Is Barack Obama's Life Safe In The Secret Service's Hands?

A knife-wielding intruder allowed to run rampant through the first floor of the White House. Bullets that struck the window of Barack Obama's private residence but went unnoticed for days. A presidential bodyguard so drunk he passed out in hallway of a hotel.

These are just some of the recent incidents that have shaken confidence in the Secret Service, the elite agency assigned to protect Mr Obama, his family and the White House.

On Tuesday, Julia Pierson, the Secret Service's director, will face a grilling from members of Congress and a battle to convince them that her agents are up to the task of protecting the world's most powerful man.

The hearing was called after a September 19 incident, when the Secret Service allowed Omar Gonzales, a troubled Iraq war veteran, to scale the White House fence and go through the unlocked front door of the executive mansion.

Obama Silent On Amnesty in Address to Congressional Black Caucus Dinner

By Tony Lee, Sept. 28, 2014, Breitbart.com

Weeks before he will reportedly enact a massive executive amnesty for illegal immigrants, President Barack Obama was silent on immigration when he addressed the Congressional Black Caucus' Phoenix Awards Dinner on Saturday evening in Washington, D.C.

Critics of amnesty, like U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner Peter Kirsanow, have warned that granting work permits to millions of more illegal immigrants would have a disparate impact on black workers trying to move up the economic ladder. The black unemployment rate is 11.2%, and a record number of blacks are not even in the workforce.

Like former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Obama conceded that Americans of all races and backgrounds have been struggling in his economy.

"Our work is not done when working Americans of all races have seen their wages and incomes stagnate, even as corporate profits soar; when African-American unemployment is still twice as high as white unemployment; when income inequality, on the rise for decades, continues to hold back hardworking communities, especially communities of color," Obama told the audience. "We’ve got unfinished work. And we know what to do. That’s the worst part--we know what to do."

Swiss Voters Turn Down State-Run Health Insurance

By Washington Free Beacon Staff, Sept. 30, 2014, Freebeacon.com

On Sunday, Swiss voters rejected a plan to get rid of the country’s private health insurance system in favor of a state-run plan, the AFP reported.

Some 64 percent of the electorate shot down a plan pushed by left-leaning parties who say the current system is busting the budgets of ordinary residents, figures from polling agency gfs.bern showed.

The rejection of the plan by nearly two-thirds of voters is a major blow for pro-reform campaigners, given that recent polls had shown the No vote was likely to be 54 percent. In a 2007 referendum, 71 percent rejected similar reforms.

The country’s health care system has been lauded for its efficiency, and other countries have modeled their own systems after it. Costs have been on the rise in Switzerland, however, leading to the proposed change.

“Over the past 20 years in Switzerland, health costs have grown 80 percent and insurance premiums 125 percent,” ophthalmologist Michel Matter said. Matter heads the Geneva Physicians Association, which has called to get rid of the current system.

“This is not possible anymore. It has to change,” Matter said.

White House Intruder Was Tackled By Off-Duty Secret Service

By Carol D. Leonning, Sept. 30, 2014, Washingtonpost.com

The man who jumped over the White House fence and sprinted through the main floor of the mansion could have gotten even farther had it not been for an off-duty Secret Service agent who was coincidentally in the house and leaving for the night.

The agent who finally tackled Omar Gonzalez had been serving on the security detail for President Obama’s daughters and had just seen the family depart via helicopter minutes earlier. He happened to be walking through the house when chaos broke out and the intruder dashed through the main foyer, according to two people familiar with the incident.

Gonzalez, 42, was the first person in modern memory to jump over the White House fence and get into the mansion, largely the result of a failure of numerous layers of Secret Service security on the northern fence line.

Though the Secret Service initially said that Gonzalez was quickly detained inside the front door, The Washington Post reported Monday that the man actually made it well into the house before he was tackled on the far southern side of the 80-foot-long East Room. Once he burst inside the unlocked front door, Gonzalez, an Army veteran, overpowered one Secret Service officer and, on his journey, sprinted past a stairway that leads up half a flight to the first family’s living quarters.

Data Divulges Racial Disparity In Chicago’s Issuance Of Gun Permits

By Kelly Riddell, Sept. 29, 2014, Washingtontimes.com

In Chicago’s South Side earlier this month, a 16-year-old boy was shot dead, the seventh person killed this year in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

The boy was able to give his name and reportedly pleaded with the responding police officers, “Please don’t let me die.”

