On Saturday at his closely-watched “B-sides” concert — which ran exclusively on the hip-hop mogul’s music streaming service Tidal — Jay Z responded to critics with a sharply-worded freestyle rap. During one verse, he connected Tidal’s troubles with the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown and Freddie Gray — unarmed African-American men whose tragic deaths made international headlines.

“You know when I work, I ain’t your slave, right? You know I ain’t shucking and jiving and high-fiving, and you know this ain’t back in the days, right? Well I can’t tell how the way they killed Freddie Gray, right? Shot down Mike Brown how they did Tray, right?” the rap legend said.

Baltimore: The Intersection of the Grievance Culture and the Welfare State By Larry Elder

After the mysterious death of suspect Freddie Gray, the Maryland state's attorney for Baltimore charged all six Baltimore police officers involved with his arrest and transport. The crimes ranging from "second-degree depraved-heart murder" to involuntary manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. Locals cheered her decision to charge all six. The charges followed three days of riots triggered by Gray's funeral and came almost immediately after the medical examiner filed his report calling Gray's death a "homicide."

Now for the hard part.

Not only will the charges be difficult to prove but three of those charged are black. The claim of illegal "racial profiling" argues that white racist officers possess an unwarranted fear of young black men. But what happens to that analysis when the accused officers are black? If black cops are just as likely to engage in race-based misconduct, why did Ferguson demonstrators demand a "diverse" police force?

If the Ferguson outrage and riots were about "lack of representation" or "lack of voice," this cannot be said about Baltimore. The city council is majority black, the police department is approximately 40 percent black, the top two officials running the department are black men, the city has a black mayor, the state's attorney for Baltimore City -- who charged the six officers -- is black, the new U.S. attorney general is a black female, and of course the President of the United States is black.

The left has created a culture of anger and entitlement based upon government dependency and the false assertion that racism remains a major problem. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., for example, said that the recent police killings mean "open season on black men in America." The Baltimore mayor's shameful embrace of the Rev. Al Sharpton, the race-hustling incendiary who demanded an arrest of Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, did not help matters. Some actually believe this tripe about "institutional racism." Of those, how many rioted over Freddie Gray's "murder," no matter the race of the mayor?

Police shootings over the last several decades are down. Cop shootings of blacks are down more than 75 percent over the last 45 years, while the death-by-cop rate for whites has increased slightly. According to the CDC -- which tracks all causes of death, including shootings by law enforcement -- over twice as many whites are killed by police as are blacks.

Police "profile" because out of a relatively small percentage of the population come more than 50 percent of homicides and 40 percent of the people behind bars. Blacks are 13 percent of the population, but young blacks -- the category that disproportionately commits crime -- are 3 percent of the population.

Speaking of "root causes," Baltimore has not had a Republican mayor since 1967. So why haven't the Democrats addressed the "root causes"? In 1992, then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton blamed the "Rodney King riots" in Los Angeles on "12 years of denial and neglect" under the Reagan/Bush presidencies. Can we similarly attribute Baltimore's riots to six years of Obama's "progressive" policies?

Baltimore, Democrats say, needs a "new Marshall plan." But, according to the Heritage Foundation, we have spent over $22 trillion on anti-poverty programs. On education in Baltimore, in 2012 (the latest year available), they spent $15,287 per student. Yet almost half of urban Baltimoreans fail to graduate high school, and of those who do, many cannot read write and compute at grade level. Spend more?

In 1965, 25 percent of black kids were born out of wedlock. Today that number is up to 72 percent. Obama said that a kid without a father is 20 times more likely to go to jail. Blame the welfare state that incentivizes women into marrying the government.

Last year 189 blacks were killed in Baltimore. Where were CNN and President Barack Obama and then-Attorney General Eric Holder and Sharpton? Chicago averages 35 to 40 murders per month, the majority by and against blacks -- and most remain unsolved. Where are CNN/Obama/Holder/Sharpton?

