Sanders: Majority Of Gun Owners Are Responsible And Obey The Law

Vermont liberal Sen. Bernie Sanders said Sunday that the majority of gun owners are responsible and obey the law.

Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday, Sanders said that a gun manufacturer should be no more responsible for a murder performed by their product than a hammer manufacturer is responsible "if someone beat someone over the head with a hammer."

Sanders was taking on detractors who have pointed to a bill he voted for that shields firearms manufacturers from being sued by gun violence victims. Presidential rival Hillary Clinton made reference to this bill in New Hampshire Saturday, saying that it was the "height of irresponsibility not to talk about it."

Sanders noted Sunday that he has a pretty poor grade of a D- from the National Rifle Association and has voted for the assault weapons ban.

Sanders suggested that he could broker a "serious debate and action on guns," but that it won't happen if "we have extreme positions on both sides."

NBC Fires Donald Trump, But Keeps The Rev. Al Sharpton

In one of the most startling politically correct decisions any major television network has ever made, NBChas fired Donald Trump. Whether it was the right decision after his remarks about illegals coming over the border from Mexico or not, how is it they retain the Reverend Al Sharpton who makes Trump seem mellow? The MSNBC host has made equally offensive statements (or more) and keeps his job, Kayleigh McEnany, editor of Political Prospect, told CNN on Wednesday.

Yet Trump was immediately criticized when he said in his June 16 presidential campaign announcement, "When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people." Hardly anything more alarming than most of Sharpton’s commentary’s or false remarks he has made in the past away from the MSNBC studios; Ferguson, MO and the ensuing riots being a prime example.

But that wasn’t the only hit Trump got in recent days. Last week, Univision announced it would not air Trump's Miss Universe pageant. NBC followed their lead by announcing Monday; they too were cutting all ties with Trump, including his Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants and dumping him as host of "The Apprentice." Yet the reverend keeps his job as a bombastic and highly controversial host of a regular “news” and commentary show at NBC’s sister network.

Poll: 70 Percent Of Americans Believe News Media Is Intentionally Biased

Nearly three quarters of Americans believe the news media reports with an intentional bias, according to a new survey.

The 2015 State of the First Amendment Survey, conducted by the First Amendment Center and USA Today, was released Friday. It shows that only 24 percent of American adults agree with the statement that "overall, the news media tries to report the news without bias," while 70 percent disagree.

When the question was asked last year, 41 percent agreed, a 17-point difference.

"These are discouraging results for those of us who have spent our careers in journalism," Ken Paulson, president of the First Amendment Center, wrote in an op-ed for USA Today on Thursday. "In 23 years in newsrooms, I saw consistent and concerted efforts to get stories right. Clearly, the public's not convinced."

The survey suggests that controversies this year that engulfed national news anchors Brian Williams of NBC and George Stephanopoulos of ABC may have had a deep impact on public trust in media. It also floats the idea that the public has had a negative reaction to news coverage of the racially-charged events in Ferguson, Mo., and Baltimore, Md.

"Concern over the economy is the highest I've ever seen," top GOP pollster Ed Goeas told the moderate Republican Ripon Society. He said 72 percent are worried about an economic downturn.

"Republicans need to get into the game on better turf and that means talking in specifics about how we will bring the economy back and help create the jobs that go with real recovery," added pollster David Winston.

Chief Justice Roberts: Why Not Polygamy Too?

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts argued in his dissent in Friday's same-sex marriage case that by saying gay marriages are constitutional, the Court may be heading down the road toward legalizing polygamy.

Roberts was one of four dissenters in the case, and argued that the Court's majority opinion goes too far in prescribing law in an area that had been left to the states. He also said it raises significant questions, including whether states have a right to define marriage as being between two people.

"Although the majority randomly inserts the adjective 'two' in various places, it offers no reason at all why the two-person element of the core definition of marriage may be preserved while the man-woman element may not," Roberts wrote. "Indeed, from the standpoint of history and tradition, a leap from opposite-sex marriage to same-sex marriage is much greater than one from a two-person union to plural unions, which have deep roots in some cultures around the world."

"If the majority is willing to take the big leap, it is hard to see how it can say no to the shorter one," he wrote.

GOP Candidates: Restock The Supreme Court, Amend The Constitution

Republican presidential candidates say stocking the Supreme Court with conservatives and considering a constitutional amendment to give states the right to regulate marriage are two ways the GOP can fight back against Friday's ruling that legalized gay marriage around the country.

