OJ Simpson Ford Bronco Chase Filmed for 'American Crime Story'

By Michael Rothman, Jun. 11, 2015, ABC News

More than two decades after the chase that had millions glued to their TV screens, FX recreated the O.J. Simpson white Ford Bronco chase with police for the series "American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson."

Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr., 47, can be seen in the iconic white Bronco, the same type of vehicle that the football star was in on the freeway, while police trailed behind in 1994.

More than 90 million tuned in to watch this chase, where eventually O.J. got on the phone with police and gave his side of the story while Al Cowlings, Simpson’s friend, drove the car.

Gooding Jr. will play Simpson on the show, which focuses on the mid-1990's murder trial. Malcolm-Jamal Warner plays Cowlings.

Simpson, 67, was eventually arrested for the murder of ex-wife Nicole Brown, but acquitted months later in what was billed as the trial of the century.

5 Ways the IRS Scammers Could Have Stolen All Those Tax Returns

By Adam Levin, Jun. 7, 2015, ABC News

Last week, the Internal Revenue Service revealed that a group of organized criminals effectively walked through their front door and used an application on its “Get Transcript” site to pore over the past tax returns of more than 100,000 Americans. According to several news reports, the stolen information was deployed to commit tax fraud, with an estimated take of up to $50 million in bogus tax refunds before the IRS discovered the ploy.

We’re confident that these are not amateurs,” John Koskinen, the IRS commissioner, told the New York Times. “These actually are organized crime syndicates that not only we but everybody in the financial industry are dealing with.”

But if I may be so bold, isn’t the IRS supposed to be better at this? It is, after all, the chief tax collector for the U.S. government, for Heaven’s sake. It’s frustrating that the government isn’t better, but it’s not terribly shocking that scammers got through, considering the well-practiced foe the agency is facing.

California's Drought Spurring Water Recycling At Home

By Ellen Knickmeyer, Jun. 5, 2015, ABC News

Showering during California's drought is a guilt-free experience for homeowners Catarina Negrin and Noah Friedman.

The Berkeley couple — she runs a preschool, he's an architect — are early adopters of a home plumbing do-over that's becoming more popular during California's record four-year dry stretch.

California, like many states, long required all water used in homes to be piped out with the sewage, fearing health risks if water recycling is done clumsily.

Since 2010, however, the increasingly dry state has come around, and now even encourages the reuse of so-called gray water, which typically includes the gently-used runoff from bathroom sinks, showers, bathtubs and washing machines.

As mandatory conservation kicked in statewide this month, forcing many of California's 38 million people to face giving up on greenery, these recycling systems have become attractive options in new homes, right along with granite countertops. California Building Industry Association executive Robert Raymer rattles off the drought-conscious top builders that now routinely offer in-home water recycling.

And California's building codes are catching up as well, allowing owners of existing homes to create the simplest systems for the safest gray water without a permit.

Cops Use DNA Analysis to Prove Chili's Waiter Spit in Customer's Drink

By Evan Simon, Jun. 3, 2015, ABC News

A New York man who suspected that a Chili's restaurant waiter had spit into his drink got the law involved and investigators were able to determine who spit into the drink using DNA analysis, according to court documents.

The incident took place last July, when Ken Yerdon and his wife, Julie Aluzzo Yerdon, went to dinner at a Chili's restaurant on Route 31 in Clay, New York, according to court documents from a lawsuit filed Tuesday. The couple complained to their server, Gregory Lamica, then 24, that their food was under-cooked and that they hadn't been served chips, Yerdon said.

"They were polite to the server, and even left a tip," Robert Lahm, a lawyer representing the Yerdons in the case, told ABC News today.

New Orleans Cop Shot Dead In Cruiser

By Emily Shapiro, May 24, 2015, ABC News

A New Orleans police officer was found shot dead in his marked patrol car this morning, city officials said.

The shooting was reported around 7 a.m., the New Orleans Police Department said in a news release. The victim's car rolled forward and struck a curb after the shooting.

The officer's name has not been released, but the New Orleans police identified the victim as a 45-year-old man who worked as a Housing Authority police officer.

A Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) police officer "Investigates complaints, maintains order, aids individuals, and identifies criminal offenders," according to a summary of the position on hano.org. The officers also perform "unplanned physical tasks which include the restraining of violent individuals, running, climbing fences and responding to EMS and rescue emergencies. Officers must handle gun belts," the summary said.

