State Department Emails Are Being Handled By Same Attorney Who Worked On Lois Lerner’s [VIDEO]

By Chuck Ross, Jun. 30, 2015, Daily Caller

The IRS attorney who worked to turn over Lois Lerner’s emails to congressional investigators now has a new gig, this time at a federal agency steeped in its own email controversy.

Catherine Duval now works at the State Department where she is in charge of that agency’s email productions, House Oversight member Trey Gowdy revealed during a hearing last Thursday. Prior to that, Duval worked as chief legal adviser to IRS commissioner John Koskinen.

IRS Confirms Illegals Can Get Back-Taxes Under Obama Amnesty

By Stephen Dinan, June 3, 2015, The Washington Times

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen has confirmed to Congress that illegal immigrants granted amnesty under President Obama’s new programs could claim back refunds even when they never filed returns to pay their taxes in the first place.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, who had pressed Mr. Koskinen over the issue, released written responses Wednesday in which the commissioner admitted he’d botched the question earlier and, in fact, illegal immigrants granted the amnesty will now be able to claim refunds on tax returns they never even filed, thanks to the Earned Income Tax Credit.

“To clarify my earlier comments on EITC, not only can an individual amend a prior year return to claim EITC, but an individual who did not file a prior year return may file a return and claim EITC (subject to refund limitations under section 6511 of the Internal Revenue Code),” Mr. Koskinen said.

He insisted, however, that he doubts many illegal immigrants will take advantage of the loophole because they would have to be able to prove their earnings for those years they never filed returns.

Loretta Lynch Has A Lois Lerner Decision To Make

Attorney General Loretta Lynch
By Pete Kasperowicz, May 28, 2015 Washington Examiner

Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee have asked Attorney General Loretta Lynch for an update on whether she will pursue criminal charges against former IRS employee Lois Lerner for her role in the IRS targeting scandal.

The committee last year identified three possible criminal charges that could be brought against Lerner, and asked the Department of Justice to consider bringing those charges. At the time, the attorney general was Eric Holder, and the committee chairman was Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich.

The committee also said Lerner provided misleading statements to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration when it was investigating the scandal, and that Lerner may have exposed confidential taxpayer information in the course of her tenure at the IRS.

IRS Says Identity Thieves Accessed Tax Transcripts For More Than 100000 Taxpayers

By Kelly Phillips Erb, May 26, 2015, Forbes.com

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced today that identity thieves have illegally accessed tax information for more than 100,000 taxpayers with unsuccessful attempts made on approximately 100,000 additional taxpayer accounts. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen delivered the news at a hastily arranged press conference this afternoon. The urgency, he indicated, was to alert taxpayers to the breach.

The unauthorized access to records occurred using the “Get Transcript” application, previously available on the IRS website. As a result, the transcript application was taken down late last week and will remain down until the problem is resolved. Currently, themessage on the IRS website reads:

The online Get Transcript service is currently unavailable. Transcripts may still be ordered using the Get Transcript by Mail service. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Taxpayer's Call To IRS Accidentally Broadcast On Howards Stern's Radio Show

By Jim Smith, May 19, 2015, CBS Baltimore

BOSTON (CBS) – A Cape Cod woman says the IRS is to blame after her personal information was broadcast on the Howard Stern show. “No one should go through something like this,” she says.

The woman, who did not want her face shown or name used, says it all began when she called the IRS to iron out a tax issue.

“I started to receive phone calls and text messages from all over the country informing me that the information I was discussing with the IRS agent was being aired on the Howard Stern show.”

A portion of what she thought was a private call was in fact being transmitted via satellite to millions of listeners, including her personal phone number.

“As soon as I heard of this information I just started to quiver, and had what I would call an out of body experience,” she says. “I couldn’t believe it at first I thought it was a joke.”

The IRS agent was apparently on another line with the Stern show at the same time, but didn’t seem to realize he was on the air.

Marsha Blackburn Circulating Letter Calling On Irs To Investigate Clinton Foundation Tax Status

By Matthew Boyle, May 13, 2015, Breitbart.com

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) 72% is working on building congressional support for pressure on the IRS to investigate the tax exempt status of the Clinton Foundation, Breitbart News has learned.

