Cruz Presidential Campaign Says Supporters Donated $51 Million

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator Ted Cruz and the outside groups supporting his presidential bid have raised more than $51 million in the three months since he launched his campaign for president, according to a statement from his campaign on Sunday.

Cruz, who announced his candidacy on March 23 in a speech at the conservative school Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, has raised far less in donations directly to his campaign than his supporters have collected for the four outside spending groups supporting him.

The statement said there were 175,000 individual donations to the campaign with an average contribution of $81. About $10 million came in during the second quarter of the year.

Final figures from political action committees supporting him have not been released yet but the Cruz campaign said that in June the groups announced having already brought in more than $37 million.

Hillary Asks Donors For $1

Hillary Clinton is asking supporters to chip in a buck. In an email this afternoon, Clinton writes, "I’m asking you to step up today, give just $1, and become a Launch Donor -- one of the tough, essential supporters who stood with me from the very beginning."

But Clinton says it's not about the dollar.

"It's not about the money. It's about knowing that when I step on the stage on Saturday, you’re with me. You have my back -- just like I’ll have yours."

The ask is a lot less expensive than the one Clinton is making of those who want to attend the fundraiser with singer Jon Bon Jovi. A ticket to that event costs between $1,000-$2,700.

Almost as a testimony to how hard it is these days to raise money for political parties, the Republican National Committee, (RNC), now is preparing to sell replicas of Former Vice-President Dick Cheney's cowboy hat for $72 apiece, according to ABC News on Monday. While Cheney was Vice-President, his all white cowboy hat became famous as his signature item of attire. The hat became the iconic symbol of Cheney's Vice-Presidency as well as his mark of singular distinction. Having come from Wyoming, Cheney seemed to exemplify the rugged, independent life-stye that is very popular among men from western states.

During his tenure as Vice-President, Cheney was a very high-profile figure who was hard to ignore. He was in charge of America's aggressive actions against terrorists, including but not limited to water boarding, which is a form of torture that involves forcing water down the throats of those thought to be withholding information from their interrogators. The practice is very controversial, even though it was enthusiastically condoned by George W. Bush, who was President during Cheney's tenure as Vice-President. There are some who have intimated that Cheney should be tried for war crimes because of his exercise of the water boarding torture technique, while others believe that we never would have learned important information about impending terrorist attacks had it not been for the water boarding actions taken by Cheney.

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow hosted an a Democrat fundraiser at her Los Angeles home. Paltrow was more than eager to express her love for Obama, saying it would be a good idea to give him unlimited power. “It would be wonderful if we were able to give this man all of the power that he needs to pass the things that he needs to pass,” Paltrow said.

Her neighbors, however, weren’t nearly as excited about the event.

Some want to kick the A-list actress out of the upscale neighborhood because of the event, which cost $1,000 to $32,000 per head.

“Traffic stood still, children were stranded at school, residents could not leave their own driveways,” The New York Times reported. “That’s not the way life is supposed to be lived in Mandeville Canyon.”

According to The Times, neighbor Bret Lewis posted on a private website for residents that the neighborhood doesn’t need people “who pay no heed to the concerns of their neighbors.”

“She belongs in the movie theaters, and President Obama can entertain in the Staples Center,” he wrote.

Obama Hits GOP As Party Of Billionaires

President Barack Obama chided the Republican Party for catering to the 'interests of billionaires' in an email to supporters on Tuesday, then attended a series of high-dollar fundraisers, including one at real estate mogul Rich Richman's house.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee fundraiser at Richman's house in Greenwich, Connecticut, cost as much as $32,400 a person, according to the White House.

The other two events, held in New York and sponsored by the Democratic National Committee, cost between $1,000 and $32,400 to attend.

As Obama was yucking it up with wealthy Democratic donors, he sent out a fundraising email slamming the GOP for being in the pocket of billionaires, the Washington Times reports.

'If the Republicans win, we know who they’ll be fighting for,' Obama allegedly wrote. 'Once again, the interests of billionaires will come before the needs of the middle class.'

The president opined in the email that 'Republican groups are spending massive sums against us.'

At the fundraisers Obama did not discuss Republican representatives' loyalties, but he did plead with donors to elect Democrats in November if they want to see changes to the immigration system, paid family leave, repairs to the country's infrastructure and an increase in the federal minimum wage.

'We have achieved so much but we still have so much to do,' Obama told attendees of the DNC event in New York. 'So far, we can't get Republicans to cooperate.'

The president told his audience that despite Republican obstructionism in Congress, his administration has had a number of successes, as well.

'The reason you don't hear about them is they elicit hope,' he said. 'They're good news.'

The cynical media doesn't like to promote good news, he argued.
