Tiger Woods Shoots An 82, His Worst Round Ever

Source:  www.FoxSports.com
By Nick Piecoro, Jan. 31, 2015, AZCentral.com

Tiger Woods began his second round at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in abysmal fashion on Friday morning, shooting an 8-over-par 44 on his first nine at TPC Scottsdale.

It didn't get a whole lot better.

On his back nine, holes 1-9, Woods posted a 38. On his final hole, he faced a 10-foot par putt, which would've given him an 81. He missed it left.

That bogey put the finish on an 82 for Woods, the worst round of his professional career.

Over his last nine holes, he also carded a double bogey on the 4 and had bogeys on 6 and 7.

His front-nine performance tied the worst nine-hole score of his career – he also shot a 44 at the 2013 Memorial Tournament.

Economy Grew 2.6% In The Fourth Quarter

By Paul Davidson, Jan. 30, 2015, USAToday.com

The economy grew more slowly than expected in the fourth quarter as government spending fell sharply and business investment pulled back.

Gross domestic product expanded at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.6% in the three months ended Dec. 31, slowing sharply from a robust 5% pace in the third quarter, the Commerce Department said Friday. Economists expected 3.1% growth.

For all of 2014, the economy grew 2.4%, up from 2.2% in 2013, after harsh winter weather early in the year caused the economy to shrink in the first quarter.

In the fourth quarter, consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the economy, grew a healthy 4.3% as plunging gasoline prices and strong job growth bolstered Americans' confidence.

But government spending declined 7.5% as defense outlays tumbled after rising sharply in the third quarter.

Business investment increased just 1.9% as companies girded for a strengthening dollar and sluggish overseas growth that's expected to dampen exports, and energy companies grappled with plummeting oil prices.

Exports slowed as well, rising 2.8%, while imports increased sharply as the stronger dollar made foreign products less expensive for U.S. consumers. The widening trade gap subtracted from economic growth.

AP Double Standard: Atlanta Chief's Firing Over Religious Views Is National News, But His Lawsuit Challenge Isn't

Former Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran
By Tom Blumer, Jan. 30, 2015, Newsbusters.com

Former Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran, who alleges he was fired from his position solely because of his Christian beliefs, has filed a religious discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

That's not news at the Associated Press's national site, and it appears that the AP has not even carried a local story about Cochran's EEOC complaint — omissions that reek of a double standard.

The wire service carried a national "Big Story" item in November about how Cochran was "in trouble" over a "homosexuality book" (AP's term). Actually, instead of being entirely about homosexuality, as anyone reading the AP headline would think is the case, Cochran's book merely has "a chapter on human sexuality that’s consistent with the Bible’s teaching on the subject."

AP also carried a January 13 "Big Story" about Cochran's firing dominated by the city's side of the story with yet another deceptive headline: "Mayor: Fire chief not axed for writing anti-gay book."

But all forms of pushback from Cochran, including dramatic stories of support from fellow Christians, and now the former fire chief's EEOC action? Crickets.

Tony Perkins at the Family Research Council wrote about Cochran's situation on January 14 (italics and links are in original; bolds are mine throughout this post):

Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran spent his life answering the call, and yesterday, hundreds of Georgians returned the favor. The city’s 34-year squad veteran was inspired by the show of support at the Atlanta Capitol yesterday, where people from all backgrounds, ethnicities, and political parties stood alongside Cochran in protest of his outrageous firing. Like the sportscasters, educators, athletes, small businesses, wedding vendors, firefighters, and others who dare to think outside the far-Left box, Cochran was a victim of the same intolerance his Mayor claims to oppose.

The former Obama appointee, who had a long and distinguished record, finally had the opportunity to tell his side of the story at Tuesday’s rally. And, like so many before him, nothing but fierce hostility toward Christianity was at its heart. To a room full of reporters, Cochran made it clear: “I was fired for having the audacity to believe that sex was created for procreation and should be in the bonds of holy matrimony between and a man and woman.”

FLASHBACK:  NFL's Goodell Seeks To Look Past 'Tough Year,' To Future

Source: www.NyDailyNews.com
By Mike Florio, Feb. 14, 2014, ProFootballTalk.com

Commissioner Roger Goodell made $44.2 million last year. But he didn’t actually make$44.2 million.

In actuality, he earned $35.1 million in salary, bonus, and pension compensation for the one-year period (ending March 31, 2013) covered by the Form 1099, filed by all tax-exempt organizations. The compensation also includes a $5 million incentive payment and a $4.1 million pension payment from the year of the work stoppage, which was paid in 2012.

