State: 'Too Soon To Tell' If ISIS Behind Bloody 3 Continent-Wide Attacks

By Barbara Boland, Jun. 26, 2015, Washington Examiner

The State Department could not confirm whether the Islamic State was behind bloody terrorist attacks that rocked three continents Friday, though the extremists themselves celebrated the attacks across Twitter.

Spokesperson John Kirby cited the newness of the attacks while explaining that the State Department cannot answer whether the terrorist group was involved or coordinated Friday's gruesome spate of attacks.

Islamic State supporters lacked the State Department's reticence, gleefully trumpeting the attacks with a hashtag celebrating "Bloody Friday," reported Vocativ. "This Friday is a holiday for the Muslims," one Islamic State supporter wrote.

"The harvest of the Caliphate to Friday, 9th of Ramada: Explosion in a mosque in Kuwait, explosion in a tourist hotel in Tunisia and attacking gas company in France," tweeted another Islamic State supporter. "The good tidings of Friday: Factory in France, hotel in Tunisia, mosque in Kuwait, battles in Kobane, conquests in Haksaka," read another tweet.

Iran Leader Rules Out Key Aspects Of Any Nuke Deal

By Associated Press, May 20, 2015, CBS News

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's supreme leader vowed Wednesday he will not allow international inspection of Iran's military sites or access to Iranian scientists under any nuclear agreement with world powers.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told military commanders Wednesday that Iran will resist "coercion and excessive demands" from America and other world powers.

Negotiators from Iran and a six nation group -- the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany -- have launched a new round of talks in Vienna focused on reaching a final deal that curbs Iran's nuclear program in return for lifting economic sanctions. The two sides reached a framework agreement in March and hope to strike a final deal by June 30.

A fact sheet on the framework accord issued by the U.S. State Department said Iran would be required to grant the U.N. nuclear agency access to any "suspicious sites."

California Has No Ban On Use Of Private Email By Officials

By CBS Los Angeles, Mar. 19, 2015, Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California has no blanket policy restricting the use of personal email accounts to conduct government business, and it’s among about two dozen states that have no clear rules or precedent-setting cases addressing whether those communications are public records.

The lack of clear policy in California, advocates say, could allow officials to shield sensitive electronic communications from public scrutiny by using personal email accounts.

State Attorney General Kamala Harris, a candidate for U.S. Senate, disclosed Wednesday that she uses a private email account to communicate with senior staff in rare instances.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has faced sharp criticism over her use of a private email account while at the State Department and has acknowledged deleting thousands of them.

Delays Plague Hillary Clinton's State Dept. Files

Stephen Braun, Dec. 10, 2014, AP

The State Department has failed to turn over government documents covering Hillary Rodham Clinton's tenure as secretary of state that The Associated Press and others requested under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act ahead of her presumptive presidential campaign. They include one request AP made four years ago and others pending for more than one year.

The agency already has missed deadlines it set for itself to turn over the material.

Obama Won’t Extend This NBA Player’s Work Visa Because He’s Israeli

Christian Datoc, Nov. 14, 2014, Daily Caller

In a surprise move, the Obama administration declined to extend a valid, P1 work visa for Gal Mekel, an Israeli NBA free agent.

The Indiana Pacers met with Mekel on Nov. 5 to discuss imminently signing the third year guard, yet because of the State Department’s refusal, ”to move up the expiration date on Mekel’s visa even by one day, the Pacers, who had only 9 players on their active roster, backed out of the deal to sign another player before their waiver lapsed,” reports Breitbart.

FLASHBACK: State Dept Promotes Muslim Cleric Who Backed Fatwa On ‘Killing Of U.S. Soldiers’

Abdallah Bin Bayyah / Wikimedia Commons
By Adam Kredo, May 23, 2014, Freebeacon.com

The State Department’s Counter Terrorism (CT) Bureau promoted on Friday a controversial Muslim scholar whose organization has reportedly backed Hamas and endorsed a fatwa authorizing the murder of U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

The CT bureau on Friday tweeted out a link to the official website of Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, the vice president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), a controversial organization founded by a Muslim Brotherhood leader “who has called for the death of Jews and Americans and himself is banned from visiting the U.S.,” according to Fox News.

Bin Bayyah is reported to have been one of several clerics who endorsed a 2004 fatwa that endorsed resistance against Americans fighting in Iraq, PJ Media reported in 2013, when Bin Bayyah met with Obama’s National Security Council staff at the White House.

