US On High Alert Heading Into July 4 Weekend

As Americans celebrate the country's 239th birthday, law enforcement officers remain on high alert following an increased threat of a terror attack.

Sources tell CBS News that special Transportation Security Administration (TSA) teams are being assigned to large airline hubs and investigators are watching potential suspects.

Moments after a suspected gunshot was reported at the Washington Navy Yard, hundreds of officers from upwards of a dozen local and federal agencies descended on the area amid heightened concerns of a terror attack.

America Faces Highest Threat Level--Ever

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-California, said the nation faces "the highest threat level we have ever faced in this country" due to the flow of foreign fighters to and from Iraq and Syria and the radicalization of young people on the Internet.

U.S. officials have been warning for months about the threat posed by people from America or Western Europe who travel to the Middle East to fight with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and then return to their home countries, where they may carry out attacks. Nunes said the U.S. is not aware of all the people who have made the trek or who have now come back, although FBI Director James Comey has said there are cases open in all 50 states.

Officials are increasingly looking for ways to combat radical jihadists' effectivenessin recruiting supporters through social media.

"They're very good at communicating through separate avenues where it's very difficult to track," he said. "That's why when you get a young person who is willing to get into these chat rooms, go on the Internet and get radicalized, it's something we are not only unprepared [for], we are also not used to it in this country."

​Police Officer Who Recently Gave Birth Killed In Neb. Shooting

OMAHA, Neb. -- Police in Omaha, Neb., say a shootout between officers and a convicted felon has left an officer and the suspect dead. Both died at the same hospital.

Officer Kerrie Orozco was a seven-year veteran and a new mother. Orozco was expected to begin maternity leave Thursday, with the release of her hospitalized premature infant, reports The Washington Post.

The suspect, Marcus Wheeler, is said to be a gang member and was wanted in connection with another shooting.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said Orozco was part of a task force serving a felony arrest warrant for Wheeler, reports CBS affiliate KMTV.

"She was a friend, a popular officer, a top-notch person. And I just can't imagine that this is even happened. But Officer Orozco is a top-notch individual and the city of Omaha owes her a debt of gratitude and her family like no other," said Schmaderer.

Iran Leader Rules Out Key Aspects Of Any Nuke Deal

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's supreme leader vowed Wednesday he will not allow international inspection of Iran's military sites or access to Iranian scientists under any nuclear agreement with world powers.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told military commanders Wednesday that Iran will resist "coercion and excessive demands" from America and other world powers.

Negotiators from Iran and a six nation group -- the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany -- have launched a new round of talks in Vienna focused on reaching a final deal that curbs Iran's nuclear program in return for lifting economic sanctions. The two sides reached a framework agreement in March and hope to strike a final deal by June 30.

A fact sheet on the framework accord issued by the U.S. State Department said Iran would be required to grant the U.N. nuclear agency access to any "suspicious sites."

Loretta Lynch headed to Baltimore

In one of her first acts as the new attorney general, Loretta Lynch will travel to Baltimore on Tuesday.

She has not yet visited the city in the wake of the riots and protests following the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who suffered a spinal injury and later died while in police custody.

Lynch, along with the head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, Vanita Gupta, will meet with city officials, members of Congress, law enforcement officials, faith and community leaders and others. They will be joined by Ronald Davis, the director of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and Grade Lum, the director of the Community Relations Service.

During a press conference last week, Lynch decried the violence in Baltimore and called for a "respectful conversation" there.

"It is easy to view Baltimore as a symbol of issues that we must all deal with. And of course, the difficult situation there highlights so many issues that are part of our national debate," she said. "But I'd ask that we remember that Baltimore is more than just a symbol. Baltimore is a city; it is a great city; it is a beautiful city; it is one of our cities.

As the international coalition of countries continues to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), some unlikely alliances are proving effective. While both the U.S. and Iran have said they are not coordinating efforts, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's backing of Kurdish and Shiite militias is a key component to the fight.

But CBS News senior security contributor and former CIA deputy director Michael Morell said that de-facto relationship comes with some possible serious consequences.

"There's a real risk here that over the long run we can defeat ISIS in Iraq, but we might hand Iraq to the Iranians, in a diplomatic sense," he said Tuesday on "CBS This Morning."

U.S.-backed Iraqi ground forces have not proven nearly as effective as the combination of coalition airstrikes and Kurdish and Shiite Muslim militias, which have clawed back significant territory from ISIS in northern Iraq of late.

Clearer Picture Emerges Of Man Who Became 'Jihadi John'

British intelligence officers are reportedly questioning teachers from the British high school of Mohammed Emwazi, who has been identified as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria's frontman killer known as "Jihadi John."

A teacher came forward Friday night and said that Emwazi as a student had trouble controlling his anger. Now, British intelligence is trying to determine whether there was any hint of the vicious murderer he would become.

British intelligence said Emwazi was on its radar since 2009 until it apparently lost track of him about two years ago. Britain said it will search for the ISIS killers who beheaded British and American hostages.

A newly released image shows Emwazi back in 2006 as a college student in a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball cap, the menacing eyes the only facial feature visible in brutal ISIS videos.

NEW YORK -- Bob Simon, the longtime "60 Minutes" correspondent and legendary CBS News foreign reporter died suddenly Wednesday night in a car accident in New York City.

The award-winning newsman was 73.

"Bob Simon was a giant of broadcast journalism, and a dear friend to everyone in the CBS News family. We are all shocked by this tragic, sudden loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob's extended family and especially with our colleague Tanya Simon," said CBS News President David Rhodes.

