Fake ads bearing the Star of David were reported around Szczecin in north-west Poland on Monday, claiming that the buildings will soon be confiscated and handed over to Jewish owners.

 In France, Jewish residents were singled out and their homes spray-painted with Stars of David and Neo-Nazi slurs. One resident, Oliver Feldman, said that “I fear for my wife, for my children, for my own safety…every day I ask if it’ll happen again,” Ynet reported. In addition, 100 gravestones were desecrated and spray-painted with Swastikas close to Strasbourg.

Pro-Al Qaeda jihadis are issuing a series of directives ahead of next month’s Olympics urging their followers to carry out so-called 'lone wolf' attacks at the Rio Games, according to material obtained by The Foreign Desk.

In a list published on social media, jihadis are advised to target American, British, French and Israeli athletes with the notion that “One small knife attack against Americans/Israelis in these places will have bigger media effect than any other attacks anywhere else in sha Allah.”

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has applied for political asylum in France after a minister indicated that it might be viewed favourably. The Elysee Palace promptly rejected the request with a polite ‘non’.

In an open letter to French President Francois Hollande published today by Le Monde, the fugitive alleges he is a victim of persecution by the US government over what he claims is the exposure of US human rights violations and controversial practices. According to the RT news service, Assange’s plea said:

For the simple fact of publishing information meriting public interest that whistleblowers had passed to WikiLeaks, I am personally prosecuted for espionage, conspiracy, theft or compromise of confidential US government information and computer violations, risking life imprisonment or worse”.

Four people are in custody in connection to a beheading and explosion at a gas factory in south-eastern France - and police are still searching buildings for evidence.

Heavily armed police investigating this morning's brutal terror attack in France have removed a woman and child from the home of Yassine Salhi - the suspected Islamist accused of beheading his boss and trying to blow up the American-owned gas factory.

He was known to factory personnel because he came in regularly for deliveries, Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins said.

Police swooped on the apartment building in Saint-Priest, in the suburbs of the city of Lyon, just hours after the 30-year-old delivery driver was arrested on suspicion of writing Arabic slogans on his employer's severed head and hanging it on a fence outside the nearby headquarters of Air Products.

Salhi is accused of going on to crash his Ford Fusion delivery van through the factory's gates before ramming it into several large gas cannisters left in the car park - apparently in the hope they would explode and destroy the entire factory complex.

The explosions were relatively small, however, leaving just two factory workers with non life-threatening injuries.

The murdered man - who French media say owned the delivery company Salhi worked for - is believed to have been killed elsewhere before his corpse was dumped at the Air Products factory site in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier and his head impaled on a fence 30 feet away surrounded by homemade Islamist flags.

France Warns Iran Over Nuclear Deal as Deadline Nears

ANKARA/PARIS (Reuters) - France warned on Wednesday it was ready to block a final deal between Iran and the six major powers on Iran's nuclear program unless Tehran provided inspectors access to all installations, including military sites.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, last week ruled out international inspection of Iran's military sites or access to nuclear scientists under any agreement. Iran's military leaders echoed his remarks.

"France will not accept (a deal) if it is not clear that inspections can be done at all Iranian installations, including military sites," French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told lawmakers in Paris.

As talks resumed in Vienna on Wednesday to bridge gaps in negotiating positions before a June 30 deadline, the United States said it was not considering an extension, despite comments from France and Iran indicating wiggle room.

Hundreds Of Jewish Graves Vandalized In French Cemetery

PARIS (AP) — Hundreds of graves have been vandalized at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France, in what the president called an “odious and barbaric” anti-Semitic act against French values.

The vandalism comes at a time of growing insecurity among French Jews and amid general religious tensions in Europe, after Islamic radicals attacked a kosher market and a satirical newspaper in Paris last month and similar attacks hit Denmark this weekend.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said in a statement Sunday that a criminal investigation team is at the damaged cemetery in Sarre-Union, near the German border, and authorities will do “everything” to pursue the vandals.

He had reportedly interviewed families of Charlie Hebdo victims in the hours after the attack.

It is not known if his decision to commit suicide has any link to the Charlie Hebdo killings.

The small-circulation paper generally is left-leaning, using cartoons and fake news reports to take shots at those generally in powerful positions.

France’s top security official says the driver of the van then stabbed himself several times after the incident.

Authorities say 11 people, including the driver, were injured in the incident which occurred in the town Nantes on a busy market full of holiday shoppers.

The prosecutor in Dijon said the driver behind the attack in that city has a long history of severe mental illness and no links to terrorism.

French Say Au Revoir To France--Over 2 Million French People Now Live Abroad

The land of 400 cheeses, the birthplace of Molière and Coco Chanel, is facing an unprecedented exodus. Up to 2.5 million French people now live abroad, and more are bidding “au revoir” each year.

A French parliamentary commission of inquiry is due to publish its report on emigration on Tuesday, but Le Figaro reported yesterday that because of a political dispute among its members over the reasons for the exodus, a “counter-report” by the opposition right-wing is to be released as an annex.

Centre-right deputies are convinced that the people who are the “lifeblood” of France are leaving because of “the impression that it’s impossible to succeed”, said Luc Chatel, secretary general of the UMP, who chaired the commission.

There is “an anti-work mentality, absurd fiscal pressure, a lack of promotion prospects, and the burden of debt hanging over future generations,” he told Le Figaro. However, the report’s author Yann Galut, a Socialist deputy, said the UMP was unhappy because it had been unable to prove that a “massive exile” had taken place since the election of President François Hollande in 2012.