In other words, Goodell’s compensation of nearly $30 million in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012 was $9.1 million too light. It should have been nearly $39 million that year, with only $35.1 million earned the following 12 months.

Which means he actually made roughly $4 million less from one year to the next.

Apart from the explanation, which once the numbers get above $10 million don’t really matter to 99.99999 percent of us, the league has defended Goodell’s high wages via a stream of quotes from owners serving on the Compensation Committee.

Hagel: Ground Troops May Be Needed In Iraq

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel
By Mandy Oaklander, Jan. 31, 2015, Time.com

Departing defense secretary Chuck Hagel said it’s possible the United States may need to send non-combat ground troops to Iraq to help deter the Islamic State.

Hagel, who resigned as Pentagon chief on Nov. 24, told CNN in an interview Friday that he thinks the deployment of American troops for intelligence-gathering and locating targets is a possibility, reportsReuters.

He said he wasn’t sure, however, that it would come to that. “I would say we’re not there yet,” he said. “Whether we get there or not, I don’t know.”

FBI Confirms That While Gun Sales Are Up, Violent Crime Is Down

Credit: Gabriel Bouys / AFP / Getty
By Bob Owens, Jan. 26, 2015, Bearingarms.com

Various anti-gun groups claiming that the increased acceptance of firearms in American society is lead to more violent crime and gun accidents.

Unfortunately for the deceivers, we know that gun accidents have been steadily declining for decades for both children and adults, and are now at all-time historical lows, even as firearms ownership in the United States is at an all-time high both in terms of raw numbers (more than 300 million firearms) and in terms of the percentage of the population believed to be armed (more than 100 million), and the number of permitted concealed carriers (more than 11 million).

Both the number of gun owners and the number of total firearms in the United States every day is theoretically meeting new all-time highs each and every day.

The gun control groups and the media outlets attempting to carry their proverbial water have been reduced to claiming that the social acceptance of “Gun Culture 2.0″ is somehow leading to more violent crime.

Perhaps they should have spoken with the FBI before crafting that lie.

Figures released today in the FBI’s Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report reveal overall declines in the number of violent crimes and property crimes reported to law enforcement during the first six months of 2014 when compared to figures from the first six months of 2013.

For GOP Candidates, A Tricky Balance On Immigration

RNC Committee Chair Reince Pribus, 1.16.2014
Credit:  Reuters / Mike Blake
By James Pindell, Jan. 30, 2015, Bostonglobe.com

DES MOINES — For decades, before Republicans could begin exploring a run for president, they needed to figure out exactly what position they would take on federal subsidies to promote the use of corn-based ethanol in gasoline.

In the two states that kick off the presidential primary season there were differing views.

In Iowa, ethanol was the last best hope to help the family farmer, create jobs, and preserve the state’s rural heritage. In New Hampshire, the idea of federal subsidies smacked against the state’s frugal nature, especially when nearly no one in the state stood to gain financially.

But these days, a new issue has emerged that might even be thornier for candidates to balance than ethanol: immigration reform.

At the Iowa Freedom Summit last weekend, immigration played a prominent role in the speeches of all eight potential presidential candidates. To be sure, some of that was because the summit’s host, Representative Steve King, is outspoken on the issue. King once suggested those in the country illegally spend so much time drug running across the border they have “calves the size of cantaloupes.” After noticing that undocumented immigrants sat next to first lady Michelle Obama during the State of the Union address this month, he asked whether they were “deportable.”

Al Sharpton And Newt Gingrich Owe The IRS A Lot Of Money

Source:  Bloomberg.com / Alex Wong (Getty) / Zimbio
By Dave Levinthal / Center for Public Integrity, Jan 30, 2015, TheDailyBeast.com

Go ahead: Break election laws and violate tax rules, inviting federal fines you never pay.

You might just end up like civil-rights leader Al Sharpton, who now hosts MSNBC’s PoliticsNation, a nightly news show that serves as a de facto soapbox for his liberal political views.

On the program, Sharpton regularly defends the IRS, a division of the U.S. Treasury Department, against conservatives’ criticism that the agency gave special scrutiny to right-leaning nonprofit groups,

“There was no conspiracy for the IRS to target conservatives. So why are some Republicans so obsessed about all of them?” Sharpton shouted during a show last February.

What Sharpton doesn’t tell viewers is that his 2004 presidential committee owes the U.S. Treasury $19,500 a decade after being caught accepting illegal campaign contributions, according to federal records. It also owes the Federal Election Commission several thousand dollars in unpaid fines, even after paying off a separate $208,000 penalty in 2009 for several campaign violations.

