Paul: Some In D.C. Hoping For Terror Attack To Blame Him

Sen. Rand Paul said Sunday evening that some people in Washington are “secretly” hoping for a terrorist attack to hit the U.S. to make him look bad.

In a speech on the Senate floor, Paul railed against those accusing him of jeopardizing national security by stalling efforts to renew surveillance programs.

“People here in town think I’m making a huge mistake,” Paul said. “Some of them, I think, secretly want there to be an attack on the United States so they can blame it on me.”

Paul committed Saturday to forcing expiring provisions of the PATRIOT Act to lapse, which will occur at midnight tonight — even as he admitted that surveillance reform legislation dubbed the USA Freedom Act is likely to pass at some point. Among the provisions that will expire is the authority the National Security Agency has used to justify the bulk phone records program exposed by Edward Snowden.

Senators Flash Anger At Paul And Vice Versa

Tempers are flaring in the Senate.

With lawmakers slated to take procedural votes later this evening on a bill to reform the PATRIOT Act, Sens. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) refused to yield the floor to fellow Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who has promised to force a sunset of key parts national security law. The spat prompted a terse back-and-forth during a rare Sunday session prompted by Paul’s refusal earlier this month to allow votes on the issue.

With dozens of Senate onlookers donning “Stand with Rand” T-Shirts, Paul tried to interject as Coats and McCain were speaking in defense of of the National Security Agency. But McCain and Coats wouldn’t yield the floor.

Paul “needs to learn the rules of the Senate,” McCain sniped at the Kentucky Republican.

Paul Takes Heat On Patriot Act, Isis Stances

Republican presidential hopeful George Pataki says GOP rival Rand Paul is putting the nation at risk for political purposes with his legislative tactics stalling the extension of the Patriot Act.

Pataki was New York governor in 2001 when the 9/11 terrorists struck. He says Paul's maneuvers in the Senate can only suspend parts of the anti-terrorism act for several days, not block them permanently, so letting those provisions expire has no value even for people who oppose them. He says Paul is "putting Americans at risk for a political reason."

The National Security Agency stands to lose legal authority to collect and search domestic phone records for connections to international terrorists unless senators find a way Sunday to avoid a lapse. Paul and other civil liberties advocates argue surveillance programs authorized by the NSA have not produced significant results in protecting Americans from terrorism.

Surveillance Powers Lapse With No Deal In Senate

WASHINGTON (AP) -- For the first time since Sept. 11, 2001, the Congress curtailed the National Security Agency's authority to track suspected terrorists as lawmakers struggled to restore approval for mass collection of phone records and other surveillance methods.

No solution was likely before Tuesday at the earliest, and the Republican lawmaker who triggered the gridlock took credit in a message to supporters that also sought donations to his presidential campaign.

"Yesterday, I forced the expiration of the NSA's illegal spying program. Contribute $5 now to show your support," tweeted Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.

While Paul sought to capitalize on his position, House-passed legislation was stalled in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other leading Republicans sought changes.

Former CBS News Reporter Sharyl Attkisson Claims Existence Of Obama Enemies' List

Sharyl Attkisson is an investigative journalist who became the story when she quit CBS News after two decades amid allegations that the network refused to run some of her stories that were critical of President Barack Obama. Ahead of the Tuesday release of her book Stonewalled: My Fight for Truth Against the Forces of Obstruction, Intimidation, and Harassment in Obama’s Washington, she spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her struggles with CBS executives and her assertion that her computers were hacked, possibly by Obama operatives.

THR reached out for a response from CBS News, but the organization declined to comment.

 THR: Who did you tell at CBS that your computers were hacked?

The first person I spoke to was Washington bureau chief Chris Isham.

 THR: Did he believe you?

He appeared to.

 THR: Did CBS care? Did they do anything about it?