Obama has now misfired in at least four "racial" matters: the Cambridge police/Harvard professor incident; Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman; Michael Brown/Darren Wilson; and now Baltimore.

Obama's claimed the "Cambridge police acted stupidly" in arresting black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., who falsely and belligerently accused a white officer of racial profiling.

In the case of Trayvon Martin, Obama said, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon." But the jury found Zimmerman not only not guilty, but jurors later said that during their deliberations race never came up.

In the case of Ferguson, the Department of Justice found that Michael Brown very likely did not have his hands up and that the cop acted appropriately when he killed Brown, a charging suspect who posed a risk of death or serious injury.

Who would've thought that after the election and reelection of the nation's first black president, we'd see race riots in our nation's cities? Baltimore is what happens at the intersection of the grievance culture and the welfare state.

ALLEN: “Trayvon Martin’s mother says George Zimmerman got away with murder. You’re writing a letter to Trayvon’s mother, his parents, what will it say?”

HOLDER: “Well, I’m going to try to — it’s yeah — I’m going to pen a letter to them. I’ve worked on it already, and I think I’d like to kind of keep that personal. But one of the things it’s certainly going to talk about is my admiration for the way in which they have conducted themselves. The loss of a child is not something that we are biologically engineered to handle, and the dignity with which they have carried themselves, the determination that has been generated in them to make something positive out of the tragedy that they have had to endure has created in me a great deal of admiration for them.”

ALLEN: “Now, the Ferguson inquiry will be resolved before you leave?”

HOLDER: “Yes.”

ALLEN: “And it looks like no federal charges in Ferguson or Trayvon. I’m a young African-American. What do I think?”

HOLDER: “Well, I would say, first, I would note I have not announced anything with regard to — to Ferguson. “

ALLEN: “Yeah, it looks like it, yeah.”

HOLDER: “But what I said to the people of Ferguson is what I think people ought to understand, is that we have done independent, thorough investigations in all of the matters that we have examined, and we have brought record numbers of cases against police departments around this country. I don’t think anybody would be able to look at this Justice Department over the last six years and say that we’ve been anything other than aggressive in trying to root out inappropriate police conduct while, at the same time, trying to establish, or re-establish bonds of trust between communities of color and people in law enforcement.”

ALLEN: “Mr. Attorney General, are the standards of the civil rights laws too high for you to make cases in instances like this?”

HOLDER: “I mean that’s certainly something that I’m going to want to talk about before I leave. I think some serious consideration needs to be given to the standard of proof that has to be met before federal involvement is appropriate, and that’s something that I am going to be talking about before — before I leave office.”

ALLEN: And in what sense have you come to realize that the standards in the civil rights laws are too high?

HOLDER: “Well, I think that if we adjust those standards, we can make the federal government a better backstop, make us more a part of the process in an appropriate way to reassure the American people that decisions are made by people who are really disinterested, and I think that if we make those adjustments, we will have that capacity.”

ALLEN: “And what is the biggest adjustment you’d like to see?”

HOLDER: “Well, I’m not going to go into it right now, but I’m going to talk about that before I leave.”

'Racial' Cop Stories That Didn't Make The Cut By Larry Elder

In 2012, according to the CDC, 140 blacks were killed by police. That same year 386 whites were killed by police. Over the 13-year period from 1999 to 2011, the CDC reports that 2,151 whites were killed by cops -- and 1,130 blacks were killed by cops.

Police shootings, nationwide, are down dramatically from what they were 20 or 30 years ago. The CDC reported that in 1968, shootings by law enforcement -- called "legal intervention" by the CDC -- was the cause of death for 8.6 out of every million blacks. For whites the rate was was .9 deaths per million.

By 2011, law enforcement shootings caused 2.74 deaths for every million blacks, and 1.28 deaths for every million whites. While the death-by-cop rate for whites has held pretty steady over these last 45 years, hovering just above or below the one-in-a-million level, the rate for blacks has fallen. In 1981, black deaths by cop stood at four in a million, but since 2000 has remained just above or below two in a million.