Sharpton’s saga, while extreme, is hardly unique.

Republicans Push Through Keystone Bill To Set Up Showdown With Obama

Source:  www.sbecouncil.org
By Susanne Goldenberg, Jan. 29, 2015, TheGuardian.com

Fresh from their first big legislative win in the new Congress, Republicans on Thursday called on Barack Obama to back down on his veto threat and sign into law a bill approving construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

As the Keystone bill glided to a 62-36 passage in the Senate, with nine Democrats voting in favour, Republicans stepped up their challenge to Obama’s authority and urged him to sign off on the pipeline project.

“The US Senate and House have now passed legislation approving the Keystone XL project, and the American people have repeatedly expressed their support for it,” John Hoeven, the North Dakota Republican who introduced the Keystone bill, said.

“I encourage the president to sign this legislation and work with us not only to build this vital infrastructure project, but also to help us develop a comprehensive, all-of-the-above, energy plan for our nation.”

With Thursday’s vote, the Republicans have made good on their promise to make Keystone the first order of business of the new Congress – although it is highly unlikely to ever become law.

Why Is Hillary Clinton Delaying Her Campaign Kickoff?

Husna Haq, Jan 29, 2015, Csmonitor.com

Bad news for those eager to see Hillary Clinton kick off her presidential campaign: Insiders on Team Clinton say that the former Secretary of State will likely delay her campaign launch by at least three months, and that has some wondering if Hillary is in trouble.

Until now, most expected the Clinton campaign to officially kickoff in April, the beginning of a new fundraising quarter, but her campaign team recently told Politico that it will put off campaign launch until summer.

"Hillary Clinton, expecting no major challenge for the Democratic nomination, is strongly considering delaying the formal launch of her presidential campaign until July, three months later than originally planned, top Democrats tell Politico," the site reported Thursday.
Recommended: How much do you know about Hillary Rodham Clinton? Take our quiz.

Of course, the news was greeted with some trepidation (or glee) on both sides of the political spectrum.

A Personal Note To My Radio Family

Michael Medved
By Michael Medved, Jan. 30, 2015, MyNorthWest.com

All those who listen regularly to my radio show know how much I value the privilege of speaking to this eager, enlightened audience every weekday, year-round. I have been unapologetically fanatical about broadcasting whenever, however I can; in eighteen years of national syndication, I've never missed more than four days in a row of regularly scheduled broadcasts.

I always knew that it would take something serious to keep me away from the microphone I cherish for an extended period of time. As it turns out, I am facing something serious. It's called cancer.

To be more precise, I was diagnosed in the middle of December with stage three throat cancer. I began medical treatment immediately at one of the finest cancer centers in the country and my prognosis for full recovery is very good; in the great majority of cases, this is a highly curable form of cancer. In fact, given my fierce desire to keep doing the show I managed to broadcast every day while completing more than half of my daily radiation and weekly chemotherapy treatments. I would go to the hospital first thing in the morning then make my way down to our Seattle studios to do the live show. The doctors warned me that this would become increasingly difficult. At this point, my confidence and good spirits would lead me to go on but my voice - the most essential tool in radio - won't cooperate. So beginning today - Friday, January 30th - I'm taking a medical leave of absence until my recovery is more advanced.

George Lucas Rips Hollywood, ‘Stupid’ Cat Videos at Sundance

Source:  www.screenrant.com
By Brent Lang, Jan. 29, 2015, Variety.com

George Lucas offered a bleak assessment of the current state of the film business during a panel discussion with Robert Redford at the Sundance Film Festival on Thursday, saying that the movies are “more and more circus without any substance behind it.”

However, the “Star Wars” director hit back at critics who said his role in kicking off the blockbuster film business has watered down cinematic storytelling.

“If you go into ‘Star Wars’ and see what’s going on there, there’s a lot more substance than circus,” he argued.

In its day, “Star Wars” represented a major breakthrough in technology, and it’s easy to discern a throughline from the galaxy far, far away to the comic book movies and special-effects driven productions that dominate today’s movie screens. The tools he helped popularize were all in the service of plot, he argued.

Adult ISIS Fighter in Child Executioner Video Killed, Official Says

Credit and Source:  ABC News
By James Gordon Meek and Lee Ferran, Jan. 28, 2015

A notorious ISIS fighter featured in the shocking video this month of a boy appearing to execute two prisoners with a handgun has been killed in battle, a counter-terrorism official said today.

