Stories Differ In Georgia Confederate Flag Flap

 A black child's birthday party in Georgia was interrupted by a group of men driving pickup trucks with Confederate flags who were allegedly armed and threatening violence.

Video of the incident showed at least seven trucks with both Confederate and American flags driving past the outraged party-goers in Douglasville on Saturday.

A woman who posted a second video says that one of the white truck drivers, who she alleged were armed, said he would 'kill y’all [N-words]'.

Black Confederate Flag Supporter Killed In Highway Motor Accident Caused By Hecklers

Anthony Hervey — a 49-year-old black activist known for being a vocal proponent of the Confederate flag — died Sunday in a car crash caused by a car-full of black hecklers who chased and verbally attacked Hervey, driving his vehicle off the Mississippi highway.

Hervey was driving home from a rally to preserve the Linn Park Confederate Monument in Birmingham, Alabama, the Daily Mail reports. The memorial is soon to be removed from the park pursuant to a recent vote by Birmingham political leaders.

Hervey was a well-known black activist for preserving the Confederate flag who’s advocacy dates back to more than two decades ago.

Confederate Flag Supporters Rise Up To Defend Embattled Symbol

OCALA, Fla. (Reuters) - An eight-mile convoy of pickups, motorcycles and cars wound through a central Florida town on Sunday in a show of support for the Confederate flag, as a backlash against its banishment from public landmarks across the South picks up steam.
Horns blared and hundreds of the rebel flags fluttered as more than 1,500 vehicles and some 4,500 people turned out for the "Florida Southern Pride Ride" in Ocala, according to police estimates. Vehicles from states across the South and as far away as California participated.

"That flag has a lot of different meanings to a lot of different people," said David Stone, 38, who organized the event. "It doesn't symbolize hate unless you think it's hate - and that's your problem, not mine.”

Confederate Flag Battle Erupts In Congress amid Unexpected debate Over Displays In Cemeteries

Three weeks after a racially motivated massacre in a black church in Charleston, S.C., the Confederate battle flag will no longer fly on the grounds of the South Carolina State House, following a bitter debate over its role as a symbol of racism and hate.

The shooting that left nine dead at Emanuel AME Church and subsequent images of the alleged gunman holding the battle flag set off a national debate about the flag’s meaning and history. On Thursday, Gov. Nikki Haley (R) signed legislation to remove the flag, which has flown over the capitol’s dome or on its grounds since 1961.

The furor over the flag rippled through the halls of Congress on Thursday when House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) called for a review of Confederate symbols and memorabilia, which is likely to include those on display in the Capitol.

Boehner was forced to halt consideration of a government funding measure after it became engulfed by the Confederate flag controversy and whether it was appropriate to display the flags at national cemeteries where Confederate soldiers are buried.

Emotions Run High During Confederate Flag Rally At State House

Emotions ran high during a Confederate Flag rally at the state house Monday afternoon.

In comparison to a similar rally last week, this time more folks turned out who support the flag staying on the State House grounds. There were words exchanged between both sides.

"We won't let you repeat the history of that flag, that hateful flag that lynched people," state National Action Network president Elder James Johnson yelled to a flag supporter.

Between verbal jousting, flag opponents made repeated calls for the flag to come down.

One of those calling for it to be moved was the granddaughter of late US Senator Strom Thurmond.

In the early part of his political career, Thurmond was an avowed segregationist.

"It promotes all negative things, hatred and all the things that have happened that kept our ancestors in bondage," Wanda Bailey said.

Minnesota Fireman Flies Confederate Flag At Independence Day Parade

ALBERT LEA, Minn. (WCCO) — A small-town Minnesota firefighter has stirred up a firestorm by flying the Confederate flag at an Independence Day parade.

Brian Nielsen is a volunteer firefighter in the town of Hartland. He said he was demonstrating against political correctness when he flew the flag at Friday’s parade in Albert Lea. But as Nina Moini reports, he got a stronger reaction than he ever expected.

He’s used to putting out fires, not starting them.

“I take full responsibility for what I did,” Nielsen said.

Volunteer firefighter Brian Nielsen says he didn’t mean to offend anyone when he attached a Confederate flag onto a city of Hartland fire truck during this past Friday’s parade in nearby Albert Lea.

“Probably shouldn’t have done it with our fire truck,” Nielsen said.

He says he doesn’t even own a Confederate flag. He borrowed it from a friend because he feels politicians have gone too far to please some voters.

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Reuters) - Fourth of July holidaymakers ignored a call to boycott Georgia's Stone Mountain Park, known as the "Confederate Rushmore," over its display of the contentious Confederate flag.

