CNN: Brian Williams Out As ‘Nightly News’ Anchor But Still With NBC

NEW YORK, June 17 (UPI) — Brian Williams and NBC have reached an agreement for the former NBC Nightly News anchor to remain with the network, but not in his previous post.

Williams is four months into his six-month suspension for inconsistencies in his reporting that have led some to speculate NBC would sever ties with him.

Sources told CNN Money that Williams will remain with the network, but will likely take a role on cable station MSNBC. The details of that new role have yet to be revealed.

“No one knows anything,” one source, an anchor, told CNN.

Another source told The New York Times an announcement about Williams’ future is likely to be made Thursday by NBC. The source said Williams will probably start off reporting breaking news.

Lester Holt wants Brian Williams’ $10M Salary

Lester Holt — who’s primed to permanently take overfor fibbing Brian Williams on “NBC Nightly News” — wants the same $10 million-per-year salary Williams was getting.

Holt’s agents want to quietly renegotiate his contract with NBC as the network tries to reach a resolution over Williams, who will not return to “Nightly News” following an internal investigation.

But insiders tell us it’s Holt who’s got the upper hand as NBC News has no backup anchor plan.

“There’s a lot of drama at NBC News,” said a source familiar with the upcoming negotiations. Holt is currently being paid about $4 million per year as the “Nightly News” weekend anchor and for other assignments. But the network so far has offered Holt less than lyin’ Brian was making to take over the newscast, a source said.

Brian Williams Will Likely Lose His Anchor Chair

A decision about Brian Williams’ fate at NBC could come as early as this week — and it looks like the embattled anchor won’t be returning to “NBC Nightly News.”

Sources tell Page Six that Williams will likely lose his anchor chair following the lengthy internal investigation into his alleged tall tales.

But NBC brass — led by NBCUniversal CEO and president Steve Burke and NBC News chairman Andy Lack — have been looking for a way to keep him at the network in a different, yet-to-be-agreed-upon role. One source told us, “Brian’s six-month suspension is over in early August, and NBC chiefs are under pressure to come up with a solution. The talks are complicated and are ongoing, and there has not yet been a deal. But it is likely he won’t be back in the ‘Nightly’ anchor chair. A decision could be made as early as this week, if all sides can reach an agreement.”

Industry insiders said NBC News staff, led by Lack, have been encouraged to think of alternative roles for Williams.

NBC Trying To Keep Brian Williams

Brian Williams may lose his seat as anchor of the "NBC Nightly News," but executives are looking for a way to keep him at the network in a new role.

Weeks of complex negotiations between Williams and NBC are not yet complete, according to sources with direct knowledge of the situation.


There are any number of possible outcomes. Several of the sources said Williams could end up leaving NBC altogether following a financial settlement.

But another possibility, and the one advanced in recent discussions, involves a new role for Williams.

Andy Lack, the chairman of NBC News, has been a proponent of this outcome.

"Andy's contorting to figure out a way to keep Brian," one of the sources said.

One of the sources described employee meetings where Lack asked attendees to "think creatively" about a new role for Williams.

With word emerging today that ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos gave “$50,001 to $100,000” to the Clinton Foundation, the network will soon face the Brian Williams Quandary — is its top “newsman” trustworthy when delivering news.

Stephanopoulos only disclosed the donations to the nonprofit when asked about them by a reporter from the Free Beacon (choosing to control the story through a statement to friendly liberal outlet, Politico).

In dozens and dozens of stories and interviews on the Clintons, the chief anchor never mentioned his hefty gifts. In fact, he fiercely questioned author Peter Schweizer last month about his book “Clinton Cash,” making unilateral statements that the book was hogwash.

“As you know, the Clinton campaign says you haven’t produced a shred of evidence that there was any official action as secretary that supported the interest of donors,” Stephanopoulos said. “We’ve done investigative work here at ABC News, found no proof of any kind of direct action. And an independent government ethics expert at the Sunlight Foundation Bill Allison wrote this: ‘There’s no smoking gun. No evidence that the changed policy is based on donations to the foundation. No smoking gun.’ Is there a smoking gun?”