The CT Bureau tweet linked to a press release on Bin Bayyah’s site condemning the kidnapping of hundreds of Nigerian girls by the Boko Haram group.

However, Bin Bayyah himself has been known to back controversial causes.

Bin Bayyah has “urged the U.N. to criminalize blasphemy,” according to reports, and spoke “out in favor of Hamas,” the terror group that rules over the West Bank.

The cleric also issued a fatwa in 2009 “barring ‘all forms of normalization’ with Israel,” according to Fox.

The 2004 fatwa on Iraq stated that “resisting occupation troops” is a “duty” for all Muslims, according to reports.

Terrorism analyst Patrick Poole said that the State Department must more carefully choose the Muslim leaders it promotes.

State Department Orders 5,000 BODY BAGS And 160,000 Hazmat Suits For African Ebola Outbreak

By David Martosko, Sept. 15, 2014, Dailymail.co.uk

The U.S. Agency for International Development ordered 5,000 body bags from a Florida company last month as part of its planned response to an outbreak of the Ebola virus in western Africa.

And as President Obama prepares to enlarge America's aid to affected countries, a company that makes protective clothing says the State Department, which oversees USAID, has invited bids for 160,000 hazmat suits.

The body-bag purchase came on August 19, just after the World Health Organization said the epidemic had killed 1,000 people. That death toll is now greater than 2,400.

The size of the contracts indicates how seriously governments are taking the threat, especially considering that all 5,000 body bags were destined only for Liberia – one of three countries whose citizens have been hammered with new disease cases and paralyzed with fear.

And the purchase says nothing about what resources might be coming as part of other nations' contributions.

Barack Obama will travel to Atlanta on Tuesday for a briefing with experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His chief spokesman said Monday that the president will announce new levels of support from the U.S. to fight the disease.

The CDC has begun to warn health care workers and hospital administrators to be on the lookout for potential Ebola cases. 'Now is the time to prepare,' reads part of a six-page 'checklist' being distributed nationwide.

The agency has already deployed about 100 of its own workers to Africa, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters during his daily briefing.

'This is, if not the largest, among the largest deployments of CDC personnel – ever,' he said.

America, Earnest added, 'has a unique responsibility to step up in the midst of an international crisis. ... Our doctors and scientists are some of the best in the world.'

The federal government as a whole has allocated $100 million in financing and other resources to assist what has become a continent-wide race against the clock to stamp out a crafty pathogen before it can spread beyond hope of containment.

By Reuters, Apr. 19, 2014

The United States has taken steps to release a $450 million (267.9 million pounds) installment of frozen Iranian funds following a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verifying that Iran is living up to its part of a landmark nuclear pact with world powers, the U.S. State Department said on Thursday.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said that “all sides have kept the commitments made” under the agreement. She said that “as Iran remains in line with its commitments,” the United States, France, Germany, Britain, China, Russia and the European Union “will continue to uphold our commitments as well.”

The report by the U.N. nuclear agency showed that Iran had – as stipulated under the November 24 agreement – diluted half of its higher-grade enriched uranium reserve to a fissile content less prone to bomb proliferation. Tehran has also continued to convert the other half of its stock of uranium gas refined to a 20 percent fissile purity, the IAEA report said.

By Tim Graham, Mar. 22, 2014, Newsbusters
The Russians are firing back at CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour for some Thursday remarks on her CNN International show about Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations. Amanpour mocked his daughter for working as a journalist for Russia Today in New York, and covering her father.

Churkin sent a letter to Amanpour pointing out that if that’s a familial conflict, then what about her “courtship” and marriage to former State Department spokesman Jamie Rubin? They were married in 1998 right in the middle of his Clinton administration service, where he was touted as Madeleine Albright's right-hand man.
Amanpour reported:
And one more note: we continue to reach out to the Russian government for their comment, including officials such as U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin. We haven't had much luck, but perhaps people like Churkin feel they don't really have to leave their comfort zone. Churkin's own daughter is the U.S.-based reporter for "Russia Today" in New York. She's shown here, quizzing U.S. State Department spokesman Jen Psaki over this whole Ukraine crisis. And in the past, she's even reported on her own father.
Churkin replied:
Dear Ms. Amanpour,
I am taken aback by the personal attacks you resorted to in your show on March 20. I have known you for many years (including through a number of on-the-air interviews) and used to respect you professionally. So it was somewhat startling that my inability to give another interview provoked such an outburst.
