Gay Marriage vs. Religious Liberty

By Daniel John Sobieski, Apr. 30, 2015, AmericanThinker.com

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case to determine whether the Constitution requires states to issue same-sex marriage licenses and requires other states to honor same-sex marriages performed in those states. A primary argument by the plaintiffs is that gay marriage is covered under the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment and that if straights can marry, then so can gays.

The counterargument is that marriage is a privilege and not a right, a union of one man and one woman sanctioned over millennia by virtually every culture and country over time as the stable foundation of any society, a framework for the bearing and rearing of children that are the future of any society:

That was the argument made by Investor’s Business Daily on the occasion of U.S. District Judge Vaughan Walker striking down California’s Proposition 8 defining marriage as between one man and one women which had passed in November 2008 with 52% of the vote:

Cummings Promises Justice For Freddie Gray In Fiery Comments At Funeral

By Ben Kamisar, Apr. 27, 2015, TheHill.com

“I’ve often said that our children are the living messages we send to the future we will never see, but now, our children are sending us to a future they will never see,” Cummings said during an emotional and fiery speech at Freddie Gray’s funeral.

“There is something wrong with that picture,” he said with a slight tremor in his voice.

“I’m in the twilight years, but I am telling you we will not rest we will not rest until we address this and see that justice is done,” he said, addressing Gray’s mother.

“Look at ‘em, mother. We will not rest. So it is our watch, it’s our watch. We will not fail you.”

Cummings asked all of the lawmakers in the church to stand up to show Gray’s mother that they would seek justice for her son.

The longtime Baltimore lawmaker also noted the presence of a number of media organizations at the crowded funeral.

“As I thought about the cameras,” Cummings said, “I wondered: Did anybody recognize Freddie when he was alive?”

Clinton Foundation In Campaign Tailspin

By Kenneth P. Vogel, Apr. 30, 2015, Politico.com

A handful of deep-pocketed donors are reconsidering their gifts to the $2 billion Clinton Foundation amid mounting questions about how it’s spending their money and suggestions of influence peddling, according to donors and others familiar with the foundation’s fundraising.

One major donor who contributed at least $500,000 to the foundation last year said a 2015 donation is less likely because of revelations about sloppy record-keeping and huge payments for travel and administrative costs.

“There are a lot of factors and the reputational is among them,” said the donor, who did not want to be identified discussing philanthropic plans that have not been finalized. “We had some questions about how the money was being spent — and that was long before the problems were in the press.”

At least three other major donors also are re-evaluating whether to continue giving large donations to the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, according to people familiar with its fundraising.

New Black Panther Head: Like Founding Fathers, We Are Willing To Kill For Black Nation

By Pam Key, Apr. 30, 2015, Breitbart.com

WARNING: Profanity/Strong Racial Language

This Week on the New Black Panther Party’s “Black Power Radio,” national chairman Hashim Nzinga said since America has “declared war on us,” evidenced by “military police in the black neighborhood” protecting the rich, the New Black Panthers should be looked upon as Founding Fathers who declare war and are “willing to die or kill to save our babies and to save a black nation that is dying before our eyes.”

Nzinga said, “America is about protecting the rich and the powerful.”

He added, “We pay taxes. They have declared war on us and it’s nothing but state racism.”

“So if we say we are at war, we should be applauded like George Washington,” Nzinga continued. “We should be applauded like Thomas Jefferson. We should be applauded like the Founding Fathers of the country.”

Britain Told U.N. Monitors of Active Iran Nuclear Procurement

By Louis Charbonneau, Apr. 30, 2015, Reuters.com

(Reuters) - Britain has informed a United Nations sanctions panel of an active Iranian nuclear procurement network linked to two blacklisted firms, according to a confidential report by the panel seen by Reuters.

The existence of such a network could add to Western concerns over whether Tehran can be trusted to adhere to a nuclear deal due by June 30 in which it would agree to restrict sensitive nuclear work in exchange for sanctions relief.

Talks between six major powers and Tehran are approaching the final stages after they hammered out a preliminary agreement on April 2, with Iran committing to reduce the number of centrifuges it operates and to other long-term nuclear limitations.

"The UK government informed the Panel on 20 April 2015 that it 'is aware of an active Iranian nuclear procurement network which has been associated with Iran's Centrifuge Technology Company (TESA) and Kalay Electric Company (KEC)'," the Panel of Experts said in its annual report. The panel monitors Iran's compliance with the U.N. sanctions regime.

The Other Man In The Van With Freddie Gray Breaks His Silence

Source:  Newsweek
By CBS Baltimore, Apr. 30, 2015

BALTIMORE (WJZ ) — From the beginning, the investigation into what killed Freddie Gray has centered on what happened inside the police transport van.

