EXCLUSIVE: NYC Stop-And-Frisk Plunges As Crime Climbs

By Rocco Parascandola, Kerry Burke, Larry McShane, Jun. 5, 2015, New York Daily News

A dramatic drop in stop-and-frisk encounters has emboldened criminals and made cops more reluctant to take proactive police action, even as murders and shootings are on the rise in the city.

The frightening message — echoed by police supervisors and union leaders — comes as stop-and-frisk encounters are on pace to plunge by 42% this year, with 20,000 fewer street stops.

There were 11,652 stops across the city through June 3 — projecting to roughly 28,000 for the year, records obtained by the Daily News show. As the number of stops fell, the number of murders spiked 19.5% during the first five months of the year, the number of people shot is up 9.2% and the number of shooting incidents jumped 9%.

“What you’re seeing now are the perps carrying their guns because they’re not afraid to carry them,” said Ed Mullins, head of the Sergeants Benevolent Association. “We’ve created an atmosphere where we’ve handcuffed the police. We are sitting back, taking a less proactive approach.”

Chicago Gangs Battle In Street Using With Roman Candles

By Jason Molinet, Jun. 5, 2015, New York Daily News

They fought fire with fire.

Two rival gangs on Chicago's West Side were caught on video in a running street battle using Roman candles as weapons.

Bolts of lightning flashed as the teens zigged and tagged, with sparks from the fireworks lighting up the Illinois night.

About a dozen teenagers, some wearing hoods tied tight to protect their heads, scampered in the middle of the street Tuesday night at the intersection of Western Ave. and Wilcox St. at about 10:30 p.m., the Chicago Tribune reported.

Prince Releases Freddie Gray Protest Song ‘Baltimore’

By New York Daily News, May 9, 2015

Prince performs onstage in Los Angeles in March 2014.

Prince released his much-anticipated protest song about “Baltimore” on Saturday — one day before his scheduled “Rally 4 Peace” concert in the troubled city.

Oddly, the music he wrote to match his socio-political message could barely be more breezy.

Contrasting lyrics inspired by the death of Freddie Gray and the subsequent riots in Baltimore, Prince’s like-named song has the light, pop-rock panache of hits like “Raspberry Beret.”

It’s catchy — in this case, to a fault. Listeners may have trouble putting together its sober lyrics with the sometimes flighty tune, enlivened by several rousing guitar solos.

“Nobody got in nobody’s way / So I guess you could say it was a good day / at least a little better than the day in Baltimore,” Prince sings.

ISIS Threatens To Kill 2 Japanese Hostages, Asks For $200M

Jason Molinet and Corky Siemaszko, Jan. 20, 2015, New York Daily News

“You have proudly donated $100 million to kill our women and children, to destroy the homes of the Muslims," the militant says, emphasizing his points with the wave of a knife. “So the life of this Japanese citizen will cost you $100 million."

That was a reference to the $200 million in non-military aid that Japan had just pledged to several countries fighting ISIS.

Poll: New Yorkers Say City Race Relations Have Taken Nosedive

Jennifer Fermino, Jan. 16, 2015, New York Daily News

The number of New Yorkers who described race relations as “good” was 46%, the lowest number in four polls over the past five months and 13 points lower than a Nov. 18 poll.

At the same time, the number who describe race relations as “bad” has climbed to 45%, a 14 point increase from November.

The turmoil hasn’t hurt Mayor de Blasio’s approval ratings, which climbed two points from the last Quinnipiac poll in December.

Charlie Hebdo Has Long History Of Poking Fun At Religious, Political Establishment From Paris Offices

Sasha Goldstein, Jan. 7, 2015, New York Daily News

The publication went under in 1981 before being revived in 1992. It quickly took to satirically skewering a wide-range of political and religious figures, from Pope Benedict XVI and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. One cover depicted an Orthodox Jew kissing a Nazi soldier.

The small-circulation paper generally is left-leaning, using cartoons and fake news reports to take shots at those generally in powerful positions.

‘The Interview,’ Movie Review

Joe Neumaier, Dec. 17, 2014, New York Daily News

The pair must have thought they were making a successor to Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator” (1940) with a dash of “Stripes” (1981). But things have changed since those movies were made: Today, one slight miscalculation can result in a bomb of an entirely different kind.

Too bad dictators and terrorists don’t think they’re that funny, because “The Interview” is.

Chokehold Cop Was Supervised By Black Female Sergeant

Denis Hamill, Dec. 3, 2014, New York Daily News

Having that black sergeant in charge of that crime scene takes race out of the equation. As awful as Pantaleo’s actions appear on that video, at no time does that black sergeant order Pantaleo to stop choking Garner.

Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan is known to be tough and fair. But he’s also a politician who faces the voters every four years. And so this radioactive case that probably would have earned a felony indictment in any of the other four boroughs of New York City could have been a career-wrecker.

Erik Badia, Joe Stepansky, Rocco Parascandola, Thomas Tracy, and Corky Siemaszko, Dec. 9, 2014, New York Daily News

Some of the students in the center could also be heard pleading with Peters to give up, and at least one implored the police not to fire. But Peters kept coming until Officer Roberto Pagan fired a single shot that hit Peters in the stomach — and ended the drama on Eastern Parkway.

Peters was so close to Pagan that he nearly toppled onto the officer, sources said.

Rosenblatt, 22, was rushed to the trauma unit at Kings County Hospital and was later transferred to Bellevue Hospital, where he was in critical condition with bleeding on the brain.