Abu Saad al-Dagestani was the nom de guerre of an ISIS terrorist shown in the gruesome Jan. 13 tape overseeing what ISIS claimed was the execution of two alleged "Russian spies" by a boy under 11. Al-Dagestani was first reported killed in jihadi tweets on Jan. 15, which claimed he was "martyred" near the embattled Kurdish town of Kobani on Syria's border with Turkey.

"We do think he was killed," a counter-terrorism official familiar with military operations around Kobani by the U.S.-led coalition told ABC News today.

ISIS Video Claims to Show Child Executioner

The video, apparently produced by an ISIS media outlet and shared on Twitter, was seven minutes long and featured “confessions” by the two men. In a heavily-edited section, the boy, called a “lion’s cub,” was shown firing a pistol at the heads of the men, who each fall, apparently lifeless.

Sisi Revisits ‘Egypt’s Identity Crisis’

By Raymond Ibrahim, Jan 27, 2015, Frontpagemag.com

Of all the recent calls for reform made by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, perhaps most adamant has been his insistence that all Egyptians—Muslims and Christians—see themselves first and foremost as Egyptians.

This came out very clearly when he visited the St. Mark Coptic Cathedral during Christmas Eve mass. Then, he passionately (see video) declared:

Listen, it is very important that the world should see us… that the world should see us, Egyptians… and you’ll note that I never use a word other than “Egyptians”…. It’s not right to call each other by any other name…. We are Egyptians. Let no one ask “what kind of Egyptian are you?” [Copt or Muslim]… As I said, Egypt has brought a humanistic and civilizing message to the world for millennia and we’re here today to confirm that we are capable of doing so again… This is why we mustn’t call ourselves anything other than “Egyptians.” This is what we must be — Egyptians, just Egyptians, Egyptians indeed!

Maurice Clarett
Source:  www.cleveland.com
Credit:  AP File
By Larry Elder , Jan, 29, 2015

"What do you think you missed not having a dad around?"

Marshawn Lynch, the grumpy, often-fined National Football League star for the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, was asked that question. Lynch, raised on the mean streets of Oakland, California, by a single mother, said: "Nothing. My mama played both parts."

When asked, however, why he finds it difficult to "trust" people, Lynch tells a story about his father: "I think it started earlier, when Mom would (take me over to my dad's) house. And when I get there, my dad like, 'Oh, OK, I be right back,' and then you don't see this guy for like, two days or something. And then after a while you, like, sh--, you build up numb feelings to that. So you start to expect the worst out of people."

Didn't he just tell us that he missed "nothing"?

Maurice Clarett, another inner-city football player who starred at Ohio State, was featured in an ESPN documentary film. Like Lynch, Clarett was raised without a father. "My father," explained Clarett, "wasn't part of my childhood. And when you come from a broken family you carry those problems; you carry that baggage wherever you go."

Clarett's mom added: "I provided all I could provide for him as a mother. There's just things a child pulls from a man. (Ohio State) coach (Jim) Tressel did represent a father figure to Maurice. They had conversations that a father and son should have. ... Tressel tried to provide some of the values that fathers instill. But Tressel can never be his father."

In Clarett's freshman year under coach Tressel, he played a key role in the Buckeye's winning the 2002 BCS National Championship. But Clarett's college career ended just months later, over accusations of academic misconduct and of filing a false police report. This resulted in an NCAA investigation and Clarett's suspension from Ohio State.

Alcohol- and drug-fueled days followed his Ohio State departure, and after three years, Clarett was arrested for armed robbery. His then-pregnant girlfriend feared that Clarett's unborn daughter would "grow up just like I did -- with a father in prison."

Before his armed robbery trial began, Clarett was again arrested and ultimately convicted for illegal possession of loaded firearms and resisting arrest. Sentenced to seven-and-a-half years, he served three years and 11 months.

But instead of emerging from prison angry, Clarett says he "educated himself." His first lesson? Accepting responsibility for the choices he made that landed him in prison.

Some of his prison reflections:

"One thing that I've come to realize is I am my only enemy. I am the sole ruler of this journey."

"I hate to see my family suffer over my nonsense. They don't deserve it. My actions incarcerated them also."

"Quit searching for love, peace, and happiness outside of yourself. I once did that. It doesn't work."

"When I lockdown tonight I will begin to separate my emotions from my logic. That will bring clarity and sound judgment."

"When you're connected to positive people, when you're connected to people who uplift you, people who motivate you -- that's how I come out of it. Show me your friends, I'll show you your future."

After his release from prison, Clarett's father died. He thought he was not going to have feelings. But he did. His father's death hurt him deeply, largely because, according to Clarett, he had a chance "to make it right with the man" -- but chose not to do it.