We knew there was another prisoner inside the van and tonight we hear from him.

WJZ‘s Mike Schuh is the first to speak with Donta Allen about what he heard.

“I am Donta Allen. I am the one who was in the van with Freddie Gray,” Allen said.

The one who the police commissioner calls the second prisoner in the van.

“The second prisoner who was picked up said that he didn’t see any harm done to Freddie at all,” Commissioner Anthony Batts said. “What he has said is that he heard Freddie thrashing about.”

But Allen wants to set something straight.

“All I did was go straight to the station, but I heard a little banging like he was banging his head,” he said.

Mayweather To Post Suge Knight's $10-Million Bail If He Wins Fight, Lawyer Says

 AP Photo/Las Vegas
Metropolitan Police Department
By Veronica Rocha , Stephen Ceasar and Marisa Gerber, Apr. 30, 2015, Latimes.com

Former rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight could soon be out of custody, but it all depends on if his good friend Floyd Mayweather Jr. is victorious Saturday in his history-making match against Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

Matthew Fletcher, Knight’s attorney, said that if Mayweather wins the bout, he expects the boxer to cover his client’s $10-million bail.

“They’re good friends,” Fletcher said. “That’s one of his wealthiest friends.”

A lawyer from Mayweather’s camp reached out to Fletcher several weeks ago and asked about the specifics of bailing Knight out, the attorney said.

Fletcher said he talked to Knight on Wednesday about the possibility of Mayweather pulling through with bail.

“Suge said, ‘Man, I was really going to pull for him to win, but now I’m going to have to pray for him to win,’” Fletcher said.

Mayweather’s camp couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Knight pleaded not guilty Thursday to murder and attempted murder for allegedly plowing his truck into two men at a Compton restaurant earlier this year.

Knight’s bail remains at $10 million, even though his attorney requested it be reduced by half. A jury trial was set for July 7.

The quick hearing was different than Knight’s previous court appearances. He didn’t collapse in court, express the need to vomit or complain of pain.

DWP trusts paid for steak dinners, trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas, audits find

By Jack Dolan, Apr. 30, 2015, Latimes.com

Two nonprofit trusts created by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and financed with more than $40 million from ratepayers paid millions to vendors without competitive bids, overpaid top managers and let them charge personal travel, gasoline and other items without filing expense reports, city audits released Thursday showed.

In five years, a handful of trust employees charged more than $660,000 to their publicly financed credit cards for things such as steak dinners and trips to Las Vegas, Hawaii and New Orleans, City Controller Ron Galperin said.

However, Galperin said, auditors did not find evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

One top administrator, who was making about $220,000 a year, used his trust-issued card for more than $30,000 worth of gas between 2010 and 2014, city auditors found.

The release of the audits ended a more than year-long political and legal battle waged against the city by the nonprofits' top administrators — particularly Brian D'Arcy, head of the city-owned utility's largest employees' union — to keep detailed spending records secret.

George Soros May Face a Monster Tax Bill

By Miles Weiss, Apr. 30, 2015, Bloomberg.com

George Soros likes to say the rich should pay more taxes. A substantial part of his wealth, though, comes from delaying them. While building a record as one of the world’s greatest investors, the 84-year-old billionaire used a loophole that allowed him to defer taxes on fees paid by clients and reinvest them in his fund, where they continued to grow tax-free. At the end of 2013, Soros—through Soros Fund Management—had amassed $13.3 billion through the use of deferrals, according to Irish regulatory filings by Soros.

Congress closed the loophole in 2008 and ordered hedge fund managers who used it to pay the accumulated taxes by 2017. A New York-based money manager such as Soros would be subject to a federal rate of 39.6 percent, combined state and city levies totaling 12 percent, and an additional 3.8 percent tax on investment income to pay for Obamacare, according to Andrew Needham, a tax partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore.

Applying those rates to Soros’s deferred income would create a tax bill of $6.7 billion. That calculation is based on publicly available information such as the Irish regulatory filings, which provide only a partial glimpse into Soros’s finances. The actual tax bill would be affected by factors specific to the billionaire. Soros declined to comment, according to Michael Vachon, a spokesman, as did Anthony Burke, an IRS spokesman.

Don't Buy The Mayweather Fight Until You Read This Police Report

Credit:  Eric Jamison, AP
By Alex Reimer, Apr. 29, 2015, Bostino.Streetwise.co

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a serial woman beater. Before you plop down $99.95 to watch his highly anticipated bout with Manny Pacquiao Saturday night, it's important you know that.