Both ideas, coincidently, would require voters to put one of these candidates in the White House in 2017.

Both Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry said shoring up the highest court in the land needs to be a top priority for the next Republican president.

"While I disagree with this decision, we live in a republic and must abide by the law," Rubio said. "As we look ahead, it must be a priority of the next president to nominate judges and justices committed to applying the Constitution as written and originally understood."

Rubio said the question of same-sex marriage is more about "definition of an institution, not the dignity of a human being."

Perry made an outright pledge to appoint the right justices to the court were he to win the White House.

State: 'Too Soon To Tell' If ISIS Behind Bloody 3 Continent-Wide Attacks

The State Department could not confirm whether the Islamic State was behind bloody terrorist attacks that rocked three continents Friday, though the extremists themselves celebrated the attacks across Twitter.

Spokesperson John Kirby cited the newness of the attacks while explaining that the State Department cannot answer whether the terrorist group was involved or coordinated Friday's gruesome spate of attacks.

Islamic State supporters lacked the State Department's reticence, gleefully trumpeting the attacks with a hashtag celebrating "Bloody Friday," reported Vocativ. "This Friday is a holiday for the Muslims," one Islamic State supporter wrote.

"The harvest of the Caliphate to Friday, 9th of Ramada: Explosion in a mosque in Kuwait, explosion in a tourist hotel in Tunisia and attacking gas company in France," tweeted another Islamic State supporter. "The good tidings of Friday: Factory in France, hotel in Tunisia, mosque in Kuwait, battles in Kobane, conquests in Haksaka," read another tweet.

How Donald Trump's Candidacy Helps Hillary Clinton

Donald Trump shouldn't be taken seriously as a presidential candidate, but to the extent that he could affect the race it all, it will be to help Hillary Clinton.

If Clinton is going to win, one of the ways that she'll do so is to convey the image that she has more stature and gravitas than any of the Republicans.

As it is, with 15 expected candidates (not including Trump), the Republican field has already taken on the image of being a bit of a circus. Trump now adds to that perception, and because he has the highest name recognition of any Republican candidate, he'll help define field for lower-information voters.

Next to Clinton, who is running without real competition, Republican candidates will look small fighting it out with a clown, who is likely to meet the polling threshold to participate in the debates. To Americans who consume mainly celebrity news, they may not know much about the Republican field beyond the fact that Trump is running.

Budget Office: U.S. Debt Picture Has 'Worsened Dramatically'

Congress' budget office again warned that the U.S. faces a massive debt problem Tuesday, using stark language to describe the government's long-term mismatch between spending and revenues even as it slightly upgraded its projections for debt over the next 25 years.

"The long-term outlook for the federal budget has worsened dramatically over the past several years, in the wake of the 2007-2009 recession and slow recovery," the Congressional Budget Office reported in its long-term budget outlook for 2015 released Tuesday.

The Budget Office, a nonpartisan in-house think tank for Congress, projected that the federal debt is set to rise from 74 percent of economic output today to 103 percent by 2040, driven by spending on government healthcare and retirement programs and interest payments on the debt.

"A feminist is a woman who lives the life she chooses," Fiorina said. "We will have arrived when every woman can decide for herself how to best find and use her God-given gifts. A woman may choose to have five children and home-school them. She may choose [to] become a CEO or run for president. I am conservative because I know we are all equal in the eyes of God — men and women."

The former Hewlett-Packard CEO turned Republican presidential candidate has also been critical of conservatives' outreach to female voters in the past, and organized the Unlocking Potential Project to turn out women voters in the 2014 midterm elections.

Fiorina will talk about her success in the business world — from secretary to CEO — and how gender impacts the obstacles women face, according to her prepared remarks provided by her campaign.

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was searching for ways to further boost his income while he was making secret payments to cover up allegations he was involved in child sexual abuse when he was a high school wrestling coach, J. David John, a former friend and business associate alleges.

John asked financial advisers on Hastert's behalf in 2010 for advice on how to create an annuity that would provide a large cash payout each year. John did not tell the advisers that he was working for Hastert.

"I did not think much about it at the time, but looking back at it, it does seem strange," John told the New York Times. "He just said he needed to generate some cash."