Bill O'Reilly Has His Own Brian Williams Problem

After NBC News suspended anchor Brian Williams for erroneously claiming that he was nearly shot down in a helicopter while covering the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, Fox News host Bill O'Reilly went on a tear. On his television show, the top-rated cable news anchor declared that the American press isn't "half as responsible as the men who forged the nation." He bemoaned the supposed culture of deception within the liberal media, and he proclaimed that the Williams controversy should prompt questioning of other "distortions" by left-leaning outlets. Yet for years, O'Reilly has recounted dramatic stories about his own war reporting that don't withstand scrutiny—even claiming he acted heroically in a war zone that he apparently never set foot in.

O'Reilly has repeatedly told his audience that he was a war correspondent during the Falklands war and that he experienced combat during that 1982 conflict between the United Kingdom* and Argentina. He has often invoked this experience to emphasize that he understands war as only someone who has witnessed it could. As he once put it, "I've been there. That's really what separates me from most of these other bloviators. I bloviate, but I bloviate about stuff I've seen. They bloviate about stuff that they haven't."

Brian Williams: Selective Outrage and Double Standards

If Brian Williams, the anchor and face ofNBC News, goes, others should march right out the door behind him.

Williams, in 2003, filed a report about his experiences in Iraq. He accurately reported that a helicopter an hour in front of his took fire from an RPG. But over the years the story morphed into Williams claiming that his helicopter took an incoming RPG and other small arms fire. Other stories Williams told and filed are under review, including apparently exaggerated or false claims filed or stated during Hurricane Katrina. Williams claimed he saw a dead body floating in the street outside his New Orleans hotel, and that his hotel had been assaulted by gangs. Neither of which apparently is true.

Due to concerns about the credibility of the $10-million-a-year newsreader, NBCannounced Williams' six-month unpaid "suspension." Now six months is forever. When his replacement, the capable Lester Holt, settles in, soon it will likely be, "Brian, who?"

But what's the moral to the story -- that we hold reporters to a high expectation of accuracy and journalistic integrity? Really? Williams works for the same company that gives an hour-long nightly platform to the Rev. Al Sharpton, America's preeminent race-card hustler.

As to Hurricane Katrina, reporters filed false story after story about murders, gunshots and rapes, many discredited -- and many irresponsibly injecting the race issue. CNN's Wolf Blitzer, for example, said, "You simply get chills every time you see these poor individuals ... so tragically, so many of these people, almost all of them that we see, are so poor, and they are so black, and this is gonna raise lots of questions for people who are watching this story unfold." The ill treatment, Blitzer suggested, resulted from racism.

As for the importance of accuracy, CNN's Fareed Zakaria stands credibly accused of serial plagiarism. The left-of-center British publication The Week published a piece headlined, "Why Does Fareed Zakaria Still Have a Job?" Correspondent Ryan Cooper wrote: "CNN and Washington Post star Fareed Zakaria has committed dozens of acts of plagiarism and intellectual dishonesty. But Zakaria has not been hounded out of his job and shamed in the public square, as one would expect. Instead, he continues to go about his business as if nothing happened, revealing a disturbing double standard in the media industry."

Over at "60 Minutes," the married Steve Kroft reportedly bragged to his mistress that he enjoys a cozy relationship with President Barack Obama, whom Kroft calls "Barry." Conservatives have long accused Kroft of lobbing softball questions at Obama. Does Kroft's self-described status as Obama's "go-to" guy confirm conservatives' suspicion that he's in the tank for Obama? Crickets.

If exaggerations about war and war zones are career-ending for Brian Williams, does it apply to politicians?

Hillary Rodham Clinton, who could become our next president, falsely claimed that during a 1996 trip to Bosnia she took incoming fire. In 2008, she claimed: "I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base." But videotape showed no running, no head down, no snipers, no First-Lady-as-Rambo. And, as pre-arranged, she met a young Bosnian girl for the "greeting ceremony."

Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, served 30 years in the Senate, after 10 years in the House. From the book, "Stolen Valor," B.G. Burkett writes: "During a 1984 bid for reelection to the Senate ... Harkin boasted that he had served one year in Vietnam flying F-4s and F-8s on combat air patrols and photo-reconnaissance support missions. Challenged by Sen. Barry Goldwater, Harkin did a quick shuffle, claiming that he had actually flown combat sorties over Cuba during the sixties. Harkin finally admitted that he had not seen combat but had served as a ferry pilot stationed in Atsugi, Japan, flying aircraft to be repaired from Atsugi to the Philippines. When pressed by reporters to explain how much time he had really spent in Vietnam, Harkin estimated that over a year, he flew in and out of Vietnam a dozen or so times. But Harkin's military record showed no Vietnam service decorations. He finally conceded he had not flown combat air patrols in Vietnam and began describing himself as a Vietnam era vet."

What about Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., who -- many times -- falsely claimed he served "in Vietnam" and that he faced hostility when he "returned"? In fact, he received five deferments after which, The New York Times reported, "He landed a coveted spot in the Marine Reserve, which virtually guaranteed that he would not be sent to Vietnam. He joined a unit in Washington that conducted drills and other exercises and focused on local projects, like fixing a campground and organizing a Toys for Tots drive." He now calls himself a "Vietnam-era vet."

But tales and puffery are unacceptable over at NBC. Not to worry, though. Brian Williams still has options. He can announce his candidacy for the 2016 presidential race -- as a Democrat.

When Comcast acquired NBCUniversal in 2011, Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts called NBC News "the crown jewel" of his new empire. With good reason: At the time, the news division was dominant on all fronts. 'Today' was number-one in the morning, 'Nightly News' was number-one at night, and 'Meet The Press' was number-one on Sunday.

In four short years, Comcast's "crown jewel" has been tarnished. Not only have 'Today' and 'Meet' both fallen from first place, their falls have been accompanied by the excruciating public humiliation of the programs' top talent. Ann Curry, the former Today co-host, was privately undermined and publicly humiliated before being kicked off the show in 2012. David Gregory, the former moderator of 'Meet The Press', was hung out to dry for over a year before being booted in 2014.

Now, Brian Williams is the subject of an internal investigation into his false claim that he was on-board a Chinook helicopter that was hit by an RPG in Iraq. The Williams controversy has been made worse by the fact that he appears to have continued misleading viewers even as he apologized for his initial error.

NBC News’s senior executives are deeply divided about the fate of Brian Williams, the Nightly News anchor currently on leave for telling tall tales about his time in Iraq and, potentially, in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

At a meeting over the weekend at the New York City home of NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke, network executives huddled to decide Williams’s fate, but they emerged with little agreement on a path forward. The division is reflective of the broader disarray within NBC News.

With respect to Williams, one camp believes that, in the words of a source with knowledge of the situation, “Brian is cooked. Done. Has lost his credibility as an anchor and must go. The only question is who goes down with him.”

‘NBC Nightly News’ Anchor Brian Williams Suspended for Six Months Without Pay

Brian Williams has been suspended from his post as anchor of “NBC Nightly News” for six months without pay.

“We have decided today to suspend Brian Williams as Managing Editor and Anchor of NBC Nightly News for six months. The suspension will be without pay and is effective immediately,” NBC News president Deborah Turness said in a memo.

Williams has been the subject of controversy in recent days after he was forced to recant a 2003 Iraq war story in which he claimed a helicopter he was flying on was struck by RPG fire.

“This was wrong and completely inappropriate for someone in Brian’s position,” Turness said in the memo.

NBC News anchor Brian Williams is in quite a bit of trouble over his admission that his decade-long claim to have endured heavy fire while flying in a military helicopter over Baghdad in 2003 was a fabrication. Accordingly, journalists are beginning to review other extraordinary claims Williams made over the course of his career, and they are not short on material to parse.

