Baltimore Killings Soar To A Level Unseen In 43 years

By Juliet Linderman, July 31, 2015 AP

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore reached a grim milestone on Friday, three months after riots erupted in response to the death of Freddie Gray in police custody: With 45 homicides in July, the city has seen more bloodshed in a single month than it has in 43 years.

Police reported three deaths — two men shot Thursday and one on Friday. The men died at local hospitals.

With their deaths, this year's homicides reached 189, far outpacing the 119 killings by July's end in 2014. Nonfatal shootings have soared to 366, compared to 200 by the same date last year. July's total was the worst since the city recorded 45 killings in August 1972, according to The Baltimore Sun.

The seemingly Sisyphean task of containing the city's violence prompted Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to fire her police commissioner, Anthony Batts, on July 8.

Baltimore Gets Bloodier As Arrests Drop Post-Freddie Gray

By Juliet Linderman, May 28, 2015, ABC News/AP

A 31-year-old woman and a young boy were shot in the head Thursday, becoming Baltimore's 37th and 38th homicide victims so far this month, the city's deadliest in 15 years.

The most recent killings claimed the lives of Jennifer Jeffrey and her 7-year-old son, Kester Anthony Browne. They were identified by Jeffrey's sister, Danielle Wilder.

Jeffrey and her son were found dead early Thursday, each from gunshot wounds to the head.

As family members cried and held each other on the quiet, leafy block in Southwest Baltimore where they lived, Wilder said she felt as if "my heart has been ripped out."

Wilder said a neighbor called their other sister early Thursday, concerned that she hadn't heard any noise coming from Jeffrey's house: no footsteps, Wilder said, no voices, and no gunshots. But when her brother let himself into the house to check on the mother and son, he discovered their bodies.

"She was in the living room," Wilder said. "The baby was upstairs, in the bed."

Baltimore Police Union: Cops More Afraid Of Going To Jail Than Getting Shot

By Colin Campbell, May 28, 2015, The Baltimore Sun

The president of the Baltimore police union on Thursday said that criminals have become "empowered" following the recent unrest and that, with six officers charged in Freddie Gray's death, city police are more "afraid" of being arrested than shot on duty.

Gray, 25, died a week after suffering a severed spinal cord and other injuries in police custody. His death led to more than a week of protests and later rioting, that prompted a citywide curfew and the deployment of the National Guard.

"The criminals are taking advantage of the situation in Baltimore since the unrest," said Gene Ryan, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3. "Criminals feel empowered now. There is no respect. Police are under siege in every quarter. They are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly than they are of getting shot on duty."
cComments

Clearly the police are pouting a bit, but can you blame them? That is a dangerous-ass city to patrol, irrespective of the political climate. Now they feel resentment from the public they protect and abandoned by slimy politicians. Hard to keep your game face on under those circumstances.

The union released the statement on Twitter a day after the officers charged in Gray's death filed a motion to have the trial moved out of Baltimore. Police commissioner Anthony W. Batts apologized to the union Monday night for putting officers in harm's way.

Jay Z Under Fire by Black Scholar for ‘Pulling Out the Race Card’ in Tidal Debate

By Anita Bennett, May 21, 2105, The Wrap

Dr. Boyce D. Watkins tells TheWrap he takes issue with music mogul “invoking the names of Freddie Gray, Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown” in freestyle rap

Jay Z’s got 99 problems and his freestyle is one.

On Saturday at his closely-watched “B-sides” concert — which ran exclusively on the hip-hop mogul’s music streaming service Tidal — Jay Z responded to critics with a sharply-worded freestyle rap. During one verse, he connected Tidal’s troubles with the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown and Freddie Gray — unarmed African-American men whose tragic deaths made international headlines.

“You know when I work, I ain’t your slave, right? You know I ain’t shucking and jiving and high-fiving, and you know this ain’t back in the days, right? Well I can’t tell how the way they killed Freddie Gray, right? Shot down Mike Brown how they did Tray, right?” the rap legend said.

Baltimore Prosecutors In Freddie Gray Case Seek Gag Order

By Associated Press, May 16, 2015

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore prosecutors are seeking a gag order as they pursue a criminal case against six city officers in the case of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old man who died a week after suffering a spinal injury while in police custody.

A court document that references the gag order, obtained by The Associated Press, is dated Wednesday. Assistant State's Attorney Antonio Gioia wrote that the gag order motion was mailed to defense attorneys.

Rochelle Ritchie, a spokeswoman for State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby, confirmed Friday the office is seeking a gag order. She declined to provide further details.

