California is restricting publicly funded travel to four more states because of recent laws that leaders here view as discriminatory against gay and transgender people.

All totaled, California now bans most state-funded travel to eight states.

The new additions to California’s restricted travel list are Texas, Alabama, Kentucky and South Dakota.

More information has been released about John Russel Houser today. Houser opened fire in a movie theater during the 7 p.m. showing of Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck” last night in Lafayette, Louisiana, which killed two people and injured nine. The Grand Theater where the incident took place is also a gun free zone. Houser committed suicide during the event, though he had parked his blue Lincoln Continental by the exit, prompting authorities to suspect that he had planned to flee the scene. He had lived in a Motel 6 in Phenix City, Alabama, which is right across the river from Columbus, Georgia, where the Columbus State University acknowledged that Houser had attended the institution, receiving a degree in accounting in 1988. He was also active in local politics. Yet, he also had a history of mental illness, and was considered generally unbalanced by members of his family. They described him as suffering from maniac depression, possibly bi-polar disorder in court documents. In fact, Mr. Houser appears to have been a very unwell man (via AP):

A dollar goes much further in low-cost Alabama than it does in almost every other state. One way of measuring this is the "regional price parities" data published by Bureau of Economic Analysis, which uses Census information and economic data to calculate the relative value of earnings in each state.

The federal data examines the cost of various goods and services, including rents. Those costs are lower in only two states, Mississippi and Arkansas.

SELMA, Ala. - An Alabama teacher was suspended without pay after being accused of having sixth-grade students re-enact the deadly police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the Trayvon Martin killing in Florida.

The Selma Times-Journal quoted Dallas County School Superintendent Don Willingham as saying the social studies teacher used poor judgment during a lesson on current events.

School officials haven't identified the teacher, who works at Brantley Elementary School.

Administrators were alerted to the Ferguson re-enactment this week after the mother of a student in the class posted a complaint on Facebook. The Missouri city has been a hotbed of protests since a police officer fatally shot unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

Willingham said his investigation showed the teacher told students to research and re-enact a current event of their choosing. The students picked the killings of Brown and Trayvon Martin, who was fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in 2012, he said.

Students used paper guns and bullets, and students portraying victims fell on pillows, he said.

Willingham said the teacher "made a mistake" in judgment by having students re-enact the shootings.

ALABAMA − Less than three months before the June primary, four Alabama counties had more voters on their rolls than what the Census Bureau says is their voting age population.

Officials give a number of reasons for that, including under-counting by the census.

Secretary of State Jim Bennett said the discrepancies create opportunity for voting fraud.

“Every duplicate name and every bad address is just an opportunity for crooks to attempt to manipulate our elections,” Bennett said.

Each county has a three-person board of registrars that is responsible for maintaining the voting lists with help from the secretary of state’s office.

The county boards receive notification when a person dies, registers in another county, gets a driver’s license in another state or is convicted of a disqualifying felony. The county boards are responsible for removing names from the list.

As of March, Greene, Hale, Lowndes and Macon counties had more active, registered voters than what the census estimated as their 18-and-older population in 2012.

Active voters are those who have not been placed on inactive status. That happens when the periodic update cards from county boards are returned as undeliverable, or if they don’t vote for four years (two federal election cycles).

A statement made on the floor of the state house last month in Montgomery got a loud reply this afternoon from angry parents.

State representative Alvin Holmes (D) Montgomery, said republican lawmakers would support abortion if their daughters became pregnant by black men. Holmes later said he would offer $100,000 cash to anyone who could show "a whole bunch of whites" have adopted black children in Alabama.

Today at the state house, white parents who adopted mixed race or minority children said it's time for Holmes to 'pay up.'

Beverly Owings is an adoptive mother of a 13-year-old bi-racial daughter. "I would like for him to 'man up.' He's made the statement. He needs to put his money where is mouth is."

Owings, a supporter of trans racial adoptions in Alabama, is part of a movement called Faces of Families in Alabama.

Ahead of the midterm elections, Republicans are still calling for the law's repeal -- some more bluntly than others. Republican Will Brooke, who's running to replace retiring Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., released a campaign video last week in which he literally shoots through a printed-out copy of the Affordable Care Act. His bullets, however, can't fully penetrate the lengthy law.
