The New York Times published a blockbuster report this afternoon claiming that a legal ‘loophole’ in firearm background check laws allowed the Charleston shooter to purchase a gun he wasn’t legally allowed to have. There’s only one problem with the story: it was government incompetence, not a loophole, that rendered the background check ineffective. Here’s how the NYT described what happened:

WASHINGTON — The man accused of killing nine people in an historically black South Carolina church last month should not have been able to buy a gun, the F.B.I. said Friday in what was the latest acknowledgment of flaws in the national background check system.

A loophole in the check system allowed the man, Dylann Roof, to buy the .45-caliber handgun despite his having previously admitted to drug possession, the bureau said. Those conducting the background check did not have access to that police report.

CNN Inserts Plan for Anti-Poverty Spending into Discussion of Charleston Massacre

On Friday's New Day, during a discussion of the then-upcoming funeral for South Carolina State Senator Clementa Pinckney, CNN host Alisyn Camerota brought up issues of high poverty in South Carolina's black population and invited Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn to use the recent church massacre as a springboard to push for diverting more federal money into high-poverty areas.

After Charleston's Democratic mayor, Joseph Riley, spoke of the accomplishments of his tenure, Camerota posed:

And you have accomplished that. Yet, there's so much more work to be done. We have some statistics about what South Carolina looks like. South Carolina poverty rate for whites, 13 percent. For blacks, 30 percent. South Carolina per capita income: $28,000 for whites, $15,000 for blacks. Congressman, after this funeral, what will you go back to Congress and do? What can you change now?

Almost immediately after a white killer gunned down nine black worshippers at a historic church in Charleston, South Carolina, out came the politics.

On the Capitol grounds in Columbia flies the battlefield flag of Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, often erroneously called the "Confederate flag." Right after the shooting, calls came for the flag's removal. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, until now, had defended the compromise that moved the flag in 2000 from the Capitol dome, where it had flown since 1962, to a nearby Confederate soldier memorial on the statehouse grounds.

The killer did not pull out a Confederate flag and use it to kill people. He used a .45. Also, he had flags of apartheid South Africa and separatist Rhodesia. Ban them, too?

President Barack Obama took the opportunity to make the case for additional gun control legislation. "We don't have all the facts," he said, "but we do know that once again, innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun."

OK, now that Obama mentions it, suppose one or more of the churchgoers had been armed? South Carolina is one of 40 states that allow citizens to carry a concealed weapon on a "shall issue" basis, meaning that as long as you pass that state's basic qualification requirements -- things like age, training, no criminal history, etc. -- the state will not deny you a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Permit holders, however, cannot bring a firearm to a "house of worship." Whether the confessed Charleston killer, Dylann Roof, knew this, we don't know. We do know that one of Roof's friends said Roof wanted to attack a local college. But, according to the friend, Roof switched targets because of the security around the school. If the school security deterred the killer, might allowing concealed carry in a "house of worship" have a similar effect?

How about we spend a little time on whether someone could have and should have said something to someone? Roof apparently told people of his intentions to start a "race war" -- and at least some friends knew he possessed a .45.

Obama said the tragedy reminds us "we've got a lot of work to do." He spoke of the 1963 church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, where four black girls were killed and nearly two dozen people wounded.

But the differences between Birmingham in 1963 and Charleston in 2015 are staggering.

In 1963, Birmingham was home to one of the most virulent chapters of the KKK. Bombings of black properties were so frequent people referred to the city as "Bombingham." In fact, this church bombing was the third bombing to take place in that city since its public schools were forcibly desegregated just 11 days earlier.

Bull Connor, the commissioner of public safety, infamously sicced dogs and turned water hoses on civil rights workers. The governor, George Wallace, once stood in front of the state Capitol and shouted, "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever." The FBI was led by J. Edgar Hoover, who believed the civil rights movement was communist-inspired. Reportedly, the FBI knew fairly soon who had committed the bombing but sat on the information. It took decades before all of those involved were brought to justice. That was 1963.

Today the U.S. attorney general is a black woman, the second consecutive black person to hold the position. She called for a federal investigation of the Charleston shooting. South Carolina's governor is Nikki Haley, a woman of Indian descent. One of the state's U.S. senators is a black man, Tim Scott, the first black person from the South to serve in the Senate since four years after Reconstruction. Charleston's popular mayor has held the job for four decades and is respected by both black and white communities.