If you live in 60624, the ZIP code where the shooting took place, you don’t expect your streets to be safe. In the last 30 days, that neighborhood has recorded more homicides, robberies, assaults, thefts and narcotics charges combined than any other ZIP code in Cook County when measured on a per capita basis. Its population is 98 percent black and averages a median income just above the poverty line.

How To Kill Hotel Jobs In L.A.

By Christopher Thronberg, Sept. 29, 2014, Latimes.com

Last week, members of the Los Angeles City Council voted to increase the minimum wage for hotel workers within the city to $15.37 per hour by next year. Why? You'd have to ask them.

A study they commissioned me to do on the subject — then seemingly ignored — raised serious questions about the wisdom of the measure.

Months ago, the City Council asked three analysts to look at the proposed wage hike. One was decidedly pro-labor, one decidedly pro-business. My firm, Beacon Economics, was the third, selected with the approval of both business and labor groups. We had no preconceived ideas about the proposal; we merely agreed to analyze the available data and see if conclusions could be drawn.

But the City Council never seemed interested in really examining the potential economic consequences of the ordinance. We got our instructions about what questions to address just two weeks before the vote, and we were surprised to learn that the council intended to vote on the day after we turned in our final analysis, which suggests none of the members spent time looking at our findings.

That's unfortunate, because the results strongly suggest that such a steep increase in the minimum wage could result in a sharp decline in the number of jobs in the hotel industry. And that kind of job loss could mean that as many workers would be hurt by the law as would be helped by higher wages.

Exclusive: America’s Allies Almost Bombed In Syrian Airstrikes

F-4 Phantom / U.S. Air Force
By Josh Rogin, Sept. 30, 2014, Thedailybeast.com

The White House says it wants to work with Syria’s moderate rebels. But warplanes from the U.S.-led coalition came awfully close to striking one of their HQs.

Last week, an airstrike from the American-led coalition nearly hit a command-and-control facility affiliated with the Free Syrian Army, the moderate rebels the Obama administration says are America’s “boots on the ground,” according to two opposition leaders. They are asking the Obama administration to please coordinate with them in the future before America bombs its only allies in Syria.

Since U.S. airstrikes against ISIS in Syria began on Sept. 22, there has been no coordination between the U.S. military and its alleged partners on the ground, according to FSA leaders, civilian opposition leaders, and intelligence sources who have been briefed on the U.S. and allied military operation. It’s this lack of communication that led to an airstrike that hit only 200 meters from an FSA facility in the suburbs of Idlib. One source briefed on the incident said multiple FSA fighters were killed in the attack.

“Unfortunately, there is zero coordination with the Free Syrian Army. Because there is no coordination, we are seeing civilian casualties. Because there is no coordination, they are hitting empty buildings for ISIS,” Hussam Al Marie, the spokesman for the FSA in northern Syria, told The Daily Beast.

New Sex Rules For California College Students Are Long Overdue

By Robin Abcarian, Sept. 30, 2014, Latimes.com

Last Thursday around 10 p.m., 21-year-old Sofie Karasek stood outside a frat house near the UC Berkeley campus, doing her part to prevent rape and sexual assault.

Karasek, a senior who is majoring in political economy, wasn't haranguing or protesting. She was conducting what she described as a "mini consent workshop." Before students were allowed to enter the party, which was thrown by campus Democrats, they first had to listen to her spiel.

“Cal Dems is working to create a culture of consent at our party tonight!” she told would-be partiers. “What does consent meant to you?”

“What are some ways to ask for consent?” she pressed. “What do you need consent for?”
You wanna have sex with somebody, you better make sure he or she wants to have sex with you. Only yes means yes.-

A conversation like that could suck the fun right out of a college party, but Karasek told me it had the opposite effect. Last spring, when someone stopped her outside a student co-op party and asked similar questions, she said, “I felt so much more comfortable once I went inside.”

Karasek was thrilled Monday, when Gov. Jerry Brown signed a first-in-the-nation law that requires California colleges and universities to develop new standards for defining and preventing sexual assault. One of the important goals of the new law is to make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to giving consent for sex. The old slogan "no means no" has been retired in favor of "yes means yes."

