Daily Beast: Hillary Plays The Victim In CNN Interview

By Lloyd Grove July 7, 2015, The Daily Beast

Any Clinton supporters who hoped that a New Hillary would emerge from Tuesday’s televised grilling of the Democratic presidential front-runner had to be brutally disillusioned.

The Hillary Clinton who showed up for her 19-minute back and forth with CNN political correspondent Brianna Keilar—touted as Clinton’s first one-on-one interview with a national reporter since she declared her candidacy three months ago—was the same Hillary Clinton the country has come to know over nearly a quarter-century on the American political scene.

Advertised by her associates as warm and funny in private, she came across as guarded, quibbling, and pokerfaced under the TV lights.

While her chief Democratic rival, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders—an unvarnished liberal who self-identifies as a Socialist—has been exciting huge crowds of thousands of voters in the nation’s first caucus and primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire, Clinton looked and sounded cagey and defensive, when her apparent goal is to inspire.

Video: White Cop Grabs Black Tween by Her Neck-And Slams Her Against His Squad Car

Source:  Daily Beast
By Kate Briquelet, Jun. 16, 2015, The Daily Beast

The police say they were just doing their jobs—and besides, the 12-year-old attacked them. But a 911 call by a pool employee reveals concerns over race.

Krystal Dixon dropped off her kids and nieces and nephews at the Fairfield, Ohio, pool just as she’d done many times before. Not a half-hour later, the family was being rushed to the hospital after a violent altercation with local police.

The incident started so small. When one child didn’t have swimming trunks, staff demanded the family leave.

Even though Dixon, pregnant and 33, said she had a swimsuit for the child, workers at the Fairfield Aquatic Center—about 25 miles north of Cincinnati—said it was too late.

What was a minor breach of pool rules then descended into chaos: A white officer using pepper spray on black teenage girls, and one 12-year-old—Dixon’s niece—being slammed against a cop car. Her family says she has a fractured jaw and broken ribs.

Black Chicago Pastor: Dems ‘Failing’ Us

By Justin Glawe, Jun. 4, 2015, The Daily Beast

A pastor on the South Side is asking Republicans to talk to his flock after what he says are 50 years of disappointment from the other party.

CHICAGO — It is difficult to imagine a less likely GOP presidential campaign stop than O Block.

After all, it’s the most dangerous stretch of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Chicago and one of the toughest territories in the city.

But if Republicans stand a chance of chipping away at Democrats’ dominance over the black vote in this city and elsewhere, it might be something to consider.

“African Americans have been loyal to the Democratic Party,” Pastor Corey Brooks said. “But there is a group of African Americans that feel like the Democratic Party has not been loyal to us.”

Not far from O Block—named for a fallen gang member killed by a female assassin—is New Beginnings Church of Chicago, where Brooks sat in his office Wednesday morning laying out the case for Republican presidential candidates to visit the area.

Are You Ready for President Biden?

By Eleanor Clift, May 19, 2015, The Daily Beast

Inside the long-shot effort to get the vice president on the ballot and stop Hillary's coronation.

If these were ordinary times, a happy warrior like Joe Biden would be first out of the starting gate in the race for president. It would be so easy; politicking is what he loves to do.

But with Hillary Clinton so dominant in the polls, Biden is hanging back, watching and waiting to see if maybe there’s an opening. He’s telling supporters in the early states that he’ll decide in the next four weeks, or by the end of summer.

On that thin thread, Draft Biden 2016, a SuperPAC designed to draft him into the race, is lining up endorsements in Iowa, the first contest, and organizing house parties and meet-ups across the country, from Maryland to Alaska.

“Our goal is to have one party in each state, including Alaska,” says executive director Will Pierce.

Even Alaska?

“I just like to say that. I’ve been doing national campaigns for years, and I never heard anybody say that. Support for the vice president is strong, even in the last frontier!”

Pierce did advance work for Obama in ’08 and ’12, but he’s a novice at fundraising, the coin of the realm for ’16. He says Draft Biden has one or two major donors, and is on track to hit half a million by the end of the quarter when contributions are reported to the FEC.

Al Sharpton And Newt Gingrich Owe The IRS A Lot Of Money

Source:  Bloomberg.com / Alex Wong (Getty) / Zimbio
By Dave Levinthal / Center for Public Integrity, Jan 30, 2015, TheDailyBeast.com

Go ahead: Break election laws and violate tax rules, inviting federal fines you never pay.

