Chicago: 15 Shot Across Chicago's South Side; 9 In Englewood

Fifteen people were shot, three of them fatally, across the South Side in a 16-hour period starting about 2 p.m. Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday morning, according to police.

Nine of the 14 were wounded in the Englewood police district - a 20-block-by-22-block square from Garfield Boulevard 20 blocks south to 75th Street and from the Dan Ryan Expressway to a viaduct just west of Leavitt Street.

The shootings included a pair of homicides that each left two others wounded and two other shootings that left men in their 20s or 30s with survivable gunshot wounds, police said.

Friday afternoon's first attack left three men shot, one fatally, after a gunman opened fire in a West Englewood barbershop this afternoon.

The shooting took place around 2 p.m. in the 1900 block of West 59th Street, an official said. The trio was among at least four people shot Friday afternoon in the Englewood community.

Chicagoland: 13 Shot Holiday Weekend --'It's like an everyday normal thing'

At least 13 people have been shot in Chicago at the start of the long holiday weekend, including a woman killed as she sat on a porch near Garfield Park and a man slain in front of a hair salon on the South Side, police said.

Shambreyh R. Barfield, 21, was sitting with a friend at a two-flat in the 3800 block of West Monroe Street Thursday afternoon when four or five masked men drove past in a blue sedan and fired, apparently aiming for someone else, police said.

Barfield was hit in the head and the friend, a 21-year-old woman, was shot in the left arm. Barfield, of the 6000 block of South Winchester Avenue, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her friend was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was stabilized.

A teen at the scene, whose mother did not want him identified, said he saw a woman slumped over on the porch after he heard what sounded like fireworks. "I think it was like 10 or 8 shots," he said. "They told me, 'Run!' So we ran."

The mother of the boy, Andrea Byes, said she is planning to move out of the two-flat where she lives with her children because of the violence, drug sales and loitering on the block.

"I'm not surprised something like this happened," said Byes, 40. "It was a matter of time. They're all over everywhere. . .These people are used to it. It's like an everyday normal thing, and it's sad that these children have to grow up thinking it's an everyday normal thing."

Another shooting overnight left one dead and one wounded in West Englewood. The two were hit when someone fired from inside or near a black car about 2:40 a.m. Friday in a stripmall at 63rd Street and Damen Avenue.

The Real Chicagoland: 3 dead, 6 Injured In Shooting Incidents --None dare blame the welfare state and absent dads

 An 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds in a home in the South Chicago neighborhood in Saturday and Sunday shootings that left at least two other people dead and 13 more injured.

 The weekend toll for gun violence in the city includes at least 7 people dead and 22 wounded.  At least 2 people were killed and 9 wounded from about 7:35 p.m. Friday to about 5 a.m. Saturday.

 For the two found shot to death Saturday in South Chicago, Chicago police were called to a home on the 8200 block of South Houston Avenue at 10:38 a.m., said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.

 The 18-year-old victim who lived at the home was identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Anthony Bankhead. Shot with him was Jordan Means, 16, of the 8100 block of South Coles Avenue. They were pronounced dead at 10:50 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

 The two were found dead with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the office. Area South detectives were investigating.

 In addition to that shooting, a 42-year-old man was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

 Darren Ray of the 3000 block of West Flournoy Street was found in an alley on the 2900 block of West Flournoy Street at 9:30 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

 Ray was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 10:04 a.m. according to the medical examiner's office.