Translated, it’s fairly simple: You wanna have sex with somebody, you better make sure he or she wants to have sex with you. If that someone does not say “no”, it does not mean he or she said “yes.” Only yes means yes.

Report: Obama Has Missed Over Half His Second-Term Daily Intel Briefings

By Wynton Hall, Sept. 29, 2014, Breitbart.com

A new Government Accountability Institute (GAI)report reveals that President Barack Obama has attended only 42.1% of his daily intelligence briefings (known officially as the Presidential Daily Brief, or PDB) in the 2,079 days of his presidency through September 29, 2014.

The GAI report also included a breakdown of Obama’s PDB attendance record between terms; he attended 42.4% of his PDBs in his first term and 41.3% in his second.

The GAI’s alarming findings come on the heels of Obama’s 60 Minutes comments on Sunday, wherein the president laid the blame for the Islamic State’s (ISIS) rapid rise squarely at the feet of his Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

“I think our head of the intelligence community, Jim Clapper, has acknowledged that I think they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria,” said Obama.

According to Daily Beast reporter Eli Lake, members of the Defense establishment were “flabbergasted” by Obama’s attempt to shift blame.

“Either the president doesn’t read the intelligence he’s getting or he’s bullshitting,” a former senior Pentagon official “who worked closely on the threat posed by Sunni jihadists in Syria and Iraq” told the Daily Beast.

Why Obama Can’t Say His Spies Underestimated ISIS

Steve Kroft interviews President Obama
60 Minutes / CBS
By Eli Lake, Sept. 28, 2014, Thedailybeast.com

On 60 Minutes, the president faulted his spies for failing to predict the rise of ISIS. There’s one problem with that statement: The intelligence analysts did warn about the group.

Nearly eight months ago, some of President Obama’s senior intelligence officials were already warning that ISIS was on the move. In the beginning of 2014, ISIS fighters had defeated Iraqi forces in Fallujah, leading much of the U.S. intelligence community to assess they would try to take more of Iraq.

But in an interview that aired Sunday evening, the president told 60 Minutes that the rise of the group now proclaiming itself a caliphate in territory between Syria and Iraq caught the U.S. intelligence community off guard. Obama specifically blamed James Clapper, the current director of national intelligence: “Our head of the intelligence community, Jim Clapper, has acknowledged that, I think, they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria,” he said.

Reached by The Daily Beast after Obama’s interview aired, one former senior Pentagon official who worked closely on the threat posed by Sunni jihadists in Syria and Iraq was flabbergasted. “Either the president doesn’t read the intelligence he’s getting or he’s bullshitting,” the former official said.

Powder Cocaine Dealers Are No Longer Special Under the Law (Sorry)

By Dennis Romero, Sept. 29, 2014, Laweekly.com

Used to be that being successfully prosecuted for holding a decent quantity of crack could put you behind bars for up to five years.

No longer. California Gov. Jerry Brown last night signed a bill that will make possession of crack and possession of powder cocaine for sale the same crime, both worth two to four years in state prison.

That's no walk in the park, but drug decriminalization proponents are hailing the new law as one giant step for justice. Here's why:

Critics have long said that longer sentences for crack possession discriminate against African Americans and other people of color because the "rock" form of the drug is more prevalent in minority communities.

At the same time, white folks, who appear to prefer the powder form, have received lower sentences. It's called sentencing disparity. And whites are much less likely to be arrested for drugs in the first place, despite greater use rates.

The Drug Policy Alliance says a whopping 98 percent of those in prison for crack-related crime in California are minorities. More than three-fourths are African American.

L.A.-area state Sen. Holly Mitchell's California Fair Sentencing Act, or SB 1010, eliminates the justice system's discrimination when it comes to crack and powder.

Walmart Faults Tracy Morgan For Not Wearing Seatbelt In Limo Crash

involving two semi trucks

By Noah Rayman, Sept. 29, 2014, Time.com

Injuries suffered by Morgan and fellow passengers "were caused, in whole or in part, by plaintiffs’ failure to properly wear an appropriate available seatbelt restraint device," company says in legal filing

Walmart said Monday that comedian Tracy Morgan and several others injured in an accident on the New Jersey Turnpike in June were partially responsible for their injuries, for failing to wear seatbelts.

