Obama's Penchant For Desert Golf Faces Scrutiny In Drought

By Jesse Marx, Jun. 20, 2015, USA Today

PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. —One question for President Obama as he heads for Palm Springs, Calif. this weekend: whether it's appropriate to play on plush green golf links in the desert amid a severe drought.

"This administration's commitment to helping those affected by the drought is second to none," said White House deputy press secretary Eric Schultz Thursday in answer to a reporter's question on that topic before the president headed to the West Coast.

"I know that many courses have taken water mitigation steps aimed at water conservation," Schultz said.

That's true. Golf course managers convened a task force in 2013 to focus on reducing the water footprint of their properties. Since then, more owners have replaced some acres of grass with desert landscaping, and it's possible that more still will follow to cut back on watering during the drought.

PGA President's Ouster Shows Quick Reaction To Sexist Comments

Rob Gloster, Oct. 27, 2014, Bloomberg News

Ousted PGA of America President Ted Bishop became the latest sports executive punished for making insensitive comments, reflecting a growing effort by sports bodies to react decisively on sexist or racist comments.

Bishop's removal came one day after he referred to England's Ian Poulter as a "little school girl squealing during recess," and a week after a Russian tennis official was suspended for mocking Serena and Venus Williams as the "Williams brothers."

By CNN Wire, Sept, 14, 2014, Kdvr.com / Fox 31 Denver

MIAMI — Greg Norman says he is lucky to still have his left hand after a chainsaw accident.

The famed Australian golfer, who won two majors and 20 U.S. PGA Tour titles, posted a photo late Saturday on his Instagram account showing him lying in a hospital bed.

“Working with a chainsaw ALWAYS be respectful of the unexpected,” he wrote in the caption. “I was one lucky man today. Damaged, but not down & out. Still have left hand.”

Later he posted another photo with his left forearm in a foam device that helps keep the arm in place.

“Thank u all for your concern & good wishes. All well the morning after the accident. Here I am at the scene of the crime … w/my new fashion statement!” wrote Norman, who lives in Jupiter Island, Florida.

His daughter said he is recovering “nicely.”

“He will have a hundred percent recovery in a few weeks,” Morgan-leigh Norman said.

Her father had minor surgery to repair slight nerve damage, she said. The accident happened at his Florida home, she said. He went to surgery Saturday afternoon and was home that night.

ABC: Semi-Retired President 'Entirely Unconcerned' By Optics Of Playing Golf While Iraq Melts Down

By Allahpundit, Aug. 11, 2014, Hotair.com

On the one hand, by his own admission, what’s happening in northern Iraq is genocidal in intent. On the other hand, Farm Neck sure is a sweet course.

Dilemmas, dilemmas.

He did authorize military action before hitting the links, but then so did Bush and that didn’t spare him from lefty mockery for years afterward — and Bush quit the game in 2003 because he felt it sent “the wrong signal” when bombs were falling. But maybe that explains it. Maybe it’s okay for O to play because this is still “Bush’s war.” Or is it?

In a post over the weekend, Joel Gehrke covered President Obama’s astonishing claim that it was not his decision to pull American troops out of Iraq, notwithstanding that he was commander-in-chief when they were withdrawn. John McCormack (with an assist from Max Boot) had an excellent post rehearsing the relevant history, which boils down to a familiar pattern: President Bush’s fingerprints are on the decision, and on any matter in which there is some contributory Bush role, Obama blames Bush, no matter how minimal Bush’s contribution was, as if Obama were a mere spectator incapable of anything other than self-absorbed indignation…
But on the matter of Obama disclaiming responsibility for his own pull-out of American forces, it is worth recalling some more history. As a candidate in mid-2008, Obama pushed aggressively for a swift U.S. pullout and publicly undermined Bush – who was trying to keep troops there with no strict timetable for withdrawal – by colluding with the loathsome Maliki toward that end. With candidate Obama about to visit Iraq and already heavily favored to win the presidency, Maliki openly endorsed Obama’s call for a complete American pullout within 16 months of Obama’s taking office.