So what's driving this notion that there is now an "epidemic" of white cops shooting blacks when in the last several decades the numbers of blacks killed by cops are down nearly 75 percent?

Where's the evidence suggesting race had anything to do with the death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, who was pointing a pellet gun at bystanders before being shot and killed by police?

What's the racial nexus to the death of Eric Garner, the large, obese man who died after being taken down by several NYPD cops?

While the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case became another racial thermometer of America, the jury found Zimmerman not guilty, and several jurors later said that during jury deliberations "race never came up."

The Ferguson, Missouri, shooting of Michael Brown by officer Darren Wilson is yet another case where there is absolutely no evidence that whatever happened occurred because of Michael Brown's race. Did officer Wilson display racial animus? Does anyone know if this officer Wilson had some racist background? With the desire by media for a scalp, such information would have long ago been made public by somebody.

This white-cop-out-to-get-black-civilian narrative advances the interest of many. The media loves what Tom Wolfe called the "Great White Defendant" -- a bad white guy everybody can agree to dislike. For the Democrats, it furthers their assertion that race remains a major problem in America, that Republicans/tea partiers/black conservatives are out to get them, and you must vote for us. For "activists" like the Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and local wannabes, it gives them continued relevance.

That this "epidemic" is imaginary can be demonstrated by the recent stories that never became national news.

In Mobile, Alabama, a black cop shot and killed an unarmed white teenager. As with Michael Brown, the Alabama teen was later found to have been under the influence of marijuana at the time of the shooting. The teen had also recently taken a hallucinogen, and was so stoned he thought he was on fire ?- and literally took his clothes off. Nude -- and obviously unarmed -- he was still later shot by the cop. Despite public pressure, a Mobile grand jury decided not to indict the black police officer, believing he acted in self-defense. Not national news.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, just two days after Brown was shot and killed in Ferguson, a "not white" cop shot and killed an unarmed 20-year-old man whose race has been described as Hispanic. The family of the dead man believes that the cop is a murderer. Not national news.

In Pennsylvania, a state trooper named Kelly Cruz was accused in 2009 of stomping on the head of a handcuffed suspect laying on the ground, resulting in facial fractures, a broken nose and damaged teeth. The trooper, at the time, was attached to a local drug task force and was part of a raid on a suspected meth lab. One of the men inside escaped during the raid, and the victim -- who, according to another officer, was seen running from the scene and found five houses away -- was thought to be the meth lab escapee. Turns out the victim was not a meth lab escapee. The local grand jury decided not to indict the trooper. The feds, however, filed civil rights charges against the cop. He was found not guilty by the federal jury. Not national news.

It is rare for a cop to shoot and kill any civilian. Excluding practice on the gun range, 95 percent of officers never discharge their firearm while in the line of duty, including those who work for big-city departments. The first time -- and only time -- officer Darren Wilson used his firearm while on duty was in the Michael Brown case. The facts do not support the narrative that there is an epidemic of white cops shooting unarmed blacks.

We are being manipulated.

Crippling Children By Selling Them Racism By Larry Elder

The recent "rash" of police officers killing blacks is prompting "civil rights activists" to describe America -- despite the election and re-election of a black president -- as still a simmering caldron of racism. Never mind that according to the CDC, in 2012 (the most recent year with available data) 140 blacks were killed by cops -- versus 386 whites killed by cops.

This dreary movie scene comes from a film about inner-city black teens called "Menace II Society." A black high school teacher speaks to two former students: "Being a black man in America isn't easy. The hunt is on, and you're the prey! All I'm saying is ... all I'm saying is -- survive! Alright?" In case the identity of the alleged "hunter" is unclear, we hear a police siren in the background. Cops are out to get young black men.

Ridiculous.