Does the racist Charleston killer represent a growing, threatening underbelly of American racism?

In 1969, Charles Manson, like the Charleston killer, wanted to start a "race war." Over the course of two nights, he ordered the murder of seven people. And Manson had a "family" of followers. The Charleston killer complained that he could recruit no help. Did we launch into a national soul search over whether Manson represented white racism? No, we placed him in the category of murderous, evil deviant -- the same place to put the Charleston killer.

In 1960, 60 percent of Americans said they would "never" vote for a black president. In 2008, America elected a black man as president of the United States. A 2006 Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll found that only 4 percent of Democratic voters and 3 percent of Republican voters would not vote for a black president. Obama got a greater share of the "white vote" than even John Kerry did in 2004. Was Kerry a victim of racial discrimination?

This is not your grandfather's America.

Charleston race killer Dylann Roof originally planned to shoot up a college before changing his mind and massacring worshipers in church, according to a shocked black drinking buddy who counted Roof as a 'homeboy'.

Christon Scriven, 22, said that Roof drunkenly described a scheme to massacre students on the College of Charleston campus just a week ago.

But Roof seemingly modified his plan when he sat in on a Bible study class at the city's AME Emanuel Church for almost an hour, then opened fire on his nine victims.

Scriven said he didn't believe Roof would actually carry out his plans for a mass shooting - but was still scared he could turn violent, so hid his gun when he wasn't looking.

He and another friend - Roof's high school pal Joey Meek - stashed his .45-caliber handgun, a birthday present, in an air condition vent, but gave it back once they had all sobered up.

The Killer's Racist Manifesto

Charleston killer Dylann Roof apparently left a ranting, racist manifesto on the internet calling for a new civil war in America before staging his massacre in a church.

A website hosting the document, seemingly written by Roof, 21, not long before the killings at the Emanuel AME Church emerged Saturday, and said he had 'no choice' but to carry out the massacre.

On the site, he pinpoints Charleston, South Carolina, as his target because of its high proportion of blacks, bemoans that there is 'no real KKK' to help him, and claims he has 'no choice' but to act.

The site also contained a cache of images of Roof burning the America flag, spitting on it, posing next to Confederate landmarks and standing menacingly with a gun pointed at the camera.

He also embarks on a bizarre digression on other races, where he dubs East Asians 'allies', calls Hispanics 'a huge problem' and says he wishes all Jews would turn blue for a day so people would realize they are different to whites.

In the text, which he implies was written not long before the killings, he declares: 'N****rs are stupid and violent.... Black people view everything through a racial lense [sic].'

Friend Says Suspect In South Carolina Church Massacre Railed About Blacks

CHARLESTON, S.C. — In recent weeks, Dylann Storm Roof reconnected with a childhood buddy he hadn’t seen in five years and started railing about the Trayvon Martin case, about black people “taking over the world” and about the need for someone to do something about it for the sake of “the white race,” the friend said Thursday.

On Thursday, Roof, 21, was arrested in the shooting deaths of nine people during a prayer meeting at a historic black church in Charleston — an attack decried by stunned community leaders and politicians as a hate crime.

In the hours after the Wednesday night bloodbath, a portrait began to take shape of Roof as someone with racist views and at least two recent run-ins with the law. On his Facebook page, the young white man wore a jacket with the flags of the former white-racist regimes of South Africa and Rhodesia.

The white gunman who allegedly shot dead nine people during a bible study meeting at an African-American church in South Carolina last night has been caught in North Carolina.

Dylann Storm Roof, who sparked an overnight manhunt after fleeing the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, was taken into custody during a traffic stop in Shelby just after 11am.

The 21-year-old was caught after a member of the public spotted his car and called cops to report 'suspicious activity', Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen said. He was in the car and armed when he was approached by an officer but he was cooperative and taken into custody.

'In America, we don't let bad people like this get away,' said Charleston Mayor, Joseph P. Riley, Jr. at a press conference announcing the arrest.

On Wednesday, Roof, from Columbia, had allegedly entered the church and joined the bible study group before suddenly opening fire an hour later.