A gag order typically prevents attorneys and witnesses from publicly commenting on or releasing information about a particular case.

Mosby announced the charges, which range from second-degree misdemeanor assault to "depraved-heart" murder, in a lengthy news conference one day after receiving an investigative report from police. The May 1 announcement came after more than a week of protests that on two occasions gave way to rioting, prompting Democratic Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to implement a curfew and Republican Gov. Larry Hogan to declare a state of emergency for the city.

Reuters/Jim Bourg
By Larry Elder, May 7, 2015

After the mysterious death of suspect Freddie Gray, the Maryland state's attorney for Baltimore charged all six Baltimore police officers involved with his arrest and transport. The crimes ranging from "second-degree depraved-heart murder" to involuntary manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. Locals cheered her decision to charge all six. The charges followed three days of riots triggered by Gray's funeral and came almost immediately after the medical examiner filed his report calling Gray's death a "homicide."

Now for the hard part.

Not only will the charges be difficult to prove but three of those charged are black. The claim of illegal "racial profiling" argues that white racist officers possess an unwarranted fear of young black men. But what happens to that analysis when the accused officers are black? If black cops are just as likely to engage in race-based misconduct, why did Ferguson demonstrators demand a "diverse" police force?

If the Ferguson outrage and riots were about "lack of representation" or "lack of voice," this cannot be said about Baltimore. The city council is majority black, the police department is approximately 40 percent black, the top two officials running the department are black men, the city has a black mayor, the state's attorney for Baltimore City -- who charged the six officers -- is black, the new U.S. attorney general is a black female, and of course the President of the United States is black.

The left has created a culture of anger and entitlement based upon government dependency and the false assertion that racism remains a major problem. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., for example, said that the recent police killings mean "open season on black men in America." The Baltimore mayor's shameful embrace of the Rev. Al Sharpton, the race-hustling incendiary who demanded an arrest of Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, did not help matters. Some actually believe this tripe about "institutional racism." Of those, how many rioted over Freddie Gray's "murder," no matter the race of the mayor?

Police shootings over the last several decades are down. Cop shootings of blacks are down more than 75 percent over the last 45 years, while the death-by-cop rate for whites has increased slightly. According to the CDC -- which tracks all causes of death, including shootings by law enforcement -- over twice as many whites are killed by police as are blacks.

Police "profile" because out of a relatively small percentage of the population come more than 50 percent of homicides and 40 percent of the people behind bars. Blacks are 13 percent of the population, but young blacks -- the category that disproportionately commits crime -- are 3 percent of the population.

Speaking of "root causes," Baltimore has not had a Republican mayor since 1967. So why haven't the Democrats addressed the "root causes"? In 1992, then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton blamed the "Rodney King riots" in Los Angeles on "12 years of denial and neglect" under the Reagan/Bush presidencies. Can we similarly attribute Baltimore's riots to six years of Obama's "progressive" policies?

Baltimore, Democrats say, needs a "new Marshall plan." But, according to the Heritage Foundation, we have spent over $22 trillion on anti-poverty programs. On education in Baltimore, in 2012 (the latest year available), they spent $15,287 per student. Yet almost half of urban Baltimoreans fail to graduate high school, and of those who do, many cannot read write and compute at grade level. Spend more?

In 1965, 25 percent of black kids were born out of wedlock. Today that number is up to 72 percent. Obama said that a kid without a father is 20 times more likely to go to jail. Blame the welfare state that incentivizes women into marrying the government.

Last year 189 blacks were killed in Baltimore. Where were CNN and President Barack Obama and then-Attorney General Eric Holder and Sharpton? Chicago averages 35 to 40 murders per month, the majority by and against blacks -- and most remain unsolved. Where are CNN/Obama/Holder/Sharpton?

Obama has now misfired in at least four "racial" matters: the Cambridge police/Harvard professor incident; Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman; Michael Brown/Darren Wilson; and now Baltimore.

Obama's claimed the "Cambridge police acted stupidly" in arresting black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., who falsely and belligerently accused a white officer of racial profiling.

In the case of Trayvon Martin, Obama said, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon." But the jury found Zimmerman not only not guilty, but jurors later said that during their deliberations race never came up.

In the case of Ferguson, the Department of Justice found that Michael Brown very likely did not have his hands up and that the cop acted appropriately when he killed Brown, a charging suspect who posed a risk of death or serious injury.

