PhillyLand: Two Men Killed In Opposite Ends Of The City Within 24 Hours

By Aubrey Whelan, July 15, 2015 Inquirer

A 25-year-old man was killed by a gunman who chased him down a Point Breeze street Monday morning, Philadelphia police said. It was the first of two homicides in less than 24 hours at opposite ends of the city.

In Monday's incident, police responded to a report of gunshots on the 1700 block of Tasker Street at 11:48 a.m. and found the victim shot in the left leg, arm, and chest. Medics took him to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about six hours later. His name was not released.

Police said they believe the gunman opened fire as he neared the victim, who lived about two blocks from where he was killed. The gunman then got into a car and drove off, police said.

Nine People Shot At Mantua Barbecue

By Mark Fazlollah, Jun. 21, 2015, Philly.com

Nine people were shot, including a baby and two children, during a barbecue Saturday night in Philadelphia's Mantua section, police said.

The shotgun blasts left the three juveniles and three of the six male adult victims in stable condition at West Philadelphia hospitals late Saturday night, police said. Two other male victims arrived at Hahnemann University Hospital with minor wounds and were to be released, authorities. The condition of a last victim could not be immediately learned.

The shooting took place about 9:50 p.m. near 41st and Ogden Streets in the 16th District, authorities said.

Detectives said it appeared that the barbecue - involving as many as 50 people - had been fired upon by one shooter, who fired two buckshot blasts from a shotgun. He fired from the street, they said, but may have arrived or left in a car. "There were a lot of people out there," Lt. John Walker, of Southwest Detectives, said Saturday night, saying the toll could have been even higher.

Credit: Iinquirer and Daily News / Joseph Kaczmarek
By Alex Wigglesworth, May 10, 2015, Philly.com

A pair of shootings less than two blocks apart in Bella Vista left three teens injured early Sunday.

Officers first responded about 1:20 a.m. to the 800 block of South Street, where they found a 16-year-old shot in his left thigh and a 17-year-old shot in his left leg, police said.

Both were taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and placed in stable condition.

The victims told investigators they were walking west on South Street when they saw a group of men get into an argument at the intersection of 9th Street, police said. One of the men pulled out a handgun during the dispute and fired several shots, according to the victims' account.

That man is described as a 5-foot-7 black male between the ages of 18 and 21.

Officers were again called to the area shortly before 2:45 a.m. for a report of gunshots on the 900 block of Bainbridge Street.

There, they found a 19-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was also placed in stable condition at Jefferson.

Student Beatdown On Subway Platform Caught On Video

Source:  Daily Mail
By Regina Medina, Apr. 23, 2015, Philly.com

SEPTA POLICE are investigating a vicious attack on two Benjamin Franklin High School students caught on video Tuesday on a subway platform in the Spring Garden station, officials said yesterday.

Nobody involved in the beating - including the victims - reported the brutal crime to SEPTA police, Philadelphia police or school district officials, SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel III said.

In the video, time-stamped just after 3:15 p.m., about a dozen teens - all believed to be students, according to officials - appear to be participating in the attack or egging it on. At one point, one of the assailants, wearing a light gray sweatshirt with the hood covering his head, fell onto the tracks. He quickly pulled himself back onto the platform and joined the fray once again. A girl is seen trying to videotape the pummeling of a male victim, and one assailant also stomped on the victim's head.

The attack lasted 1 minute, 5 seconds, SEPTA officials said.

"It's an outrageous event. This is so dangerous, it's not even funny," Nestel told reporters at a news conference. "We have operating trains down there. There are passengers waiting for the train . . . It's horrendous."

Philly Dems Wanted $340G In 'Street Money'--Wolf Said No

Tom Fitzgerald, Nov. 3, 2014, Philly.com

It's a Philadelphia tradition: Democratic candidates for governor and even president are asked to give hundreds of thousands of dollars in "street money" to the party's ward leaders to finance get-out-the-vote operations in the city on Election Day. They usually say yes.

Tom Wolf, asked for $340,000, said no.

The Democratic gubernatorial nominee declined to reach into his campaign fund for the money, saying he wanted to win by appealing to voters on issues and offering the chance to defeat Gov. Corbett, who remains unpopular in the city.

Philly State Sen: 'I Am The F-ing Senator, I do What The F- I Want, And Ain't Nobody Going To Change Me'

Sen. LeAnna Washington
By Jessica Parks, Oct. 24, 2014, Philly.com

State Sen. LeAnna Washington will plead guilty to accusations that she used taxpayer resources to plan political fund-raisers, her attorney said in court Friday.