One survivor recounted how he reloaded his gun five times as he picked off his victims - killing three females and six males, including the Reverend Clementa Pinckney, who is also a South Carolina state senator.

5-Year-Old Played Dead And Survived Church Shooting That Killed 9 In Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston police are searching for a gunman who shot and killed nine people, including a state senator, during a Bible study at a historic Calhoun Street church Wednesday, Chief Greg Mullen said.

Mullen said the shooter sat inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church at 110 Calhoun Street for about an hour before he stood up about 9:05 p.m. and started shooting. Eight people died inside the church and a ninth died at the hospital. Six of the victims were female and three were male, he said.

Family members who were briefed by chaplains at a nearby hotel told ABC News that a 5-year-old child was in the church at the time of the shooting and survived by playing dead.

"This tragedy that we're addressing right now is indescribable," Mullen said. "No one in this community will ever forget this night."

An active manhunt is on for a suspect described as a clean-shaven white male, about 20-25 years old, with a slender build. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt or hoodie with distinctive markings, blue jeans and Timberland boots, Charleston police said.

Retired neurosurgeon and Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson took to Facebook Thursday to express his condolences to the families of the nine church congregants shot and killed by a deranged gunman in Charleston, South Carolina.

“Last night evil walked the streets of Charleston. My heart aches for the families of the victims. I pray for the families left behind,” he wrote. “I pray for the community scared and hurting. I also pray you and I can conquer hatred.

“In my lifetime I have seen such great progress. Though racial based hate is still very much alive as last night so violently reminded us,” Mr. Carson continued. “But I worry about a new hate that is growing in our great nation. I fear our intolerance of one another is the new battle ground of evil. Today many feel it is OK to hate someone who thinks differently than you do.

Black Activists Fear ‘Race War’ Amid Charleston Shooting

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Black community activists raised alarms Thursday about the mass murder at the historic black church potentially sparking race riots in Charleston, South Carolina.

“We don’t need any more bloodshed and we don’t need a race war,” pleaded J. Denise Cromwell, a black community activists. “Charleston has a lot of racial tension. … We’re drowning and someone is pouring water over us.”

Ms. Cromwell said that nerves were still raw from the fatal shooting two months ago of a black man, Walter Scott, by a white police officer in neighboring North Charleston, which ignited major protests.

Church Shooting Suspect Returning To Charleston; Coroner Identifies Victims

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -The father and uncle of the 21-year-old man accused of shooting nine people at a historic downtown Charleston church notified police and positively identified him as the person shown in surveillance photographs, according to court affidavits released Friday.

Dylann Roof remains locked up at the Al Cannon Detention Center following his extradition from North Carolina and a bond hearing Friday afternoon, charged with nine counts of murder and one count of possession of a deadly weapon in the commission of a violent crime.

Court documents allege Roof entered the Emanuel AME Church at 110 Calhoun St. at approximately 8:06 p.m. where he met with parishioners who were conducting a bible study. After approximately an hour of studying, Roof stood up, pulled out a handgun and began shooting at the parishioners inside the hall, striking nine people, an affidavit states.

Investigators say prior to leaving the bible study room, Roof stood over a witness and uttered "a racially inflammatory statement to the witness."

Charleston Shooter Was On Drug Linked To Violent Outbursts

Charleston shooter Dylann Storm Roof was reportedly taking a drug that has been linked with sudden outbursts of violence, fitting the pattern of innumerable other mass shooters who were on or had recently come off pharmaceutical drugs linked to aggression.

According to a CBS News report, earlier this year when cops searched Roof after he was acting suspiciously inside a Bath and Body Works store, they found “orange strips” that Roof told officers was suboxone, a narcotic that is used to treat opiate addiction.

Suboxone is a habit-forming drug that has been connected with sudden outbursts of aggression.

A user on the MD Junction website relates how her husband “became violent, smashing things and threatening me,” after just a few days of coming off suboxone.

Another poster on the Drugs.com website tells the story of how his personality completely changed as a result of taking suboxone.

The individual relates how he became “nasty” and “violent” just weeks into taking the drug, adding that he would “snap” and be mean to people for no reason.

Another poster reveals how his son-in-law “completely changed on suboxone,” and that the drug sent him into “self-destruct mode.”
