Joe Biden Likely To Join 2016 White House Race Next Month, Top Fundraiser Says

Vice President Joseph R. Biden’s team is putting out the word that he is leaning in favor of joining the presidential race next month, according to a prominent Democratic fundraiser.

The veep’s entrance would dramatically shake up the Democratic contest, confronting front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton with a formidable opponent who is equally well-known across the country and poised to tap a network of major donors.

“They have given increasingly strong signals that Biden is going to throw his hat in the ring,” said New York businessman Jon Cooper, a top bundler for President Obama’s 2012 campaign who has been testing the waters with fellow bundlers for a Biden run.

“I’m as confident as I can be that he will be entering the race,” he said.

Mr. Biden had been noncommittal about his plans for next year, though he never ruled out another run for president.

Democrats Push For Senate Probe Of Racist Terrorism In U.S.

Senate Democrats on Tuesday demanded a probe of racist domestic terrorism in response the the deadly shooting this month at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina.

“What we saw in South Carolina is about hate, and it is about evil. We must address the reality of domestic terrorism spurred by racial hatred head on,” six Democratic senators said in a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican.

The senators, led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Judiciary Committee ranking member Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, said the church shooting appeared to also fit the U.S. Code’s definition of a terrorist attack, which describes terrorism as a criminal act dangerous to human life that is intended to “intimidate or coerce a civilian population” or “to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction [or] assassination.”

Sen. Ted Cruz delivered a full-throated critique Thursday of the Supreme Court, saying that it is clear that the “rogue justices” that ruled in favor of Obamacare subsidies are “lawless” political foot soldiers that have joined forces with the Obama administration.

Speaking on the Senate floor, the Texas Republican and 2016 GOP presidential candidate said that if the “justices want to become legislators, I invite them to resign and run for office.”

The remarks came shortly after the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Obama administration is lawfully doling out Obamacare’s subsidies in dozens of states despite contested language in the law that sparked a legal battle with major political and economic ramifications.

Obama Extending Amnesty To Illegals In Prisons, Jails

The administration has ordered agents to begin ignoring many of the illegal immigrants they encounter in prisons and jails, as President Obama begins to implement a lesser-known part of his deportation amnesty policy — though his program isn’t sitting well with either side of the immigration debate.

In a nod to so-called sanctuary cities, the president’s policy prohibits U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from targeting most illegal immigrants for deportation, including most of those who come into contact with state and local police.

Agents can still troll jails and prisons, but are told to no longer go after illegal immigrants with offenses such as drug possession, theft or fraud if it involved stealing an identity to try to further their unlawful presences in the U.S., according to details of the policy released Tuesday by the House Judiciary Committee.

Even some illegal immigrants who are charged with serious felonies but are released by local authorities won’t be picked up by immigration agents until they are convicted, the committee said.

Democrats Use Confederate Flag Flap In South Carolina To Solicit Donations

National Democrats tried Monday evening to raise funds off the South Carolina Confederate flag flap.

In a blast email sent after 7 p.m. Monday, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said the issue of the Confederate flag, which zoomed to the front of national consciousness after a white supremacist was charged with nine counts of murder after a shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, was “not over yet.”

The email says Gov. Nikki Haley’s announcement is not legislation and asked recipients to answer the question, “Should South Carolina take down the Confederate flag from its state Capitol?”

It reads, “41,338 people have recorded their answer — but we still haven’t heard from you,” it asks the subscriber by name.

A person cannot answer the survey question at the DCCC site without putting in an email address, which gives the DCCC the ability to solicit contributions.

Once the person answers the question and provides an address, the page reads, “Thanks for taking the instant poll today! Now take the next step: Donate $3 or more to support Democrats, and we’ll send you this free ‘Yes. I Voted Obama’ sticker in the mail!”

Retired neurosurgeon and Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson took to Facebook Thursday to express his condolences to the families of the nine church congregants shot and killed by a deranged gunman in Charleston, South Carolina.

“Last night evil walked the streets of Charleston. My heart aches for the families of the victims. I pray for the families left behind,” he wrote. “I pray for the community scared and hurting. I also pray you and I can conquer hatred.

“In my lifetime I have seen such great progress. Though racial based hate is still very much alive as last night so violently reminded us,” Mr. Carson continued. “But I worry about a new hate that is growing in our great nation. I fear our intolerance of one another is the new battle ground of evil. Today many feel it is OK to hate someone who thinks differently than you do.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Black community activists raised alarms Thursday about the mass murder at the historic black church potentially sparking race riots in Charleston, South Carolina.

“We don’t need any more bloodshed and we don’t need a race war,” pleaded J. Denise Cromwell, a black community activists. “Charleston has a lot of racial tension. … We’re drowning and someone is pouring water over us.”

Ms. Cromwell said that nerves were still raw from the fatal shooting two months ago of a black man, Walter Scott, by a white police officer in neighboring North Charleston, which ignited major protests.

The chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee is telling Pope Francis to stay out of the ongoing debate over global warming.

