Rachel Dolezal, the former Washington state NAACP president thrust into the spotlight after media revealed she was a white woman posing as black, is facing welfare fraud charges.

 Dolezal, who legally changed her name to Nkechi Diallo in 2016, could face up to 15 years in prison after authorities say she received thousands of dollars in public assistance. She’s accused of welfare fraud, perjury and false verification for public assistance, TV station KHQ reports.

Texas Woman Discovers She's White After 70 Years

 CONVERSE, Texas — A well-kept family secret about racial identity has given a Texas woman a unique perspective on the uproar surrounding Rachel Dolezal.

The mere mention of Dolezal's name sets Verda Byrd off like a stick of dynamite.

"She lied about her race," Byrd said. "I didn't lie because I didn't know."

Dolezal's publicized choice to identify herself as black has been under scrutiny. The former NAACP president in Spokane, Wash., is accused of deceiving the public by insisting she was not only of black descent but black herself.

Byrd considers herself African American.

"I'm comfortable with being a black woman," she said.

Her preference in race comes through an incredible set of circumstances. Byrd was born to Earl and Daisy Beagle in September 1942. Her biological parents, whom she describes as white transients, named her Jeanette.

Her father walked out on his family leaving her mother with 10 children to care for. After Daisy Beagle fell 30 feet to the ground in a trolley accident, the state of Missouri took her children away from her because she could not care for them.

Untangling Rachel's Web Of Lies

For me, Rachel Dolezal's race was never the issue. It was her credibility.

And that was a big issue for me because for several years, I was the reporter assigned to cover her activities in Coeur d'Alene. I wrote many stories about her work at the Human Rights Education Institute, and several about the hate crimes she reported.

Even before she called to tell me in September 2009 that someone had left a noose on the doorstep of her Spokane home, I saw troubling signs that Rachel might not be telling the truth about her background.

I was surprised when she told another Press reporter in February 2009 that she was the product of a biracial marriage and had been discriminated against as a child growing up in Troy, Mont. By that time, I had written five stories about Rachel and her human rights work and this was new information. I did a little research at the time, and could not find evidence contradicting what Rachel had said about herself.

Her race did not become relevant to my reporting until I interviewed her about the first noose.

Variety Blasts NBC for Going ‘Way Too Easy’ On Rachel Dolezal

In a Tuesday article, Variety’s co-editor-in-chief Andrew Wallenstein slammed NBC for its series of exclusive interviews with ex-NAACP leader Rachel Dolezal: “...the most absurd aspect of NBC News’ Dolezal Day was how straight-faced its interviewers sat as their subject grew loonier the more she spoke.” Dolezal sat down for a live interview with co-host Matt Lauer on Tuesday’s Today, a taped interview with MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry, and another taped interview with Today co-host Savannah Guthrie that was aired on NBC Nightly News that evening.

Wallenstein observed:

Lauer and Harris-Perry somehow didn’t ask a single question that really challenged Dolezal, who was given free rein to self-mythologize a story that even the most sympathetic observer would have to concede is just begging for some tough questions. Instead, it was as if the sheer peculiarity of an eloquent woman professing to be black despite being born white had knocked them so off-balance that they might have been better off just standing there slack-jawed.

Rachel Dolezal once accused her ex-husband of forcing her to take part in a homemade sex tape, Daily Mail Online can reveal.

Dolezal, 37, admitted participating in 'sexual acts' on camera with Kevin Moore, who has been pictured in public for the first time since their wedding photo appeared.

However, Dolezal - a serial litigant who resigned her post as leader of the Spokane, Washington chapter of the NAACP Monday - insisted she took part in the video against her will.

The lurid claim was one of a raft of damaging accusations she leveled at Moore, 37, in a bid to deny him access to their young son Franklin. Moore denied the allegations.

Montana-born Dolezal married the African American physical therapist in March 2000 but their marriage ended five years later in a bitter court battle.

