Toni Morrison: Racism Not Over Until Cops Shoot A White Unarmed Teenager

Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison argued recently that she wouldn’t consider racism in America as resolved until she sees a police officer shoot a white unarmed teenager in the back.

“People keep saying, ‘We need to have a conversation about race,” the 84-year-old told The Telegraph in an interview published Sunday.

“This is the conversation: I want to see a cop shoot a white unarmed teenager in the back,” Ms. Morrison said. “And I want to see a white man convicted for raping a black woman. Then when you ask me, ‘Is it over?’, I will say yes.”

She also spoke about the relationship between economics and racism.

“Race is the classification of a species,” she told The Telegraph. “And we are the human race, period. But the other thing — the hostility, the racism — is the money-maker. And it also has some emotional satisfaction for people who need it.

Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder said Saturday that it’s “tragic” Al Sharpton has such a strong influence in New York City, calling him an “inciter of mobs” ahead of a grand jury’s impending decision in the police chokehold death of Eric Garner.

“In my view, they should not be working with him,” Mr. Kinder told the New York Post as tensions simmered over a grand jury decision in Ferguson, Missouri, not to indict Officer Darren Wilson, who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown on Aug. 9. Mr. Sharpton was also a prominent voice amid the racial unrest there.

Iran Sentences Female Activist To Yr. In Prison For Attending Men's Volleyball Game

A British-Iranian activist detained in Iran while trying to attend a men’s volleyball game has been sentenced to one year in prison for “propagating against the ruling system,” her lawyer said Sunday.

Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25, was detained June 20 while trying to attend a World League match between Iran and Italy at a stadium in Tehran, BBC News reported.

Iran banned women from volleyball games in 2012, arguing that they need protection from the lewd behavior of male fans.

Ms. Ghavami, a former student of the University of London’s School of African and Oriental Studies, was detained initially for a few hours and released, only to be arrested again a few days later.

2nd Oklahoma Man Threatened To Behead Coworker, Police Say

A fired Oklahoma City nursing home employee was arrested Friday for allegedly threatening to behead a co-worker — less than 20 miles from where Alton Alexander Nolen is accused of beheading a co-worker the day before.

Jacob Mugambi Muriithi, 30, is being held in the Oklahoma County jail on a terrorism complaint. His bail is set at $1 million, The Oklahoman reported.

“We take these threats very seriously,” said Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater.

The arrest came on the same day police in Moore identified Vaughan Foods worker Alton Alexander Nolen as the suspect accused of beheading a co-worker Thursday after he was fired. Mr. Nolen is a Muslim convert and had recently started trying to convert several employees to Islam, police said.

Mr. Muriithi has been identified as a native of Kenya who worked at Bellevue Nursing Home in northwest Oklahoma City, The Oklahoman reported.

The co-worker, who was not identified, reported Mr. Muriithi threatened her while they were both working at the nursing home on Sept. 19. She said Mr. Muriithi called himself a Muslim and said Islamic State fighters beheading Christians “is just what we do.”

Canada Revokes Passports Of Citizens Who Join IS

The Canadian government has begun invalidating the passports of citizens who have left the country to join Islamic State fighters in Syria and Iraq, the National Post has revealed.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said his department had also revoked the passports of several Canadians who had not yet left the country but who had intended to enlist in the militant group, the paper reported.

Mr. Alexander would not disclose the number of passports that have been revoked but said there were “multiple cases.” The government says about 30 Canadians are with extremist groups in Syria and 130 are active elsewhere, the National Post reported.

“Yes, I think it’s safe to say that there are cases of revocation of passports involving people who’ve gone to Syria and Iraq already,” he said. “I just don’t want to get into the numbers, but multiple cases.”

The action means the Canadian fighters’ passports are no longer valid and cannot be used to return to Canada or travel elsewhere.

Hillary Clinton broke her silence on the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, on Thursday, arguing Americans “cannot ignore the inequities” in the criminal justice system.

“Imagine what we would feel, what we would do if white drivers were three times as likely to be searched by police at a traffic stop as black drivers, instead of the other way around,” she said in response to the racially charged unrest that unfolded in Ferguson after the Aug. 9 police shooting of an unarmed black teenager, Michael Brown, Time reported.

“If white offenders received prison sentences 10 percent longer than black offenders for the same crimes. If a third of all white men — just look at this room and take one third — went to prison during their lifetime. Imagine that. that is the reality in the lives of so many of our fellow Americans and so many of the communities in which they live,” she said during a paid speech in San Francisco.

Mrs. Clinton praised President Obama’s decision to send Attorney General Eric Holder to Ferguson for an investigation, which is “both appropriate and necessary to find out what happened, to see that justice is done, to help this community begin healing itself,” she said.