But that gloomy narrative tracks closely with Attorney General Eric Holder's assertion that America suffers from "pernicious racism." And a few weeks after the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin shooting happened, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, "Blacks are under attack."
Absurd.

In 1997, CNN and Time conducted a poll that asked white and black teens about "racism." Question: Is racism a major problem in America? Both black and white teens said, "yes." But when black teens were asked if racism is a "big problem," a "small problem" or "no a problem at all" -- in their own lives -- 89 percent called racism a "small problem" or "not a problem at all" for themselves.

In fact, 17 years ago, not only did black teens see racism as an insignificant problem in their own lives, but nearly twice as many black teens than white teens called "failure to take advantage of available opportunities" a bigger problem than racism.

What damage do "activists" inflict by convincing young black men that cops -- or, for that matter, Republicans, tea party members and black conservatives -- are out to get them? This emotion-based paranoia has real-world consequences. Fear and paranoia hurt potential and careers.

In the '60s, University of Pennsylvania professor Martin Seligman developed the theory of "learned helplessness" -- when a person learns to believe and act helpless when, in fact, they do have control over their own negative circumstances but fail to exercise it. He then devoted most of his studies to "positive psychology" and the effect of happiness and optimism in people's lives. He produced an equation, H=S+C+V, where a person's genetic capacity for happiness (S), plus their circumstances (C) and factors under their voluntary control (V) equal their happiness (H).

His extensive research discovered that a low "C" -- adverse circumstances like poor health or poverty -- matters very little if a person has a high "V," a positive, optimistic outlook and a belief in himself. For example, he found that an upbeat wheelchair-bound factory worker often leads a happier life than a robust, wealthy CEO.

Psychologists called this the "emotional quotient" factor, or EQ: a measurement of a person's ability to monitor his or her emotions, cope with pressures and demands, control his or her thoughts and actions, and one's ability to assess and affect situations and relationships with other people. Salesmen, for example, with "high EQ" for a strong positive outlook outsold those with higher traditional aptitude, but with lower EQ. High EQ people engage in positive behavior, which leads to positive results.

George Foreman, the former heavyweight boxing champion, is one of the most successful pitchmen of our generation. A spokesperson for products ranging from Meineke mufflers and Doritos to his own low-fat indoor grill, which earned him $138 million when he sold the grill's naming rights in 1999, Foreman has an estimated net worth of $250 million. A high school dropout, Foreman recently wrote this about the value of optimism:

"This life, this country, is about HOPE.

"My first two jobs were about selling: Four hours of putting out sale papers, on doors, cars and handed out. Then at a fruit stand. Texas watermelon season was the best. Competition was great -- we had to (as boys) have a variety of melons and a lot of charm.

"The ability to sell is about the best asset one can pass on to a generation to come. And the most critical and influential product anyone can deal or trade is 'Hope.'

"No matter who we lose, every young doctor is optimistic we will win this one. And many a time we do. Not a whole lot is new, just the same old Hope. ... When things go wrong in this life our sole obligation to our children is to sell them on Hope. Sure, beating our head against the wall is an option. But time and life must proceed. Anger and disappointment bring more dark clouds. Oh, but HOPE is the sunshine that every child needs for play. ...

Teach them Hope. And BELIEVE there is Hope.

"It's our duty."

MSNBC' Wagner OK With Racial Tactics—If That's What It Takes To Win

Could this be the most cynical statement of the campaign season? The woman whose recent wedding President Obama attended is okay with stoking the racial fears of black Americans—if that's what it takes to drive them to the polls and secure Dem victories. Alex Wagner devoted a segment of her MSNBC show today to the naked appeals to the racial fears of black Americans that Democrats are making in campaign ads. Wagner discussed Dem ads that seek to stoke black fear toward Republicans by invoking Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. 
You might think Wagner would have condemned these ugly tactics, explicitly aimed at driving Americans apart based on their race. Think again. To the contrary, Wagner concluded the segment by saying that it shouldn't have to be the kind of threats contained in these ads that get people to vote, "but if it does, so much stronger the party is for it."

