Charlie Hebdo Protests Erupt Across Southern Asia

Khurram Shahzad, Jan. 23, 2015, AFP

The clashes broke out when police fired smoke canisters and shot into the air to disperse a group of protestors who began chanting "Down with Charlie Hebdo" after emerging from mosques.

Friday's rally in Islamabad was led by the hardline Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party, and though peaceful demonstrators burned French, British and American flags, while urging Pakistan to cut ties with Paris and calling for a boycott of French products.

Attacks Challenge 'Lone Wolf' Terrorist Theory

Michel Moutot, Jan. 18, 2015, AFP

Although they may have acted without direct instructions from above, the Kouachi brothers had training from Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), its Yemen branch, and struck a top target on Al-Qaeda's "most-wanted" list.

The concept of "lone wolves" emerged at a time when Western observers were still struggling to understand the apparently diffuse threat from global jihadists -- that operated with less clear-cut structures than the major terrorist organisations of the 20th century.

Iran General Killed With Hezbollah Fighters In Israel Raid

Sara Hussein and Serene Assir, Jan. 19, 2015, AFP

The attack on Sunday near Quneitra on the Syrian-controlled side of the Golan Heights enraged Hezbollah's supporters, but analysts said the group would avoid a major escalation with Israel.

Once solely focused on fighting Israel, Hezbollah is now deeply involved in the war in neighbouring Syria, where it backs President Bashar al-Assad.

Cameron said the two had agreed to set up "a joint group to identify what more we can do to counter the rise of domestic violent extremism and to learn from one another."

He described the battle facing Western governments as a "long, patient and hard struggle" and dubbed the enemy a "poisonous fanatical death cult ... perverting the religion of Islam."

Keystone Pipeline Bill Advances Bill Advances In US Senate

AFP, Jan. 12, 2015, Yahoo! News

The legislation easily passed the House last week. It cleared its first major hurdle in the Republican-controlled Senate, advancing on a 63-32 vote, including 11 Democratic supporters.

But the count fell short of the 67-vote threshold that the bill will need to reach to override a veto should Obama follow through on his threat to veto the measure.

Erdogan Says Muslims, Not Columbus, Discovered Americas

AFP, November 15, 2014, Yahoo! News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that the Americas were discovered by Muslims in the 12th century, nearly three centuries before Christopher Columbus set foot there.

"Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th century. Muslims discovered America in 1178, not Christopher Columbus," the conservative president said in a televised speech during an Istanbul summit of Muslim leaders from Latin America.

"Muslim sailors arrived in America from 1178. Columbus mentioned the existence of a mosque on a hill on the Cuban coast," Erdogan said.

By Washington (AFP)  / Yahoo News, Mar. 28, 2014
Social media erupted in outrage and counter-attacks Friday after US comedian Stephen Colbert used language that mocked Asian Americans in what was intended as an anti-racist jibe.
Colbert, who is liberal but parodies a blustery conservative on his late night talk show, took aim at the Washington Redskins football team whose name is considered offensive by many Native Americans.
Colbert mocked team owner Dan Snyder who has announced a fund to support Native Americans while rejecting calls to change the name.
On Twitter and on his "Colbert Report" show on the Comedy Central network, Colbert said: "I am willing to show the Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever."
Activists voiced outrage at the remark, which played on mocking imitations of East Asian languages. A conversation, under the hashtag #CancelColbert, was near the top of topics trending on Twitter Friday.