Hundreds of people had staked out spots at the 3,200-acre (1,295-hectare) privately run park by noon on Saturday for nighttime laser and fireworks shows. They shrugged off heavy rain on the park's busiest day of the year as well as the boycott call.

Democratic state Representative LaDawn Blackett Jones this week urged people to stay away from the park 10 miles (16 km) east of Atlanta because it flies three flags of the pro-slavery Confederacy alongside the U.S. and Georgia state flags.

Bobbie Smith of Fitzgerald, Georgia, who was camping at Stone Mountain with her family, called the boycott call "just stupid."

“This whole park is a Confederate memorial. If you don’t have the flag here, where on Earth would you put it?” she said.

Confederate Flag Removal ‘Also A Feminist Act’

Cultural critic and writer Michaela Angela Davis argued that the removal of the Confederate flag on South Carolina’s statehouse by protester Bree Newsome was “very American” and “also a feminist act” on Friday’s “CNN Newsroom.”

Davis said Newsome’s actions were “very American. She’s a patriot. That’s a freedom fighter act. She was a flag slayer in this great patriotic tradition. We have always gone against laws that we thought were against humanity. Walking across the bridge in Selma, Alabama was breaking the law. We do this.”

Davis continued, “it was also a feminist act, we have to remember that three black women were going to be buried on that day. So, there’s something also as a human being, do we honor them by them being buried under that flag today? So, the urgency in which — because now the governor says ‘We have to make a date to talk about talking about taking it down.’ But, on that day when that community is in so much pain, that flag is a constant reminder. And again, three women were buried on that day. And one women went up and got that flag down.”

Walmart Apologizes For Making ISIS Flag Cake After Denying Request For Confederate Flag

Walmart was frequently cited last week as the first major retailer to publicly distance itself from the renewed furor surrounding the Confederate flag. On Friday, a customer in Louisiana who was denied his request for a cake decorated with the flag’s image, decided to see how far the store would go with their stance, and found out it was not very far after all.

Chuck Netzhammer took to YouTube on Friday, explaining that after he was denied the Confederate flag’s image on the cake, he requested that the make one with the ISIS battle flag instead. To his shock, Walmart didn’t say no, and he said in his video that the retailer had to explain why it would allow the flag while “alienating Southern Americans.”

Antietam, Other Parks Stop Selling Items With The Confederate Flag

Workers at Antietam National Battlefield took Confederate flags, T-shirts and magnets off gift shop shelves Thursday as the National Park Service announced plans to stop selling some items with the increasingly controversial symbol.

Park service officials said they would stop "stand-alone depictions" of the familiar battle flag, which has 13 white stars on a blue "X" over a red field. They said educational items such as books, exhibits, and media showing re-enactments and interpretive programs may use images of the battle flag "in its historical context" as long as they cannot be "physically detached."

"We strive to tell the complete story of America," National Park Service director Jonathan B. Jarvis said in a statement. "All sales items in parks are evaluated based on educational value and their connection to the park. Any stand-alone depictions of Confederate flags have no place in park stores."

NASCAR's position on the Confederate flag has evolved as CEO Brian France works to distance the sport from what he said Saturday was an "offensive and divisive symbol."

In a statement Saturday, France reiterated the sport's policy preventing the use of the flag in any official capacity -- a stance that drew headlines Tuesday when NASCAR backed the removal of the Confederate flag from South Carolina's Capitol grounds.

"In all areas that NASCAR controls on a given race weekend, the flag has no presence," France said. "We have been clear in support of this position throughout our industry and to those across the country who have called for the eradication of the Confederate Flag."

Confederate Flag Is A Symbol Of America's Culture Wars

Pretend for a minute you're a professional black woman living in Washington, DC. During your lifetime, things have mostly improved. But everywhere, vestiges of the past still haunt you. Living in Washington, DC, you probably have to take Jefferson Davis highway once in a while -- a road named after the president of the Confederacy. That's just one of the daily reminders.

In the wake of the horrific shooting of nine African-Americans at the Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina, last week, I talked with Crystal Wright, who blogs at a site called Conservative Black Chick, about calls to remove the Confederate flag. "I'm a black woman and I was raised in the South," she told me, "so as a black person, regardless of politics, [the flag] bothers me."

"You know, when I go home to Richmond…to visit my family, I see the Confederate flag in people's yards," she continued.

FORT HAMILTON (WABC) --As the debate over the polarizing Confederate Flag continues nationwide, other symbols of the Confederacy closer to home, are not only being called out, but protested.

At Fort Hamilton Army Base, Reverend Al Sharpton and others demanded the removal of a street sign honoring Confederate General Robert E. Lee, calling the sign offensive and hypocritical.

Rev. Sharpton, along with several dozen others marched around the base in protest on Saturday afternoon, calling for the street sign to be removed, along with any other symbols of the confederacy, which support slavery, and in many eyes perpetuates the institution of racism.