“Everyone is going to ride the pope now. Isn’t that wonderful,” Sen. James Inhofe, Oklahoma Republican, said Thursday, according to the Guardian. “The pope ought to stay with his job, and we’ll stay with ours.”

A few moments later, Mr. Inhofe said: “I am not going to talk about the pope. Let him run his shop, and we’ll run ours.”

Mr. Inhofe is one of the leading global warming skeptics on Capitol Hill, bringing a snowball onto the floor of the United States Senate earlier this year to make his point.

Police advocates say “cellphone vigilantes” are popping up at various crime scenes and disturbances across the nation to capture short clips of high-tension moments, snippets that typically lack context and damage not only police-community relationships but the chance for cops to be treated fairly in the court of public opinion.

Law enforcement officers should be allowed to understand, explain and investigate a situation before it becomes a YouTube sensation, said Don Mihalek, the legislative director of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, who says the ubiquity of cellphones presents a major challenge.

“Clearly there’s an uptick in that behavior, and it comes down to a few things,” Mr. Mihalek said. “No. 1, just the number of cellphones out there. That’s just the genie that’s out of the bottle that we’ll never get back. The second thing is, the younger generation is very tech-savvy and capturing a video and uploading it is almost like sleeping and eating these days.”

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s efforts to provide favors to major donors to her husband’s global charity or her own political career stretch back far earlier than her tenure as America’s top diplomat, dating to the time she served as a U.S. senator and had the power to earmark federal funds and influence legislation, records show.

For instance, Mrs. Clinton introduced a bill when she was New York’s junior senator that allowed a donor to the Clinton Foundation to use tax-exempt bonds to build a shopping center in Syracuse, New York, public records show.

She also went to bat for Freddie Mac, working to defeat legislation that would have subjected the mortgage giant to tougher regulations before the housing bubble burst and led to a major recession. That same year, Freddie Mac donated $50,000 to $100,000 to her husband’s charity, originally called the William J. Clinton Foundation records show.

A married Army general on Tuesday introduced his spouse at a Pentagon event that featured lots of top brass, including Defense Secretary Ashton Carter as the keynote speaker.

What made this seemingly routine introduction noteworthy is that Brig. Gen. Randy S. Taylor introduced his husband, Lucas.

“My husband Lucas is sitting up front here,” Gen. Taylor said of the man in the same row as Mr. Carter, Army Secretary John McHugh and other senior officials. He said Lucas has subjugated his own career to support the general’s frequent moves over an 18-year relationship.

“We bet everything on my Army career,” said Gen. Taylor, whose 27 years of service spanned an outright ban on gays, then “don’t ask, don’t tell” and finally, the ban’s lifting in 2011.

Former President Jimmy Carter told AARP Bulletin during a recent interview that many Americans hold “feelings of superiority” toward minorities.

Mr. Carter spoke on a range of subjects with the magazine, including campaign spending and lobbyists, but he made a point to say that the U.S. still is lacking in terms of safeguarding civil rights.

“The recent publicity about mistreatment of black people in the judicial and police realm has been a reminder that the dreams of the civil rights movement have not been realized. […] Many Americans still have racist tendencies or feelings of superiority to people of color,” Mr. Carter told AARP Bulletin, The Hill reported Thursday.

The former president added that the politics of the 1970s have changed in such a way that he would not get the level Republican support he enjoyed as the 39th president.

“There was harmony among congressmen when I was there, and I got just as much support from Republicans as I did from Democrats. I can’t imagine myself as a successful candidate today,” Mr. Carter said, The Hill reported.

IRS Confirms Illegals Can Get Back-Taxes Under Obama Amnesty

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen has confirmed to Congress that illegal immigrants granted amnesty under President Obama’s new programs could claim back refunds even when they never filed returns to pay their taxes in the first place.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, who had pressed Mr. Koskinen over the issue, released written responses Wednesday in which the commissioner admitted he’d botched the question earlier and, in fact, illegal immigrants granted the amnesty will now be able to claim refunds on tax returns they never even filed, thanks to the Earned Income Tax Credit.

“To clarify my earlier comments on EITC, not only can an individual amend a prior year return to claim EITC, but an individual who did not file a prior year return may file a return and claim EITC (subject to refund limitations under section 6511 of the Internal Revenue Code),” Mr. Koskinen said.

He insisted, however, that he doubts many illegal immigrants will take advantage of the loophole because they would have to be able to prove their earnings for those years they never filed returns.

A year after the scandal over phony wait times at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs hospital exposed widespread problems in the agency nationwide, employees say troubles at the Arizona facility are still rampant, including whistleblower retaliation, neglect of suicidal veterans and suspected fraud in overtime pay.

The top financial officer at the Phoenix VA has filed a lawsuit claiming that other administrators there orchestrated an unlawful search of her office and accused her of sexual misconduct after she blew the whistle about mismanagement. She said the stressful work atmosphere led her to overdose on painkillers.

Internal VA emails obtained by The Washington Times indicate that top administrators in Phoenix were aware of potential fraud involving exorbitant overtime pay for a 75-year-old suicide prevention counselor who was billing the agency for as much as 55 hours of overtime per pay period, sometimes while he was supposedly working at separate locations at the same time. The questions of suspected fraud and unsafe patient care have attracted the attention of investigators on the staff of Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican.