The officer had been a member of the HANO Police Department since 2013, according to the police press release. The police department declined to comment further.

Protest And Arrests Continue After Cop's Acquittal

By Dean Schabner, May 23, 2015, ABC News

Largely peaceful demonstrations following the acquittal of a Cleveland police officer in the killing of an unarmed couple continued this evening, as some groups of people turned more rowdy and police said there were multiple arrests.

A spokesman for the mayor's office said it was not clear how many of the arrests were directly related to the protests and how many were people "being a nuisance."

"We are trying to sort that out," said Dan Williams, a spokesman for Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson.

Michael Brelo was acquitted of voluntary manslaughter and a lesser charge of felonious assault in the shooting deaths of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams. He was visibly emotional as Cuyahoga County Judge John O'Donnell read a portion of his verdict in open court.

Clinton's Benghazi Emails Show Correspondence With Adviser

By Lisa Lerer, Matthew Lee, May 21, 2015, Associated Press

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton received monthly missives about the growing unrest in Libya from a longtime friend who was previously barred by the White House from working for her as a government employee, according to emails received on her personal account.

The messages show the role played by Sidney Blumenthal, who was working for the Clinton family foundation and advising a group of entrepreneurs trying to win business from the Libyan transitional government. Blumenthal repeatedly wrote dispatches about the events in Libya to Clinton, who often forwarded them to her aides at the State Department.

Clinton's earlier efforts to hire Blumenthal, who has spent nearly two decades working for the Clinton family, as a State Department employee had been rejected by Obama administration officials who said they feared his role spreading harsh attacks against Obama in the 2008 presidential primaries would cause discomfort among members of their new White House team.

Clinton is the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination for president, which has heightened the scrutiny of her use of a private email account and server while serving as secretary of state.

Schweizer: Stephanopoulos, ABC have Not Fully Disclosed Clinton Ties

By Peter Schweizer, May 18, 2015, USA Today

Fact-driven, fair, aggressive journalism animates American politics. As an investigative journalist, I am accustomed to asking tough questions. When I publish, I expect tough questions in turn,

That's not what ABC News This Week host and chief anchor George Stephanopoulos delivered when he interviewed me about my new book on the Clinton Foundation last month. There's a reason. Though Stephanopoulos belatedly disclosed $75,000 in donations to the foundation, he has yet to disclose his much deeper relationship with the Clinton Foundation.

When Stephanopoulos invited me on his Sunday program, I knew that he had worked as a top adviser and campaign manager to President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, but I didn't know about his donations or his other ties to the foundation founded and overseen by the former president and his wife, potential future president Hillary Clinton.

Abc Faces Credibility Crisis Over Stephanopoulos Donations

By David Bauder, May 15, 2015, Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- George Stephanopoulos apologized to viewers Friday for donating $75,000 to the Clinton Foundation and failing to disclose it earlier, as ABC News now finds its chief anchor in a credibility crisis on the eve of a presidential campaign.

Stephanopoulos said on "Good Morning America" that the donations, made in three increments to the foundation started by his one-time boss, former President Bill Clinton, were a mistake.

"I should have gone the extra mile to avoid even the appearance of a conflict," the "GMA" and "This Week" host said. "I apologize to all of you for failing to do that."

Stephanopoulos rose to the top ranks at ABC over 18 years and worked to establish himself as an independent journalist despite skepticism by some in politics because of his background as a top aide to Clinton's 1992 campaign and later in the White House. The donations brought that issue back to the fore just as Hillary Rodham Clinton is launching her presidential campaign.

ABC News President James Goldston has not addressed whether Stephanopoulos will be disciplined. The network said in a statement Thursday that it stands behind Stephanopoulos and that the anchor made an honest mistake. ABC said Stephanopoulos voluntarily removed himself as a moderator for ABC's planned coverage of a GOP presidential debate next February.

The 12 Biggest Moments The Bruce Jenner Interview

By ABC News, Apr. 24, 2015, ABC News

Bruce Jenner sat down for a far-ranging two-hour interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer. Here are the 12 biggest moments from that interview:

1. Bruce Jenner: 'I’m a Woman’

“For all intents and purposes, I’m a woman,” Jenner said. “People look at me differently. They see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life -- it is part of me.”