Mayweather has been charged with domestic violence six times, and served 60 days of a 90-day prison sentence in 2012 for assaulting the mother of his children in front of them.

Early in the morning on Sept. 9, 2010, Mayweather showed up at his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris' home – which he owned – and confronted her about dating NBA point guard C.J. Watson. At the time, Mayweather was living with his own girlfriend in a different house.

According to the police report, Mayweather returned to Harris' residence at around 5:00 a.m. Harris says in her voluntary statement he confronted her about her relationship with Watson, and started punching her in the back of the head. Mayweather reportedly threatened to kill Harris, and said he would "find someone to pour acid on her."

Mayweather's two young children, Zion and Koraun, both witnessed the beating. Koraun was 10 years old at the time, and issued a voluntary statement to law enforcement as well. He says one of Mayweather's associates attempted to block him from leaving the property, so he had to jump the fence in order to call for help.

Newsmax TV contributor Larry Elder received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week, and actors Jon Voight and Dean Cain were there to sing his praises at the induction ceremony.

Taking to the podium on sunny Monday afternoon, Voight described Elder as "a great patriot" who "understands freedom and love of America," My News L.A. reported.

"He is an American success story," said Cain. "Hard work wins."

Elder, known as the "Sage of South Central," is the host of "The Larry Elder Show" a talk radio show that ran for roughly two decades on 790 KABC in Los Angeles, and was syndicated on ABC Radio Networks.

Elder is the best-selling author of "The 10 Things You Can’t Say in America" and several other books. He also appeared on television in "Moral Court" and "The Larry Elder Show," and is a frequent panelist on Newsmax TV.

Elder became the 2,548th person to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, which also marked his 63rd birthday.

Elder thanked many people in his acceptance speech, including his fans. He said that years ago he was walking down the street when a fan told him, "I love you and I hate you. You’re like castor oil. It don’t taste good going down, but it’s good for you."

Elder posted several pictures of the ceremony on Twitter, where he boasts more than 60,000 followers.

In watching Baltimore burn, "progressives" run out of scapegoats. Over a week ago, a black man named Freddie Gray died after being arrested by police. Videotape shows Gray being dragged into a police van. Within a less than half an hour, his spine was somehow severed and he died seven days later.

Did an officer or the officers intentionally or inadvertently cause the injury? Did the vehicle suddenly stop, causing a possibly untethered or poorly tethered suspect/passenger to break his neck? Why was Gray stopped in the first place? Given that he ran from the police, did this provide a basis for pursuit, search and arrest? Does this not underscore the importance of police body cams and car-dash cams?

These are, of course, legitimate questions. And, in addition to the Baltimore police investigation, the Department of Justice announced that it, too, would examine the circumstances surrounding Gray's death.

So, why riot? Unlike Ferguson, where riots also took place, black Baltimore residents do not lack political power and representation. The mayor is black. The police commissioner and deputy commissioner are black. The police department is approximately 40 percent black, in a city with a black population of 63 percent. The new head of the Department of Justice, Loretta Lynch, is a black female, the second consecutive black person to run the Department of Justice. And, of course, the president of United States is black.

There's every reason, therefore, to believe that the investigations will be full, complete and thorough. This does not mean that the results will please everyone, but that the examination will be fair and open. After all, if a wildly popular mayor who received 84 percent of the vote cannot be trusted, who can?

This isn't Mississippi in 1955, where Emmett Till, a 14-year-old boy, was brutally murdered, only to have the obviously guilty killers acquitted by an all-white jury. This is not the 60s of white-run cities, with nearly all-white police departments policing all-black communities. In New York City, for example, most officers are people of color. Los Angeles had back-to-back black police chiefs, and as with New York City, the majority of L.A.'s street cops are people of color or women.

And it is not true, as some protestors claim, that "it doesn't happen the other way around." In Mobile, Alabama, in 2012, a black police officer shot and killed a white teenager. The white teen, high on drugs, was completely nude, and still the officer -- fearing for his life -- shot and killed the suspect. An investigation cleared the cop and -- despite public pressure -- a grand jury refused to indict him. No cameras. No CNN.

Just two days after Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot and killed Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, a "not white" cop in Salt Lake City, Utah, shot and killed an unarmed 20-year-old man whose race has been described as Hispanic. The family of the dead man believes that the cop is a murderer. No cameras. No CNN.