"It's a terrible loss for all of us at CBS News," 60 Minutes Executive Producer Jeff Fager said in a statement. "It is such a tragedy made worse because we lost him in a car accident, a man who has escaped more difficult situations than almost any journalist in modern times.

Military Helicopter Crash Kills Marines In California

The military says two Marines were killed when their helicopter crashed during a training exercise in Southern California.

The Third Marine Aircraft Wing chopper was carrying just the two when it went down late Friday afternoon at the base in Twentynine Palms.

Both Marines on board died as a result of crash injuries.

On Thursday night, CBS continued to make no mention of the news that the hacking attack on Sony Pictures has revealed emails between co-chairwoman Amy Pascal and film producer Scott Rudin mocking what they perceived to be President Barack Obama’s movie tastes. The CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley covered continued fallout from the attack, but only in the context of no press being allowed at the premiere of the Sony film The Interview, which is largely believed to be the reason that the movie studio was targeted for attack.

Ebola Outbreak: Doctor Infected In Sierra Leone To Be Treated In Omaha

A surgeon who was infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone will be flown to Omaha, Nebraska, for treatment this weekend, CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook has confirmed.

The doctor-- who has not been identified -- is from Sierra Leone but is a permanent resident of the U.S.

Two prior patients -- American aid worker Dr. Rick Sacra and videojournalist Ashoka Mukpo -- were successfully treated for Ebola at the Nebraska Medical Center.

On Sunday, as CBS News celebrated the 60th anniversary of “Face the Nation,” political figures and journalists appeared to discuss the news of the day. President George W. Bush appeared and offered a subtle jab at President Obama’s leadership and President Obama appeared and discussed his plan to act unilaterally without Congress on the issue of illegal immigration.

Joining the program was also the venerated journalist and one half of the duo who helped take down a corrupt president, Bob Woodward. After viewing the President’s comments, Woodward was sharp in his criticism and bluntly claimed that the president just flat-out isn’t listening to what the American people are trying to tell him.


Despite being warned by Republicans, Obama has maintained that he intends to act through executive actions on the issue of amnesty for illegal immigrants. Last week, Fox News’ Judge Andrew Napolitano claimed that doing so would open the president up to the possibility of impeachment proceedings as such executive orders directly conflict with his duty to uphold the law of the land.

George P. Bush was elected Texas land commissioner in a landslide Tuesday, winning a little-known but powerful post that could eventually lead to higher offices and becoming the first in his family's political dynasty to win his first race.

Bush, a 38-year-old Fort Worth attorney and energy consultant, raised more than $3 million against his little-known Democratic opponent, former El Paso Mayor John Cook. Nonetheless, he spent months crisscrossing the state in a campaign bus adorned with his towering, grinning face.

Bush is the grandson of former President George H.W. Bush and nephew of President George W. Bush, who was Texas governor before taking the White House. His father, Jeb, is a former Florida governor who is considering a presidential run in 2016. But none of them--nor the family patriarch and source of George P.'s middle name, long-serving Connecticut Sen. Prescott Bush--won their first races.

Former CBS News Reporter Sharyl Attkisson Claims Existence Of Obama Enemies' List

Sharyl Attkisson is an investigative journalist who became the story when she quit CBS News after two decades amid allegations that the network refused to run some of her stories that were critical of President Barack Obama. Ahead of the Tuesday release of her book Stonewalled: My Fight for Truth Against the Forces of Obstruction, Intimidation, and Harassment in Obama’s Washington, she spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her struggles with CBS executives and her assertion that her computers were hacked, possibly by Obama operatives.

THR reached out for a response from CBS News, but the organization declined to comment.

 THR: Who did you tell at CBS that your computers were hacked?

The first person I spoke to was Washington bureau chief Chris Isham.

 THR: Did he believe you?

He appeared to.

 THR: Did CBS care? Did they do anything about it?

God, you know, there’s a lot of people there. He seemed to care. He hired a separate computer forensics firm to look at the computers. They, too, agreed that there had been highly sophisticated remote intrusion of my computers. They decided to dig deeper and embark upon a process that spanned a number of months, during which time the situation with the Associated Press and the government spying on Fox News reporter James Rosen was disclosed, as well as Edward Snowden’s NSA information.


 THR: Did they ever find out who hacked your computers and spied on you?

I don’t believe their computer forensics team concluded who spied on me.

Sharyl Attkisson Releases Video Of Apparent Computer Hack

Sharyl Attkisson, the former CBS News correspondent who claims that her computers were hacked by the government while she was reporting on the Benghazi scandal, has released a video she took with her cellphone of one apparent hack. The video (above) was shared with POLITICO and appears to show words being deleted from her files without her control.

In her new book, "Stonewalled," Attkisson details how her computers were hacked in late 2012 during her reporting on Benghazi. Attkisson alleges that government agencies were behind the attack, and also claims that her TVs and phone were tampered with. Someone she knows finds a “stray cable” attached to her FiOS box, which can be used to download data.

There is no way to confirm from the video alone that a hack is actually taking place, and there's reason to doubt that Attkisson was hacked at all. In a recent post for Vox, TImothy B. Lee demonstrated how Attkisson's so-called "evidence" isn't necessarily anything more than the "routine technical glitches that everyone suffers." Nevertheless, Attkisson's decision to release the video suggests she plans on using it to make her case. Attkisson will give her first television interview to Bill O'Reilly, of Fox News, on Monday.

As previously reported, Attkisson left CBS News in March after more than two decades with the network, citing frustrations with what she saw as the network’s liberal bias, an outsize influence by the network’s corporate partners, and a lack of dedication to investigative reporting. Sources at the network told POLITICO she increasingly felt that her work was no longer supported and that it was a struggle to get her reporting on air.