Who would've thought that after the election and reelection of the nation's first black president, we'd see race riots in our nation's cities? Baltimore is what happens at the intersection of the grievance culture and the welfare state.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch Meets Freddie Gray's Family

Credit: Lloyd Fox, Baltimore Sun
By Alison Knezevich and Mark Puente, May 5, 2015, The Baltimore Sun

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Tuesday that the Justice Department will examine the best options to improve the Baltimore Police Department in the aftermath of Freddie Gray's death, and a full-scale civil rights investigation has not been ruled out.

After meeting with elected leaders, clergy and activists at four locations in Baltimore, Lynch said the city has come to symbolize police and community mistrust — an issue that plagues many cities across America.

"We're going to try to come up with solutions, real solutions for the city of Baltimore to improve this city," Lynch said. "That is our goal. That is our commitment. It is my commitment on behalf of the Department of Justice."

Lynch's visit comes four days after Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby announced criminal charges against six officers involved in Gray's arrest and transport. He died April 19 — one week after suffering a spinal injury while in police custody.

Freddie Gray Protest Update: Al Sharpton Thanks Mosby For Police Arrests; Announces He'll Lead March

By Dennis Lynch, May 2, 2015, IBTimes.com

The Rev. Al Sharpton announced Saturday a march to Washington from Baltimore would be held this month while saying he was thankful for the arrests of the six police officers charged with involvement in the death of the African-American man Freddie Gray, 25, who suffered a fatal injury while in their custody. The civil-rights activist also urged the adoption of a federal law that would require all police officers in the U.S. to wear body cameras to “protect both the citizens and the officers” in a speech at the headquarters of his National Action Network (NAN) in New York.

Sharpton discussed the important roles amateur videos have played in recent police incidents in providing immutable evidence of police misconduct. “They would have called Eric Garner a liar if it weren’t for that video. They would have called Walter Scott a liar if it weren’t for that video. These six officers would not have been charged if it weren’t for that video,” he said. “The only [person] that doesn’t want a camera is someone that has something to hide.”

Garner and Scott were both killed during confrontations with police, with videos of their deaths uploaded to various websites and viewed millions of times. Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, and his widow, Esaw Garner, were in attendance Saturday, NAN said in a statement.

Freddie Gray suffered fatal 'injury when he fell head first in police van'

By Mia De Graaf, May 1, 2015, DailyMail.co.uk

An investigation has concluded Freddie Gray broke his neck after falling head-first into the back of the police van as it was moving, it was reported today.

Medical and law enforcement sources briefed on the police investigation told ABC News Gray's 'catastrophic' head injuries were consistent with hitting a bolt 'in the back door of the van'.

They claimed there was 'no evidence' Gray sustained a fatal spine injury during his arrest, which was caught on camera on a street side on April 12.

According to ABC's sources, Gray was standing in the van, bent over with his hand cuffed behind his back and his head pointing towards the back door.

It is believed he fell into the door, breaking his neck.

Cummings Promises Justice For Freddie Gray In Fiery Comments At Funeral

By Ben Kamisar, Apr. 27, 2015, TheHill.com

“I’ve often said that our children are the living messages we send to the future we will never see, but now, our children are sending us to a future they will never see,” Cummings said during an emotional and fiery speech at Freddie Gray’s funeral.

“There is something wrong with that picture,” he said with a slight tremor in his voice.

“I’m in the twilight years, but I am telling you we will not rest we will not rest until we address this and see that justice is done,” he said, addressing Gray’s mother.

“Look at ‘em, mother. We will not rest. So it is our watch, it’s our watch. We will not fail you.”

Cummings asked all of the lawmakers in the church to stand up to show Gray’s mother that they would seek justice for her son.

The longtime Baltimore lawmaker also noted the presence of a number of media organizations at the crowded funeral.

“As I thought about the cameras,” Cummings said, “I wondered: Did anybody recognize Freddie when he was alive?”

The Other Man In The Van With Freddie Gray Breaks His Silence

Source:  Newsweek
By CBS Baltimore, Apr. 30, 2015

BALTIMORE (WJZ ) — From the beginning, the investigation into what killed Freddie Gray has centered on what happened inside the police transport van.

We knew there was another prisoner inside the van and tonight we hear from him.

WJZ‘s Mike Schuh is the first to speak with Donta Allen about what he heard.

“I am Donta Allen. I am the one who was in the van with Freddie Gray,” Allen said.

The one who the police commissioner calls the second prisoner in the van.

“The second prisoner who was picked up said that he didn’t see any harm done to Freddie at all,” Commissioner Anthony Batts said. “What he has said is that he heard Freddie thrashing about.”

But Allen wants to set something straight.

“All I did was go straight to the station, but I heard a little banging like he was banging his head,” he said.