So, why riot in Baltimore? The answer is that for some people facts and reason don't matter. It's about anger, excitement, disruption. Some call it a "subculture." Others say these are "at-risk youth." Still others call it the "underclass." But the 800-pound elephant in the room is the absence of fathers -- responsible, involved fathers. Obama has said that a child growing up without a father is 20 times more likely to end up in jail. Today over 70 percent of black children are born to unwed mothers compared to 25 percent in the 1965.

To earn their near-monolithic 95-percent black vote, the Democratic Party repeatedly tells blacks of their continued oppression. During the 2012 election, Democratic National Committee chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, accused Republicans of seeking to "literally drag us all the way back to Jim Crow laws."

So, when a questionable white cop/black suspect takes place, some people, conditioned to react with anger and distrust, lash out. -- it's "us against them" and "they are trying to oppress us."

Come election time, Democrats fan and exploit this anger. Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y., for example, made this accusation in his last race: "Everything we believe in, everything we believe in (Republicans) hate. They don't disagree -- they hate. ... Some of them believe that slavery isn't over and that they won the Civil War." This is how Democrats get 95 percent of blacks to vote one way -? by telling them the other side is evil, that "the system" is corrupt and racist. So when a Freddy Gray, in police custody, turns up dead under suspicious circumstances, some will take to the streets to vent that "slavery isn't over."

Yes, Martin Luther King Jr. said, "A riot is the language of the unheard." When he said that, none of America's major cities had a black mayor. The country did not have back-to-back black attorneys general. The country did not have a black president elected -- and reelected.? Baltimore's riot is the tragic language of modern welfare state.

Prisoner In Van Said Freddie Gray Was 'Trying To Injure Himself' Document Says

By Peter Herman, Apr. 29, 2015, Washington Post

BALTIMORE — A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray “banging against the walls” of the vehicle and believed that he “was intentionally trying to injure himself,” according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post.

The prisoner, who is currently in jail, was separated from Gray by a metal partition and could not see him. His statement is contained in an application for a search warrant, which is sealed by the court. The Post was given the document under the condition that the prisoner not be named because the person who provided it feared for the inmate’s safety.

The document, written by a Baltimore police investigator, offers the first glimpse of what might have happened inside the van. It is not clear whether any additional evidence backs up the prisoner’s version, which is just one piece of a much larger probe.

U.S.-Flagged Ship Intercepted By Iranian Patrol

By Barbara Starr, Jim Sciutto and Jamie Crawford, Apr. 29, 2015, CNN

Washington (CNN)A U.S.-flagged ship was recently intercepted by an Iran Revolutionary Guard naval patrol, the U.S. Navy revealed to CNN Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Friday when four Iranian naval vessels surrounded the U.S.-flagged Maersk Kensington in the Strait of Hormuz.

The episode came ahead of an encounter Tuesday in which Iran Revolutionary Guard patrol boats fired shots at a commercial cargo ship and then intercepted the vessel, the Marshall Islands-flagged M/V Maersk Tigris, which was also crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

A senior U.S. military official told CNN that "the Iranians encircled the Kensington and followed the ship on its course for a period of time before withdrawing and breaking away." After that, the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet issued a notice to mariners about the incident.

The crew of the Maersk Tigris container ship is "safe and under the circumstances in good spirits," Danish shipping company Maersk said Wednesday in an emailed statement to CNN. The Pentagon estimates that about 30 individuals are on board.

Lerner was the IRS official at the center of allegations that the agency targeted tea party groups applying for nonprofit status. Congress requested Lerner's emails from the IRS and agency officials told lawmakers an unknown number of emails had been lost when Lerner's computer crashed.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration is in the process of turning the emails over to the Senate Finance Committee, which is investigating whether the IRS wrongly targeted conservative and other groups seeking tax-exempt status, committee spokesman Aaron Fobes said.

"These emails will be carefully examined as part of the committee's bipartisan IRS investigation," he said.

Defending Hillary Clinton Is Getting Hard

Getty
By Jennifer Rubin, Apr. 28, 2015, Business Insider

The reaction of the mainstream media to the Clinton scandals is telling.

News reporters and independent-minded analysts by and large seem to understand the gravity of the claims concerning foreign monies and concede that there is no "quid pro quo" or "smoking gun" required.

Peter Baker of the New York Times is among those who have not been thrown off the scent of scandal.

He told CBS's "Face the Nation" that "this is a big issue for Hillary Clinton because, in fact, it goes back to some of the issues we've been seeing with the Clintons going to the '90s, which is the interaction between money and politics, money and the Clintons in particular."

Likewise, Mark Halperin argued on ABC's "This Week": "The Clinton Foundation does great work. Some of the charges against her are overstated. That's on one side of the ledger. On the other side of the ledger, it's extraordinarily serious.