Washington, a Democrat who represents parts of Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties, faces two felony charges of theft of services and conflict of interest. A hearing will be scheduled for next Thursday or Friday, where she will plead guilty to one or both charges, lawyer Henry Hockeimer said.

If convicted of both counts, Washington, 69, could have faced up to 12 years in jail. It's unclear whether her negotiated plea will include jail time.

Senior Deputy Attorney General Susan DiGiacomo said the attorneys will meet Monday to finalize paperwork, but Washington "will have to show up for the plea."

By Associated Press, Aug. 1, 2014, Dailymail.co.uk

A 3-year-old girl who was sitting on her front porch getting her hair done was killed Friday night when a man opened fire during an argument, police and witnesses said.

Three adults were injured.

The shooting happened at about 9:40 p.m. in the Grays Ferry section of the city.

Philadelphia Police Capt. Michael Gormley told the news station two men were arguing on the street when one pulled out a gun and started firing.

Witnesses said a stray bullet hit the girl in the left side of her chest as she was getting her hair done, and the shooter fled on a bicycle.

Officers arriving at the scene put the child in their patrol car and rushed her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:21 p.m., Gormley said.

'There's nothing much you can say about this tragedy,' Mike Collins, the victim's cousin, told the local NBC station.

William G. Bowen
By Associated Press, May 18, 2014, News.Yahoo.com

HAVERFORD, Pa. (AP) — A commencement speaker on Sunday blasted college students as "immature" and "arrogant" for protesting another speaker who then decided to withdraw.

William Bowen, former president of Princeton University, used his commencement speech at Haverford College outside Philadelphia to criticize students who campaigned against Robert Birgeneau, former chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley.

Birgeneau is among several commencement speakers who canceled their appearances this spring amid student protests.

More than 40 students and three professors had protested Birgeneau's invitation to speak, objecting to his handling of a 2011 incident at Berkeley in which police used force at a student protest during the Occupy movement. The group wanted Birgeneau to apologize, support payments for victims and write a letter to Haverford students explaining his position on the events and "what you learned from them."

Birgeneau, who was also supposed to receive an honorary degree from Haverford, refused those demands and others in a terse email.

Bowen chastised students in his speech for driving Birgeneau away, The Philadelphia Inquirer (http://bit.ly/1sHYBcW ) reported.

"I am disappointed that those who wanted to criticize Birgeneau's handling of events at Berkeley chose to send him such an intemperate list of 'demands,'" Bowen said Sunday. "In my view, they should have encouraged him to come and engage in a genuine discussion, not to come, tail between his legs, to respond to an indictment that a self-chosen jury had reached without hearing counterarguments."

By Chris Stigall, Mar. 21, 2014, CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Chris Stigall talked to former CBS News Reporter Sharyl Attkisson this morning on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT about the trouble reporters have to deal with while covering politicians and the government, as well as the current state of investigative reporting.

Responding to comments regarding a Phoenix television reporter yesterday who initially claimed that the White House pre-screens questions from reporters, Attkisson said, “I wouldn’t surprised if sometimes there is that level of cooperation with some questions. If I need something answered from the White House and they won’t tell me, I’ll call our White House Correspondent…"

By Allan West, Mar. 26, 2014
New update in the Temple University student assault case: NBC Philadelphia reports, “Philadelphia Police said a 15-yr-old girl has been arrested Tuesday and is expected to be charged with aggravated assault for allegedly hitting a 19-year-old Temple University student in the face with the brick, nearly knocking her teeth out. Four other teens, a 17-year-old, two 15-year-olds and a 14-year-old, have also been taken into custody related to the assault. Detectives say these teens may also be arrested soon.
The arrest came four days after the unprovoked brick attack. The 19-year-old woman, was walking with her 20-year-old boyfriend around 6 p.m. on Friday evening when she says a group of girls and boys began taunting and touching them. When they pushed back, the girls allegedly started swinging. “My boyfriend pushed the girl away from me that hit me in the face and then the girl’s sister came at me with a brick,” said the victim, who asked that her identity not be shared.
What a shame this young lady withholds her identity as the victim, undoubtedly due to fear. We’ve come to a point in America where victims continue to live in fear for retribution attacks. Her boyfriend was interviewed, but he asked that his face not be shown on camera.