The Reverend Al Sharpton used this week’s deadly flooding in Texas to ask his radio show listeners if the rains were due to “climate control or is it God’s rebuke?”

At least 17 people died and 40 people are missing after rains that swept through Texas and Oklahoma. Flash flooding damaged over 2,000 vehicles and at least 500 water rescues were needed in the Houston area. Roughly 4,000 structures were damaged in Houston.

One of Mr. Sharpton’s “Keeping it Real with Al Sharpton” listeners said Wednesday that God will “come like a thief in the night” to teach humanity a lesson, but Twitter feedback was resoundingly negative.

“So @TheRevAl Are you saying you think #Katrina was “God’s Rebuke” too?” one user asked, Mediaite reported Wednesday.

Another responded “I’m sure the media who denounce Pat Robertson for claiming disasters are divine punishment will jump right on this.”

Conservative commentator and author Jonah Goldberg tweeted “I thought I knew what ‘Keeping it Real’ meant. Now I’m not so sure.”

New York City lawyers have ordered Rev. Al Sharpton’s daughter Dominique not to delete Instagram photos of her recent hiking trip in Indonesia. Ms. Sharpton has filed a $5 million lawsuit against the city for “permanent” injuries she claims are attributable to falling on an uneven sidewalk.

The city Law Department sent Ms. Sharpton a letter telling her to preserve all of the evidence posted on her social-media accounts, the New York Post reported Saturday.

Ms. Sharpton, 28, filed a lawsuit suing the city for $5 million on May 7 claiming that she will never fully recover from a sprained ankle she suffered when she tripped on an uneven Soho street on October 2.

Al Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden spent his final years pleading with followers to stay focused on the goal of large-scale attacks against Americans, and avoid getting sucked into the regional wars and Muslim-on-Muslim violence that have come to define so much of the global jihadi narrative since his death.

While U.S. intelligence officials say the trove of bin Laden files declassified Wednesday represent only a fraction of what Navy SEALs retrieved from the terror leader’s Pakistan lair in 2011, the documents appear to show a terrorist leader so isolated in hiding that he was losing control of his flock.

Letters and memos show bin Laden pushing back against jihadi offshoots impatient to form an Islamic state and warning that small wars to topple governments in the Middle East would distract from the big-picture goal — striking the United States.

With word emerging today that ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos gave “$50,001 to $100,000” to the Clinton Foundation, the network will soon face the Brian Williams Quandary — is its top “newsman” trustworthy when delivering news.

Stephanopoulos only disclosed the donations to the nonprofit when asked about them by a reporter from the Free Beacon (choosing to control the story through a statement to friendly liberal outlet, Politico).

In dozens and dozens of stories and interviews on the Clintons, the chief anchor never mentioned his hefty gifts. In fact, he fiercely questioned author Peter Schweizer last month about his book “Clinton Cash,” making unilateral statements that the book was hogwash.

“As you know, the Clinton campaign says you haven’t produced a shred of evidence that there was any official action as secretary that supported the interest of donors,” Stephanopoulos said. “We’ve done investigative work here at ABC News, found no proof of any kind of direct action. And an independent government ethics expert at the Sunlight Foundation Bill Allison wrote this: ‘There’s no smoking gun. No evidence that the changed policy is based on donations to the foundation. No smoking gun.’ Is there a smoking gun?”

Senate Democrats filibustered Tuesday to stop the first major free trade deal vote in years, administering an embarrassing setback to President Obama, who had pleaded with his own party to back him on his top domestic priority for his final years in office.

White House officials described the filibuster as a “snafu” and vowed Mr. Obama would prevail eventually, but the vote — which saw all but one Senate Democrat desert the president’s stance — quickly poisoned the atmosphere on Capitol Hill, where Republicans accused free trade Democrats of reneging on an agreement to at least begin the debate.

The president sent an email to his millions-long list of campaign supporters, pleading with them to trust him and embrace free trade, saying the fight has become “personal for me.”

“The Clintons” is the longest-running soap opera in American politics. Bill and Hillary have seemed to be immune from the accountability demanded of others. Perhaps they’re protected by scandal because scandal is what everyone expects from them. This defense will be put to the test when a judgment day, such as it may be, arrives the week of May 18 and she will be asked to answer questions from Congress about what happened at Benghazi, and her part in organizing the American response.

She will be asked to explain why she deleted thousands of official State Department emails as well, since critical information about Benghazi may have disappeared in her electronic purge. If she tells Congress, and the nation, that they’ll just have to take her word that everything was kosher, she will put her presidential aspirations at risk.

Mrs. Clinton has been the focus of congressional scrutiny because four Americans were killed when Islamic terrorists attacked the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012. She was their boss, responsible for their safety. Congress has been trying to get answers since, and the best that she has provided is a remarkable outburst at a Senate hearing in 2013: “What difference, at this point, does it make?” This outburst, cold and insensitive, will be her legacy unless she comes up with something better.
