4 Poll Numbers That Should Make Hillary Worried

By Chris Cillizza, July 27, 2015
Washington Post

Four poll numbers came out over the weekend that are decidedly sobering for Hillary Clinton's presidential prospects in 2016.

The first two come from NBC/Marist College polls conducted in Iowa and New Hampshire. In Iowa, 23 percent more people saw Clinton in an unfavorable light than a favorable one; in New Hampshire, that gap is 20 points.

Then there are these numbers from two national polls released over the weekend. Here's Clinton long-term favorable/unfavorable trend line in Gallup:

Huckabee Bashes Iran Deal With LBJ Ad Reboot

By David Jackson , July 14, 2015 USA Today

Mike Huckabee is reaching back into campaign advertising history to bash President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.

Huckabee’s campaign posted an updated version of the famous (or infamous) “Daisy Ad,” the 1964 television spot that President Lyndon Johnson’s campaign used to attack Republican challenger Barry Goldwater as a (nuclear) war monger.

Both the LBJ and the Huckabee ads show a little girl counting up the number of petals she plucks from a daisy.

When she reaches ten, an ominous voice begins to reverse the count back to zero — and a nuclear explosion fills the black-and-white screen.

Biden Supporters Insist 'All Signals Are Pointed' Towards A WH Run

By Ariel Cohen, July 9, 2015, Washington Examiner.

Will Vice President Joe Biden enter the 2016 presidential race? People who would like to see that happen think he will.

Two leading fundraisers for President Obama have pledged their support for Biden, who hasn't taken any formal steps toward running. Last week, top Obama bundler Jon Cooper signed on to be the national finance chair of the Draft Biden 2016 PAC, an organization encouraging the vice president to enter the race for the White House. Major Obama fundraiser Shiva Sarram also joined the finance team on Wednesday.

The Draft Biden PAC has over 100,000 signatures, teams in the early states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, as well as volunteers in every state. While the group won't release its fundraising numbers until the July 15 deadline, executive director William Pierce claims the cash influx exceeded all expectations.

Fusion Misattributes Racist Quote To Donald Trump

By Eddie Scary July 8, 2015, Washington Examiner

Fusion, the struggling millennial-centric news outlet, wrongly attributed a racist quote to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday.

An article that was featured on the very top of Fusion's home page described an application for a web browser that supposedly attached real past quotes from Trump to mentions of his name found online. "To be extra-clear: these are all real quotes that Donald Trump actually said..." read the article, written by Patrick Hogan.

One of those quotes said, "Laziness is a trait in blacks."

That line, however, is not directly from Trump. It is found in a 1991 tell-all by a former Trump employee, who alleges in his book that he heard Trump say those words to a black accountant at a Trump-owned establishment, according a 2011 article in the Huffington Post.

The Fusion article links to the Huffington Post piece, but does not say that the quote is second-hand from a former Trump employee, and not directly from Trump himself.

Hogan and a spokesman for Fusion did not return a request for comment.

Daily Beast: Hillary Plays The Victim In CNN Interview

By Lloyd Grove July 7, 2015, The Daily Beast

Any Clinton supporters who hoped that a New Hillary would emerge from Tuesday’s televised grilling of the Democratic presidential front-runner had to be brutally disillusioned.

The Hillary Clinton who showed up for her 19-minute back and forth with CNN political correspondent Brianna Keilar—touted as Clinton’s first one-on-one interview with a national reporter since she declared her candidacy three months ago—was the same Hillary Clinton the country has come to know over nearly a quarter-century on the American political scene.

Advertised by her associates as warm and funny in private, she came across as guarded, quibbling, and pokerfaced under the TV lights.

While her chief Democratic rival, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders—an unvarnished liberal who self-identifies as a Socialist—has been exciting huge crowds of thousands of voters in the nation’s first caucus and primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire, Clinton looked and sounded cagey and defensive, when her apparent goal is to inspire.

Hillary Clinton: 'People Should And Do Trust Me'

By Eric Bradner July 8, 2015, CNN

Iowa City, Iowa (CNN) In Hillary Clinton's first national interview of the 2016 race, she attacked her Republican rivals on immigration and dismissed the suggestion that the American people have a problem trusting her.

"People should and do trust me," she told CNN's Brianna Keilar.

She blamed the "barrage of attacks that are largely fomented by and coming from the right" for fueling a perception that trust is an area of vulnerability for her.

Clinton displayed little hesitation about attacking Republicans herself, saying that she is "very disappointed" in Donald Trump for his comments about immigrants and in the Republican Party for not condemning his remarks more quickly.

Companies, Countries Cutting Business Ties With Donald Trump

July 7, 2015, AP The Big Story

NEW YORK (AP) — Real estate mogul and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said in his campaign kickoff speech that some Mexican immigrants to the U.S. bring drugs and crime, and some are rapists. He has been widely criticized for his June 16 statement, but he has refused to apologize and instead repeated his views.

A host of organizations and countries are re-examining or severing their relationships with Trump and businesses connected to him, and their ranks are growing.

July 7

In the wake of Macy's decision to stop carrying Trump menswear, clothing company PVH Corp. says it's winding down its licensing deal with Trump, which was scheduled to run through 2018.

The PGA of America says it is moving its Grand Slam of Golf from Trump's Los Angeles course. The PGA of America says the move was made by mutual agreement with Trump.

Bernie-mania Running Wild As Hillary Clinton Sputters

By Chris Cassidy, Matt Stout July 7, 2015, Boston Herald

PORTLAND, Maine — Bernie-mania swept through here last night, as more than 7,500 screaming, sign-waving supporters packed a downtown arena — many lining up hours early — for surging Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The outpouring came as a Bay State Democratic congressman warned one-time sure-shot Hillary Clinton has an “excitement problem” in the Democratic race for the White House.

“In case you didn’t notice, this is a big turnout,” Sanders told the cheering crowd at Cross Insurance Arena. “From Maine to California — we have friends from Alaska and Hawaii as well — the American people understand that establishment politics and establishment economics is not working for America.”

The rally started 20 minutes late so the people stuck in line outside could filter in, and nearly every seat was filled. Some supporters waved homemade signs, including one that read “#Bern Baby Bern” and “Feel the Bern.”