A draft copy of a letter from Blackburn—that she’s circulating around Capitol Hill for signatures from her colleagues—to IRS commissioner John Koskinen asks him to review the tax-exempt status of the foundation. Blackburn and her colleagues will write that “recent media reports have revealed that the Foundation failed to report millions of dollars in grants from foreign governments that it accepted while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State and that it facilitated private business transactions between foreign entities” and as such, “given the substantial public interest involved, we feel a prompt review of the Foundation’s tax-exempt status is appropriate to determine whether it is acting within the scope of its charitable mission.”

Technically, Blackburn’s letter notes, the Clinton Foundation is required to file an IRS 990 every year listing foreign contributions. But, she writes, Clinton’s Foundation “failed to report tens of millions of dollars in foreign government grants between 2010 and 2012.” Citing how Clinton’s Foundation officials and Bill Clinton himself admitted they didn’t handle the IRS filings correctly, Blackburn’s letter to the IRS commissioner argues that the Clinton Foundation’s “failure to report the donations is problematic and deserves enhanced scrutiny given Mrs. Clinton’s position as Secretary of State at the time.”

IRS Wasted $5.6B On Bogus Obama Stimulus Tax Credits, Audit Finds

By Stephen Dinan, May 5, 2015, The Washington Times

The IRS doled out more than $5 billion in potentially bogus college aid payments in 2012 under an Obama stimulus tax credit, according to a report Tuesday from the agency’s inspector general that said the administration still doesn’t have a good handle on how to root out erroneous claims.

Nearly 4 million students had questionable claims, totaling more than $5.6 billion in that one year alone, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said. At least half of the students never provided tuition statements showing what they paid, while others attended schools that didn’t qualify them for the tax credit.

Other students claimed the credit for more than four years, which should have automatically earned a rejection, the investigators said.

“The IRS still does not have effective processes to identify erroneous claims for education credits,” said Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration J. Russell George, who said he has warned the IRS repeatedly about the problem, but “many of the deficiencies TIGTA previously identified still exist.”

IRS officials insisted they have taken some steps and said the inspector general was overestimating the total lost to bogus payments — but the officials did acknowledge more needs to be done.

IRS Gave Promotions To Tax Cheaters: Audit

By Stephen Dinan,  May 6, 2015, The Washington Times

The IRS refused to fire most of its own employees found to be cheating on their taxes — and in some cases even quickly turned around and promoted them within the year, according to an audit released Wednesday.

In about 60 percent of cases of “willful violations,” IRS managers found mitigating circumstances and refused to fire the employees, even though the law calls for that penalty. In some of those cases, the managers didn’t even document why they had overridden the penalty, said Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration J. Russell George.

“Given its critical role in federal tax administration, the IRS must ensure that its employees comply with the tax law in order to maintain the public’s confidence,” Mr. George said. “Willful violation of the law by IRS employees should not be taken lightly, and the IRS commissioner should fully document decisions made to retain employees whom management has proposed be terminated.”

CNN: IRS Watchdog Finds 6400 Missing Lois Lerner Email

By Chris Frates, Apr. 28, 2015, CNN

Washington (CNN)The IRS watchdog investigating the disappearance of Lois Lerner's emailstold a Senate committee it has found roughly 6,400 messages that have never before been turned over to Congress.

Lerner was the IRS official at the center of allegations that the agency targeted tea party groups applying for nonprofit status. Congress requested Lerner's emails from the IRS and agency officials told lawmakers an unknown number of emails had been lost when Lerner's computer crashed.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration is in the process of turning the emails over to the Senate Finance Committee, which is investigating whether the IRS wrongly targeted conservative and other groups seeking tax-exempt status, committee spokesman Aaron Fobes said.

"These emails will be carefully examined as part of the committee's bipartisan IRS investigation," he said.

IRS Files $70K Tax Lien Against MSNBC's Harris-Perry, Husband

By Michael Hewlett, Apr 15, 2015,
Winston-Salem Journal

The Internal Revenue Service has placed a tax lien on Melissa Harris-Perry and her husband, James Perry, for about $70,000 in delinquent taxes, according to a notice filed in Forsyth County Hall of Justice earlier this month.

Harris-Perry is a well-known host of an MSNBC talk show and a professor at Wake Forest University. The IRS filed the notice April 6.