The team over at GotNews flagged an interesting moment from a 2006 interview in which Williams waxed regretful about the devastating flooding in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

One rainy evening, three people walked into a bar and sat down. One was grim, another solemn, while the sole woman among them was absolutely giddy. The bartender poured a few shots of whiskey and said to the trio, “Why so grim, so solemn, so giddy?”

The grim man with squinty eyes and a huge forehead went first. “My life is over. I ‘conflated’ a couple of war stories, said I was aboard a helicopter in Iraq that got shot down when I wasn’t. Now, everything I’ve worked for my whole life is gone.”

“Gee, that’s tough,” said the bartender.

The even more-horse-faced solemn man next to him went next. “I said I won a bunch of medals for honor and bravery as captain of a fast patrol boat in Vietnam, but then all my comrades swiftly said I was lying. I lost the job I really wanted.”

“Damn. Rough. What about you, lady?” the bartender said to the broadly smiling blonde.

Why NBC Will Stand By Its $200M Man Brian Williams

 NBC News chief Deborah Turness has millions of reasons to save Brian Williams.

Without its chief anchor to keep it at the front of the news pack, “NBC Nightly News” is at risk of losing the multimillion dollar ad premium it has over rivals.

“Nightly News” raked in an estimated $200 million in annual ad revenue for NBC News in 2013. That’s $30 million more than its nearest rival, ABC’s “World News,” generated in 2013, and $50 million more than third place “CBS Evening News,” according to the latest full-year figures from Kantar Media.

If NBC loses its foothold among viewers ages 25 to 54, the key news audience for advertisers, it could cost parent company Comcast Corp., which installed Turness to focus on making the news division more profitable.

You know you’re in trouble when Tom Brokaw is out for your blood.

NBC’s most revered journalist is furious that Brian Williams is still in the anchor chair after he sheepishly admitted he hadn’t traveled on a helicopter hit by enemy fire.

 “Brokaw wants Williams’ head on a platter,” an NBC source said. “He is making a lot of noise at NBC that a lesser journalist or producer would have been immediately fired or suspended for a false report.”

 On Wednesday, Williams, 55, acknowledged that he had repeatedly said he was aboard a chopper that had been hit by a rocket-propelled grenade during a 2003 reporting trip to Iraq, when he was actually safely traveling in a different aircraft.

In the past week, The New York Times has ridiculed Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Gov. Chris Christie for having "fed panic" by ordering quarantines for health workers arriving from Ebola-plagued countries.

NBC News' Brian Williams opened his broadcast last Friday announcing that the Obama administration was trying "to restrain the Ebola panic."

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow complained that the "hysteria" over Ebola was getting "stupider."

In an interview with Benjamin Netanyahu aired on Monday's NBC Nightly News, anchor Brian Williams hyped how the Israeli Prime Minister was "under increasing fire for the civilian deaths we've seen in Gaza" and proceeded to hammer Netanyahu on the topic: "Last night our network aired scenes of the largest hospital in Gaza having to turn away dead bodies at the hospital morgue. There was no more room....How does it strike you as a father, as a human being?"

Following the tough questions to Netanyahu, Williams didn't bother to bring on a Palestinian official to equally grill, instead, he simply read a statement from Hamas terrorists: "Hamas tells NBC News in a statement tonight, quote, 'It is Netanyahu and his army of war criminals that have targeted and continue to target innocent and defenseless civilians. As for Hamas, every single Israeli killed by its fighters or its rockets except one have been soldiers in uniform, on duty, fully armed and on the battlefield.'"

NBC was the only network to report on the Democratic mayor of Charlotte's arrest on Wednesday evening, but they left out his party affiliation.

Anchor Brian Williams reported that Mayor Patrick Cannon was "busted today by the FBI after a sting operation several years in the making" but ignored that he was a Democrat. This isn't the first time the networks have left out the Democratic party affiliation of a scandal-embroiled mayor.