Hastert became a lobbyist after he retired from politics in 2007 and had a net worth of several million dollars, but very little of it was liquid. Around the same time as John's inquiries, the former lawmaker stepped up his lobbying work, putting in long hours on behalf of several clients.

After Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum said Pope Francis should "leave science to the scientists" last week, "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace challenged: If the Pope shouldn't talk about science, why should Santorum?

"The church has gotten it wrong a few times on science," Santorum had said in a previous interview. "I think we are probably better off leaving science to the scientists and focusing on what we're really good at."

"Two points, if he's not a scientist, and, in fact, he does have a degree in chemistry — neither are you," Wallace said.

"I agree," said Santorum.

"And the second point is that ... 80-90 percent of scientists that have studied this say that humans, human activity contributes to climate change," said Wallace. "I guess the question would be, if he shouldn't talk about it, should you?"

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday that there was a "democracy problem" in the U.S. caused by the fact that the states are allowed to pass the laws that govern voting. Federal reform of the process is needed, he said.

"Our elections are governed by state law and for a long time I've believed we need to make a fundamental series of reforms," de Blasio told CBS's "Face the Nation." "Let's face it, a lot of the people in the political class have tried to discourage voter involvement and a lot of incumbents prefer a very small electorate."

The mayor referred to several Republican governors who have signed laws requiring photo identification by voters, arguing the provision is a modest step to prevent fraud. Democrats like de Blasio counter that Republicans' interests are more partisan: They want to discourage some people from voting altogether.

Relentless Attack On 2nd Amendment

Commonly used and unregulated internet discussions and videos about guns and ammo could be closed down under rules proposed by the State Department, amounting to a "gag order on firearm-related speech," the National Rifle Association is warning.

In updating regulations governing international arms sales, State is demanding that anyone who puts technical details about arms and ammo on the web first get the OK from the federal government — or face a fine of up to $1 million and 20 years in jail.

According to the NRA, that would include blogs and web forums discussing technical details of common guns and ammunition, the type of info gun owners and ammo reloaders trade all the time.

"Gunsmiths, manufacturers, reloaders, and do-it-yourselfers could all find themselves muzzled under the rule and unable to distribute or obtain the information they rely on to conduct these activities," said the NRA in a blog posting.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley will launch his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination Saturday in Baltimore. During the forthcoming campaign, it will be impossible for O'Malley to escape his past as a fiscal liberal who made higher taxes rain over Maryland.

Maryland was hit by 40 tax hikes costing $9.5 billion during O'Malley's eight years in office, from 2007-14. Tax-weary Marylanders made Republican Larry Hogan governor in 2014, bucking O'Malley's lieutenant governor, Anthony Brown, who was the Democratic candidate. Less-patient Marylanders voted with their feet and simply fled the state: Almost 72,000 people left Maryland from mid-2007 to mid-2014, according to Census Bureau data.

Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee have asked Attorney General Loretta Lynch for an update on whether she will pursue criminal charges against former IRS employee Lois Lerner for her role in the IRS targeting scandal.

The committee last year identified three possible criminal charges that could be brought against Lerner, and asked the Department of Justice to consider bringing those charges. At the time, the attorney general was Eric Holder, and the committee chairman was Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich.

The committee also said Lerner provided misleading statements to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration when it was investigating the scandal, and that Lerner may have exposed confidential taxpayer information in the course of her tenure at the IRS.

Woman Who Helped Launch The Current Uproar Over Sexism In Tech Is Sorry

In 2013, Elissa Shevinsky wrote an article titled "That's it, I'm finished defending sexism in tech." The article was based on her concerns that a major tech expo would open with a presentation with an app called "Titstare," which, as the name implied, allowed users to take photos of themselves staring at women's breasts.

Shevinsky had been in the tech industry for a decade at that point, and said she had put up with sexism all the time. She concluded her article by writing that one of the solutions to the problem was to get more women in tech.

Her article received 40,000 views and was shared around the web, helping to spark a debate about the lack of women in the tech industry, a debate with the notable accomplishment of making a grown man — a comet scientist — cry on live TV because the shirt he was wearing offended some.

Because of the movement she helped create, Shevinsky has been described as a "social justice warrior" — a usually derogatory term applied to those who engage in hostile arguments in the name of righting a perceived social injustice.