2. Bruce Jenner Say This is Not a Publicity Stunt

“We’re going to make a difference in the world with what we’re doing, and if the whole Kardashian show gave me a foothold into that world, to be able to go out there and do something good, I got not problem with that,” Jenner said.

ABC News Keeps Tight Lid On Bruce Jenner Interview

Source:  ABC News

David Baurer, Apr. 22, 2015, Yahoo.com

NEW YORK (AP) — The first on-air promo for Friday's broadcast interview with Bruce Jenner didn't even show his face, an illustration of the line ABC News is walking in trying to drum up interest for the program while saying virtually nothing about it.

The two-hour interview special with the 1976 Olympic decathlon champion and estranged patriarch of television's Kardashian clan is expected to touch on transgenderism and reports that he may be transitioning to a woman.

ABC has released only a couple of non-specific quotes by Jenner and is not expected to reveal much more in advance of Friday's program, preferring to give him the opportunity to address the topic in the full context of the interview.

Diane Sawyer has not spoken to outside media about the interview, which was conducted in February - one day in Los Angeles, another in New York. She's scheduled to promote it on ABC properties Friday: "Good Morning America," ''Live with Kelly and Michael" and "The View." ABC News executives also haven't spoken about it, not even confirming publicly until April 6 that the interview had taken place, until this Friday's airdate was set.

Missouri Dem Rep. Clay: Ferguson PD Criminalizing People Based on Their Skin Color

Mar. 15, 2015

CLAY: It’s possible. If that’s what justified the existence of the police force, then, yes. The police force probably should be dismantled and allow the St. Louis County police a better trained force, a more qualified force, a larger force to actually come in and conduct policing in a totally different way that restores the trust of the people, that shows respect to the people who pay their salaries and to start and to stop judging people by the color of their skins and criminalizing it because of what color they are, which is evident — is what was happening up to this point in Ferguson and surrounding communities.

Pajama-Clad Bill Cosby Breaks Silence With Bizarre Video Message To Fans

By Matt Willstein, Mar. 9, 2015, Mediaite.com

Since the cascade of rape allegations that began to mount against Bill Cosby starting last fall, the comedian has mostly stayed out of the public eye, releasing a handful of tweets and written statements to thank his few defenders, but otherwise ignoring his disturbing situation. On Monday, Cosby made his first televised appearance in months — by giving ABC News an “exclusive” 10 second clip in which he talks on the phone in his pajamas.

“You know I’ll be hilarious. Can’t wait,” Cosby says into the phone about his upcoming stand-up dates, without mentioning the more than two dozen women who have accused him of rape. “Dear Fans: I hope you enjoy my wonderful video message that’s filled with laughter. Hey, hey, hey. I’m far from finished,” he added in a written statement that accompanied the video, referencing the name of his ongoing tour.

George Stephanopoulos Wonders if Clinton’s ‘Critics Overreact’ on Email Scandal

Mar. 9, 2015

WRIGHT (voice over): “Transparency is at the heart of the email controversy. President Obama told CBS News it was news to him that the Blackberry she carried everywhere as Secretary of State did not have a government email address.”

OBAMA: “The policy of my administration is to encourage transparency, and that’s why my emails, the Blackberry that I carry around, all those records are available and archived.”

WRIGHT: “Hey, are you excited to be in Iowa?”

BUSH: “I am. I am.”

WRIGHT: “Here in Iowa Jeb Bush has his own baggage to deal with.”

[clip ends]

HARRIS: “She has sidestepped as we saw in Florida the email issue. But this story seems to have legs. How big a problem is it for her?”

STEPHANOPOULOS: “Well, I think we’re going to find out. I don’t think necessarily it’s going to necessarily, it’s not going bring down her campaign and I think it does raise questions about a pattern of kind of hunkering down in the Clinton world. We’ll also see if her critics overreact on this one but there’s no question that those emails are going to be to turned over, most of them are going to come out. The question will be what is inside them? Is there anything damaging there? If not I think this tends to blow over, but I think this was a wake-up call to the Clinton campaign about the kind of questions they’re going to be getting all through this process.”