Marshawn Lynch and Maurice Clarett are football "success" stories, backed by loving, self-sacrificing mothers. But for every talented inner-city athlete who "made it," there are many more with as much or more talent, with involved mothers, too -- who never do. It takes more than talent -- it takes guidance to instill the necessary discipline to apply those skills.

President Barack Obama says: "We know the statistics -- that children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of school and 20 times more likely to end up in prison."

My own father did not know his father. Raised in the Jim Crow South during the Great Depression, my father, like Maurice Clarett, vowed to be a better father than his non-existent one. In my latest book, "Dear Father Dear Son," I write about his tough life. After Pearl Harbor, he joined the Marines, where he became a staff sergeant in charge of food services. But after the war, when he returned to the South, he could not get work as a cook because restaurants told him, "We don't hire n--gers."

After working for years as a janitor, my dad opened up a restaurant, which he ran until his 80s. In "Dear Father," I write about my father and our 10-year estrangement when we didn't talk to each other. When at last we sat down for a lengthy -- and long-overdue -- conversation, I asked him about his father. And for the first time in my life, I saw my father cry.

Tough guys need dads, too.

Raul Castro: US Must Return Guantánamo For Normal Relations

Raul Castro
Source:  www.biography.com
By Javier Cordoba, and Michael Weissenstein, Jan. 28, 2015, Associated Press

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA - Cuban President Raul Castro demanded on Wednesday that the United States return the U.S. base at Guantánamo Bay, lift the half-century trade embargo on Cuba and compensate his country for damages before the two nations re-establish normal relations.

Castro told a summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States that Cuba and the United States are working toward full diplomatic relations but “if these problems aren’t resolved, this diplomatic rapprochement wouldn’t make any sense.”

Castro and President Barack Obama announced on Dec. 17 that they would move toward renewing full diplomatic relations by reopening embassies in each other’s countries. The two governments held negotiations in Havana last week to discuss both the reopening of embassies and the broader agenda of re-establishing normal relations.

Obama has loosened the trade embargo with a range of measures designed to increase economic ties with Cuba and increase the number of Cubans who don’t depend on the communist state for their livelihoods.

Apple Records The Largest Profit In The History Of ANY Public Company

By Christina Farr, Jan 28, 2015, Yahoo.com

(Reuters) - Apple Inc quarterly results smashed Wall Street expectations with record sales of big-screen iPhones in the holiday shopping season and a 70 percent rise in China sales, powering the company to the largest profit in corporate history.

The company sold 74.5 million iPhones in its fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 27, while many analysts had expected fewer than 70 million. Revenue rose to $74.6 billion from $57.6 billion a year earlier.

Profit of $18 billion was the biggest ever reported by a public company, worldwide, according to S&P analyst Howard Silverblatt. Apple's cash pile is now $178 billion, enough to buy IBM or the equivalent to $556 for every American.

Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said the Cupertino, California-based company would release its next product, the Apple Watch, in April.

Shares rose about 5 percent to $114.90 in after-hours trade.

After Zuckerberg Said ‘Je Suis Charlie,’ Facebook Censors Muhammad Images

By Warren Todd Hudson, Jan. 28, 2015

Only two weeks after Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg made a show of support for freedom of speech following a terror attack by radical Muslims in France, Facebook began censoring images of Muhammad in Turkey–including the very Charlie Hebdo images Zuckerberg claimed to support.

On January 9, Zuckerberg posted a message under his own name, taking credit for standing up to demands that Facebook censor images of Muhammad.

“Facebook has always been a place where people across the world share their views and ideas,” Zuckerberg wrote. “We follow the laws in each country, but we never let one country or group of people dictate what people can share across the world.”

He ended his post with “#JeSuisCharlie,” a show of support for the murdered members of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo who lost their lives in an attack by radical Islamists on January 7.

A week later, Zuckerberg was still defending his condemnation of the attack on the French tabloid and pledged that he and Facebook would continue to offer “a service where you can speak freely without fear of violence.”

The Space Shuttle Challenger Exploded 29 Years Ago--Ronald Reagan's Speech That Night

By Chris Cillizza, Jan. 28, 2015

It was 29 years ago today that the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded. Twenty-nine years. I still remember it vividly. As a third-grader at Elmer Thienes Elementary School, we were all gathered around TVs to watch the launch because Christa McAuliffe, a teacher, was set to be the first civilian in space. The shock of the explosion is something that has stayed with me over the intervening three decades; it was the seminal moment of my -- and, I suspect, many peoples' -- childhood.