Race faker Rachel demanded a divorce, claiming in court documents seen by DailyMail.com that she suffered 'years' of 'physical, emotional, sexual and verbal abuse' at his hands. Moore has denied her claims.

Rachel Dolezal's confirmation Tuesday that she doesn't see herself as a white person, despite the now-undisputable fact that she was born to white parents, has touched off a wide-ranging series of reactions from the public, who have undoubtedly found this latest episode of the country's continuing dialogue about race intriguing, to say the least. But perhaps the loudest responses to what appears to be a white woman having masqueraded as a black woman for the better part of a decade is coming from black people themselves, with reactions ranging from anger to confusion to support, and everything in between.

"I identify as black," Dolezal confidently told Matt Lauer Tuesday morning during an interview on NBC's "Today" show, echoing her previous claims that were widely reported after she was outed last week as a white woman who was leading her local NAACP chapter in Spokane, Washington.

Dolezal, 37, has highlighted her career in art and academics by becoming an activist for black people and related causes, and she was elected as NAACP president in Spokane. But for some prominent black voices in America, her role within the organization -- regardless of her triumphs -- was either admirable or duplicitous, depending on who you ask.

Rachel Dolezal Breaks Her Silence On TODAY: 'I Identify As Black'

Rachel Dolezal, the former NAACP chapter president accused of pretending to be black, tells TODAY's Matt Lauer in an exclusive live interview that she identifies as black — something she started doing at the age of five.

"I was drawing self-portraits with the brown crayon instead of the peach crayon, and black curly hair," she told Lauer. But she insisted she never deceived anyone as numerous critics have suggested.

"I do take exception to that because it's a little more complex than me identifying as black or answering a question of, are you black or white?" she said.

Rachel Dolezal Sued Howard University For Racial Discrimination

A new report from the Smoking Gun claims Rachel Dolezal—the Spokane woman who has lied for years about being African American— sued Howard University in 2002. According to court documents obtained by the site, Dolezal, who went by Rachel Moore at the time, sued the historically black college by alleging discrimination "based on race, pregnancy, family responsibilities and gender." From the report:

She alleged that Smith and other school officials improperly blocked her appointment to a teaching assistant post, rejected her application for a post-graduate instructorship, and denied her scholarship aid while she was a student.

The court opinion also noted that Dolezal claimed that the university’s decision to remove some of her artworks from a February 2001 student exhibition was "motivated by a discriminatory purpose to favor African-American students over" her.

NAACP Leader Dolezal Cancels Chapter Meeting

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Amid unanswered questions about her ethnic identity and continued leadership, local NAACP acting president Rachel Dolezal on Sundaycanceled a Monday meeting of the chapter.

"Due to the need to continue discussion with regional and national NAACP leaders, tomorrow's meeting is postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date," Dolezal said in an announcement emailed to media on Sunday.

Dolezal, who is also chairwoman of a police oversight committee, said Friday that she and her executive board would be making a statement at the Monday meeting about claims she misled people about her race.

The announcement was also e-mailed to NAACP members. In the email chain Sunday, Executive Committee Chair Lawrence Burnley wrote:

"I'm puzzled by your decision to arbitrarily cancel/postpone the meeting without input from the executive committee which is scheduled to meet today. The Association's by-laws provides specific guidelines concerning monthly general/branch meetings.

White NAACP Leader Gave Black Is Beautiful Lecture About History Of Black Hair In Which She Talked About Her Own Tight Curls

In a lecture posted just this past February, white NAACP leader talks about the history of black hair and her own personal experiences.

Rachel Dolezal gave the presentation at Eastern Washington University, where she teaches, and talks about, among other things; a timeline of black hair, 'nappiness,' and the brown paper bag test in which only blacks with light skin were welcomed into events or offered jobs.

The name of the lecture was Black Is Beautiful.

Dolezal opened her lecture by reading the poem Among the Things That Used to Be by Willi Coleman.

Coleman, a professor at University of Vermont, wrote the poem about black hair, ending the piece by saying; 'Beauty shops could have been a hell-of-a-place to ferment a revolution.'
