voluntarily has been working with the Justice Department to be sure that all of their practices are what you’d hope they would be. I think when the Justice Department completes that we will find that they are.”

Rasmussen Ferguson Poll: 70% Blame Urban Crime

The fallout continues in Ferguson, Missouri, following a Justice Department report accusing the city government of a widespread pattern of racial discrimination. But in most inner city communities, is racism the real problem?

Not according to 70% of Likely U.S. Voters who say the level of crime in low-income inner city communities is a bigger problem in America today than police discrimination against minorities. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 20% think police discrimination is the bigger problem. Ten percent (10%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

There’s a sharp racial difference of opinion on this question, however. Fifty-six percent (56%) of black voters believe police discrimination against minorities is the bigger problem. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of whites and 54% of other minority voters disagree and view inner city crime as the bigger issue.

The mayor, whose wife is black, said he has spoken to his mixed race teen son about how he should act if he is stopped by police.

In speaking about protesters who were arrested and charged with assaulting police during a demonstration in New York, de Blasio used the word "allegedly," which some in the NYPD seemed to take as a slight.

Patrolmens Benevolent Association president Patrick Lynch and de Blasio have been locked in a public battle over treatment of officers following the grand jury's decision.

After blathering on for a half-minute about the "blue wall of silence" — cops who see improper things occurring and don't report them — Rangel first denied that the "dead cops" chants ever took place, and then blew them off.

"We know we have the right guy in custody," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said. "This guy knew what he was doing, he killed a cop and he needs to be held accountable for that."

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, Parilla served more than two years in prison for several offenses, including drug charges, and was released in March. He was listed as a fugitive for violating his probation. It wasn't immediately clear what the violation was.

The question was asked as part of a first-of-its-kind Rare poll that surveyed only respondents under 40. The questions were tailored to chart trends in the opinions of younger voters.

State Police say 51 people were arrested in Boston late Tuesday night during protests of a grand jury’s decision not to indict a white Ferguson, Missouri, officer who fatally shot an unarmed black teenager.

All but one were turned over to Boston police for booking Wednesday, most on disorderly conduct charges.

The officers raced to the high-priority call, where parents were fighting and a young child was present.

The Sunbury police officers quickly learned that a gun was in the kitchen and went in to get it. A tense situation was easily defused; that is, until the father accused the officers of illegally searching his home and seizing weapons and a knife.

If not for the officers’ eyeglass-mounted video cameras, the case might have brought charges of police abuse, Fourth Amendment violations and a lengthy investigation. Instead, video from the pencil-size cameras, downloaded back at the station, showed the officers simply doing their job.