A speeding Walmart driver allegedly hit Morgan’s limo on June 7, badly injuring the comedian and killing friend and colleague James McNair. Morgan and three others brought a suit against the company in July, alleging that driver Kevin Roper was fatigued and that Walmart acted negligently.

In a response Monday, the company largely refrained from responding to the allegations brought in the suit, citing National Transportation Safety Board regulations regarding ongoing investigations.

But in a list of affirmative defenses, the company said that the injuries “were caused, in whole or in part, by plaintiffs’ failure to properly wear an appropriate available seatbelt restraint device.”

“By failing to exercise ordinary care in making use of available seatbelts, upon information and belief, plaintiffs acted unreasonably and in disregard of plaintiffs’ own best interests,” the response says.

Press Using Older Photos Of Alton Nolen Over Recent One In Muslim Garb

Tom Blumner, Sept. 23, 2014, Newsbusters.org

During the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman saga, the press was widely and deservedly criticized for repeatedly and almost exclusively using a photo of Martin as an innocent-looking 13 year-old over others more recently taken which were readily available. Perhaps they're at it again with alleged murderer Alton Nolen. On Saturday morning, the Associated Press described Nolen as having "beheaded a woman with a knife and was attacking another worker when he was shot and wounded by a company official." Photos of Nolen from 2013, 2011 and 2010 have accompanied press reports, while the one which will be seen after the jump from Nolen's own Facebook page just three weeks ago has been absent (HT to an emailer):

The photo is one of two dated September 5 at 10:06pm. The description: "At The Masjid (Mosque)Today For Jumar 9/5/2014 & Peforming Wudu!!!" Wudu is "the Islamic procedure for washing parts of the body using water, typically in preparation for formal prayers."

Daily Water Allocation Could Be The Next California Drought Strategy

By Steve Scauzillo, Sept. 27, 2014, San Gabriel Valley Tribune

You probably know your Social Security number, your driver’s license number and perhaps the latest wrinkle in mattress marketing, your sleep number.

But do you know your drought number?

The latter represents the amount of water you are allowed to use per day. If you don’t know it, you probably should. Not knowing could cost you money. As California’s severe drought moves into a fourth year, state and local water agencies are working on something called “allocation-based rate structures,” a kind of precursor to water rationing that’s all the rage in Sacramento and in some areas such as Santa Cruz, Irvine and Santa Monica.

Here’s how it works: Your local water company, special district or city assigns you and your household a number in gallons — a daily water allocation. Usually, one number applies to maximum indoor water use, i.e. showers, kitchen and bathroom faucets, dishwashers, clothes washers, etc., and an extra allocation is assigned for outdoor use such as lawn irrigation.

Using census records, aerial photography and satellite imagery, an agency can determine a property’s efficient water usage.

At the Irvine Ranch Water District, number of residents, amount oflandscaping and even medical needs are factored into a household’s water allocation or water budget.

“We want you to stay within that budget. That way we know you are using water in an efficient way,” according to an instructional video on the Orange County water agency’s website.

As Protests Persist, Suspects Sought In Shootings Of 2 Missouri Cops

By Reuters, Sept. 28, 2014, News.yahoo.com

(Reuters) - Police were seeking suspects on Sunday in what appeared to be the unrelated shootings of two police officers in and near the Missouri city of Ferguson, which remains on edge after a black teenager was shot to death by a white police officer last month.

The Saturday night shooting of an officer in theSt. Louis suburb of Ferguson did not seem linked to peaceful protests occurring elsewhere in the city, police said, nor was it connected to a separate shooting involving an off-duty police officer in St. Louis early Sunday.

Neither officer received life-threatening injuries, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.

No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon, Police Sergeant Brian Schellman said.

In the first incident, the officer had seen a man in the rear of the Ferguson Community Center at about 9 p.m. on Saturday. The man ran away and then turned and shot the officer in the arm during a foot chase, Schellman said.

2nd Oklahoma Man Threatened To Behead Coworker, Police Say

By Jessica Chasmar, Sept. 29, 2014, Washingtontimes.com

A fired Oklahoma City nursing home employee was arrested Friday for allegedly threatening to behead a co-worker — less than 20 miles from where Alton Alexander Nolen is accused of beheading a co-worker the day before.