Woman Arrested After Removing South Carolina’s Confederate Flag

One woman was arrested after removing the Confederate flag from its lofty perch outside the Columbia, S.C., State House, and now people are tweeting #FreeBree to show their support.

The woman, identified as Bree Newsome by nationally prominent activist and educator DeRay McKesson, scaled the 30-foot flagpole to remove the flag just before dawn, the Associated Press reports.

Newsome, who is black, and the man who assisted her, James Ian Dyson, were arrested by police, taken to a detention center, and charged with defacing a monument, according to The Guardian.

Within hours of removing the flag, Newsome was flooded with support on social media. Twitter users shared photos of her along with the hashtag “#FreeBree,” which became the top-trending topic in the United States at around 9:30 a.m. ET.

For Many Black Americans, Confederate Flag Debate A Distraction

As calls grow to remove the Confederate flag from public spaces across America's South, Vanessa White says she questions whether that would mark real progress for black Americans like her.

The 57-year-old Compton, California construction worker has seen and endured too much, she says, to be excited. Over the years, five members of her family have been killed by guns: her two brothers, at the ages of 28 and 38; her nephew, at 19; her niece, at 16; and her niece's mother, at 28. All of them had dropped out of school in their teens.

"We never felt like we were allowed near normal life," said White, speaking from the tidy, two-story home she purchased last year in the struggling suburb south of Los Angeles.

Rev. Al Sharpton quickly joined critics of the Confederate flag flying outside the South Carolina Statehouse, but the civil rights leader is going one step further and plans to denounce Robert E. Lee Street and a Confederate flag painting in the New York State Capitol Building on Saturday.

In a tweet posted Friday, Sharpton’s National Action Network promoted the Saturday event as a “vigil for the victims lost to violence and to denounce Robert E. Lee Street and Confederate Flag Painting in New York State Capitol Building.”

Confederate Battle Flag: What It Is And What It Isn't

(CNN)The racist massacre in a South Carolina church has tipped the balance in a decades-old tug of war over the meaning of the Confederate battle flag.

Its champions have argued it's a symbol of Southern culture, the historic flag of the South.

Critics say it's a racist symbol that represents a war to uphold slavery and, later, a battle to oppose civil rights advances.

We take a look at the flags of the Confederacy to sort out the facts.

It's not the original Confederate flag

The Confederate states went through three official flags during the four-year Civil War, but none of them was the battle flag that's at the center of the current controversy.

The first was the "Stars and Bars," approved in 1861.

Like its Union sibling, it had a dark blue field in the upper left corner -- or the canton -- and only three stripes, two red and one white. It had seven stars to represent the breakaway states: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. And the white stars formed a circle, much like the original Betsy Ross American flag.

Clinton Says Confederate Flag Has No Place In US

FLORISSANT, Mo. (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday the Confederate battle flag should not be displayed "anywhere," weighing in as South Carolina lawmakers seek to remove it from the grounds of their statehouse.

The Democratic presidential candidate called the deadly shootings of nine black church members in Charleston, South Carolina, "an act of racist terrorism perpetrated in a house of God."

Clinton called the Confederate flag a "symbol of our nation's racist past that has no place in our present or our future. It shouldn't fly there. It shouldn't fly anywhere."

Clinton joined with church members in the St. Louis suburbs, near the violent protests touched off last year in nearby Ferguson after the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed young black man who was shot by a white police officer.

Clinton said she appreciated the work of South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a Republican, and state lawmakers who are working to remove the Confederate flag from the statehouse grounds. She also commended Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the Arkansas-based company on whose board she once served, for announcing it would remove any product from its stores that features the Confederate flag.

Democrats Use Confederate Flag Flap In South Carolina To Solicit Donations

National Democrats tried Monday evening to raise funds off the South Carolina Confederate flag flap.

In a blast email sent after 7 p.m. Monday, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said the issue of the Confederate flag, which zoomed to the front of national consciousness after a white supremacist was charged with nine counts of murder after a shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, was “not over yet.”

The email says Gov. Nikki Haley’s announcement is not legislation and asked recipients to answer the question, “Should South Carolina take down the Confederate flag from its state Capitol?”

It reads, “41,338 people have recorded their answer — but we still haven’t heard from you,” it asks the subscriber by name.

A person cannot answer the survey question at the DCCC site without putting in an email address, which gives the DCCC the ability to solicit contributions.

Once the person answers the question and provides an address, the page reads, “Thanks for taking the instant poll today! Now take the next step: Donate $3 or more to support Democrats, and we’ll send you this free ‘Yes. I Voted Obama’ sticker in the mail!”