You might just end up like civil-rights leader Al Sharpton, who now hosts MSNBC’s PoliticsNation, a nightly news show that serves as a de facto soapbox for his liberal political views.

On the program, Sharpton regularly defends the IRS, a division of the U.S. Treasury Department, against conservatives’ criticism that the agency gave special scrutiny to right-leaning nonprofit groups,

“There was no conspiracy for the IRS to target conservatives. So why are some Republicans so obsessed about all of them?” Sharpton shouted during a show last February.

What Sharpton doesn’t tell viewers is that his 2004 presidential committee owes the U.S. Treasury $19,500 a decade after being caught accepting illegal campaign contributions, according to federal records. It also owes the Federal Election Commission several thousand dollars in unpaid fines, even after paying off a separate $208,000 penalty in 2009 for several campaign violations.

Sharpton’s saga, while extreme, is hardly unique.

Freed Al Qaeda Agent Was Part Of Proposed Swap For Jailed Americans

Shane Harris and James Kirchick, Jan. 25, 2015, Daily Beast

The proposed swap involving the al Qaeda agent, Ali Saleh Al-Marri, raises troubling questions about whether the Bergdahl trade opened a kind of Pandora’s box, signaling to foreign governments that they can pressure the United States to make concessions on terrorism by trading American prisoners abroad for dangerous extremists held in the United States.

Is This The Beginning Of The End For Blacks And Dems?

Keli Goff, Nov. 3, 2014, The Daily Beast

Clearly there were black voters before Barack Obama, but to put in context the difference between black voter turnout in the Obama era and black voter turnout before, consider this. In 2008 two million more black voters showed up at the polls than had four years before. Among young black voters ages 18 to 24, there was an 8 percent increase in turnout from 2004 to 2008, the highest increase among any demographic, across racial, gender and generational lines.

In a phone interview, Andra Gillespie, a Political Scientist based at Emory University said, “People historically thought black voters participated in the political process and voted because they had confidence in their own ability to effect change in the political system, irrespective of whether they believed politicians cared about what they thought. But there was some work that came out about 25 years ago that suggests that’s not true and that in fact that blacks feel empowered when they see blacks in positions of power.” Gillespie explained that this research did find a connection between the number of likely black voters and black elected leaders.

By Larry Elder, Apr. 22, 2014

Yesterday, I posted an article I wrote nearly 15 years ago about the fraud of a movie, "Hurricane." The man on whose life the movie was based died this past Sunday.

Today I am showing a video prepared by Hollywood publicist Ed Lozzi:

As you see, the video intervews New Jersey columnist Cal Deal, who followed the case from the beginning. Deal believes Carter murdered three people -- and pulled off a massive con job on Hollywood.

Deal put together a web site called graphicwitness.com/carter. He says he did so to allow the truth to be known.

He says that “Hurricane,” while an excellent movie, is almost complete fiction from start to finish. Among other things, Carter was never “exonerated.” Physical evidence linked the middleweight fighter to the crime. He was not the choirboy the film made him out to be.

In some cases, the movie flat-out lied. In particular, one character bemoans that Carter was convicted by "all-white juries" when two blacks sat on the second jury.

Carter, in fact, murdered three people and lied convincingly enough to bamboozle Hollywood into giving him a standing ovation at the Golden Globe Awards.

Don't believe me, a self-loathing “right-winger”? Okay, try dismissing this piece by Michael Moynihan in the decidedly non-"right wing" Daily Beast:

‘Hurricane’ Carter Was Wrongly Convicted, But He Wasn’t Innocent

Any questions?

Rubin "Hurricane" Carter
By Michael Moynihan, Apr. 21, 2014, Thedailybeast.com

“This man right here is love. He’s all love,” announced Denzel Washington while swaddling his Best Actor gong at the Golden Globes in 2000. The man of love, former boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who died yesterday at 76, rubbed his hands nervously, managing a meek smile as Washington spoke while patting him on the back.

How could one dispute Denzel’s characterization? This paragon of love, who once beat people up for a living, had long since transformed a life of violence, including a 19-year spell in prison, into a crusade for justice, prompting Washington’s award-winning Hollywood hagiography of a man falsely accused and falsely convicted by a corrupt and racist system. But Carter’s past wasn’t simply a story of love triumphing over hate; there were messy details his supporters, screenwriters, and obituarists elided.