Jacob Mugambi Muriithi, 30, is being held in the Oklahoma County jail on a terrorism complaint. His bail is set at $1 million, The Oklahoman reported.

“We take these threats very seriously,” said Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater.

The arrest came on the same day police in Moore identified Vaughan Foods worker Alton Alexander Nolen as the suspect accused of beheading a co-worker Thursday after he was fired. Mr. Nolen is a Muslim convert and had recently started trying to convert several employees to Islam, police said.

Mr. Muriithi has been identified as a native of Kenya who worked at Bellevue Nursing Home in northwest Oklahoma City, The Oklahoman reported.

The co-worker, who was not identified, reported Mr. Muriithi threatened her while they were both working at the nursing home on Sept. 19. She said Mr. Muriithi called himself a Muslim and said Islamic State fighters beheading Christians “is just what we do.”

ICYMI: How NY's New Gun Control Law Is Working Out (Hint: Not Great)

By Genevive Wood, Aug. 29, 2014, Dailysignal.com

Which state has the largest National Rifle Association chapter in the nation? No, it’s not Texas. As a matter of fact, it’s not located anywhere near the Wild West or the south.

The answer is New York.

In just one year, the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association saw its membership almost double – from 22,000 to 41,000. The National Rifle Association credits the increase to the “Safe Act” (Safe Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act), one of the strictest gun control laws in the country, hurriedly pushed through by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state legislature in 2013 following the Newtown, Conn., school shootings.

The NRA says the law is “a largely cosmetic legislative offering” that “instantly turned hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers into potential felons.”

Interestingly, very similar to other legislation that was rammed through with little time for lawmakers or the public to analyze (such as Obamacare), the state is providing no numbers on how many people are complying with the law (probably because the numbers are very low), and courts and other government officials have either overturned, suspended or refused to enforce various elements of the law. All to say that evidence to suggest the law is working or making New York safer is hard to find.

WSJ: Poll Shows Americans Expect U.S. To Send Troops To Fight Islamic State

By Reid Epstein, Sept. 28, 2014, WJS.com

Nearly three-quarters of Americans don’t believe President Barack Obama’s assertion that the country won’t use ground troops to fight the militant group Islamic State in Iraq or Syria, the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Annenberg survey finds.

The poll shows a substantial lack of trust in Mr. Obama’s repeated assertions that American military efforts will be limited to airstrikes and other efforts that don’t include ground troops. Some 72% of registered voters surveyed said U.S. ground troops eventually will be deployed against Islamic State’s fighters. Only 20% said they believe the U.S. won’t end up using military ground forces.

The Obama administration has cautioned that the battle against Islamic State won’t be won quickly. It has said it will proceed with an international coalition and that the U.S. won’t commit ground troops to combat.

“I want to be clear: The American forces that have been deployed to Iraq do not and won’t have a combat mission,” Mr. Obama said Sept. 17. “As your commander in chief, I won’t commit you and the rest of our armed forces to fighting another ground war in Iraq.”

Oklahoma: Woman Beheaded Was Grandmother Who Lost Her Home In Tornado, Attacker Was Let Out Of Jail Early

Alton Alexander Nolen, murderer
By Jill Reilly, Sept. 29, 2014, Dailymail.co.uk

The woman beheaded by a Muslim convert was a grandmother who had lost her home in a tornado, it emerged today.

Alton Alexander Nolen, 30, is accused of killing Colleen Hufford, 54, and stabbing Traci Johnson, 43, who apparently were attacked randomly at the Vaughan Foods facility in Moore on Thursday, after he was fired from his job

Hufford, who had been married for 25 years, had lost her family home in the Moore tornado.

Her neighbours described her as 'quick to smile' and said her husband picked her up from the food processing plant every night and he was outside when he found out she had been killed.

Today it was revealed that Nolen had served less than two years of a six-year prison sentence for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, reports News OK.

According to records he went to prison March 10, 2011, to start a two-year sentence for marijuana possession and another two-year sentence for assaulting a highway patrol trooper, the website reported.

He began his six-year sentence for cocaine possession April 26, 2011, records show - due to plea agreements with prosecutors, he was allowed to serve the three prison sentences at the same time.