Lawsuit Spells Out 'Nightmare' For California Man Accused Without Evidence

The accusation

On Jan. 19, 2013, nearly a year after that bus trip, Hounsell became executive director of the Los Angeles County GOP. A week later, on Jan. 27, an accusation was made that he had been sending inappropriate Facebook messages to an underage girl.

Doe's fellow students had made the accusation anonymously after Doe supposedly left her computer open in public on Facebook. They took screen shots of messages containing graphic language, obtained by the Examiner, and handed them over to school authorities.

When the police came to the school on Feb. 1, Doe claimed Hounsell had tickled her ribs and started sending her explicit messages sometime after the bus trip. Doe told police that she had replied because she thought it was harmless and never planned to meet him again in person.

A month after the first police interview, Doe was brought in for a recorded interview with two detectives from the Internet Crimes Against Children task force. This time, Doe told the officers that Hounsell had tickled her leg several times while he was "having a conversation with somebody else."

Doe also reiterated that at no time did she or Hounsell ever agree to meet. She gave officers access to her Facebook account. Even though she had deactivated and reactivated the account, the messages should still have been there.

No evidence of messages

On Mar. 25, 2013, ICAC officers logged on to Doe's Facebook profile but were "unable to locate any sexual [sic] explicit chat between her and the suspect," according to a police report. The officer did find that Hounsell was on her friends list.

A week later, on April 5, Officer Eric Good talked to Hounsell. The police report says he told Hounsell that messages existed between him and Doe. The police report made it seem like Hounsell may have admitted the crime was possible.

I [ICAC Officer Eric Good] advised Hounsell that I had chat logs where he stated that he knew that the victim was under the age of 18 and Hounsell advised me that he did not remember that chat. Hounsell stated that during the time he was chatting with [Jane Doe], he was having marital problems. Hounsell stated that he would begin drinking alcohol while he was at home. After having a few drinks he would log into his Facebook profile and contact some of his female friends and attempt to engage them in sexually explicit chat.

Hounsell told the Examiner that the police report did not accurately reflect his statements, and that his talk of drinking and messaging female friends referred to years earlier when he was still single. Hounsell further said that the only conversations he had with Doe were strictly professional, done over his work email address and only pertained to a few questions she had about charter schools and government.

Hounsell also says he offered Officer Good his Facebook login to check for the explicit messages. Good did not take him up on the offer.

The arrest

On July 1, 2013, a Democratic former assemblyman named Mike Feuer became L.A. City Attorney. When the Los Angeles County District Attorney declined to press charges against Hounsell on July 30, Feuer seized the case. Officer Good contacted Hounsell again to find out his attorney's information. Members of the press began calling Hounsell, his family and his employer to discuss charges Hounsell wasn't even aware of yet.

The media circus that ensued — complete with news cameras camping outside his family home for days — made Hounsell believe this was in part motivated by political harassment. "The City originally wanted to take me into custody at my house, where the press was heading," he said. "When I showed up downtown to turn myself in, it sent everyone for a scramble, and they couldn't get cameras there in time."

By the time Hounsell was bailed out of jail seven hours later (he spent six of them waiting to be given access to a working telephone) and recovered his cell phone, it had been inundated with Google Alerts for his own name.

Hounsell was charged with two counts of trying to seduce a minor. He would only learn after a lengthy, humiliating investigation that police had no evidence — and in fact never would obtain any evidence — that the Facebook messages in question had ever really existed.

Michelle Obama: Blacks Have Been 'Frustrated And Invisible' For 'Decades'

First Lady Michelle Obama urged students at Tuskegee University, a historically black university in Alabama, to remain involved in civic life during a time of tension regarding race relations across the country.

At the school's commencement address, the First Lady listed scenarios in which African-Americans feel they encounter systemic discrimination, such as "nagging worries that you're going to get stopped or pulled over for absolutely no reason." She said those feelings are "real," but disengaging is not an option.

"I want to be very clear that those feelings are not an excuse to just throw up our hands and give up. Not an excuse. They are not an excuse to lose hope. To succumb to feelings of despair and anger only means that in the end, we lose," Obama said.

The comments come a week after violent riots brought Baltimore to a halt following the arrest and death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, a black man who died as a result of injuries sustained during his apprehension. Maryland State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby has charged all six Baltimore Police Department officers involved in Gray's arrest for offenses including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.