ICYMI: 3 White Girls Attacked By Black Mob

Why did the Trayvon Martin case become such a huge national story?

Is it because an innocent black teenager lost his life at the hands of a man, George Zimmerman, who "racially profiled" him? Is it that the victim is black and the shooter was not? Is it because the major media push the narrative that white anti-black racism remains an "unresolved" national issue? Is it because "civil rights activist" and MSNBC host Al Sharpton demands the shooter's arrest, threatening peaceful civil disobedience and "economic sanctions"?

If violent black-white crime generates headlines, where were the media after the sickening racially motivated assault that occurred in Long Beach, Calif., on Halloween night, 2006?

Three young white women were brutally kicked, punched and beaten by a mostly black mob of 30 to 40 teens and adults. According to witnesses, during the rampage the mob yelled: "We hate white people. F--- whites!" Yet only two local papers reported the story, and one -- the Los Angeles Times -- published its article a full week after the attack! National Public Radio got around to mentioning Long Beach a month later, but only to raise the question of whether blacks, given America's history of racism, can even commit a "hate crime."

The way The New York Times covered the 1991 Crown Heights, N.Y., riots shows how the major media downplay black violence. A Columbia University professor called the three days of anti-Semitic rioting "a modern-day pogrom."

The Crown Heights riots started after a 7-year-old black child was killed in a traffic accident when a car driven by a Hasidic Jew went out of control. The Rev. Sharpton led 400 protesters through the Jewish section of Crown Heights, with one protester holding a sign that read, "The White Man Is the Devil." During the ensuing nights of rock- and bottle-throwing, nearly 200 people suffered injuries. Surrounded by a mob yelling, "Kill the Jew!" a young Talmudic scholar, Yankel Rosenbaum, was stabbed to death.

Last year, on the 20th anniversary of the Crown Heights riots, Rosenbaum's brother wrote: "It was Sharpton who repeatedly bellowed to the rioters, 'No justice, no peace!' And Sharpton claims his remarks at Gavin Cato's funeral were misinterpreted. Here is what he said ... : 'Talk about how Oppenheimer in South Africa sends diamonds straight to Tel Aviv and deals with the diamond merchants right here in Crown Heights. The issue is not anti-Semitism; the issue is apartheid. ... All we want to say is what Jesus said: If you offend one of these little ones, you got to pay for it. No compromise, no meetings, no coffee klatch, no skinnin' and grinnin'.'"

But according to a New York Times reporter, Ari Goldman, the Times insisted on reporting a false narrative: (SET ITAL) that during the riots Jews were as likely to be the aggressor as were blacks. (END ITAL) Frustrated over the misleading reporting, Goldman said he called his Times editor to complain, "'You don't know what's happening here!' I yelled. 'I am on the streets getting attacked. Someone next to me just got hit. I am writing memos, and what comes out in the paper? 'Hasidim and blacks clashed'? That's not what is happening here. Jews are being attacked! You've got this story all wrong. All wrong.'"

The New York Times simply did not want to hear about the one-sided nature of the riots. Nor is accurately covering the extent of black-on-black crime apparently news that's fit to print.

Following Trayvon Martin's death, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, "Blacks are under attack" -- presumably by the George Zimmermans of the country. And Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., a black lawmaker and former member of the Black Panthers, stood up on the floor of the House. Against House rules, he donned a hoodie, presumably to demonstrate the unfairness of profiling a black man based on his clothing.

Rush later described himself as "an African-American father whose son has been killed on the streets." Rush implied that his son, like Trayvon Martin, was an innocent black victim of random street violence.

The details remain murky about the death of Rush's son. But Rush's son, Huey, was allegedly working as a drug-runner. Evidence suggests that Huey was targeted. One of the murder suspects said Huey had been paid $100,000 to procure drugs that he failed to deliver. And tragically, in 2002 another member of Rush's family, Dennis Rush, was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery during a narcotics transaction. The crime had nothing to do with randomness or profiling.