In an email Wednesday, Harris-Perry said she was unaware of the tax lien but knew about the debt. She said she and her husband paid $21,721 of the debt when they filed their taxes Wednesday. The remaining debt, $48,581, covers a tax period ending Dec. 31, 2013, according to the notice.

IRS Delaying Refunds For Thousands Of Obamacare Enrollees

By Thami Luhby, Mar. 5, 2015, CNN Money

The hold up, she says, is subsidy data from state health exchanges.

What's more, Olson said the IRS told its telephone representatives not to tell callers the reason for the delay.

Obamacare enrollees received subsidies based on their estimated income for 2014. Now that they know their actual income, the IRS has to make sure the initial subsidy amount was correct.

Some enrollees will have to pay back part of their subsidies or receive smaller refunds if they underestimated their incomes. Others may get larger refunds if they earned less than they anticipated.

The IRS needs to get the 1095-A forms, which includes the subsidy data, from the state exchanges to confirm the information taxpayers put on their return is correct.

Olson's comments are the latest headache for Obamacare enrollees and the Obama administration. Last month, administration officials said that 800,000 enrollees received incorrect 1095-A forms.

94-Year-Old Vet Can't File Tax Return Because IRS Says He's Dead

FoxNews.com, Jan. 25, 2015

“It isn’t really a problem in my daily life,” Meinstein told the Columbus Dispatch Friday. “Everybody accepts my money.”

The IRS rejected the return and the reason given was because the filer was dead according to the Social Security Administration.

A few days later, Meinstein and his son went to the Social Security office in Columbus and were told that their records did not list the elder Meinstein as deceased. The office gave the Meinsteins a letter to send to the IRS. They did only to have the IRS kick it back to Social Security.

"Please don't ask them about closures, pipelines, wait time for full development cases, or the c4 application letter ... can we put this off please?" Lerner said in an April 4, 2012 email shortly after Grant informed her about a planned visit to the office, according to Townhall.com.

IRS Keeps Albuquerque Tea Party In Limbo 5 Years After Tax-exempt Status Application

Stephen Dinan, Jan. 12, 2015, Washington Times

“If the IRS, with its massive staff, read only 1/2 of a page daily of all the paperwork we have had to send them, they could have read it all three years ago,” Rick Harbaugh, secretary of the board of the Albuquerque group, said in an email describing his group’s five-year battle with the tax agency.

Worse yet, he said, they still don’t know why they were targeted in the first place, and every explanation from the IRS — that the targeting was by low-level employees in Ohio, for example — has been wrong.

Docs: Ahead Of 2012 Presidential Election Lois Lerner Begged Supervisor Not to Visit IRS Office

Katie Pavlich, Jan. 14, 2015, Townhall

“These new documents, withheld for years contrary to law, suggest that a top IRS official may have obstructed investigations into the IRS scandal. Even Lois Lerner objected to her boss’s travel to the infamous Cincinnati IRS office, falsely accused by Barack Obama as being solely responsible for the abuse of the First Amendment rights of his critics,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a statement. “These documents also show the IRS knew early on that it was abusing its authority and innocent Americans through burdensome information requests and improper collection of the names of donors to groups that threatened Obama’s reelection. This IRS scandal is just getting started. Obama’s cover up of his administration’s suppression of his political opposition continues to unravel.”

Need Help Filing Out Your Tax Return? Don't Call The IRS

Stephen Ohlemacher, Jan. 14, 2015, AP

Got a question for the IRS? Good luck reaching someone by phone. The tax agency says only half of the 100 million people expected to call this year will be able to reach a person.

Callers who do get through may have to wait on hold for 30 minutes or more to talk to someone who will answer only the simplest questions.

BOMBSHELL MEMO: Jeanne Shaheen Conspired With WH Insider On IRS Targeting Scandal

Patrick Howley, Nov. 3, 2014, Daily Caller

Democratic New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen was principally involved in a plot with Lois Lerner and President Barack Obama’s political appointee at the IRS to lead a program of harassment against conservative nonprofit groups during the 2012 election, according to letters exclusively obtained by The Daily Caller.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) did not want to publicly release 2012 correspondences exchanged between the IRS and Jeanne Shaheen at her personal Washington office: the agency delayed releasing the information to a major conservative super PAC multiple times, even threatening to see the super PAC in court, according to emails.