In 1964, a Saturday Evening Post profile of the up-and-coming fighter reported that “society had [already] confined [Carter] for a total of 10 years for crimes of violence.” The Newark Star-Ledger, his hometown newspaper, later explained that “he was sent to…reformatory for breaking a bottle over the head of a man from whom he stole a wristwatch and $55.” He confessed to the Post in 1964 that “my partner and me…used to get up and put our guns in our pockets like you put your wallet in your pocket. Then we go out in the streets and start fighting—anybody, everybody. We used to shoot at folks.” He bragged in the same interview that he had once knocked out an uncooperative horse with a single punch. (Bob Dylan sang that Carter wanted nothing more than to go “where the trout streams flow and the air is nice, and ride a horse along a trail,” while failing to mention his penchant for equine assault).

But it was in 1966 when Carter, along with an accomplice, was accused—and later convicted by a jury—of a gruesome triple murder in Paterson, N.J. After a campaign to establish his innocence was promoted by supporters like Muhammad Ali, Carter was paroled in 1976 and granted a new trial, a brief spell of freedom during which he knocked out a 112-pound woman running his “free Rubin” support committee. As she told the Newark Star-Ledger in 2000, “I didn’t see it coming. I felt everything getting dark. I remember praying to Allah, ‘Please help me,’ and apparently Allah rolled me over, and he kicked me in the back instead of kicking my guts out. Allah saved my life.”

The second jury upheld his conviction.

So the “Hurricane” was not always a dealer of love. It was something he managed only after his release from prison, to which he was confined, according to Dylan, “for something he never done.” It was that song from 1975, a brilliant, 8-plus minute attack on Carter’s persecutors and police prosecutors, that helped push the case from the ghetto of radical media into the public consciousness. Almost all of the detail was wrong, but it’s still the only detail anyone remembers.

When Carter’s death was confirmed on Sunday by John Artis, the man tried and convicted as his accomplice in the Paterson shootings, the internet offered encomiums, fulsome Twitter RIPs, and broad condemnations of the criminal justice system (the last one richly deserved). My phone buzzed with pushed updates from the Wall Street Journal, BBC News, and New York Timesannouncing his passing. Mike Tyson, another boxer who spent time behind bars (exiting humbled and chastened, with an image of genocidal maniac Mao Tse-Tung tattooed on his stomach), tweeted “we a lost a great man today, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, the boxer who was wrongfully accused and became a symbol for racial injustice. RIP.”

Famous as the 'Money Honey,' Maria Bartiromo is about to begin a Sunday morning show on the Fox News Channel-but not before firing a ringing broadside at her former CNBC bosses.

The “Money Honey” may have moved across the street--from CNBC to Fox--but she’s still the same hyper-competitive, no-nonsense, Brooklyn-born business enthusiast that viewers have come to know as Maria Bartiromo.

“I’m not changing,” the 46-year-old financial news luminary told me on Thursday as she rode back from a sit-down with Ken Frazier, the chairman and CEO of the Merck pharmaceutical empire in the wilds of northern New Jersey. “I’ve always been competitive when it comes to interviews, and I intend to remain the same person.”

Source: Pew Research Report
By Sarah Jean Seman
While Republicans are not particularly adept at attracting Millennials, it seems Democrats are not particularly adept at keeping them: only 17 percent identity as Republican while 27 percent identify as Democrat, a Pew Research report found. However, this tech-savvy, debt-burdened, areligious, racially diverse group of 18 to 33-year-olds are on the fast track away from the Democratic party.
As noted by the The Daily Beast:
While the Pew study lends much support to the story that the GOP is struggling with Millennials, far more interesting is the new revelation at just how much the Democrats have struggled with this generation in the last year or two. While Democrats have the edge over the GOP in terms of the number of Millennials identifying with their party, it is actually the Democrats who have seen a larger drop-off among the young in just the last few years. Obama's approval ratings, which at one point were sky-high with Millennials, have come back down to earth since the start of his second term. A majority of Millennials think the government should ensure everyone is covered by health insurance but 54 percent also disapprove of the Affordable Care Act, a result that is exactly in line with other generations’ views.