7 Other Lone Wolf Islamic Attacks Inside The U.S.

Facebook
By Daniel Avel, Sept. 28, 2014, Breitbart.com

Over the weekend, the FBI announced that it would treat Islamist Alton Nolan’s alleged beheading of Colleen Hufford, 54, as a case of workplace violence. That despite the fact that Nolan’s Facebook page contains a picture of Nolan giving the ISIS salute, multiple pictures of Osama Bin Laden, a screenshot of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, and a quote reading, “I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers: smile ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them.”

This, of course, is not the first time the federal government has labeled Islamic terrorism “workplace violence.” The Fort Hood shootings by avowed Islamist Nidal Hassan were classified thus by the federal government, as well. In fact, the Obama administration has repeatedly treated “lone wolf” Islamic terror inside the United States as though it were non-terrorist crime – unlike the Bush administration, which, for example, correctly labeled as terrorism Hesham Mohamed Hadayet’s attack on the El Al counter at Los Angeles International Airport in 2002 and the Beltway snipers’ multiple murders in that same year.

The Obama administration takes great pains never to label Islamic terror as such inside the United States; instead, we are told, we should focus disproportionately on the threat of right-wing groups like the Tea Party.

Meanwhile, Islamists inside the United States kill and maim and torture.

Here are seven other recent cases of lone wolf Islamic attacks inside the United States in recent years:

Yusuf Ibrahim. In April, 28-year-old Yusuf Ibrahim was indicted for two 2013 beheadings. He allegedly shot 25-year-old Hanny Tawadros and 27-year-old Amgad Konds, then cut off their heads and hands. The two were Egyptian Coptic Christian expatriates.

Faleh Hassan Almaleki. Almaleki killed his daughter, Noor Almaleki, 20, in a parking lot in Phoenix in 2009 after she became “too Westernized” and refused an arranged marriage. He also used his car to assault the mother of Noor’s boyfriend. Ahmed Rehab of the Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the “domestic violence incident.”

Yaser Said. In 2008, Said allegedly murdered his two daughters after they began dating non-Muslims. He allegedly shot daughters Amina, 18, and Sarah, 17, on January 1, 2008 multiple times after luring them back home to visit their grandmother’s grave. Said is still at large.

Chicago: 15 Shot Across Chicago's South Side; 9 In Englewood

By Peter Nickeas, Rosemary Regina Sobol and Liam Ford, Sept. 27, 2014, Chicagotribune.com

Fifteen people were shot, three of them fatally, across the South Side in a 16-hour period starting about 2 p.m. Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday morning, according to police.

Nine of the 14 were wounded in the Englewood police district - a 20-block-by-22-block square from Garfield Boulevard 20 blocks south to 75th Street and from the Dan Ryan Expressway to a viaduct just west of Leavitt Street.

The shootings included a pair of homicides that each left two others wounded and two other shootings that left men in their 20s or 30s with survivable gunshot wounds, police said.

Friday afternoon's first attack left three men shot, one fatally, after a gunman opened fire in a West Englewood barbershop this afternoon.

The shooting took place around 2 p.m. in the 1900 block of West 59th Street, an official said. The trio was among at least four people shot Friday afternoon in the Englewood community.

Ferguson Police Officer Shot In The Arm; Off-Duty Cop Also Comes Under Fire

By Ben Brumfield and Carma Hassan, Sept. 28, 2014, Cnn.com

(CNN) -- A police officer patrolling in Ferguson, Missouri, was shot in the arm late Saturday, police said. His wound is not life-threatening, and he was taken to a local hospital.

There's no reason to believe the shooting was connected with demonstrations over the August police shooting of unarmed African-American teen Michael Brown, authorities said.

"It didn't happen within the proximity of the protest area," said St. Louis County Police Chief Col. Jon Belmar. The shooting scene was in a more secluded area.

"I wouldn't have any reason to believe right now that it was linked in any way, shape, manner or form with the protests," he said.

Still, the shooting stoked emotions among protesters who were on the street demonstrating over Brown's death.

"All the hate's got to stop," Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson told a group of demonstrators after the shooting.

He also said some people who took part in protests over Brown's shooting have threatened to kill a police officer.

Foot pursuit

The officer shot was patrolling alone in his police cruiser when he conducted a "business check" at the Ferguson Community Center, St. Louis County Police said in a statement.

He saw a "male subject" at the rear of the building. When the officer got out of his car to question him, the man ran, and the officer gave chase.