God, you know, there’s a lot of people there. He seemed to care. He hired a separate computer forensics firm to look at the computers. They, too, agreed that there had been highly sophisticated remote intrusion of my computers. They decided to dig deeper and embark upon a process that spanned a number of months, during which time the situation with the Associated Press and the government spying on Fox News reporter James Rosen was disclosed, as well as Edward Snowden’s NSA information.


 THR: Did they ever find out who hacked your computers and spied on you?

I don’t believe their computer forensics team concluded who spied on me.

Liberal actress Maggie Gyllenhaal talked to Time magazine for the August 18 issue and complained about Barack Obama. After writer Belinda Luscombe noted that "you've said President Obama has broken your heart," the actress derided, "I really believed in him, and I’m not sure what he believes in anymore."

Asked why, she added, "The way he’s handled the NSA stuff...I hope for a leader who will stand up and be unpopular." Offered an opportunity to take a position on the Israel/Gaza conflict (one that could be unpopular), Gyllenhall dodged, "What I’ve been doing is trying to read as much as I can and to think and feel each day what my position is." War On Terror: It's now clear that ex-NSA contractor Ed Snowden and his journalist sidekick Glenn Greenwald have an agenda beyond exposing spying abuses. They're really aiding and abetting the Islamist enemy.

By releasing the names of several Muslim terrorist targets under surveillance by the NSA and FBI in a new expose — "Under Surveillance: Meet the Muslim-American Leaders the FBI and NSA Have Been Spying On" — Snowden and his mouthpiece Greenwald have tipped off the enemy and jeopardized major counterterror investigations.

They make it seem as if the five American Muslim leaders they found listed in NSA and FBI surveillance records were victims of anti-Muslim prejudice, while glossing over the raft of counterterror evidence against them. In fact, the government has court-approved cause to spy on them.

One of the FBI's terrorist targets — a subject of a FISA court warrant — is the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington, a group Greenwald describes as a harmless "civil-rights organization," though the FBI has called it a "Hamas front" and the Justice Department has implicated it in a plot to raise millions for Palestinian terrorists.

A federal judge OK'd warrants to read CAIR chief Nihad Awad's email accounts. The FBI showed Awad may be engaged in "certain criminal activity on behalf of a foreign power." No wonder the agency cut off ties to CAIR and its Palestinian leader.

Greenwald has pocketed thousands of dollars speaking at CAIR fundraising banquets.

The man who helped bring about the most significant leak in American intelligence history is to reveal names of US citizens targeted by their own government in what he promises will be the “biggest” revelation from nearly 2m classified files.

Glenn Greenwald, the journalist who received the trove of documents from Edward Snowden, a former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, told The Sunday Times that Snowden’s legacy would be “shaped in large part” by this “finishing piece” still to come.

His plan to publish names will further unnerve an American intelligence establishment already reeling from 11 months of revelations about US government surveillance activities.

Greenwald, who is promoting his book No Place To Hide and is trailed by a documentary crew wherever he goes, was speaking in a boutique hotel near Harvard, where he was to appear with Noam Chomsky, the octogenarian leftist academic.

“One of the big questions when it comes to domestic spying is, ‘Who have been the NSA’s specific targets?’," he said.

“Are they political critics and dissidents and activists? Are they genuinely people we’d regard as terrorists?

What are the metrics and calculations that go into choosing those targets and what is done with the surveillance that is conducted? Those are the kinds of questions that I want to still answer.”

Greenwald said the names would be published via The Intercept, a website funded by Pierre Omidyar, the billionaire founder and chairman of eBay. Greenwald left The Guardian, which published most of the Snowden revelations, last autumn to work for Omidyar.

“As with a fireworks show, you want to save your best for last,” Greenwald told GQ magazine. “The last one is the one where the sky is all covered in spectacular multicoloured hues.”

The publication last week of Greenwald’s book about the story behind Snowden’s leaks has re-ignited controversy about the motives of the young computer technician, who fled to Hong Kong nearly a year ago and was then given refuge by Russia, which has resisted US demands to extradite him.
