Ronda Rousey KOs Bethe Correia In 34 Seconds At UFC 190 Title Bout

Ronda Rousey is quickly becoming one of the most iconic athletes in sports. On a night when many of the biggest superstars from sports and entertainment, including NBA stars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, NFL star Aaron Rodgers, and actors Sylvester Stallone and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson were tweeting to her to wish her luck, she rose to the occasion yet again.

She needed only 34 seconds this time to retain her women's bantamweight title over Bethe Correia, but this wasn't the same old Rousey.

Her striking, which some said was her weakness, led her to the one-sided victory in the main event of UFC 190 at HSBC Arena Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Rousey's striking overwhelmed Correia, whose striking had led her to a 9-0 mark entering the bout. But Rousey ripped Correia with clean, hard shots and finished it with a right to the temple. Correia fell on her face as referee John McCarthy quickly stopped it.

The 2003-04 Los Angeles Lakers are the subject of a fascinating oral history over at Bleacher Report, and you should definitely check the whole thing out.

That legendary squad, a super-team in every sense, reached the NBA Finals but flamed out in spectacular fashion.

But they were entertaining as hell, on and off the court.

The Shaquille O’Neal-Kobe Bryant feud reached its tipping point that season, after Bryant publicly called out Shaq for being lazy and out of shape.

According to John Black, Lakers vice president of public relations, O’Neal threatened to end Kobe’s life. Whoa:

After the Lakers’ bid to win four consecutive championships fell short with a second-round loss to the eventual champion San Antonio Spurs in 2003, the franchise appeared to solidify its chance of claiming another trophy when future Hall of Famers Gary Payton and Karl Malone elected to sign free-agent contracts far below their market value that summer in order to win the one honor that had eluded them—a title. [...] Their signings came less than two weeks after Lakers superstar guard Kobe Bryant was charged with the sexual assault of a Colorado hotel employee and faced the possibility of life in prison if found guilty.

The NBA and Hollywood Unite for the Premiere of ‘Kobe Bryant’s Muse’

The NBA and Hollywood came together on Thursday at the London West Hollywood hotel to celebrate the premiere of “Kobe Bryant’s Muse,” the upcoming Showtime documentary that tells the story of the basketball icon’s career to date.

Gotham Chopra, the film’s director and son of Deepak Chopra, said that one of the coolest experiences while working on the film was watching Kobe work out in an empty gym, or watching him play in an empty Staples Center (the current home of the Los Angeles Lakers) at 3 a.m.

“It’s like watching Picasso in an empty studio,” Chopra said.

At 6’6″, Kobe Bryant towered over most everyone on the red carpet, but showed great humility when talking about this new, more forthcoming phase of his life.

“I’m just constantly curious,” Bryant said. “If you have an idea, and if you’re obsessive about what you do, I want to know why.”

Bryant, who said he was first inspired by the idea of a muse from Michael Jackson and the creation of “Thriller,” has recently spent time reaching out to industry leaders like Anna Wintour, Arianna Huffington and Oprah.

Lakers Star Kobe Bryant Talks About dealing with Phil Jackson’s Mind Games

If Phil Jackson is playing the same Jedi mind tricks with Carmelo Anthony he did with Kobe Bryant when they were winning championships together, it will certainly make for a fascinating interview one day.

Bryant revealed to GQ Magazine in a story posted online Tuesday that Jackson would press his buttons so often that at one point he thought, “F--- it. I’m done with this guy” when Jackson was the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and Bryant was his young star.

At the same time, Bryant admitted that he was “very stubborn” and like a “wild horse” in his early years and Jackson was only “trying to tame me,” according to the interview.

Bryant told a story of how he would speak to Jackson in secret and then Jackson would use those very same conversations to paint an unflattering picture of Bryant to the media during the Lakers run of three straight titles from 2000-02.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant is reportedly expected to miss the remainder of the 2014-15 season with a torn rotator cuff, per ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne. The 36-year-old has now suffered a devastating injury in three consecutive seasons.

Kobe's stoicism is on display in The Players' Tribune's video of him receiving the heartbreaking diagnosis.

The Lakers weren't going anywhere, anyway; the best possible outcome for this season was for this rotten team to lose enough games to keep its top-5 protected pick in the upcoming draft, so even if Kobe could play again this season, neither he nor L.A.'s brass have any incentive to put more basketball on his weary bones before November. And that's if you accept the dubious proposition that Kobe was helping the Lakers win games in the first place. He was posting ghastly numbers at both ends of the floor, and even his own teammates have acknowledged that the team is better when his role is smaller.
