Politifact Rules Chris Cuomo's First Amendment Claims Were 'False'

The reliably liberal Politifact (through its Punditfact site) surprisingly took CNN’s New Day co-host Chris Cuomo took task on Thursday for his rather suspect claim on Twitter from Wednesday that “hate speech is excluded from protection” under the First Amendment.

Through its Punditfact site, Politifact’s Lauren Carroll noted his numerous attempts to clarify his remarks and citations of case law, but still came to the conclusion that Cuomo’s original statement was “false” (as opposed to “pants on fire”):

The Supreme Court has ruled that certain categories of speech are excluded from constitutional protection, such as a threat or "fighting words." Sometimes, speech can be both a threat and hate speech, in which case it would not necessarily have First Amendment protection.

NBC Nightly News Declines To Label Retiring California Senator Barbara Boxer A Liberal

The frequency of networks in failing to label elected officials along the lines of their true political ideology has never failed to let up. When former Republican Senator Jesse Helms passed away in July 2008, fill-in anchor Lester Holt said on NBC Nightly News that Helms was “a champion to the right and a lightning rod to the left” while then-NBC News correspondent Martin Savidge referred to Helms as “an ultra-rightist.” 

More recently, MSNBC’s Luke Russert labeled now-Republican Senator Joni Ernst as “rather extreme” in holding views compatible with the tea party.

CBS Continues To Ignore Email With Racially Tinged Jokes

On Thursday night, CBS continued to make no mention of the news that the hacking attack on Sony Pictures has revealed emails between co-chairwoman Amy Pascal and film producer Scott Rudin mocking what they perceived to be President Barack Obama’s movie tastes. The CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley covered continued fallout from the attack, but only in the context of no press being allowed at the premiere of the Sony film The Interview, which is largely believed to be the reason that the movie studio was targeted for attack.

After a month in which NBC Nightly News gave more prominence to ugly Christmas sweaters, grape salad, Al Roker's 34-hour weather report, and a live broadcast of Peter Pan starring Brian Williams' daughter, Allison, the broadcast finally discovered Jonathan Gruber.