For many in the media, the Trayvon Martin case is a referendum on "race relations" in America. But the case is really a referendum on the media. The media are intensely interested in covering white-on-black violence, even when rushing to do so -- as in the Duke lacrosse "rape" case -- compromises the truth. But the media are far less interested in reporting about the No. 1 cause of death of young black men age 15 to 24: homicide by other black men.

SELMA, Ala. - An Alabama teacher was suspended without pay after being accused of having sixth-grade students re-enact the deadly police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the Trayvon Martin killing in Florida.

The Selma Times-Journal quoted Dallas County School Superintendent Don Willingham as saying the social studies teacher used poor judgment during a lesson on current events.

School officials haven't identified the teacher, who works at Brantley Elementary School.

Administrators were alerted to the Ferguson re-enactment this week after the mother of a student in the class posted a complaint on Facebook. The Missouri city has been a hotbed of protests since a police officer fatally shot unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

Willingham said his investigation showed the teacher told students to research and re-enact a current event of their choosing. The students picked the killings of Brown and Trayvon Martin, who was fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in 2012, he said.

Students used paper guns and bullets, and students portraying victims fell on pillows, he said.

Willingham said the teacher "made a mistake" in judgment by having students re-enact the shootings.

Some years ago my mother and I discussed the shooting death, by Los Angeles Police Department cops, of a man shot after he led the cops on one of those vintage California freeway chases.

At the end of the chase, the man got out of his car and seemed to wave his hand in a menacing fashion. The police shot him over 40 times, something that often gets the cops labeled "trigger-happy." Turns out he was unarmed.

But there was very little controversy. Why?

The deceased, the guy who led the cops on the chase, was white. Without the racist-cops-shot-unarmed-black/Hispanic-civilian angle, the media, as usual, showed zero interest. Or, as my mother put it, as far as the media were concerned, the white motorist was "just another dead fly."

This brings us to the shooting death of a 58-year-oldhomeless man in Florida. The police arrested two black suspects, one age 12, the other 16. The murder victim was white.

In nearly a full hour of cable news coverage yesterday morning, neither CNN, MSNBC, nor Fox even mentioned the story. Of course, it's possible one or more outlets covered the story, but it doesn’t appear so. A 12-year-old was arrested for murder? And the 12-year-old had a 16-year-old accomplice, arrested on unrelated charges. In a local news story, the homeless man's sister asked: "Twelve years old, how does he even get a gun? Where was his parents [sic] watching him?"  Not national news?

Where is President Barack Obama, who famously said, "If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon [Martin]"? Where is the Rev. Jesse Jackson who, after the "unfavorable" verdict in the Trayvon Martin case, said, "Blacks are under attack"? The murder even took place in notorious Florida, site of the Trayvon Martin case and a state with the controversial “stand your ground” law.

Maybe therein lies the media silence: The homeless white man isn't around to defend his use of the controversial Stand Your Ground law. He didn’t use Stand Your Ground. He’s dead.

If Barack Obama had 10-20 sons . . . .

Funny, no Trayvon Martin-style outrage over this: a White driver accidentally hits a kid with his car in Detroit. He pulls over to see if the kid is okay (BIG MISTAKE!) and is beaten almost to death by a mob of 11 Black guys who also rob him. Yeah, that’s Detroit and that’s the REAL racism in America.

Reports say the kid he hit sustained only a broken leg as a result of the accident, but for pulling over and doing the “morally right” thing in the American killing field I call Detroitistan, the poor White schnook was rushed to the hospital where he is in critical condition and clinging to life. He was also lucky that some random, courageous Black woman stepped in and yelled at the Black mob to stop (assuming her story is accurate). She saved this guy’s life. And, sadly, she is the real minority in “Get Whitey” Detroit. She refused to give her name to a Detroit news radio station.