Villarrica Volcano Erupts in Southern Chile, Thousands Flee

Chile:  Villarrica Volcano Erupts
By ABC News, Mar. 3, 2015, Associated Press

One of South America's most active volcanoes erupted early Tuesday in southern Chile, spewing heavy smoke into the air as lava surged down its slopes, prompting authorities to evacuate thousands of people.

The Villarrica volcano erupted around 3 a.m. local time, according to the National Emergency Office, which issued a red alert and ordered evacuations. Local media showed images of the volcano bursting at the top, glowing in the dark amid heavy smoke and rivers of lava. Authorities worried that mudslides caused by melting snow could endanger nearby communities, but no injuries were reported.

The 9,000 foot (2,847-meter) volcano in Chile's central valley, 400 miles (670 kilometers) south of Santiago, sits above the small city of Pucon, which has a population of about 22,000 people.

"It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen," 29-year-old Australian tourist Travis Armstrong said in a telephone interview from Pucon. "I've never seen a volcano erupt and it was spewing lava and ash hundreds of meters into the air. Lightning was striking down at the volcano from the ash cloud that formed from the eruption."

False Gunman Warning Panics Los Angeles Airport Passengers

By Associated Press, Feb. 16, 2015

A mistaken public announcement that a gunman was on the loose at a Los Angeles International Airport terminal sent about 20 passengers fleeing from the gate area and onto the tarmac Monday, authorities said.

The "misinformed" announcement from the public address system apparently stemmed from police activity outside Terminal 2, where officers had pursued an unarmed driver to the departures level, LAX Police Sgt. Belinda Joseph said.

Police had responded to an emergency call around 9 a.m. that a man may be trying to commit suicide off airport property. They apprehended the man, and the fire department took him to a hospital for treatment of an unspecified condition — but "someone said that there was a man with a gun, which was not true," Joseph said.

Somehow, that rumor made it onto the public address system. It was not immediately clear who made the announcement.

Bruce Jenner Involved In Fatal Car Crash, Passes Sobriety Test

Scene of the crash
By Emily Shapiro, Feb. 7, 2015, ABCNews.com

Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner was involved in a four-car crash that left one driver dead in Malibu Saturday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department.

Jenner was a driver in one of the cars, the Sheriff's Department said. His rep told ABC News that Jenner is fine.

Jenner cooperated with investigators, police said. He passed a field sobriety test and then voluntarily submitted a blood sample to determine whether he was intoxicated.

"He did not appear intoxicated or under the influence of anything at the time," Sheriff's Sgt. Philip Brooks said.

Adult ISIS Fighter in Child Executioner Video Killed, Official Says

Credit and Source:  ABC News
By James Gordon Meek and Lee Ferran, Jan. 28, 2015

A notorious ISIS fighter featured in the shocking video this month of a boy appearing to execute two prisoners with a handgun has been killed in battle, a counter-terrorism official said today.

Abu Saad al-Dagestani was the nom de guerre of an ISIS terrorist shown in the gruesome Jan. 13 tape overseeing what ISIS claimed was the execution of two alleged "Russian spies" by a boy under 11. Al-Dagestani was first reported killed in jihadi tweets on Jan. 15, which claimed he was "martyred" near the embattled Kurdish town of Kobani on Syria's border with Turkey.

"We do think he was killed," a counter-terrorism official familiar with military operations around Kobani by the U.S.-led coalition told ABC News today.

ISIS Video Claims to Show Child Executioner

The video, apparently produced by an ISIS media outlet and shared on Twitter, was seven minutes long and featured “confessions” by the two men. In a heavily-edited section, the boy, called a “lion’s cub,” was shown firing a pistol at the heads of the men, who each fall, apparently lifeless.

Feinstein Urges Changes To Avoid Repeat Of CIA Torture

Ken Dilanian, Jan. 5, 2015, AP

Feinstein said she will introduce legislation in the upcoming Congress to codify Obama's executive order banning torture and prohibiting the CIA from detaining prisoners.

Her office said she introduced similar legislation in 2009, but then began to focus on the investigation and wanted to wait for its outcome before pressing for changes.

"We didn't know then that the study would not be completed until the end of 2014, so we went down the track of the investigation with the idea that recommendations would follow from what we found," her top intelligence aide, David Grannis, said in an email.