Did the French just elect a self-described socialist who wants to raise taxes on the rich? Yes, they did. Is President Barack Obama asking for four more years with an economic philosophy similar to that of the new French president? Yes, he is.

In France, those earning over a million euros would face a tax rate of 75 percent. And one of Francois Hollande's first acts as new president of France was to reverse his predecessor's course and lower the retirement age from 62 to 60 -- this in a country whose projected unfunded pension liabilities for its living citizens are about $8.37 trillion, or 300 percent of its $2.774 trillion gross domestic product. The United States' unfunded Social Security, Medicare and prescription drug benefits liability for its living citizens is about $50 trillion, or 333 percent of our current $15 trillion GDP.

France is a county whose debt is 90 percent of its GDP (U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio is over 100 percent). It had zero GDP growth in the first quarter of 2012 and has an unemployment rate of 10.2 percent. Taxes, as a percent of GDP, are 56 percent. (U.S. state, local and federal tax take is 33 percent of GDP, excluding the dollar value of government-issued mandates on the private sector).
France is a mess. Hollande, like Obama, pays no attention to the many examples of government-controlled economies versus those where government takes less from people and relies on the private sector to create jobs.
Let's look at just one such example. Hong Kong became a British colony following the first Opium War in the mid-1800s. As mainland China fell to communist control a century later, many Chinese migrants and corporations fled to the island. In 1961, Britain named Sir John Cowperthwaite, a proponent of the Austrian school of free-market economics, as financial secretary of Hong Kong. Residents of Hong Kong faced a maximum 15 percent in personal taxes, no tariffs, no subsidies, no government borrowing and minimal red tape. Cowperthwaite called it "positive non-intervention."
Hong Kong, under his guidance, saw a 50 percent rise in wages and a two-thirds fall in the number of households in acute poverty. Exports rose by 14 percent a year, as Hong Kong evolved from a trading post to a major regional hub and manufacturing base. Hong Kong is a water-surrounded rock with no natural resources -- other than the industry of its people.
In his first budget speech, Cowperthwaite said: "In the long run, the aggregate of decisions of individual businessmen, exercising individual judgment in a free economy, even if often mistaken, is less likely to do harm than the centralized decisions of a government, and certainly the harm is likely to be counteracted faster."
About Hong Kong, economist Milton Friedman wrote: "At the end of World War II, Hong Kong was a dirt-poor island with a per-capita income about one-quarter that of Britain's. By 1997, when sovereignty was transferred to China, its per-capita income was roughly equal to that of the departing colonial power. ... That was a striking demonstration of the productivity of freedom, of what people can do when they are left free to pursue their own interests."
In the U.S., we watch the spectacle of Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, explaining to Congress why his company lost $2 billion in private money. Meanwhile, the federal government squanders many times more by "investing" public money in now-bankrupt or soon-to-be bankrupt "green" companies.
After nearly four years of spending with dismal results, Obama blames the results on an "inherited" economy that was worse than he thought. He also blames the dastardly Republicans for stopping him from spending the requisite amount of money to get things right.
Bill Clinton, too, pushed for a federal takeover of health care. In fact, everything ObamaCare purports to achieve HillaryCare set out to do. But when Clinton saw negative polls on HillaryCare and realized he overreached, he backed up.
Obama saw that parts of ObamaCare polled well, like refusing to allow rejection based on pre-existing illness and requiring insurance companies to cover the "children" of policyholders. To keep the costs down, Obama called for an individual mandate, believing that to "bend the cost curve" he must require young, healthy types to get insurance or pay a fee for not doing so. Obama assumed that once people took a closer look at ObamaCare, resistance would fade. It hasn't. If anything, ObamaCare is more unpopular now than ever.
In France, not only did the voters elect a socialist, they gave him enough seats in parliament so that his agenda can get passed without compromise. For two years, Obama had that kind of power. It gave us ObamaCare, "stimulus" and a tepid recovery.
Poor France.

Where and How European Jews Are Winning

Jews are dramatically under attack in France, but Judaism is booming in Italy.

The mounting campaign against French Jews was notably on display with attacks against Parisian synagogues last week, and with big anti-Israel demonstrations over the weekend despite an official ban. Some Jews are increasingly considering emigration — the French emigration rate to Israel is up 60% — and many others are attempting to conceal their religious identity.

As I have written in some detail, things are quite different in Italy [1], where big pro-Israel demonstrations are common, kosher restaurants, especially in Rome (the biggest Italian Jewish community at around 15,000), are very popular, the old Jewish quarter around the synagogue has become trendy and pricy, and Jewish festivals abound. There is even a trend, especially and unexpectedly in the south, towards conversion to Judaism. The chief rabbi of Naples recently wrote to the governors of the six southern provinces, proposing an annual day of commemoration of the forced conversion of the southern Italian Jews during the Inquisition, and some of the governors are likely to embrace the proposal.

Why the striking contrast between France and Italy? Why are the French Jews so frightened, while the Italians are doing so well? There are many differences, some historic, others linked to the contemporary behavior of the Jewish communities. I think the lessons from the Italian Jewish revival should be taken to heart by Jewish communities elsewhere, including the United States.

First, the very different national traditions. Keep in mind that France has the largest Jewish community in Europe, while Italy’s is one of the tiniest.

Most people think “Germany” when they think about European antisemitism, but modern mass antisemitism was a late 19th century French invention that subsequently spread to other Western countries. Its infamous early appearance was the Dreyfus Affair, when a Jewish military officer was falsely accused and then convicted of treason. Theodor Herzl attended the trial, concluding that Jews would never be welcome in Europe, and needed their own state. Thus was Zionism born.
